Questions about Eagle Claw In Line Ice Reel
Q:
Can I get the alluminum spool separate
Answer: I haven't seen just the spool separate. If that's important to you I'd go with the red version which is a bit more expensive but comes with that spool.
Answer: call phone# 720-941-8700 and ask for a spare spool i've ordered one they were very willing to help
Answer: Not that I've seen...
Q:
can it be used for left hand retrive?
Answer: It is a left hand retrieve, meaning you wind with the left hand. If needed you can switch it to right handed. Tight Lines. Darrin
Answer: They are made for left hand retrieve. If you want to flip it to a right hand retrieve you have to do a little mechanical work.
Answer: An internet search to "change eagle claw reel retrieve" will show you how. Mine was set up for a left hand retrieve right out of the box.
Answer: Yes,the handle is on the left. Very nice reel.
Answer: Yes I switched mine around...go to YouTube
Answer: yes
Q:
What is the line capacity of this reel? Thank you!
Answer: It's listed as 190 yards of 4 lbs test line. I put heavier line on and there was more than enough for fishing large pike.
Answer: I use about 50 yards of Fire Line Crystal Ice 4# test and it doesn't come close to filling the spool.
Q:
Does it have anti reverse?
Answer: Yes. Adjustable drag and on-off drag clicker.
Answer: Yes. Press button in middle of crank handle to disengage and then turn handle forward to engage
Answer: Yes... Just a flip of one of the buttons
Answer: Yes, it is always on and cannot be turned off.
Answer: No
Q:
How many bearings?
Answer: Enough
Q:
is this the magnum version of the reel? the picture looks like it but doesn't specify. the magnum has a much greater rate of retrieve.
Q:
Does this reel have a bait clicker feature?
Answer: It has an option for line clicker and does click upon reeling. I assume it would work for a bait clicker when line is taken out if the drag is set light enough, but not positive. Reel is not in my possession at the moment, it is at my lake cottage, so I can't double check that feature. It is a real nice smooth reel for the $$.
Answer: No
Answer: Yes it does
Q:
After using yhos i constantly get back lashing, is there some way to prevent this?
Answer: You can tighten the drag to prevent the back lash.
Answer: You should be able to tighten the drag on the reel. it makes it harder to let line out, though. I personally leave the reel lose and keep my hand lightly on the spool. It takes time to get used to it
Answer: i hope your not trying to cast this reel. its made for icefishing. when you release the spool it goes into freefall, for getting your bait down to fish.
Answer: Never had that problem. I presume you are not attempting to cast or flip, but just a straight down drop. The drop is free spool, then take a turn to engage the spool, it's always good to keep some tension on the line. Hope this helps..
Answer: A just the speed of descent and use your thumb on the spool
Answer: Tighten the spool tension
Q:
what is the gear ratio ?
Q:
Can you switch right to left retrieves
Answer: yes go to (blog/switching-inline-reel-left-right-hand-retrieve) can be either left or right hand retrieve nice reel
Answer: It comes left handed that's what I like so I didn't mess with it but there's a tackle shop in town said they changed some over so it can be done I just don't know how difficult it is. Hope this helps.
Answer: Yes you can. Tight Lines. Darrin
Answer: I have not had the need to do it, but yes it can be done. There is a video on youtube on how to do it.
Answer: Yes. I believe there is a video on utube describing the procedure.
Q:
Can you cast it
Answer: This reel is not really meant to be casted. It is made to feed line straight down for ice fishing.
Answer: No, it's for ice fishing. Get a baitcaster reel if you want to cast.
Answer: haven't used the reels yet but I don't thing the reel made for casting
Q:
Could you use this as a fly fishing reel?
Answer: Might be able to as it is free spooling.
Answer: I don't know why not but I wouldn't because the handle is a little big and might get in the way
Q:
How to get refund
Q:
Is this a push button release or manually pull line out?
Answer: It is a push button release but the easiest way to fish it is to hit the release button then pull out the line with one hand while a finger from the other hand keeps tension on the real. Very easy to do. I found the light lures I use ice fishing meant having the tension on the reel so loose that overruns would occur if you push the button and just let the lure free fall. Set the tension loose and manage the with your fingers.
Answer: Push button release
Answer: It does have a Free spool button. I think that is what you mean. You press a button and the line is released, and your Jig will drop.
Answer: Push button, then line spool free wheels so lure can fall down the ice hole.
Answer: Push button, then line spool free wheels so lure can fall down the ice hole.
Answer: Push button
Answer: Free spooling
Q:
What is the length of the mounting foot on the reel?
Answer: I don’t know about the land but all my 1000 spinning reels I’ve had on this and it fits them
Answer: its standard, just buy it, it is a very good quality reel, after all it says "eagle claw"
Q:
good for pike
Answer: not big ones, great for panfish etc.
Q:
is this reel right or left hand?
Answer: Out of the package it is left hand retrieve but it can be converted to right hand as well. Tight Lines. Darrin
Answer: left handed -to reel in line you have to use your left hand i see no way to make it a right handed reel
Answer: reel with left hand out of the box...
Answer: This reel is a standard Left Hand Retrieve but several people have put instructions on the internet to flip it to a Right Hand Retrieve. Its just like 5 small steps.
Q:
Does the line clicker always click or can it be turned off?
Answer: The clicker can be turned off. It only works when the drag is exceeded and the line is being pulled from the reel. It does not work during free-spool.
Answer: There is a sliding button which you can turn the clicker on or off.
Answer: Yes, the clicker can be turned off with the switch on the right side of the reel. Easy, peasy.
Answer: There’s a silver switch on the side of the rail that turns the clicker off handoff
Q:
what color is it?
Answer: Grey or carbon color
Answer: The picture is the one
Q:
can you pistol grip this reel
Answer: its meant to be used underneath the rod instead of on top like a regular pistol grip
Q:
Where is the reel manufactured?
Answer: I checked the reel and cannot find where it is manufactured. Check Sportsman's Guide cause that is where mine came from. I've used them for two years and they are well made.

Kent Robertson : first time in line user
This reel properly set up will not birds nest and eliminates memory in the line. I wont go back to traditional rells.
dannie yaple : Well worth it
Great reel stands up like a tip up when running for tip ups. Light weight great feel. My buddy has a 60 dollar reel. And can't tell the difference. He paid for more colors if you asked me.
Amazon Customer : Rip off.
The reel spool slips won't wind back your bait or the fish. I used this reel four times. Almost costs the price of the reel to send back to Eagle Claw for repair. Consumer rip off.
james s. : Good reel for shallow water
Nice reel for the money
Amazon Customer : its working

Cole Porter : Great reel

mtnmann44 : Baitcasters dream.
If you understand baitcaster. You'll love this type of reel. Keeps the memory out of the line. Comes off smooth. I have 2 now. And Im thinking about another in the near future.
Amazon Customer : Great ice reel for the money
This Eagle Claw ice reel is a great addition to the fishing gear. I have several that I use myself, and now I buy them as gifts for friends. With the push of a button, the line goes out effortlessly, and when you reach the desired depth, just give the crank a small turn to engage the spool. What I like best about this reel is when I’m fishing with a novice fisherman, and a fish is taking line, often an inexperienced person will continue reeling, even though line is going out. When that happens with an open faced reel, the line just gets twisted, causing a bad tangle, which turns the beginners day into a nightmare. This reel never does that, because it’s a simple winch spool. They can crank all day and never tangle. The only negative thing I can say about this reel is that you need to hold a finger on the spool when it is in freewheeling mode. If not, it can result in a backlash. I hope this helps.
Trevor Bourque : Loose screws..
Good real
Jolanta Belliveau : Good little reel
Good value for the price. Used it probably 40 times, no real issues. Not as smooth as the high end inline reels but also $100 bucks cheaper. I will buy another one.
fish monster : what a reel
best reel i have found for ice fishing
Craig : Buy these and toss your spinning reels away
I've been looking at this type of reel for ice fishing for 2 years and finally pulled the trigger. Wish I would have got them sooner. They are so much better than my open face spinning reels.
I'm going to order 2 more for my wife.
DA : Great quality reel.
Awesome ice fishing reel. I purchased this reel for my dad as a Christmas present. We ice fish for pike and walleye mostly and this reel has been excellent. The quick drop spool feature is extremely useful dropping the hook and bait down the holes and the adjustable drag is sufficient even for fighting larger fish. My dad already wants another similar reel and my friend already purchased one for himself. It was easy to change the reel direction for right hand reel. Glad I got this reel!
JB : Button that releases spool fell off
First trip out button that releases spool fell off and down the hole in ice. reel now useless. looks like it was threaded on but couldn't have been tightened.
jacob : Great service
Awesome real.
Donald Winsley : an excellent reel at an excellent price
I have five of these reels now and ice fish with nothing else. Weather 2lb test for gills or 6lb for walleyes, it will do the job you need to be done, Catch Fish>
Jay Bigelow : Fish ON!
This is a nice little reel. It's very similar to a baitcaster. It has a lot of control. ....drag,line speed, bait click just like a full size reel
DALE S. : worked once until I got a fish on
Reel slips and doesn't stay in gear. I took it apart and everything looks fine until I replace the retaining cap then the gears don't seat fully to engage the reel. Going to try another one in case this is a lemon.
Amazon Customer : Smooth reel
I liked the reel, I use it for crappie fishing on a long pole. I did have to switch the reel to a right handed retrieve which can be done after You watch a video on YouTube. Does take some getting use to
Bob Gamwell : Eagle Claw Reel
Have not used any of the reels (purchased 3) awaiting this winter's fishing season. The reels do appear to be well made, have a smooth action but not action tested by me to date. Purchased this brand because it has a very simple action (less moving parts), unlike my old spinning reels that tend to freeze-up.
Dale Voice : Good but not perfect!
I have found this reel to be a very good ice fishing reel but I would make some changes to it. First, there is no reason for the double handle on thios reel. I have removed half of the handle which makes the reel lighter and less cumbersome. The star for the drag controll could be smaller also to reduce weight. Overall this reel has functioned very well so far this winter and I have caught over 200 Bluegills with it!
Ashley Schoenborn : Only works with light mono
This only works with light mono. The drag is a pain too
JB : Button that releases spool fell off
First trip out button that releases spool fell off and down the hole in ice. reel now useless. looks like it was threaded on but couldn't have been tightened.
Susan Walker : Five Stars
I loved it works great but the ice melted too fast to try it fully.
Bradley D Trisdale : They work great
Great reels for the price
Rita Booker : Five Stars
Perfect reel for crappie fishing with long pole
Eric R : Meh at best
Meh at best. For any avid adult ice angler that ises a pistol grip style, the crank handle is way too tight to the reel body and is uncomfortable. This reel could certainly use a longer reel stem which would make it far more comfortable. I had to file the inner spool face to stop it from rubbing against the body. I guess not too bad for the price but it’s certainly not the quality of something like a 13 fishing ice reel
fish monster : what a reel
best reel i have found for ice fishing
Andy Koschmann : Reel should be a work in progress
I bought two of these reels, one for me and one for my 19 year old son. I have personally caught in excess of 40 pan fish on my reel. It is a reel with a lot of potential but not perfect. I like the fact that it has a drag, but I fish with 2lb test. The drag is not nearly smooth enough to be of any benefit to 2lb test. If you adjust your star drag so the 2lb test does not break, the star drag will quickly become so lose that the spool will spin free, making a hookset impossible and tangled line probable. The drag is not smooth at all, grabbing at certain points as the spool back spins. If you hold the rod pencil style, it can be difficult to keep your palm off the back spinning spool when dealing with larger fish. I have large hands, so take that into consideration. If there was a shield around the spool where your palm rests, it would be much better. Another thing that would help is if the stem was about an inch longer, even half and inch would help with palm clearance. I have also had difficulty with my line wrapping itself around the knob at the center of the spool. Still have not figured out why this happens. I would love to see a few changes made to this reel. I caught most of the fish in one outing and am convinced the high catch rate was due to reduced line twist, as I greatly out fished the person sitting right next to me using a spinning reel. Obviously other factors measure in, but I still think an in-line reel is a better option. Hope this helps!
L.Lum : Great when it works
this was my first experience with this type of reel. Had this for one season of ice fishing, and the line keeps slipping past the line guard and gets tangled in your reel. If left unnoticed it gets in the gears and jams up the reel. Unless you take it completely apart to clean out the gears it doesn't last long. Worked fine when not tangled.

birdhunternd : It's a Big One!
Love this style of reel for ice fishing. No more line twist from reeling up your line. Wish I would've switched years ago.
Sawyer Berg : Nice In Line Reel
I picked up another pair of these reels for a pair of new custom panfish rods. The reels work real ice for the money and over all are a nice product. the two complaints that I have are there is no guard on the back of the rod to prevent your hand from rubbing against the spool when you are fishing. A little change in my grip and fishing with smaller gloves or no gloves at all seem to have fixed this. I also notice that due to a gap between the spool and the main frame, when jigging or setting the hook I have had the line fall out of the reel, then get wrapped around other parts of the reel, causing me to break the line when trying to retrieve. once I noticed this issue a little bit more care when I am fishing and I don't have these issues any more.
over all a good reel for the money just took a little bit of getting use to for me. Will purchase this reel to put on the next ice rod I decide to build.
Jolanta Belliveau : Good little reel
Good value for the price. Used it probably 40 times, no real issues. Not as smooth as the high end inline reels but also $100 bucks cheaper. I will buy another one.
Alex L. Masters : Four Stars
really enjoy this real. Good response and easy to use.
Ed S. : Wow talk about Disapointing :(
I did read the bad reviews So this is all on me. I took a chance This reel is made poorly with a drag that is almost nonexistent. Please save your money and go for a different reel my suggestion would be the Piscifun ICX I have three ( much nicer quality ) I also have the 13 Fishing D2.7 my review was 3 stars. The Wiixiong 10 bearing spinning reel that I never heard about before I took a chance and ordered one now I have three of them as well at 22$ and 5 stars
Dennis : Great reel! Jig drops like a rock...
My boys and I love these reels! You can drop a small jog right now to the bottom without having to pull out line. It gets you right back down to the fish ASAP! Also less twist in your line.
jack gunn : Five Stars
Works great
