Questions about Pflueger Automatic Fly Reel
Q:
where is it made?
Answer: Cheaply made like most things made today. Search eBay for either a Martin or South Bend automatic fly reels. I bought one of each, unused & in their original box w/instructions for only $32 each. I like the yesteryear fishing gear plus I use one for fly fishing fir Bluegills. Saves time & my arms reeling them in when they’re biting in the Summer.
Answer: Another product that was sent to china for cheap manufacture and that' s exactly what you get. Mine never worked out of the box. Get something else. Pflueger must be aware of this by now but apparently is OK with letting the customer deal with the frustrations and loses.
Answer: China
Q:
How do you return a Furger automatically
Q:
Are pfl;ueger autopmatic still made with thin metal?
Answer: The one I purchased was, however the spring broke the second time I used it. Would not try another one.
Q:
Does this reel have a drag feature.
Answer: Not really. I have not caught anything that required me fighting with the reel since buying it. I guess if the fish is strong enough to pull from a bent rod the equivalent strength of a person stripping line, to load the spring, then yes, there is a drag.
Q:
How many yards of backing is recommended for this reel?
Answer: I have been using 50 yard backing line, plus 15 Yard shooting line #5.
Answer: It depends on the line you use. I had 6wt line on it and I could only use just about a foot of backing.
Answer: I put no backing on mine and barely fit an Air Cell bass line on there. No backing is required on these anyways, no fish in the lakes I work are going to get into your backing. Great reel, this has worked great for me out of the box. It is built like a tank and I think the quality is superb.
Q:
Does this reel come with fishing line already installed or do I have to purchase and install it separately? (Using for a dance piece, not fishing)
Answer: Fly line has to be installed separately. Strongly recommend using backing between fly line and reel arbor, regardless of application -- even if it is dancing around a pole!
Answer: Sorry for the delay in answering your question which is a good one. It does not come with line already installed and you have to purchase your own line and install it separately.
Answer: The reel comes with no line attached.
Answer: No, it does not come with the line, I have not been satisfied with mine, it doesn't want to automatically roll up line like it should
Answer: No line installed, must install backing, line and leader
Q:
Whats the difference between the 1195X and the 1195B ?
Answer: They are the same reel except the 1195X model is the newer version
Answer: Both are faulty and do not work properly. They sound like a train wreck when using.
Answer: Im not familiar with the b model, and neither is pfluegers website.
Q:
what is the difference between box and clam packaging?
Answer: in a box or wrapped in plastic
Q:
does this come with line one it? if not what do I need to get?
Answer: Can't remember. It was a gift. Just buy fishing line for a fly reel. It comes in different weights.
Answer: No it does not come with line You will need to buy a 7/8 weight fly line. and some fly line backing. I like mine.
Answer: dont buy this reel..it is pure junk..They used to be qaulity reels but now they are trash...trust me dont waste your time
Q:
Manuf: warranty ???
Q:
is this reel both left and right hand retreive/
Answer: yes

V.W. : I like it.
I am well aware these type reels are not fors erious fly fishermen, and went out of style 30 years ago. But for walking around a pond casting for bream it is perfect. I am pleased.
Hank in San Antonio : Excellent fly reel
When I went looking for the "old-fashioned" automatic reel, I found this great Pflueger, which is exactly what I wanted! Back in the 1950's, all fly reels were "automatic" - thereby allowing a fly fisherman to handle a lot of line in his hands without cranking a spool. Recent "advancements" have gone to crank reels, which forces you to use one hand on the rod and the other hand on the reel...leaving no hands free for line-handling.

I grew up using an automatic fly reel. Last summer I was out with my brother using a old reel and was totally confused with it, and embarrassed, BTW.
This reel is an excellent purchase and replacement for an old Abu Garcia that someone absconded with.

Old school but well built. It's just what I expected.

First time I wound it sounded like a car crash. Never functioned. Email complaint to Pflueger not answered.
Forget it.
gus kladis : As advertised.
Exactly as described. Seem to work fine.
Amazon Customer : Three Stars
Like every thing else made in China - Poor quality
KEMOSOBEE : VERY PLEASED !
VERY PLEASED !
M. Holmes : Makes fly fishing easy.
Although many fly fishing purists would snub me, I like how this automatic reel makes it easy to manage fly line. Also, bringing in a fish for netting or release is easier when using this reel. Not as light as my manual reels, but well worth the little bit of extra weight.
MadMan : Best Reel Ever
My dad bought me one of these reels when he taught me to fly fish at age 10. That was 38 years ago and I still use it today. It's a little beat up after 38 years, and I have replaced the rod 4 times but the reel still works like new. When I taught my wife I bought her one and it too is still working after about 20 years. I bought her a crank style Mitchell first and had to replace it twice before I convinced her to use the automatic reel, now she loves it and would not trade it for the world. When our 2 kids learned we bought them both this reel. That was 16 and 18 years ago and they both work like new as well. My wife and I go fishing at least 2 or 3 times a month and every weekend in the Fall so they get a lot of use. Bottom line if someone tells you that Pflueger doesn't know how to make a fly reel it's because they have no clue how to use it. I have a combined total of 92 years using this reel and have not had to replace one yet, but if I do you can bet it will be this one. We now have 2 grandkids and they will both be getting one when their time comes.
Morrie : Pflueger 1195B Automatic Fly Reel
Years ago I had a Shakespeare automatic and this reel performs just as well. It helps to control the extra line as I wanted.

CountingWizard : Good when it works, bad when it's broke
My wife had one and it works fine, no issues, but I go out fishing for the first time this year and make my first cast and the spring breaks, so now it doesn't retract. And now all that it is good for is a paper weight, cause it's been too long since I bought it.
Alanhr : By something better or you will wish you had.
Just plain junk. Clutch relaese sticks and winding spring is clunking and skipping when I try to pull out more than 10 -15 ft. of line and won't return fully. Don't they check these things prior. Save your money.
Eric Bowles : Just like daddy's
The reel on my late dad's fly rod flopped on me. This is pretty much the same thing that was on it so I got the same feel and look as my daddy's fly rod. I haven't had a chance to use it yet but it seems to work fine.
D. C. Johnson : Great Reel
I bought this reel just because it looked interesting and I wanted to see how it worked. I like that you don't have to reel in line forever. It works well and is a lot of fun. I'fe only caught very small sunfish with it so far, but it is still a blast!

Amazon Customer : Great fly reel
Great fly reel, Pair with a glass rod and you're fly fishing like gramps. Mines set up on a eagle claw with 5/6 line.
Ive caught hundreds of panfish, trout and bass (3lb max) on this so far this summer and fall. Great line holder, with a super easy learning curve. I take it out on the motorcycle and moto camp while fishing and all the bumps don't worry me at all. Even dirty, full of pond slime, red mud and weeds it keeps my line where it needs to be and lets me pull it out easy.
Pros.
Auto line retriever is a time saver and when you are lazy a good way to pull in a popper around tight cover.
old look, feel and nostalgic.
sturdy.
nice counter balance. A bit heavy, but good for beginners.
Cheap. Really good price point.
easy line control.
Cons.
No batteling in fish with a reel. Its all striping. And without a stack of ones and a cold beer.
Cant take it apart to clean. Those things are worse than glitter bombs. you'll never get it all back in.
Guys with $300 reels will tell you that you need to upgrade. Then you watch them carefully pack their reel into $200 cases and seat belt them in while you huck yours in the bed of your truck, no worries.
a happy person : a good product
It is easy to use and works well
Mark S. Dixon : Made in China
It broke the first time I used it ????
Tabula rasa : Gave it a try, not once but twice
The title kind of explains it. It was time to replace the old Martin reel that had finally died after well ýover 10 years of use. Read the reviews on these reels and the Martins. I went against my better ýjudgment and order this one instead of a Martin. The first one arrived and everything seemed to be in ýorder. First day it was used about 4 hours, no problems. The next day it was used about 2 hours before ýbreaking. It would not retract the line at all. Perhaps it had a factory defect? So I package it up and ýreturn it. New reel arrives so it gets all hooked up and ready to go. Get to where I am going fishing for ýthe day, hook a fish not long after arriving and figure it's going to be a good day. That is until the reel ýrefuses to retract the line yet again. So that's two out of two now. Looks like it's time to give Martin a ýtry again and see if the reviews are as bad as they say. As highly as this is rated compared to the ýMartins it should break before it's even attached to the rod. ý

Amazon Customer : ... these reels a number of yrs ago it works beautifully. I have caught a number of trout bass ...
I bought one of these reels a number of yrs ago it works beautifully. I have caught a number of trout bass and even one huge catfish it handled them w/no problem. An automatic fly reel is my go to reel when wading a fast moving river having an extra hand for balance or fighting the fish is good just zip in the slack line. Good reel
Vance Ahlstrom : Automatic reels are nice but break easily
It works for now but who knows when it'll break. I've been through 2 if these reels in the past few years The reason I like these automatic reels is because I'm somewhat handicapped. Thanks
Ronald F. Long : Pflueger
Good reel. Will see if it holds up like Grandpa's. I have an old one given to me by my Grandfather. Still works well.
tim barger : Obviously they have a issue with this manufacturing
This is my second reel that didn't work correctly. the rewind spring shaft strips after just a few casts. I returned the first one thinking that it was defective, but now the second reel has the same issue. it will not auto rewind after a few casts. unfortunately I took too long to try using it, so I won't be able top return this one.
