What are your goals for the winter and how do you plan to set about attaining them?
I have three.
1. Learn to walk a bait with a casting rod consistently.
2. Acquire more of the baits I like and prefer to use...ie:Zip'n Ziggy, Fakie Dog, etc.
3. Read 6 new books about river and creek fishing for bass of all species, but primarily smallies.
Fish more...work less! ????
My goal is to catch bass in every month. Fished all winter with a few interruptions this past year. Dec. is my only possible obstacle coming up if we have a hard winter. I'm in IN and winters can be anything from light jacket weather to minus teens and thick ice.
Catch a bunch of Crappie with the occasional big Bass out of brushpiles and standing timber. Bundled up with some hot coffee I don't mind it until it gets below freezing. At that point, I turn in my man card and watch Football or movies...lol
I will try to trout fish some near home from Thanksgiving until the water gets hard.
My trailer bunks are not an issue but I’m gonna make up a new set along with my side guides and pop them on the first nice day in the spring. I’ll have all winter to find that ultimate piece of carpet to do it with.
I might want to install a some type of a GobeBe spotlight. Not sure if I want to do it on the bow or near steering. Tired of doing the hand held spotlight thing which has been going on for the last 40 years. But it’s not like I’m using a spotlight all that much.
Slap you for even bringing up the thought of that horrible word!!!????

I'd love winter if it stayed above 40...

Survive it ~
Huddle up & Dress warm.
A-Jay
1. Learn to wire tire jig skirts.
2. Reorganize my tackle/garage.
3. Hope that my less than 2 year old son learns to shovel the snow from the driveway.

90 Percent of winter days are above 40 at my house! It's wonderful
To not put the 15 lbs I just lost back on...
Fishing wise, get all my usual winter tasks like cleaning reels done BEFORE the ice thaws. Work got in the way last year and set me back on some tasks for Spring. Also need to clean up my kayak fish finder wiring/ battery box set up.

Do you have to catch them in Indiana for it to count.
6 lb smallmouth

Yep. Wouldn't be a challenge otherwise.
Catch a 5 lb bass through the ice.
Tie a whole bunch of flies.
Don't have a heart attack while scooping snow.
Stay warm
Don't injure myself shoveling snow
Couple more mods to the canoe
Clean the reels.
Restock baits that I'm low on.
Clean up the baits I've found.
Goals for the Winter
1. Stay warm.
2. Watch football.
3. Watch fishing shows on TV.
4. Organize tackle.
5. Clean rods and reels.

My football teams seasons are always over well before winter begins
I live in Maine. Ice on the lake I live on gets 3-4 ft thick. I don't ice fish. Something about pulling a fish up through a hole in the ice on a string at 0 degrees. Not for me. Anyway...I do have a nice woodworking shop that's heated.
To NOT spend as much money on fishing as I did last winter.
Catch a DD on a swimbait.
I only have one goal for the winter; Live long enough to see the spring. My plan is to stay away from visits to the hospital, or my heart doctor. I figure, if I can avoid those I have a pretty good chance of reaching that goal.
Hoping to survive knee surgeries and be back in good enough shape to be able to fish next spring.
With out a doubt I am with Catt on this one but with a small change. I do not work anymore as I am retired And expect my cardiologist give me the ok to get back in the boat next week.
Fish as long as there isn’t ice on the water.
where i'm at we get some cold snaps ... but most of the time fishing can be done year-round ...
the state record of 18lbs. plus was caught in december ... in 3ft. of water on a rattlin' rogue in a jon boat ... natchez state park ...
i'll be fishing in december and january ... using a jerkbait and plastic worm ...
good fishing ...

Been retired for 10 yrs but I'm always working on something for somebody.
My goal this winter is to throw a 68Special all the time and see if I can shake a larger-then-average bass out of my local ponds. I tried it last year but the rod I was using provided so little feedback that it was hard to both ensure that I was creeping it slowly along the bottom and keeping me engaged enough to even be able to react to the few bumps/hits that I did manage to get. I have a much more sensitive rod now and I think I have finally gotten my glove game figured to the point where I can spend couple hours at it in reasonably good comfort.

Good luck. Hope all goes well
I plan on catching some crappies for the freezer, maybe fish for some stocked trout with my wife too.She usually outfishes me on the stocked trout. Also, my son in law has a couple of beagles that are ready now, so may do a little rabbit hunting. Havnt hunted rabbits for many years, so it might be fun. Aside from that, stay warm and fish for bass untill the lakes freeze over

Catt, I'm not retired yet, but I know how this goes. Once people realize you know how to fix things, it goes on and on. Garbage disposals, hot water tanks, cars, carpentry, the list keeps getting longer.

I watched him make the Roman glide bait the other day, (for the 10th or 20th time) he is really good. I now know why those baits cost so much, he puts a lot of time and detail into making those baits. Good luck on yours @DanielG.

This.
And then not fall through the ice when ice fishing.
1. Kill a 140" deer
2. Catch a DD bass
3. Try not to put on my winter weight lol
8+lb largemouth, same goal as every winter.

Pretty much the only option unless we have a mild winter.

Well, if you need company, let me know.
1. Sell my yak, get a 14 -16 foot aluminum boat and do a bass boat conversion.
2. Make some baits. I've made a popper and a super spook.
3. Fish as often as I do the rest of the year.

I'll be honest. In winter, I normally work 6 days a week most weeks. We are scheduled 4 10s, so 6 10s offers lots of mess around dough, but then again, Ichiban Tackle loves me in winter.
1. Catch a couple new species of fish for my fish lifelist.
2. Anything else is a bonus.
Wait for climate change to prevent winter altogether so I can keep fishing.
I'm retiring on 12/20/19. One of my sons owns a house on Six Mile Creek at Toledo Bend and I'll be spending a lot more time up there from January through May. When not up there I'm sure I'll be fishing around home (South Louisiana) also.
Thank goodness my wife loves to fish. She's actually pretty good with a baitcaster so I'm sure she will be along for the ride also.

I'm eyeing some of the more obscure topwater baits they still have.

Congrats on your retirement!
Semi retired now. But with 6 of 8 kids still at home I'll never fully retire.....never..
I caught an 8lb 3oz bass this Feb. Goal this winter is to reach double digits. Never done that before. I really feel it'll be February before I have that chance this winter as well. But I will be increasing my chances as often as I can. With temps in the upper 90's nearly all of September winter still seems SO far away..... However, before you know it we'll be reading @A-Jay Annual Ice-Out Thread.....

Bite your tongue!
I want open water year round - though like you I live in the wrong part of the country for that.

I’ll keep some open water year round fish pics posted up for you this year to make you feel a little warmer! Actually for some reason I have the desire to ice fish, but I’m a bit of a scaredy-cat about walking on a frozen lake.

Northern MN - Lake Bemidji - Once the University grounds-crew finished plowing parking lots they'd plow an area of the frozen lake behind the Student Union. We gained a couple hundred parking slots in the winter...ya, the ice was that thick.
My plan for this winter is to stay where it is warm and wait for the spring spawn.
Catch 400 LM vertical spoon fishing.
Ice fish as much as possible
Clean and re-lube all my reels
I'm either deer hunting or cutting wood......but with an eye on spring bass fishing. Lol
Finally get my rod arsenal up to 5 baitcasters and upgrade my finesse rod, also start saving up for a boat so next summer I won't be limited to bank fishing.

Wood for yourself or do you sell it? I love chopping wood, especially red oak

For myself, I have an outside wood boiler and burn about 8 cords per year.
Yes Red oak is easy stuff to work with.
Wow... tons. More than I can actually get to.
Reel maintenance, tweak some heavy cover rigs, and lures.
But first I have to replace the impeller on my well pump, upgrade the hot water heater, clean out my pressure tank, and... re-plumb the works while I'm at it. Among other such things...
For me, same as it is year around, to catch a DD bass..But here's the catch, it will come out of a public park lake/pond..
I've come close, hopefully this is the year it happens.
Besides fishing everyday I have to chase the deer out of my wife's garden.
I see some very nice goals.
Winter? Heat index was still 105 here today lol
