Some of you guys may be burnt out on this topic.I have decided to have a little fun with it.Some of you have read this on the other post.I started it on a new one.
I talked with my one of my tournament partners this morning about his day on the lake yesterday. He fished from 9:00am-4:00pm.He caught 4 keepers, the biggest being over 4 lbs. and the smallest being 2 1/2 lbs.It was a tight pattern. He caught only largemouth.
The conditions:
Water temp:48-52 degrees
Water elevation:Winter pool
Water clarity:clear at 4 ft. on the east side slightly stained on the westside(2 ft. visibility)
Water release:27,000 cubic ft/second(that's not much)
Wind:NE at 5-10
Air temp:34-52 degrees
Mostly cloudy w/intervals of sun around noon
Barometric pressure:around 30 and steady
The Lake:
160,300 acres
River chain resevoir
The bottom is chunk rock, pea gravel, sand, some hard clay and mud.
Here's the challenge.I have 5 question to ask about his pattern.Whoever answers all 5 correctly 1st wins a custom paint crankbait or hard jerk bait(painted however you want on whatever brand lure you want not to exceed $8) or I'll give them 5 custom light wire jigs(green pumkin, brown,or black and blue)or 5 packs of Gamakatsu,Howner,or X-point worm hooks(3/0 or 4/0).
1.What type of lure did he catch his fish on?
2.What type of presentation?
3.What was the water depth?(within 2 ft)
4.What was the location of the fish?(example:main lake point, shallows, rocky banks)
5.What cover or structure were the fish relating to?
Then tell what you are basing your answer on:science, instinct,or both.
Number each answer to match the question.
Thanks to anybody who participates!
I'll take a shot for the heck of it
1. crankbait
2. deflecting off of cover

I deleted my other post, so I may have changed my mind.
1. 3/8 oz. pumpkinseed colored skirted jig w/ matching craw trailer.
2. Pitching
3. 3 feet
4. Cove in Northeast end of lake, near back of cove but close to deeper water (25'+/-)
5. Tight to wood cover
Based on water temp, barometric pressure, water color, time of year, personal experience. I think maybe a combination of both science and instinct. :
1. 5" Senko...and I'll say a darker colored one
2. Weightless
3. 10ft
4. Secondary Points
5. Chunk Rock with some sort of woody cover nearby.
And I'll say instinct.
Odds are infinitesimally small, but I'm a sucker for a challenge
1.What type of lure did he catch his fish on?
> Tube lure (almost put jig & trailer)
2.What type of presentation?
> Slow vertical delivery
3.What was the water depth?(within 2 ft)
> 10 feet
4.What was the location of the fish? (example:main lake point, shallows, rocky banks)
> Main river channel
5.What cover or structure were the fish relating to?
> The drop-off (rocks typically offer the best drop-off, but not always)
Both (science / instinct)
Roger
1. jerkbait
2.deadsticking
3.8 ft avg
4.points
5.drop/end of point
instinct

Is anybody getting close?
It wouldn't be fair to the guys who have already replied to give any hints.Nobody has got all 5 of them right yet though. Thanks to you guys who have replied! CJ

IMO this a great idea, prize or no. There are soooo many variables that could come into play on the water in the spring.
The only thing I can see that maybe should have been in the original post is general location of the body of water, like South, Central etc... I know that really makes a difference, for example, up here in the North the LM will be smoking as soon as the water gets into high 40'S where as they are still in shock when it's that cold further South.
Anywho, great idea CJ
suspending crankbait
crank down and pause for long periods
main lake point near channel
close to bottom 12foot
around rock
science
Since your in Kentucky, and I don't know when your fish starts to spawn, and not knowing what the lake temps have been the last couple of weeks, I had to base my choice of numerous possibilities, not knowing how the weather or sun is going to warm the water, or if that was the third good day of weather, post front or pre-frontal conditions, I used seasonal patterns and search baits, its my first time to fish this lake. At what times where the fish caught? Early morning, fish could have been deep, late afternoon, fish could be shallower!!!
There are a number of patterns used to find pre-staging fish. Best Guess,
1. Crankbaits
2. suspending
3. 12'
4. lake points close to the river channel
5. chunk rocks
seasonal patterns and science, I have no experience in the eastern hemisphere on climate and seasonal patterns(ie.... when fish spawn in Kentucky, or how cold it gets in the winter..... what is normal lake temps in the winter? is 48-52 degrees a warming trend, normal for this time of the year, colder than normal, warmer for this time of the year?????That is were experience is applied to the seesonal pattern, knowing what stage the fish are in and how far off spawn is. Do fish bed in Late march, April, May. Knowing how far off the spawn is lets us know where the fish should be. Are they a month from being on beds or two months?
1. Jerkbait
2. jerk, jerk pause - with extremely long pauses, that's win the fish bit.
3. 8 ft.
4. Main lake windy points.
5. Rock on sunny side.
This is based on me getting my butt handed to me this weekend with almost the exact conditions as you describe. I know this was the winning pattern at my tournament this past weekend. I knew to do this my problem was not letting the bait pause long enough. I know because I went out the next day and caught some doing the above.
1. 3/8oz Black n blue jig tipped with pork.
2. Slow roll the jig on bottom
3. 7 ft
4. Secondary points, on western side of lake.
5. Chunk or broken rock on secondary point.
I take it from the lack of any post saying "DING DING DING DING DING...WE HAVE A WINNER!! JOHNNY TELL THEM WHAT THEY'VE WON!!", that nobody has gotten this one right yet. I can't wait to see the answer just so I can see how wrong I was. ;D

You watch to many games shows, but nice come back. LOL thats funny.
1. Jerkbait
2. Long sweeps/ long pause
3. 5'
4. Primary points
5. Hard bottoms, rocky points
OH!
That's the What, How and Where of what I would have done.
Does that count?
If you got it right it does.
Nobody has gotten all 5 questions right yet. There have been some come close.I wish I could revise some things that have been pointed out to me on some of the post like Matt-Fly's.But if I did that it would give people who haven't answered yet,an unfair advantage. There are alot of possibilities here and I'm not saying some if not most of the posted answers would have been a working or better pattern.
So a percentage of getting all of the answers right will involve luck, but fishing involves luck, don't it?
I see that we are going to have to have some closure here.I want to give the answers.I am going to take a vote on a new forum on how this should end, there has to be a winner.I hope this thread has been interesting to you guys.I hope we learn something from it.Thanks Guys!
1.What type of lure did he catch his fish on? Senko
2.What type of presentation? Wacky Rigged

4.What was the location of the fish?(example:main lake point, shallows, rocky banks) Front half of coves
5.What cover or structure were the fish relating to? Transitions on chunk rock bank

4)cove/shallows/creek (all the same to me)
5) hard bottom (clay/mud)
both
For those who don't know,There is now a deadline on this challenge.Thursday 3/9 at 9:00pm cst.The member with the most answers right wins. CJ
I assuming since there wasn't a number set on the amount of guesses one could take that you get one shot, right? :
Well, Here it goes!
1. a Yamamoto DT Hula Grub in Green Pumpkin on a football head jighead 3/8-1/2 oz.
2. Dragging the Hula Grub on the bottom
3. 15 feet
4. NW Main Lake point fishing the Part of the point closest to the cove.
5. Targeting Tapering Clay points with Sparse Wood Cover
INSTINCT...... to survive those bass need to be feeding on any large crayfish that comes scuddling along that point
QuoteI assuming since there wasn't a number set on the amount of guesses one could take that you get one shot, right? :
Yes,that's right ,only one please.
1.) spinnerbait
2.) slow roll near bottom especially grass
3.) wind side of the lake
4.) 8' of water
5.) shallows near deeper water
6.) any cover in the windblown, 8' area near deep water.
Gotta go BOTH!
1.What type of lure did he catch his fish on? One with hooks? If he caught them, certainly he had hooks! Oh, you actually want a lure. Hmmmm, with the bass seemingly being in a pre-spawn mood, if the temps of the water are as you say, I would guess that he used a suspending jerkbait. It's a great all around lure for pre-spawn bass..........it will get a reaction strike from inactive bass, while it will also garner strikes from bass that are actively feeding, and wanting an easy meal.
2.What type of presentation? Um, a good one? He CAUGHT fish! It apparently was a good presentation! Errrr, again, you want a real answer. Well, you said that there was a form of current moving some water, albeit small. Any current will position bass in an ambush point, if they are actively seeking food. And since my guess is that he was using a jerkbait, I will say that he was fishing them above brushpiles. Certainly if they are a pre-spawn mode, they would be moving up into the shallows, but they would transistion in deeper water, waiting for the water to warm.
3.What was the water depth?(within 2 ft) Can't give a smart remark to this one..................so, I would guess that the water he was fishing was a transistion area between the main channel and a shallow spawning area. With that being said, the brush that he was fishing should have been sitting 6-8 ft. of water.
4.What was the location of the fish?(example:main lake point, shallows, rocky banks) Um, in the water, I would hope! I would believe that they would be on the down-current side of the brush, so that they could scoop up a free meal as it flowed by. Although you say the current wasn't that much, any moving water would bring bait to that area, looking for protection. As for the location, I answered it above, by saying that it is a transistion area between the main lake channel and shallow spawning flats.
5.What cover or structure were the fish relating to? Sunken brush in 6-8 ft. of water.
(1) suspending jerkbait
(2) slow pausing several seconds
(3) 10 ft
(4) Main lake points
(5) channel bends near main lake points
Instinct and personal experience.
1. a soft plastic like a brush hog
2. solw draging small hoping with 10-20 sec pauses after motion
3. 8ft
4. rocky banks
5. drop offs
So who won?
There is still 9 hours and 35 min. to go.I hope more members give this a shot.Come on guys and gals,it ain't gonna hurt you to give this thing a whirl!
So who is the winner??? :-?
