Favorite Bass Cover 2024

fishing user avatarARfishermen08 reply :

I was thinking today about all the types of cover bass hide under around here in eastern arkansas. My favorites are lilly pads, under brush piles or fallin trees and around cypres knobs.  I was wanderin what are some of your favorite types around here or even anywere in the country.

fishing user avataralltimefishingzack reply :

i live in texas and i think that my favorite cover to fish around is lilly pads also, and another cover i like is shallow stumps

fishing user avatarCrazedL.IFisherman reply :

For the most part i think many of us are going to agree regardless of location but as a new yawker id have to say first and foremost slop, absolutely love pulling bass out of the weeds, the more weedage as i like to call it the cooler the strike and explosion is, after that id say lily pads, fallen trees hanging in the water, and definitely stumps round it out for me

fishing user avatarRottManK9 reply :

I like fishing around the shoreline in cat tails and down trees and grass.

fishing user avatarLrgMouthCatcha reply :

I know many people don't like fishing it, but my favorite type of cover is bulkheads. I flip the worm, lizard, jig, or whatever ... on the bottom legde, wait a second then pull it off - looks more natural.  It's also quiter and I tend to catch lots of fish this way (just my .02)

fishing user avatareastkybass reply :

Here were I am at it is a lot of standing timber not my fav but I do see it alot.  I love to fish around docks and brush piles

fishing user avatarbass109 reply :

timber is my favorite, alot of sturcture is a must. just about anything will work.

fishing user avatarLow_Budget_Hooker reply :

Coontail, especially once the pods grow to the surface.

Our lake has a great amount of the stuff, finding the edges is like finding a pot of gold sometimes.

fishing user avatarCatt reply :

Hydrilla, coontail moss, milfoil ect

Grass = Bass  8-)

fishing user avatarRandall reply :

GRASS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Works year round and really helps the shallow bite during a hot summer day.

fishing user avatarguest reply :

Wow It depends on the lake or river. Boat Docks and Boat houses if they have them.Weeds and grass

Hydrilla and coontail my favorites. The edges between big rocks/boulders in at least 8 ft of water especially if they have weeds around them.Lilly Pads.Edges of standing reeds and what ever they call them ::)

fishing user avatarSPEEDBEAD. reply :

If you show me a brushpile, I will show you what a bass looks like....lol

fishing user avatarllPa1nll reply :

Boat Docks, Boat Docks, and Pontoon Boats. That the main cover on my home lake, considering its ringed with houses and cottages is boat docks and or man made structure.

fishing user avatargatrboy53 reply :

submerged grass on a point.topped out close to shore,3' underwater in 6' of water and 1' off bottom at tip of point in 8-12' of water.w/ a dock sittin in the middle of it

fishing user avatarRedlinerobert reply :

submerged trees, rockwalls, and matted grass -

fishing user avatarSiebert Outdoors reply :

I probably post something different to every one of these topics.  I guess it depends on my mood.  But today I'm going with beaver dams or laydowns.

fishing user avatar=Matt 5.0= reply :

<<<<<< Please refer to  my avatar  8-) I'm also partial to laydowns and boat docks.

fishing user avatarOther. reply :

I like fishing arround sumberged trees and stumps because its a small area to cover but multiple bass will just sit right next to it.

fishing user avatarNick B reply :

Lilly pads if they are present, the brush piles especially submerged and standing timber

fishing user avatarflippinout reply :

I like to fish hydrilla and coon tail when I go home to Texas but on Lakes Barkley and Kentucky, I fish the buck brush alot.  At least in the spring and early summer then try to find grass edges and riprap during the summer time.

fishing user avatarCJ reply :

Grass is good but I'm gonna say rockpiles or stumps in 10+ ft.That's where the bigguns' like to hang out around my house.

fishing user avatarBass Smacker reply :

I'd have to say rip rap banks and toolys. The ca delta is just miles and miles of it.

fishing user avatarrazyrsharpe reply :

i also have to say that lily pads are my favorite...there is nothing like dropping a senko or frog into the holes and watching that explosion!

fishing user avatarRoLo reply :

My favorite bass cover by far is "weeds", and I'm not talking about grass, I'm talking about WEEDS,

complex vegetation that resembles an underwater forest of trees.

To be precise, my favorite bass cover is "Pondweed" (Potamogeton), a large family of weeds found from Florida to Canada.

In the north, the most desirable pondweed is "broadleaf pondweed" (Potamogeton amplifolius) locally called CABBAGE.

In the south, one of the most desirable varieties of pondweed is "Illinois Pondweed" (Potamogeton illinoensis),

for which the local moniker is PEPPERGRASS.

When a bass learns of the whereabouts of a lush bed of pondweed, he'll leave the ole stumpfield like he's late for dinner :D

Other great submergent weeds are hydrilla, cabomba, coontail, eelgrass and milfoil.

fishing user avatarAlpster reply :

Flooded timber, lilly pads and thick brush & weeds. Every cast should catch a fish or snag my lure.

Ronnie

fishing user avatarKy_Lake_Dude reply :

Any kind of wood.

fishing user avatarValascus reply :

For me, the type of cover is not as important as what is close to the cover. I'll fish ANY type of cover I can find, but I like the cover to have deeper water close by. I believe that cover that has deeper water for a fish to retreat to nearby is much more likely to hold fish. Most of the cover I fish in this area is wood(stumps and laydowns), weeds(emergent and submerged), and chunk rock. Those are the most common, though, like I said, I'll fish ANY TYPE I can get a lure to.

fishing user avatarRattlinrogue reply :

I prefer thick grass in stump filled flats.Second would be laydowns where I like to throw spinnerbaits and pitch jigs/plastics.

fishing user avatarChris reply :

I like to fish beaver huts.

fishing user avatarbocabasser reply :

without a doubt lillies. however, i always look for 3 types of vegetation together. ie-lillies, hydrilla, and coon tails.

fishing user avatarroadwarrior reply :

Partially submerged grass lines along what is sometimes the bank of feeder creeks. These usually define deeper water adjacent to the grass as well as a path to even deeper water in the lake or river. Fish are not always on this cover/ structure, but they are ALWAYS near it at sometime duing the day. The only 10 lb bass I have caught on "big water," was associated with this type of scenario.

fishing user avatarguest reply :

Heres Mine Im under it right no  OH OH MISUNDERSTOOD THE QUESTION AGAIN

fishing user avatarBass Smacker reply :

Under of the cover of my live well

fishing user avatarslow_n_easy reply :

hello all, I'm new to your board. I'm from south fla.

First thing in the morning I prefer working a white/chart spinnerbait in hydrilla close to shore/ boat docks. close to noon, I'll head for 6' water in hydrilla working the same spinnerbait or junebug senko til 2:00 then I'll start flipping heavy cover near channels/ canal entering the main lake.

Actually it depends on which lake I'm fishing but at norm I'll try and fish the same cover. maybe my presentation may differ  but I focus on my prime spot between 11:00 - 2:00. 80% of my bigger fish are caught between those times

If ya aint snaggin you aint baggin.

fishing user avatarclipper reply :

In the lake I fish you have to make your own cover.  Christmas trees, rock piles, brush piles, etc.  I've even seen a couch(I didn't put it there), cover made from corrugated 4" drain pipe, and car parts :-/.

fishing user avatarBass Smacker reply :

We get a lot of junk in the delta......  I cought 4 bass off a lazy boy some one dumped in the water.

Old boats and stolen cars are good too ;).

fishing user avatarroadwarrior reply :

slow_n_easy,

Welcome aboard!

BTW, Most big bass are caught in the middle of the day. My "zone' is about 10:00AM to 3:00 PM, Fish_Chris (big Cali bass fisherman) likes EXACTLY 11:30! Doug Hannon also mentioned mid-day in his article today. I think you will like your new fishing "home."

fishing user avatar6.5pounder reply :

I live in Virginia and I think the best cover is stumps 5 to 10 feet deep, rocks, and docks.

fishing user avatarBankbeater reply :

Timber with hydrilla growing around it.

fishing user avatarsenko_77 reply :

Definately grass, but stumps in deep water are awesome to.

fishing user avatarShakes reply :

Lilly Pads!

fishing user avatarBassBeat101 reply :

I like stickups, tall solid vegetation, and cattails - there's just something about reeling my spinnerbait past some sticks and seeing my line plow through the water sideways - it's an awesome feeling.

Daryl

fishing user avatarbass109 reply :

The flats :)

fishing user avatarmack s. reply :

i like fishing weeds with t-rigged worms but i also love fishing spinnerbaits along submerged logs..what i really want to do learn to perfect this season is bouncing crankbaits off of standing timber.

fishing user avatarOBX-BASS reply :

i love to fish anything that bass hang around and in!! haha but one of my favs if lilly pads! theres nothing like bringing a horny toad across the tops of some pads and watchin them all out EXPLODE on the toad!!!! cant get enough of doin' that....

fishing user avatarLucky Craft Man reply :

SLOP, SLOP, SLOP, and more SLOP.  There is nothing better then fishing thick mats of slop and have those bass blow up on that frog from below.  Then you end up winding in 20 lbs. of junk where you anxiously dig through to see how big your catch is.  I can't wait for the summer slop.

fishing user avatarSPEEDBEAD. reply :

Now the flats....

Which one is it hoss?

fishing user avatarhi_steel_basser reply :

I like laydowns and brushpiles. There isn't much vegeation on the lakes I fish.

fishing user avatarMakhuluBass reply :

I fish a slow moving river with stained to muddy water. The river has an abundance of all types of cover, lilly pads, water hycinth, rip rap, submerged and semi submerged timber, boat docks, slipways and plenty of reeds.

What I can never figure out though, is which type of structure is "on" that hour, day, week, month or year and spend a lot of time each session just trying to figure out where they are.

My favourite structure is trees and enjoy either bouncing a crank, or flipping a T-rigged creature bait.

fishing user avatarLil Baby Cousin Ray-Ray reply :

I seem to have a lot of luck where willows or other treeshave leaned over and dipped into the water creating shade. Especially in the summer.

fishing user avatarFish Man reply :

i live in southern delaware ( states to small for that to matter ) and i prefer around trees and reeds

fishing user avatarSinjin Kim reply :

Any cover, lol. Most of the lakes in my area (Southern California) looks like a big bath tub.

fishing user avatarsilvercliff_46 reply :

Reeds/rice/bullrushes, slop, wood, docks, rocks depends on sun/wind/ what I feel like fishing. :-/

fishing user avatarMALTESE FALCON reply :

I'm like RoLo, I like the weeds. Lake St. Clair is like one big weedbed, Cabbage and all the others (I can't remember all their names).

Falcon

fishing user avatarG3-Basser reply :

Weeds....any kind, but lilly pads are my favorite. Horny toads and floating worms over the thick stuff. Spinnerbaits or texas rigged worms through the thin stuff. Occasionally flipping holes with jigs or pegged tubes. Fun stuff.
