Questions about Okuma Convector Line Counter Levelwind Trolling Reel
Q:
Is the convector cv30 d is that a right handed retrieve?
Answer: Yes, it is right handed. The LX is left handed.
Answer: yes, the picture is deceiving, the picture is actually showing the top of the real so you can see the line counter. You would rotate the real from right to left 90deg. to use it.
Answer: yes
Q:
este carrete es mano izquierda
Answer: Es correcto, el modelo es para mano izquierda.
Q:
How does braided line work on this reel?
Answer: Braided line works excellent in this reel. I would say it’s best value for the money according to the charter captains and first mates that shop with us.
Answer: I don't use braided its mono for me but it is "not" going to be a problem this reel is pretty good value reel but it did lock up on me after a few times out so i took the plates on both sides off and lubed the heck out of it and its been working fine now. Would i buy again sure just pick up some good lube too. Note: this is not for casting so if that is the way your going to use it look elsewhere.
Answer: Sorry, I have no experience with braided line.
Answer: Braid work fine but the reel sucks. Get the cold water reels or just buy a diawa instead.
Answer: Works fine you may want to have some backing before the braid depending on how much braid your using
Answer: Works good, I back fill with mono to save on using so much braid.
Answer: I run a musky fishing charter business and run braided line on these all the time. No problems.
Answer: Use fire line on all my line counter rods.
Answer: Excellent !!!
Q:
What is the gear ratchell 6 to 1,or 4 to 1?
Answer: You can now get the. Convector in both speeds 6:1 and 4:1… you can pick your choice. 6:1 is slightly more expensive..Happy Fishing .
Answer: CV-20D 2BB+1RB
Answer: 4 to 1
Answer: It is 4:1
Answer: I have the CV20DLX right hand retrieve the gear ratio is 5.1.1
Q:
Is the handle on the left or right hand side of this reel?
Answer: As the photo shows, the level wind is on the front of the reel, and the handle is on the right side. I have 2 of them I use for trolling in the Sea of Cortes and with 5 years of hard use, they are still very good. Generally if there were a left handed version of this reel the number would be CV-451, the 1 designating left hand retrieve.
Answer: The CV-45D reel is a right handed model .
Answer: You can order the way you want
Q:
Bought my cv-30d, 310 in 02-2019. used it for the first time yesterday (11-2019). reel wont take up line. the line guide just moves back & forth. why?
Answer: I would check the star and make sure the drag is tightened. If the star drag is tightened and the guide is moving back and forth, the spool will be turning as well. If line is not picking up when the drag is tightened and the spool is engaged , using braided line without any backing will cause the line to slip around the arbor of the spool when any tension is applied.
Answer: 1. The knot to the spool is loose, so it won't pick up the line when you rewind 2. check the star drag.
Answer: Most likely cause is that the star drag or spool tension is too loose.
Answer: Well, assuming that you have the star drag tightened down, it's probably defective?
Answer: Haha. I know why .
Q:
Whats better, this reel or the ma-45dx?
Answer: The Convector is by far the better of the two. All I own are Convector line counter reels, use them for salmon and walleye fishing. Hope this helps just need to watch for them to go on sale.
Answer: I do not know the answer, but I will say I have been using Okuma reels for about 10 years for trolling and now musky fishing.
Answer: I use my trolling for salmon . No problem. Love it
Q:
Aluminum spool correct ?
Answer: Yes aluminum spool
Answer: Yes
Q:
is the convector CV-45D a Left hand wind?
Answer: No its not....... Left hand Convectors end in DLX There website has it all info, Link is below:
Answer: You can order them left hand
Q:
Is this a right handed reel?
Answer: The CV-20D is a right handed reel.
Answer: Yes it’s a right handed reel, I have about 25 of them. If you look at the reel where the fishing line comes out , the counter and the handle should be on the right side when looking straight down from the top.
Answer: Mine is but I think it also comes in left-handed.
Answer: yes
Answer: Yes
Q:
I know of the switch on the convectors, when switched to off, is it common for trolling reels to still have such a loud click when retrieving ?
Answer: I call it the clicker...and mine still clicks but its a quite click but it still clicks....Its about a 1/3 the noise when switch in the up position maybe even a 1/4 of the noise.
Answer: Typically when you move the slide to turn the clicker off it will be silent upon letting line out. When retrieving line with the clicker off there is still an audible click but it is considerably muted.
Answer: Yes
Q:
How much line does each reel hold?
Answer: It depends on which series Convector you purchase. They have a 15, 20, 30 and 45 series. The 15 being the smallest and the 45 being the largest reel. Your best bet is to go to Okuma's website and look at the specs for each size. They will list line capacity based on the test weight of the line you use.
Q:
Is it supposed to have that clicking sound when reeling?
Answer: There is a little recessed switch on the side plate that controls that clicking sound.
Answer: The bait clicker can be turned off or on. You can turn the clicker off by moving the clicker button on the side plate.
Answer: Yes. There is a small, silver switch on the side opposite the handle which engages/disengages the clicker.
Answer: flip the silver button on the side down
Answer: Use the button on the side to turn it off
Answer: Yes it is
Q:
Is this reel appropriate for jigging or is it too heavy?
Answer: I’ve never tried to use it for jigging myself. I would think it might be a little heavy to jig with and won’t get you the fast action that a light reel and pole would give. I use it for trolling or bottom bouncing. With the line counter you can always get it back to the same depth that you are getting fish at. It’s a great reel.
Answer: Don’t see why you couldn’t. It is a medium sized real. I pretty much troll with mine. Good reel!
Answer: This reel is too heavy for jigging. Use it for trolling and fishing muskys.
Answer: This reel is too heavy to be used for jigging. It is good for musky fishing and also great for trolling useing planer boards because of the line counter.
Q:
Can you spool with copper?
Answer: yes. the Convector reels can be used with copper.
Answer: Drag is terrible don’t buy these
Answer: Yes
Q:
Is this a two speed reel?
Answer: It's variable speed. The faster you reel it, the faster the line comes in.
Answer: This is a one speed reel. Two speed reels tend to be much more expensive.
Answer: No, it is not a two speed reel. it is a single speed with a bait feed, clicker button.
Answer: One speed.
Answer: Not to my knowledge. I've used it and there appears to be only one speed.
Answer: No
Answer: No
Answer: No
Answer: No, it is not.
Q:
do they make the Okuma t 50 w reel and how much
Q:

Q:
Are these all left handed reels? The picture shows a left handed reel for every model.
Answer: No, if you look in the description it shows what ones are right and left handed reels
Answer: the models with lx in the model # are lefty, all others are righty.
Answer: i ordered the cv-20d's, they were right handed. i think they should all be right handed unless specified as left handed.
Answer: No. Models marked as DLX are left handed. The ones marked as D are right handed.
Q:
Can you turn off the clicker
Answer: Yes, you can turn the bait clicker on and off by moving the clicker button to the off position.
Answer: Yes, you can
Q:
I received convector cv-30dlx today and is larger than i'm used to. i downrigger fish for pike , bass, and lake trout .to big for that?
Answer: I love the reel but use it for ocean fishing so I don't know. The depth counter is extremely useful.
Answer: I down rigger and troll for Rainbow trout and dolly varden all the time. This is a perfect sized reel for you. Put some 12lb test line on and enjoy!
Answer: No, not too large. I use planer boards and catch loads of fish with this reel. Also catch many Muskies with it soaking suckers.
Answer: Def too big. I hated these and the drag was terrible.
Answer: I use this reel for king salmon
Answer: Awesome real
Q:
When I put line on my new convector 45LS it puts more on the right then the left is there a fix for this
Answer: usually, the problem is the way you hold the line when filling the reel. I hold the line with my fingers just in front of the reel. if it gets low on one side I simply move my hand over the side that's low. if it starts getting high on one side I hold the ling over to the other side. I have this issue on all brands of level wind reels. if your holding the line with your hand and holding it to the left of center it's going to be low on the right side.
Answer: Throw out the reel and buy a better one. These have. A Terri me drag anyways.
Product reviews of Okuma Convector Line Counter Levelwind Trolling Reel
Vincent : I went on the second fishing trip and the reel broke.
Do not buy this reel, I went on the second fishing trip and the reel broke. Not only cost me the reel but the fishing trip wa ruined. Should provide better warranty service.
Shane : Awesome reel
This is a great piece of equipment for trolling for salmon. I have pulled in 25lb+ fish on this reel. I also have the Magda and this was worth the extra money. At the time I purchased it is was only $10 more than the Magda - a no-brainer. I would say it is worth up to $25 more.
My3Sons : works great, as
Packaged well, works great, as described
Todd Young : Five Stars
For the price range these are the best quality reels out there.
Bill : Convector
Great reel for the money, use it for Lake Ontario salmon.

william vogelzang : Not worth the money
I recently purchased three new Diawa reels and three new Okuma Convector reels for walleye trolling. the Diawa reels are great, very dependable. I bought the Okumas hoping they would have better line counters than the cheaper Okumas that I have. The line counters stick and don't record about the amount of line out. The new ones were about $85 each and unfortunately have the same crummy line counters as the cheap ones. Very disappointing. Wish I had bought all Diawas
Bill : Gears are brass not stainless
I had 1 of these reels and liked them so much I bought 2 more for musky trolling. I have had no problems and think they are excellent value for the price. I serviced one yesterday, and to my surprise the pinion and main gear are not stainless as Amazon claims in their description (and still does). This was one of the big selling points for me on that made me choose it over other reels. Also, the reels are not as easy to service as some of the online tear downs would indicate. They have removed the stainless steel holding plates and it is now 1 piece plastic and is significantly more complicated to service than I hoped.
Cheryl Shively : okuma convectors
These are great reels, the price makes them even better. I have 6 on board already and needed these to replace some older ones of another brand that couldn't do the job.
Jason L. : My go-to for Kokanee in northern CA, also some setup advice
This reel in the 15 size hits a sweet spot in price AND function for fishing Kokanee in Northern California. I've even seen them on sale for as low as $56. Match this with an Eagle Claw Kokanee rod for about $20 (at big blue WM) and you have a dang good setup on the cheap for trolling with downriggers. I'd rather have more setups running than be the guy with only 1-$400 setup. I'll normally fill it with 8-10lb Trilene Big Game in clear. I know, 10lb is probably overkill but it IS more accurate for the line counter. The clicker is VERY NICE and plenty loud. Having a clicker allows you to be hands off the reel while lowering your downrigger. You simply release the bail and use just the clicker (i.e. no thumb) which gives just enough tension so you don't "rats nest" the reel while you spool down the downrigger. This makes stacking multiple lines on one downrigger WAY EASIER. I'll never go back to a downrigger reel without a clicker after using one.
FYI - I also have a Okuma Magda reel that came on my Okuma Kokanee Aveon combo and it's drag is not nearly as good as this one. It'll loosen/tighten while reeling in fish which gets VERY annoying. I wish I had bought the combo mentioned above over the Aveon one. Now the Aveon is a 3rd setup that I use only when taking extra people fishing.
Amazon Customer : Great for guests and nearly disposable at $60
Just purchased my fifth Convector 20D. I've been fishing them for years plunking for salmon & steelhead. We haven't had one fail and we are probably catching on average twenty fish a year on them. Great for guests and nearly disposable at $60.
Jessica : Broke
Drag clicker was broke when product was supposed to be brand new. Would like a replacement.

Amazon Customer : Just what I needed
Works well
Beuford T Justice : Nice counter reel
Use it for Walleye and Kokanee fishing. Works great!
Steven B. : Tried and true
I bought this because the price was right, it looks like it was a return item that was never used. I have 6 more of these so for $58 it was a good buy. The only thing I don't like about these reels is the line counter button, its too easy to bump it when putting on the planer board but just have to be careful.
Mentor22 : Four Stars
Great reel at a great price.
Michael H. : Two Stars
one of the depth gauges failed during 1st summer. Would not expect that for a reel at this price.
mark goodwin : Four Stars
great reel
Robert : love them
Bought four of these for my trolling poles. Replaced Shakespeare 20 series. Much nicer!
I would buy again.
Mike Levitt : Okay
It's a great name but the reel I received has a click or a thump when I reel so I'm not sure if something is off inside. I've ordered a second so ill see if they both have the same problem.
Travis : Gears slipping before installed on pole
Didn't even get it on the reel before I sent it back... was simply stringing it up, and the gears were slipping under very minimal load generated by hand... Thought I'd give them a try because they make good CNC machinery haha. Wrong.
Scout : Perfect Musky Reel
Have many of these. It is a great reel for larger fish. Holds up well under pressure. Would buy again.
Mentor22 : Four Stars
Great reel at a great price.
Amazon Customer : Five Stars
Great for reeling the large King Salmon on Lake Michigan
Armando101 : Very Good Rod/Reel Combo
This is a great rod/reel combo. I bought it for trolling at Big Bear Lake. One note to others is that if you plan to use lead core line, you do NOT need a line counter.
Paul : What a great reel
I got one of these reels afew weeks ago and was so happy with it I ended up ordering more. These will be replacing all my Magna 20dtx reel I just got in this spring. Wish I would have just ordered these 1st
SK : poor
after used couple time on saltwater fishing, linecounter jammed and inside plastic gear was broken.

This my 1st season with these reel fishing salmon on the Great Lakes. So far I am very happy with it seems well built with nice smooth ratcheting drags. Only complaint I have is standard shipping took a couple of weeks

Jessica : Broke
Drag clicker was broke when product was supposed to be brand new. Would like a replacement.
Go Bruins : Great except for one flaw.
UPDATE: I gotta bump to four stars. Yes, the modulation of the star drag leaves something to be desired, but the saving grace is that it does "click" when adjusting. You can trust the clicks, even though it doesn't "feel" like you're adjusting the drag force. And once set, it's a nice drag system at this price point. Also - it's holding up fine under kayak saltwater fishing, which is pretty tough on reels.
It is a solid real. Given the price point, it is well constructed and the line counter is accurate. However, on my particular sample, it has one rather significant flaw. The drag is really hard to modulate. It spins freely, then all of a sudden in one quarter spin, it's almost at full force. Otherwise, I love everything else about the reel. It makes making Drag adjustments in real-time a real chore and a guessing game.
Edward Feldhake : Five Stars
Great reel for the price. Works well on Kings and coho.
Kenneth Crenshaw : performed great, the clicker in the real is kind of ...
Took this to Massachusetts, performed great, the clicker in the real is kind of loud but it held up fine with two days of fishing, porgy and sea bass. Must have caught 90 dish not including the babies I through back. Would buy anothe Okuma product.
Mario Anastasia : ... time so far but it the drag has worked perfect. The counter is extremely accurate
I have only use it a few time so far but it the drag has worked perfect. The counter is extremely accurate. it is to early to know about durability. Can this reel be used un salt water conditions?

works well. Only issue I have so far is the reset button for the counter tends to stick down so counter doesn't always work. Going to try a little thin oil on it for today's fishing
Bill : Convector
Great reel for the money, use it for Lake Ontario salmon.
RickM : Works fine for me using lead-core line.
We had two of these and bought a third. We have used them for a little over a year, so we just bought the third. We use them for trolling with lead-core line. Seems to take the abuse of a heavy line and 2-3 lb fish just fine.
J. Wiitanen : Good deal!
I run a charter fishing business on the Great Lakes. I've used a fair number of reels, and this one is bar far the best value for the money. Yes, there are a lot of fancy expensive reels you could buy. But this one has what you need, and for my money, is the most reliable one you can find with a reasonable price.
keithr : Five Stars
Great quality, fit and finish. Tried a Cabelas brand but returned it and went for the Okuma. Great reel!
