- HIGH-SPEED BAIT FINESSE SYSTEM SPOOL – The new KastKing Zephyr Baitcasting fishing reel is designed from the ground up for anglers looking to add a true, BFS casting reel to their arsenal of fishing tackle. The ultra-light weight (9 gram) BFS spool is designed to perform better than typical casting reels with very light fishing line and extremely light baits. It’s machined from solid aluminum and spins freely on Double Shielded SS ball bearings at very high speeds with minimal effort.
- PALM PERFECT FRAME DESIGN – The Zephyr Bait Finesse casting reel features a small, palm-sized frame that is perfect for finesse style fishing applications. The entire frame and side covers are made of extremely light weight carbon fiber and the entire reel weighs only 160 grams/5.6 ounces. The combination of light weight, small palmable size and extreme strength, make this the perfect baitcaster for bait finesse applications.
- OUTSTANDING COMPONENTS – Zephyr BFS spool braking is provided by eight magnets that have ten levels of adjustment for a wide range of bait sizes and fishing conditions. There are six high speed, double shielded stainless-steel ball bearings that provide exceptional smoothness and high line speeds, plus the infinite anti-reverse bearing for solid hook sets. The hardened aluminum alloy drive gear reduces overall weight and the high strength brass pinion gear provides durable performance.
- PROFESSIONAL PERFORMANCE FEATURES – The Zephyr Casting Reel has a high speed 7.2:1 gear ratio that picks up 29.8” of line with each turn of the handle. The smooth, yet powerful drag system is made with 4 carbon fiber drag washers and will provide 10 lbs/4.5kg of reliable drag. The shallow, Bait Finesse aluminum spool is designed for lower capacity of light weight BFS lines to provide easy casting of exceptionally light baits. Capacity Mono (Lbs/Yds):4lbs/75 yds, 6lbs/65yds, 8lbs/50yds.
- ATTENTION TO DETAIL – The new KastKing Zephyr Bait Finesse Casting reel might just be the perfect reel for your finesse fishing applications. Low profile comfort, high-speed spool, aluminum handle fitted with comfortable EVA knobs, precision audible click adjustable tension knob and many more performance features make this the professional’s choice for Bait Finesse System fishing applications.
Product Description
The New KastKing Zephyr Bait Finesse System BFS Baitcasting fishing reel is the angler’s choice for making accurate, short range casts using light line and extremely light baits. It all starts with the super shallow, CNC aluminum spool that is supported by an aluminum shaft and high-speed double shielded ball bearings. This spool is designed for light weight lines from 4-8 lbs and extremely light baits down to 1.5 grams.
The palm perfect frame and side covers are made of 100% carbon material keeping weight to an absolute minimum. The entire reel weights only 5.64 ounces/160 grams yet is rigid and strong for superior performance and control.
The high-speed gear ratio of 7.2:1 picks up 29.8” of line with each turn of the handle. Smoothness is assured because of the machined aluminum main gear and machined brass pinion gear. Even the worm drive shaft is machined of nickel-plated brass for a long life and smooth performance.
A smooth, consistent drag is critically important for the Bait Finesse System because of the light BFS fishing lines being used. The Zephyr features a 4-disc carbon fiber drag that has no hesitation on startup, protecting those light lines.
The braking system is designed to control the high speed associated with this system and utilizes 8 magnetic buttons that have 6 different adjustment levels to control over runs when using a variety of small, finesse baits in a wide variety of fishing conditions.
A key to designing a true Bait Finesse System casting reel is the spool. You must have an exceptionally light weight, shallow spool that will hold a limited amount of light diameter line and deliver high line speeds with little efforts. Short, accurate casts are achieved with minimal effort with our CNC machined BFS aluminum spool that weighs only 9 grams and can accurately deliver baits down to 1.5 grams. Line capacity of the Zephyr casting reel is - Mono (Lbs/Yds): 4lbs/75 yds, 6lbs/65yds, 8lbs/50yds.

Questions about KastKing Zephyr BFS Baitcasting Reel – Carbon Fiber BFS Fishing Reel – 5.6 OZ – Double Shielded 6+1 BB – 7.2:1 Gear Ratio Fishing Reels,Lightweight Bait Finesse System Freshwater Saltwater Casting Reel
Q:
When will this be available again?
Answer: The reel?
Q:
Saltwater ok?
Answer: Oh yes , I love it . I live on the golf , and great for saltwater fishing .
Answer: Only used it in freshwater
Answer: As far as I know, the answer would be a NO
Q:
What rod would you recommend with this reel?
Answer: I paired the Kast King Zephyr BFS reel with the 6’ KastKing Zephyr ultralight casting rod. Perfect match and it looks great.
Answer: In the US market, a Shimano Sensilite.
Answer: Any Kast King 7 foot plus medium heavy rod
Answer: I personally use mine on a Med to Med/Heavy rod.
Q:
How do you register this reel for the free line?
Answer: There is a coupon that you fill out the transaction ID number
Q:
Anyone know how far this will cast a 2 grams jig with UL braid? Thanks.
Answer: I was able to throw a 2.5 gram bare jighead roughly 90’ in my backyard with this reel. I had 6# test monofilament line. I had the reel mounted on a 6’ ML Fast Action casting rod.
Answer: First thing is to make sure you don't overfill the spool. I didn't and it will not cast without backlashing. Once removed the extra it cast perfectly. I have not tried braid yet, I'm use 6lb flouro. I'm getting about 20 feet or so with something that light. I'm still getting use to so. I think i might try braid with a flouro leader. Having the heavier leader might help with distance. Hope this helped.
Answer: I can get 25-30' with NO wind. I am using #4 florocoat line
Q:
What are the rough dimensions of the reel itself?
Answer: It's a full size reel. Not a compact like others BFS reels.
Q:
Can you order a standard spool for this reel for other applications?
Answer: No you cannot; if you want a reel with a standard spool try the KastKing MegaBite Reels; they are awesome.
Answer: Are you cannot order an extra spool at one size
Answer: Yes
Q:
Is this good for casting crappie jigs around 1/16 ounces?
Answer: If you want to through 16 oz get a spinning rod.
Answer: Yes of course
Q:
can you drop shot drop shot with it?
Answer: I fish local tournaments in SoCal. I have two Zephyrs on med light rods. The absolute best drop shot combo I've ever used. Six lb. line, 1/4 to 3/8 oz. sinkers
Answer: You could but I think drop shot is much better suited for a spinning reel.
Answer: This depends on your experience with bait casters. I would say novice to medium experience users would struggle.
Answer: Definitely! Great little reel. Cast spinning gear on a bait aster and lose the line twist
Answer: You could but I myself wouldn't
Q:
What is a good rod to pair this reel with? new to the bfs scene, so rod and line recommendations are welcome.
Answer: I spooled my reel with 20lb test braided line attached to a medium action 6 1/2 ft bait casting rod. It's a good all around combo for many bass fishing techniques (i.e. crankbaits, worms, top water etc.). Length is a personal choice. It all depends on how & what u fish for.
Answer: It really depends on what you will be using this reel for. I use my BFS Reels for throwing Ned Rigs, so I have all of my reels mounted to Bass Pro Shops Microlite Graphite 6' ML Fast Action Rods. They are perfect for throwing 1/32 through 3/32 Ned Jigheads rigged with a bait. And they can throw them far without any issues or bird's nests. I have 6lb DuPont Stren Mono on all of my BFS combos.
Answer: I bought this for skipping small weight jigs and plastics under docks, so I paired mine with a 6 foot, medium action with a fast tip, a short rod to enhance accuracy, (the longer the rod, the less accuracy but the farther you can throw a light weight bait). Using 20 Lb braid, which has diameter of about 8 lb mono or flouro. BFS is new to me also, but so far, with only a small amount of line, I am pleased with performance (few backlashes and not bad to untangle even though skipping is main use). USE YOUR THUMB!
Answer: medium 6'8 ,7' foot rod and 10 to 15 lb line
Answer: I use an Shimano Sensilite #senc70l and 6# Tatsu fluorocarbon line.
Q:
Can this be used to cast light weight lures? Rooster tails
Answer: Yes, if you know what you’re doing and you have the proper rod, you can cast 1/8 ounce lures and possibly even 1/16 ounce lures.
Answer: The Kastking Zephyr is a BFS reel. BFS stands for “baitcasting finesse system.” It’s purpose is to cast lightweight lures in place of ultra light spinning gear. Match it with a comparable UL rod and you’re in business. This is a great deal for a great reel!
Answer: Not very well. There’s reels that handle lighter lures far batter than this. 1/4 oz maybe 3/16 and up you would be ok. But I have other revolving spool reels that I cast 1/32 and again 1/40 crappie jigs with.
Answer: maybe if you used 6-10 lb test braided line and a medium or medium-light rod. haven't tried it myself.
Answer: Yes. This is for finesse presentations, including smaller Rooster Tails and crappie jigs.
Answer: Yes I have thrown 1/8th and 1/6th oz rostertails with it. No problem
Answer: Yes, with a very soft tip rod
Answer: Absolutely.
Q:
whats the heaviest lure i can cast with this?
Answer: This is a great reel. However, it has a very large diameter spool and doesn’t hold a lot of line. I have several and use them for wackyworms and Senkos. If you want to throw anything larger than 1/4 ounce you’ll run the risk of running out of line on long casts. If you are going to use it for crank baits, spoons, or spinnerbaits, you would be better off choosing a different KastKing model.
Answer: Probably a quarter ounce, but I found this reel to be very flawed. There was a strange vibration from the spool when I casted. It also casted to the left side for some weird reason. I never had a reel do that before. I ended up returning it. It just didn't work good at all.
Answer: I would say that depends more on the line and rod you pair with it. I personally don’t use anything heavier then 1/4 oz.
Q:
Anyone removed the handle? i did, lost something, and drag star no longer clicks. what did i loose? thanks.
Answer: It's a ball that sits on the white plastic and a spring. that creates the clicking sound. check your schematics and reach out to kastking customer support to buy replacement or to further discuss if you don't have the schematics
Answer: don't know. take it to a reel repair shop
Q:
We’re is this reel made?
Answer: probably China. majority of fishing tackle made today is made there.
Answer: china
Answer: China
Q:
what's the capacity for 20 lbs braid?
Answer: BFS stands for “bait cast finesse system.” It’s an ultralight system. Not sure that 20 lbs. braid is ultralight. This reel has a small capacity to allow the casting of light lures on light line. I’d suggest 8 lbs. braid as the max.
Answer: This is a finesse reel so I would not run 20 lb braid to to the spool capacity. the highest I run is 15 lb braid And the reel operates as advertised. Hope this helps.
Answer: I only got about 100 yards of 2 lb braid so I don’t think you’ll get much 20 lb braid.
Answer: Approximately 65 yards. This is a low line capacity reel. It’s designed for finesse fishing. If you are throwing anything over 1/4 ounce, you would be better off with another KastKing model.
Answer: This is a BFS reel. 2-4 lb line is the norm.
Answer: It's rated for 8lb or lighter mono. Has large diameter spool with small capacity meant for BFS/ultralight techniques.
Product reviews of KastKing Zephyr BFS Baitcasting Reel – Carbon Fiber BFS Fishing Reel – 5.6 OZ – Double Shielded 6+1 BB – 7.2:1 Gear Ratio Fishing Reels,Lightweight Bait Finesse System Freshwater Saltwater Casting Reel
Hookone : Great Finesse Reel
I really enjoy this reel. I liked it so much I bought a second one. The first one I have paired up with a Phenix M1 Med-Lt, Fast Action 6’9” and 6 lbs floro. The second one is paired with the same rod/specs except in the 7’4” length and 8 lbs floro. IMHO, Phenix rods tend to run light so it matches up well. The reel is lightweight and easy to cast. These reels have a super light spool and don’t hold a lot of line to weigh the spool down. I haven’t noticed any backlash problems except for “operator error” induced situations… LOL. I have several other Kastking baitcasters and have not run into any quality issues. IMHO, It’s a great reel at a great price. If your considering buying this reel, remember it’s a finesse reel, it’s not meant to throw heavy baits. But if you are looking for a BFS reel, this is one great buy.
George V. : nice looking reel
just put some string on the reel but haven't used it as yet. the reel looks great. I purchased the reel for its light weight & reported ability to cast light weights on baitcasting gear.
Super Star : Great reel for the price
Spool holds alot less line than my other reels, casting and retrieve is very smooth...
kevin simpson : Kastking is the best!!
I love this reel i got the left hand and its so smooth and awesome looking!!!
Crappie fever : Low cost option
These are good reels for the price and will last with light use. I have two of the bait casters and there Sharkey III spinning reel. With heavy use they wear out faster than they should. But it's a cost effective.option for a bait finesse reel
Steve M : Nice reel
I own many Kastking products, and I never had an issue
Josh Council : Great BFS reel
Great BFS reel for the money. I’ve learned to not put very much line on too much and backlashes are pretty gnarly and the lines finds its way on the side under the spool. Other than this it is a great reel
Mike Smith : Quality appears to be very high
I just got it so this is only a first impression but it seems really sturdy and light weight. I watched the YouTube reviews where people said the handles had play in them but mine are nice and tight. I had seen some people say they didn’t like the reeling mechanism because it was loud or not smooth enough but I can barely hear it and it feels smooth like butter to me. The braking dial looks really nice and is easy to read. The drag knob is pretty nice except there is no numerical indicators on it but that’s not a huge deal since most people usually just set the drag by feel anyway.
I’m super excited to try it out but unfortunately the matching zephyr rods aren’t available on Amazon so I will be waiting a few weeks on the rod to come from China. Kastking if you read these please get your zephyr rods on Amazon so people can get the complete bfs setup on here or better yet offer them as a reel/rod combo.
I will update this with more details once I get a chance to actually use it on the water.
W. E. Cobble : Avoid
I have always had an interest in BFS baitcasting, and I had hoped that the Kastking ZEPHYR would be a viable entry. No joy, sadly. The negative reviews are more or less on target: poor machining, poor cast control, and generally limited usability. I can achieve better -- and more consistent -- performance from my Daiwa Tatula SV TW on comparable size/mass lures. And mind you, the Tatula SV TW is *not* marketed as a BFS reel. The ZEPHYR is my most disappointing reel purchase to-date, and arguably the last Kastking that I will ever buy.
Caleb S. : I wanted to like it - but I just can’t
I really wanted to like this reel for the price point. There were many people online recommending this reel and for the price you can cast lightweight baits. I was able to throw a 2 gram lure about 30 feet. That isn’t too bad, but when compared to the Shimano Curado BFS for twice the price, you can cast three times a far. If you are on a budget you could buy this or you could stick with the spinning combo which you may get more bang for your buck with.
Crappie fever : Low cost option
These are good reels for the price and will last with light use. I have two of the bait casters and there Sharkey III spinning reel. With heavy use they wear out faster than they should. But it's a cost effective.option for a bait finesse reel
Barbara Weissenberger : Great reel
Great reel Kastking is up there with Shimano as far as quality. Great reel
Ice Sheriff JT : Preforms as advertised and then some.
The best finesse reel for the price hands down.
Scott : Great price for BFS reel
This reel seems very well made. I am just getting into BFS and this is absolutely a great price point to get started. Can't wait until I can find a Zephyr rod to match. I wish it had a drag clicker, but overall I am very satisfied.
David from Missouri : Another great kastking product
This is another great kastking product . Casts realy easy no birdnests or tangles . Bought to use skipping docks . 14lb fluorocarbon line. It will go along with the rest of my kastking reels.
EF. : Nice set up
Awesome little bfs reel, hard to find anything in the market for under $300!
Mike Smith : Quality appears to be very high

Bill C. : Great reel.
This is a great reel for the money. It’s very smooth and has a nice drag. It is. Low capacity reel and is good for braided line. You won’t need to use backing. I’m slowly filling my deck with them.
4Z ICE : Smooth gear retrieve
Light line light jigs light real light rod exstream fast casting what else do you want for a 60+ dollar real awesome just awesome.
Sullivan : First BFS
Reel arrived on time and feels great. Added 4lb line and can’t wait to use it. Just got tired of lower accuracy casts I was getting from my UL spinning setup. Likely could have gotten better over time, but baitcasters just feel more at hone to me and looking forward to my first BFS!
AaronW : Excellent BFS Reel
Very smooth, high quality reel. A little bit "plasticy" feeling, but very acceptable, especially for the price. Knobs are comfortable, and I can easily cast 1/8oz jigs with it. Not quite the quality of my Shimano Curado BFS, but for 1/3 of the price it is amazingly close. Keep it up, Kastking!
Nana Kathy : New to BFS!
New to BFS casting. The reel handles well. Only practicing so far. Looking forward to a new angling adventure.
Nana Kathy : New to BFS!
New to BFS casting. The reel handles well. Only practicing so far. Looking forward to a new angling adventure.
Zee Whitehead : Satisfied
Purchased reel for BFS to use smaller line in order to cast smaller baits and I’m a satisfied customer! Great buy.
peter j konrad jr : Love my new kastking bfs.
Light line light lure it doesn't matter. If you have it adjusted right it will cast a good distance. Great price.
Amazon Customer : Budget BTS
This is my first BTS reel and only second baitcaster so I don't have a lot to compare it to besides the research I had done leading to this purchase. Overall, it's lightweight and feels pretty solid. Nothing wiggles and shakes weird like some of the other cheap gear does. Everything seems to spin smoothly without any weird friction points.
It's by far the cheapest route into BTS fishing considering all other options are $300+ and/or require getting customer parts for other already expensive reels. Unfortunately (at the time of purchase anyway) Amazon doesn't carry the matching Zephyr rod and ultralight casting rods are just as few and far between as the reels so I'll have to do some more research.
I'll post a picture and an update once I get it paired with a rod and I have the chance to spend some proper time with it.
Maurice Chambers : Good skipping reel
I use on heavy action rod for skipping under docks, easy to setup and does not backlash when skipping, great value for the money.
Ignas J. : Great quality build
Love it
Eugene Fong : Best value on a BFS reel
Incredible value for a BFS. Can beat the performance for the price.
Ricky2117 : Waste of money
It was smooth without line but as soon I spooned it with 4lb mono…It rubbed so bad so I re-spooled it with 2lb and same results. Took off the side plate and notice the bearing on the spool had a lot of play. I waited to long and now I can’t return it. Waste of money and I don’t want to spend more money on bearing upgrades
Josh Council : Great BFS reel
Great BFS reel for the money. I’ve learned to not put very much line on too much and backlashes are pretty gnarly and the lines finds its way on the side under the spool. Other than this it is a great reel
BIGBADCHULAR : Pond hopper
Needed something for the small ponds. This should work perfectly w/ the small lures I typically throw
Chris Gillman : Awesome!
Kast king reels have become my favorite reels. The are inexpensive and work the same as any other expensive reels. I highly recommend this product.
Marco : Great build and BFS reel for the cost
Light weight and cheap! AmaZed at how great the quality is! Kast King is definitely winning!
Amazon Customer : Brake dial popped off
For close to $70 it would’ve been nice to not have the magnetic braking dial fall off.... at least I was able to experience Kant King’s top shelf customer service..... seriously.... Kast King will be a repeat name brand for me because of their customer service:)
Nana Kathy : New to BFS!
New to BFS casting. The reel handles well. Only practicing so far. Looking forward to a new angling adventure.
Beam-me-up-Scotty : Impressive UL Baitcaster
With the large light spool makes casting lightweight crappie and brem rigs possible. Haven't had very long, we'll see how reliability compares to my Quantam, Daiwa, and Ambassador.
Scott : Great price for BFS reel
This reel seems very well made. I am just getting into BFS and this is absolutely a great price point to get started. Can't wait until I can find a Zephyr rod to match. I wish it had a drag clicker, but overall I am very satisfied.
Axel : Very nice reel for the money you cannot beat it
Sturdiness is okay for what you paid still very nice and comfortable to palm
RF : I'm liking Kastking
For my first try with a baitcasting reel, I went with Kastking Royale Legend because it had good ratings, it was only $40, and it had 2 braking systems which were advertised to prevent backlashes and overruns. If I couldn't handle the switch to baitcasting, I only sacrificed $40. I found the Kastking Royale Legend to be built like a tank (a little heavy, but that didn't bother me), very sturdy, and all the mechanics smooth. This reel broke me in to baitcasting and did a good job of it. My next reel progression took me to a Daiwa Tatula SV TW 103HS. With a Black Friday deal, I got a good price, even though I spent more than my budget. As my skills improved, I wanted to use baitcasting for trout, crappie, and our yearly shad run. I wanted ultralight fishing with a baitcaster. I found a guy on YouTube that was on the same mission. Hope I can name him here, The Reel Test. He battles reel against reel to find the best baitcasting equipment in all categories, but his primary mission is to find the best baitcasting combination for throwing a Trout Magnet the furtherest (is that a word?). Just the other day I noticed he tested a new Bait Finesse System (new words for ultralight) reel from Kastking, the Zephyr, for $69. I liked his review and the features of the reel and thanks to Amazon, it was in my hands in less than 24 hours. Today I tested it for the first time with 4 lb test fluorocarban and a 6' ultralight rod. It feels good and I have no complaints. Same sturdy, smooth feel as my first Kastking at a much lighter weight. I think I'm going to be using this combo for a long time.
Amazon Customer : Great bfs reel
Throws light tackle very well feels very nice and light in hand
Bill C. : Great reel.
This is a great reel for the money. It’s very smooth and has a nice drag. It is. Low capacity reel and is good for braided line. You won’t need to use backing. I’m slowly filling my deck with them.
Phillip S : Light lure casting.
Good value BFS reel for the money. Very easy to cast and flip Ned rids on a 7' baitcasting setup.
Rodi : Great Reel
Super smooth casts plus it looks really good.
Marco : Great build and BFS reel for the cost
Light weight and cheap! AmaZed at how great the quality is! Kast King is definitely winning!
Cruceru Costin : Nice trout bfs reel..
A very good bfs reel...Capable to throw down to 0.8 grams with the proper rod (fiberglass type)...
Wayne Mumau : Excellent reel.
Fished this reel 1 day after receiving it. Very pleased with the quality and adjustability. Was casting 1/32 oz. jig and swimbait with ease. Would definitely recommend to anyone wishing to get into BFS fishing.
EF. : Nice set up
Awesome little bfs reel, hard to find anything in the market for under $300!
Gina Jackson : Like how it feels
Very lightweight! Love the size and the smooth turn of the bearings. Casts a good ways with a super light lure!
