Bass Pro Shops Exploring Bid For Cabela's 2024

fishing user avatarGlenn reply :

Breaking news!

What are your thoughts?

fishing user avatarA-Jay reply :

Personnaly - I'm not a fan.

I believe Competition is good and Monopolies are bad.

A-Jay

fishing user avatarChris at Tech reply :

Boo.  That is all.

fishing user avatarDarren. reply :

Yeah, not really a fan of this.

Prefer competition, as well.

fishing user avatarthebillsman reply :

That's sad. My cabelas is so much nicer than my BPS.

fishing user avatarHi Salenity reply :

Wow,

fishing user avatarTurkey sandwich reply :

I don't like it. Taking away competition is bad. Also, from my experience, Cabelas have been much, much nicer stores.

fishing user avatarslonezp reply :

I have a Cabelas 10 minutes away and 2 BPS's within an hours drive. I don't shop a whole lot at either store. Just for fishing licenses, rods, and last minute fishing/boating "emergencies". Seems both business models cater to the average fishermen and women, and all around outdoor enthusiasts of which, I am not. Sick minded individuals, like myself, prefer to shop online and buy in bulk.

fishing user avatarSenko lover reply :

I don't know who the mastermind is behind Tackle Warehouse, but he should be the one buying out Cabelas, not BPS.

You know....you can save some gas and buy your license online.

Agree on all other comments. I rarely go to either now. Buying online saves ALOT of cash.

fishing user avatarNorcalBassin reply :

Selfishly, I don't like it because I'd have to pay sales tax on anything I get from Cabelas online (if a store or distribution center for the company resides in CA we have to pay sales tax). The BPS I've been to (Manteca, Rancho, Vegas) were all nicer than the only Cabelas I've been in (Reno), but I've heard some of the stores you guys have in the Midwest and down south are much nicer than what we have out here.

fishing user avatarSki213 reply :

My initial thought is that I don't like this. I don't like anything that reminds me of Walmart. This does. I don't have anything against BPS though. I've spent plenty of money with them. Cabelas doesn't have to sell. If they do its a business decision and its all about money. Nothing else. It's big business. I do hate to see companies that started as a dream absorbed by another's dream but it is what is.

Having said that everybody should keep in mind that BPS didn't start huge. It was a business that was grown from relatively little. This is one of the few places on earth that this is even possible. That's not all bad as I see it.

I prefer buying at smaller establishments simply because around me they are more involved locally and additionally they carry what works locally. May be more expensive but its a pretty minimal difference really. I also like the smaller Internet sellers cause even though its not local, it seems more personal. BPS has never told me whats hot at the next tournament spot. That counts for something in my opinion.

fishing user avatartomustang reply :

If cabs was smart they would buy Yamaha and academy sports, so they can get back in the game with boats/motors/wheeled vehicles and with housebrand items like academy tackle, but they wont, they'll just hire 400 more guys in the store to harass you to get their credit card in every aisle

fishing user avatarHoosierHawgs reply :

I like BPS but I hate the idea. Reason being is when Dick's bought Galyan's. That was enough to put a bad taste in my mouth when it comes businesses acquiring other business

fishing user avatarJosh Smith reply :

I think it would help get one or the other within reasonable driving distance from me.

Otherwise, too Walmart-ish, so I'm a bit torn.

Josh

fishing user avatarjbw252 reply :

I'm not in favor of this.  I doubt it'll happen anyway.  It takes a lot of swagger to pull off big buyouts like that.

fishing user avatarScarborough817 reply :

not a huge fan of this. My Cabela's had a selection of smaller brands that my BPS doesn't carry they also have a lot more swimbaits than BPS does.

If you do that here, the state charges you a $3 fee for the "convenience" of buying it online. But I pay it because I value my time more than a few bucks. Plus, you're guaranteed not to have to drive, waste gas, then learn the computers are down and you can't buy one anyway.

fishing user avatarscbassin reply :

This is probley why BPS has put the store on hold that they were going to build in North Charleston SC. Cabela's has plans to build one just up the road in Summerville. I don't buy from either one anymore for we have a excellent tackle shop at the military rec area at short stay in Moncks Corner SC. & if they don't have it T/W does. I am not so sure it will hurt the avid much as my guess is that they are aware of all the on line stores  I am also surprised that BPS is even looking at this unless it's a real bargain  The economy is not as good as the gov. would like you to believe just look at the wages. Prices are going up but wages not so much & if this keeps happening people will have to cut back spending & non essential things go first. & I am sure that is looked at.  . .

fishing user avatarbuzzed bait reply :

meh, rarely shop at either anyways (usually with a gift card someone gives me or something)

prefer DSG for the brick and mortar and do most shopping online....

Same here. but I do it because I can print off multiple copies and put one in my tackle bag, the boat, my wallet, and anywhere else just in case i forget it.

Cabela's has its own style and history and I like the store/company.

I completely agree A Jay.

It would be great if we all had a solid bass fishermen tackle shop within 100 miles of us. I say that because there isn't much at BP or Cabela's near me that I'm interested in buying.

Is Cabela's losing money? Why are they considering selling out?

fishing user avatarBig C reply :

I don't really have a dog in this fight.  I rarely buy fishing related items from Bass pro.  I think they are better for killing time on rainey days, coffee mugs, and Red Head Camo Mocs.   TW is the bee's knees.

fishing user avatardam0007 reply :

They're opening the first BPS here in CT and I would rather drive 1.5hours to Cabelas than spend a $0.01 in BPS. As far as I'm concerned BPS can go belly up for their anti-2A stance locally.

fishing user avatarAlonerankin2 reply :

I like to look at the taxidermy, other than that, they both are ridiculous on pricing.. If it happens, it's bad for consumers like A-Jay alluded to.

fishing user avatarscaleface reply :

I spend a lot more time walking around Cabelas than Bass Pro , even though I dont buy much from either .

fishing user avatarKidflex reply :

Bass pro will ruin cabelas.

fishing user avatarRAMBLER reply :

I really don't care.  Neither one has a store close enough to me to make the trip worth while.  I save a lot of money buying on line versus gas for the trip.  But, I do believe that for the customer, competition is a good thing.

You have a new BPS in San Jose, opened a week ago.

fishing user avatarbigbill reply :

Watch the cabelas stock if the merge takes place the cabelas stock may go sky high. I've done some day trading like this before.

Once BPS buys Cabelas the cabelas stock value will match the higher bps stock.

It's a gamble.

fishing user avatargardnerjigman reply :

Don't really see what it matters anyways. Around here they aren't diverse at all.... same store, same products, different name. One usually had a more knowledgeable staff is about the only difference.

fishing user avatarBaitMonkey1984 reply :

I am not a fan of this either. First, like many of the above posted I don't like when a company in a field buys up all the other competitors. I do not want to be surrounded by 3 BPS which all carry the same gear. I have 2 BPS nearby and they are slightly different. However, the Cabelas that just opened up in Hudson, MA is drastically different and both suit different needs. BPS is my go to for bass fishing. However, Cabelas has some brands I can't find at BPS. But for hunting, camping, hiking etc I prefer Cabelas 10 to 1 over BPS. Variety is the spice of the life.

Can't imagine that Dick Cabela would have ever thought his business would be sold to BPS.

fishing user avatarbigbill reply :

White Consolidated owns most of the refrigerator brands.

Husqvarna owns Johnsered, poluan, Pioneer, partner, chainsaws.

fishing user avatarboostr reply :

I have neither around me, so I don't care. I don't even buy to much from them online. i usually hit up Dick's the town over, or hit up Gander, another site, or TW on the interwebs. I just found a nice mom and pops place 30 min from the house that has a real nice selection of equipment and baits that I cant get at Dicks so they will be getting my cash also if I don't want to pay or wait for shipping.

BPS is a privately held company and doesn't have public stock available for trading.

There is no parent company for BPS.  Johnny Morris, who started the company, is still the majority owner.

I'm a big Cabelas fan (and not so much of Bass Pro).  As far as who owns them, it doesn't matter to me, as long as they keep the way they are and don't switch to the Bass Pro model (i.e., have crappy homes brand products and not really carry anything else)

You're likely going to get a quick increase if the purchase succeeds, but I wouldn't expect anything drastic.  Both are older, established retail chains.  It might be worth throwing some cash at, but I wouldn't stake a college fund on it or anything.

I read that article before snopes and figured it was fishy when you never have a real source.

fishing user avatarFrogFreak reply :

If I were a BPS marketing executive, I would be reading these posts with concern. It seems very few of us (myself included) buy from them. Maybe they don't care about the diehard bass anglers but they sure should.

I make my jigs and buy my components online. When it comes to hard baits and plastics, TW gets my business 9 times out of 10 and Academy gets some business from me as well. I live 5 minutes from a Cabelas but their selection is limited and overpriced.

fishing user avatarslonezp reply :

I was reminded today why I don't spend money at BPS. I have a $10 off coupon with no restrictions and a $10 off a $50 purchase online only. So I can get $50 worth of merchandise for $30 plus tax and shipping. I purchase a lot of stuff in bulk and was looking for a particular brand, size, and color of swimbait. BPS wants $7.49 a package and do not have the color I am looking for. The manufacturers website has them for $6.49 per package, and a certain warehouse that sells tackle has them for $5.99 per pack with the color in stock.

I'm curious, percentage wise, how much fishing tackle makes up their overall sales.

fishing user avatartimcauliffe reply :

fishing user avatarHoosierHawgs reply :

Same here. I'll be interested to see what happens, I thought it was nice and enjoyed the selection of both fishing and camping/apparel gear.

Listen to reason (can't help it)-BPS probably gets more non-fishermen/hunters through their doors than Cabela's. Fifty dollar pink camo sweatshirts that say Cabela's fly off the shelves, while folks like us deliberate over which new reel to buy for months.

I don't see BPS closing any Cabela's-the brand recognition is too strong.

It is crazy that they routinely sell "competitor" brands for above retail. I just figure it's a way to push novice anglers (in the sense of the tackle they like) to the BPS brand since that's obviously their biggest profit margin.

Btw... I was just able to use that coupon on some 22LR ammo plus free shipping. I had a momentary window of satisfaction with BPS  :D

fishing user avatar5 Dollar Fishing Game reply :

Here in North Carolina I am 20 minutes from each one and both of them are about a-year-old.

I do you have a little bit of bias for bass pro being that I am the local pro.

However the staff and the atmosphere however the staff and the atmosphere at Cabela's is not the best.

As for the big buy, I'm kinda torn. It can be good if it helps BPS profit and boosts revenue. However potentially bad if it becomes a huge monopoly issue.

fishing user avatarthebillsman reply :

All of my local tackle shops are more expensive than both Cabela's and BassPro. I'm more than happy to cover the small percentage to aid a local business but I do love making trips out to Cabela's. It makes me feel like a tourist.

I have slowly faded away from BPS since they are fading out name brand (in my store less than a 5 minute drive) and pushing BPS brand more and more on people. I wish the Cabelas wasn't over an hour away.

fishing user avatarOhio Archer reply :

Most of the stuff I would buy at Cabelas is Cabelas branded...arrows, rods, etc.  BPS carries multiple arrow brands and multiple rod brands.  Granted, our Cabelas store is half the size of the Wheeling WV store, one floor, so not everything can be carried.  The BPS is two levels so more space to carry more products.

fishing user avatarAQUA VELVA reply :

I buy clothing from Cabela's and most of my fishing gear from BPS. Both have been good for me through the years.
