Whats the longest stretch of time with out catching one? 2024

fishing user avatarYoTone reply :

In the beginning of last week I had a nice run of catches but the last few days has been frustrating.

I know its a game of patience but I was just wondering what was your longest stretch with out catching a bass?

fishing user avatarBluebasser86 reply :

About a month 2 years ago when my son was born. Other than that I rarely go more than a week without catching a bass.

fishing user avatarYoTone reply :

sorry i meant the longest stretch of time of fishing of getting skunked.

like 5 times in a row and such.

fishing user avatarBluebasser86 reply :

Twice, maybe 3 times? Not more than once on full day trips though.

fishing user avatarHookdUP reply :

the last time I went for a full day of fishing and I was being serious and didn't catch one was March 3 2016... Water was 38 degrees in the first tournament of the year . No one caught a fish in any lake or the near by four that anyone heard of and there were three tournaments going on and all goodwinter anglers . If I get the feeling it's going to be a grinder I grab a jig and I grab a shakeyhead worm on light light line .

fishing user avatarEricTheAngler reply :

6-7 months. Its been one bass after that stretch...

fishing user avatarbuzzed bait reply :

in winter i just chalk it up to winter....  i may go 2 or 3 trips without, now granted i'm in a kayak and not running and gunning the whole lake.

this time of year, heading into spring, i'm pretty disappointed if i don't catch one each trip!

fishing user avatarJaderose reply :

Funny...this is how I figured out that I was actually getting better as a bass fisherman.  That I wasn't just blindly throwing stuff and hoping for the best anymore...when getting skunked became more of a rarity than not.  If I'm beating the banks for an hour I don't really care or even count that as getting skunked.  If I'm in my boat for the day, I can't remember the last time I got skunked.

This would be about right for me.  On a day with a tough bite, you can commonly go 2 or 3 hours without a bite.  If you stay a full day you give yourself more time to figure them out, or hit the bite window if there is only a short period of time when they are active.

fishing user avatarNitrofreak reply :

I hit a dry spell the last several outings on a lake that I normally do very well on, although I understand that I am focused on learning new techniques and such with baits I have never used before, I have convinced myself that I should expect 0 fish days while in this learning curve, I will say that it's very difficult not to pick up what I know works, the feedback and the lessons I'm learning though by far outweigh the goose eggs.

fishing user avatarBareHook reply :

30 years, got into ocean fishing, then married, and kids. Now kids are old enough for interest, 6 months ago started up again with the kids and going gang-buster.

fishing user avatarTeam9nine reply :

One day, and that usually only happens about once a year, and always when I'm relegated to the bank during weather extremes.

Ditto. I get some days that kick my butt -always extreme conditions, and I'm often relegated to the bank nowadays. Sometimes I choose those days, just to see if I can figure something out; Sometimes I have :) . This year I've already logged two skunkings. It happens, and it's a tough go, making us wonder just why it is we're out there.

I've come to throw a fly rod in the car on bright sunny days as the stream trout fishing can be a better option than those shallow sun bleached bass ponds.

fishing user avatarBassMaster17 reply :

2 days of fishing from dawn till dark, third day caught a nice 4lber to ease my pain.

fishing user avatarTurtle135 reply :

All of February 2015. 7 brutally cold fishing trips. The only thing I caught were two channel catfish and a mild case of frostbite. I was on a mission to catch a bass without resorting to a warm water discharge area. The mission failed.

fishing user avatarSteveo-1969 reply :

I fish a river all year long (it doesn't freeze over where I fish).  I've gone 3 months without a fish (ANY fish, not just bass), fishing every Saturday and Sunday for a minimum of 4 hours per outing.  Talk about beat me to death!  I don't have a boat and the water was too high to safely wade, so this was all from the bank.  Luckily that didn't happen this winter.  I still got skunked a bunch of times but managed to catch some fish all winter long.

fishing user avatarFelix77 reply :

Currently haven't caught one since last November.  Gotta get out and get me some. :P

fishing user avatarJoey Battipaglia reply :

the first 7 times i started swimbait fishing

fishing user avatarww2farmer reply :

I went from mid Nov. of 2015 to just this past Tuesday without catching one.....................of course I didn't fish one time during that stretch.

fishing user avatartrick worms reply :

First time inshore fishing by myself... 4 days in a row with nothing

fishing user avatarMosster47 reply :

I fished Clearlake in November for two full days and didn't catch one fish. I hooked one in the double digits on an S-Waver but it threw it on the first jump.

One of the top lakes in the world, lost what was easily my PB, and got skunked twice.

Yeah, pathetic.

fishing user avatarjuicebass reply :

It all depends on how long you can go out for, if I do 2hrs and don't catch one, well I didn't hit all spots or give it enough time.

I when out for 7 hrs in one day once last summer with 3 guys including myself and I was the only one who didn't catch. Missed a bunch of frog bites tho. But they just didn't want the frog that day.

Im always happy when I get that first one, and I'm like "okay I can go home happy now" and that fades after 30 minutes lol

fishing user avatarBankbeater reply :

Longest time without fishing is usually from sometime in November to sometime in March. Depends on the weather.

Longest time being skunked was three weeks.  That happened a couple years ago and I couldn't buy a bite.

fishing user avatarN Florida Mike reply :

I can't remember ever being skunked but once in a while.Never Twice in a row or more.I guess you'd have to consider some kind of minimum time limit on it.I fish in the lake in my back yard and cast at least a little nearly every day and don't always catch one and I've gone a few times out there in a row and not caught anything but I'm only talking about a short time period.

fishing user avatarMaxximus Redneckus reply :

2 days

fishing user avatarWbeadlescomb reply :

Dang I can't remember the last time I put the boat in and didn't atleast catch a fish. There are a few 2 or 3 fish days mixed in there. Usually if the bass are slow I can swap over to shooting docks for crappie and catch a bunch of crappie and a few decent bass. Dad caught a 4-14 lb bass a few days ago on 4lb test and a 1/32 ounce jig  while we were shooting docks. I'm glad I live in the alabama where it never gets too cold to fish

fishing user avatarLoochy88 reply :

I bankfish a local pond on my lunch break, and have gone 3 or 4 days with nothing at times.   Although these trips are only about an hour each...

fishing user avatarSlade House reply :

37 days straight (it was october -early november) when i first got my boat and first started fishing lake casitas.  I could slay the potomac river , lake anne, and most any other mid-atlantic pond or lake , but i'd never had this happen.  Worst yet, was i had a fish finder , i could see the d**n fish but i couldn't catch not a single one, and they're were lots.  around day 33 , i completly broke down , and on day 37 i caught a fish.

fishing user avatarSam reply :

From this past November, 2015 to March 18, 2016.

Put boat away; put tackle away; put maps away; put fishing away; and got ready for Thanksgiving and Christmas.

This past Friday I caught my first two bass from a client's pond while waiting for the meeting.

They were not big. The first one was a beautiful bright green fat dink and the second about a pound and a quarter.

Caught both on a spinnerbait. Missed a small one on a Zoom shaky head trick worm.

But they count! Now, waiting for the weather to warm up to hit the lakes, rivers and ponds.

From December of last year to today, got 3 bass on a rattle trap, love that bait

fishing user avatarYoTone reply :

wow sorry i asked  some of you  to relive some of these experiences.

some are pretty torturous, especially the ones with boats.

fishing user avatarscaleface reply :

Probably about 8 hours . I cant remember the last time I went for a day of fishing and been skunked .

fishing user avatarWIGuide reply :

A few years ago I managed to start out our fishing season with 4 straight goose eggs. Granted 3 of those trips were on a flooding section of the Mississippi which I wasn't familiar with, but prior to that it had been 4 years or so since my previous skunking and 7 years before that.

fishing user avatarFish the Mitt reply :

Last year (Spring 2015) I went about a month (equal to about 7 trips out) and couldn't catch a thing. Just got done with back to back wrist/hand surgeries and was in a cast and couldn't get anything right. Timing, finesse movement, rod grip, tip angle, etc.. I tried but came up empty time after time even though my fishing partner was catching fish.

In the end, after getting my cast off and getting back into the rhythm of things, I learned a valuable lesson on just how important certain aspects are in fishing. Things seasoned anglers almost take for granted. The specific way we hold the rod, angle of rod tip, grip, finesse in our movement, hook-set reaction, etc... Essentially, you can have the right lure and be in the right spot, but if you can't fish it, ya can't fish it.

Humbling and valuable experience. Terrible at the time though!

The streak continues today.  Just sayin...

fishing user avatarBassThumb reply :

I'd say about 12-14 hours spread across 3 trips. Happened last summer during the dog days of summer. I caught a bunch of northern pike during those trips, but I couldn't find any biting bass no matter where I looked. I had to resort to fishing Senkos to break my fishless streak, and I can't stand fishing those things!

fishing user avatartbone1993 reply :

Got skunked my last 3 times out. Have only gone to my local pond and the water levels and temp have been unstable. Every day I have off seems to be during or just after a front passes.

fishing user avatarfishingfan25 reply :

Very late to this topic but i went 7 trips in a row this past winter without fish

fishing user avatarMickD reply :

I went to a Canadian lake that I had fished for many years.  The last year I went I fished the whole week without catching a single keeper walleye.  I watched a good number of fish being caught, but I totally struck out on a familiar lake that I normally did well on.  It can happen.

fishing user avatarwnspain reply :

Went one December, January, And February without a tight line. Granted I only went for 1 - 3 hours at a time and only about twice a month.

fishing user avatarIndianaFinesse reply :

I don't remember the last time I got completely skunked.  Whenever there is any threat of a skunk, and often before that:), I just pick up the Ned rig.  And on the rare occasion that the Ned rig strikes out, I just switch to crappie or white bass and clean up on them.

fishing user avatarRatherbfishing reply :

Rarely do I get COMPLETELY skunked but that is because I hedge my bets.  I don't USUALLY fish before the water has had a chance to warm up.  I did get skunked 3 weeks ago but I knew better than to go out then.  I just HAD to, though.

fishing user avatarFurther North reply :

1988 to 2006.  I gave up fishing when my Dad passed away, didn't get back to it until my daughter asked to try it.

fishing user avatarfrogflogger reply :

fishing specifically for big fish (really big fish) gives me many opportunities to get skunked.

fishing user avatarTxHawgs reply :

Wow I feel bad for someone going 6-7 months without catching a fish. That beats your confidence down and just makes it harder and harder to catch them. The post was how many times did u fish and get skunked, not I didn't catch any for x amount of time cuz I wasn't fishing? And for the guys that go one day all yr without getting skunked why aren't you fishing the pro tour? Hell and I thought I was a better than average angler ?

I garruntee that most of the people not ever getting skunked use the ned rig, and owe are fishing streaks to it.

I just bought Ned rig components yesterday lol, no more goose eggs for me!

I know you will love them, there's no such thing as a more fun lure to use than the Ned rig, just from the numbers of fish.  Once you figure it out it's not uncommon to catch upwards of fifty fish. Let us know how they work out for you and if you have any questions about it.

fishing user avatarEvan K reply :

When I was a youngster in the Pine Barrens of New Jersey I fished a local creek very regularly. It was about a mile walk from our place and had been stocked with trout. I was 10 and didn't know a thing about fishing but was very dedicated. I fished that creek probably at least once a week for a full year before I caught my first fish, a small bluegill. :) We started catching them more regularly after that.

fishing user avatarwarrior1 reply :

my last three club tournaments have been terrible.  In-between practice days have been better, so the tourneys have been very frustrating.

fishing user avatarNeil McCauley reply :

Did 2 back to back full day trips last April and got skunked. ~8 hrs each straight with no catch, it was like the lake had no fish. Think the water was just too cold and I had never fished cold water. Was very discouraged, but then 2 weeks later I couldn't keep them off my line.

fishing user avatarPineappleWater reply :

4 or 5 times in a month. I could say it may be the weather in July and fishing on the shore at around noon but it might sound like an excuse lol.
