This is a very unscientific study that I have done so far, and will continue to do from now on out. It has been brought up on the boards frequently lately, so I decided to let everyone in on the info. Plus I was called out.
So far, of the groups I have taken down to Baccarac, we have fished a total of 285 hours.
90 of those hours were fished in July
195 of those hours were fished in March
in 285 hours 7 DD bass have been caught, weighed, pictured and released. They range from 10lbs 2oz - 10lbs 14 oz.
That equated to 1 DD bass in every 40.7 hours, or 1 DD bass every 4.07 days(10hr fishing day)
Of these bass, 3 were caught on a crank bait, 2 were caught on a spinner bait and 1 was caught on a scrounger jig and 1 on a swimbait
In the next coming weeks, I will be joining another group at Lake Baccarac and together we will spend another 135 hours on the water. I will update this post when we return.
If you need any info on the best lake in the world right now to catch a DD bass, shoot me a pm and I will be more than happy to help you book the trip of a lifetime!

must be tough catching a DD every 40 hrs (standard work week)
how about some overtime????????????
I wonder how much those odds would go up if you were chucking an 8" hudd or a 9.5" baitsmith mag trout.

All 7 over 10lbs......
Baccarac was stocked with FLMB that should be 12lbs+ before the bass considered a trophy.
Zero 12 lb + bass caught so far!
I can hear the profanity as I write this so settle down and listen.
A freind of mine guided at El Sato and was surprised that the local guides all fished the shore line cover, not one fished the outside structure like humps! So Don being a structure fisherman started to survey the underwater islands (humps) and caught hundreds od DD bass that were unfished. The hot ticket was deep swimbaits, the El Sato bass had never seen them before.......hint!
Tom
The fact still stands. 7 DD fish in 285 hours. Simply the best chance at a DD in the world right now. And without a doubt the best shot at a 12lb + as well. Many caught each year. Several over 15 this year alone.

Come on Tom ~ Really ? A 10lb bass isn't a Trophy ?
You're just poking the bear now.
A-Jay
Definitely a 10 lb is a trophy NLMB, 12+ lb is In- Fisherman for regions with FLMB, my personal standard is 15 lbs! Love to go to Baccarac and put a 15+ in boat....enjoy tis window of opportunity, it will not last long!
Tom
Northern strain - Florida strain - All I've ever fished for is the northern strain so a Bass is a bass to me.
10, 12 & 15+ - when I'm using these numbers for bass I'm often talking Inches not pounds !
So for me these are the bass dreams are made of.
- Come with us Tom -
I'd be happy to snap a few shots of your new PB for you - as long as you're willing to return the favor.
A-Jay
Can't wait to see the pics and here the trip report.
Any bass in the double digit range is plenty good in my book, whether it is Florida strain, Northern strain or a mix of the two.
I am looking forward to scheduling some sort of trip i nteh future but i will be throwing the fly rod exclusively
I would guess you have a good shot at going after the world record on teh long rod too since it is around 16lbs.....talkl about a thrill
well............
Beating the banks and catching 10s seems pretty strong to me.

Only place I've ever fished where one cast yields a 2-4lb bass and the very next cast, in that same spot gives up a "Grande".
Once I figured this out, every single strike and hook set was a Heart Stopper.
Really very intense and definitely keeps you on your toes.

Tom my current In-Fisherman Master Angler program lists 6.5lbs for all regions except region 2 (texas to florida & southern states) and * California & Mexican largemouth bass must be 10lbs or 24" as excluded from region 3 (western states).
That said I personally consider a DD largemouth at 10lbs to be the equilvent of a 6lb smallmouth from the great lakes region. The In-Fisherman master angler program list 5.5lbs for regions 4 & 5 (Canada & great lakes & tributaries).
With those numbers, how could you not want to go
NUMBAS!!!!!!!!!
Yea man I remember seeing those HAWGS on older threads
Unless I miss read something mine says what Dwight's says!
I thought the title of the Topic was "Rate of Dd bass @ lake Baccarac,"
The "Dd' stands for Double Digit bass or a bass weighing @ least 10#!
So OOmod continue on! I'm listening

there is a thread where DD was talking about 12 lb bass and the In-Fisherman of my era, was 12 lbs for California and Floirda, Texas hasn't come of age back then and Mexico wasn't on their map.
Good luck to all of you chasing DD bass wherever they may be located.

PS; Catt back Pack your bags, maybe we both can join them in 2014, I am retired then!
Picture of a Lake Baccarac food chain! Largemouth meets Tilapia! Yum!

I don't know where you were fishing but I never saw a fish under 4lbs on the end of my line at lake B.
I can't wait to go in 2014! My goal is a teenage bass in lbs. lofty I know, but never give up!
I'm looking for a teener as well!!!!!
Jeff
I'd be happy with anything bigger than my PB of 7lbs. To catch something almost double that is just mind blowing to me.

Although there weren't many - I tossed a few in the live well ~ "Lunchies" as Manual called them.
Funny - a 4lb Lunchie, they were tasty.
A-Jay
Just got back, and calculating the numbers now! We added another 135 hours on the lake, bringing the total number of hours up to 420 hours for this "scientific study" and while I know the results, I cannot post the new numbers until the official post has been made.
Jeff
All I know is that a DD Largemouth is a trophy even if it came from a Bass Pro Shops display tank. It is a great accomplishment and fish.
I can't wait to see the report from your trip!!!
With the total number of hours for my research now at 420 hours, the total number of bass caught over the magical 10lb mark is now at 10, for myself and people who have gone with me(not including the guides). This brings the rate to:
420 hours/10bass =
1 DD bass per every 42 hours fished!!!
Next scheduled trip down is in March and is filling fast! Already 8 people signed up! This should at least triple the total number of hours on the water, and gain even more valuable research data!
Jeff
I plan on doing my part ! Welcome home guys.
what is it with "guide fish" included.
to me, hours fished are hours fished no matter who is fishing them, along with DD caught.

I think you're right Brian, but these guys know this lake so well. By seeing and fishing it with the water down to 30 %, when it fills back up it's almost like cheating. They do not use any electronics and are constantly pointing out "The spot on the spot" even though it might be in 25 feet of water.
The guides fished off an on. Mostly after we had beat up a new spot and perhaps not met our potential (at least in their eyes) they would spray a few casts and show us that we'd missed a few. I learned a lot about angles and fighting / landing Big Bass.
Either way, when those fish are included, the hours fished per DD bass caught would go down accordingly.
A-Jay
true, you would not want to "skew" any results.
On 11/17/2013 at 6:07 AM, Brian Needham said:true, you would not want to "skew" any results.
It's all good - Admittedly this is the only trophy bass fishery I've ever visited.
So I can't tell you if this one is any better or worse than another.
But Lake Baccarac has been everything I had hoped for ~ twice.
A-Jay
Just hearing about your stories gets me all pumped up! 10+ Lb bass, or as Bob Lusk stated, "One in every 25 to 30 million bass!" Simply amazing guys!!!
How much does one of these trips cost? Or can anybody give me a link with the prices and details? sounds like fun

Yes Sir - get with BR member & moderator 00 mod (Jeff) he is the man who Dwight and I first hooked up with to go there.
I'll let him know you are interested.
Jeff will have the answers to your questions - also I think you find that these trips are worth every penny.

Was a fishing show on TV um some 10 years or longer ago. Thinking it was jimmy Houston. Caught about three 10 + In a row and said heck lets try for ten over 10+ in a row. And did it. Unless they edited out the small ones. Which I figured.
That's one place I'd love to go!
We talked to legendary guide Sixto the last night we were there. He told us a story about catching three 10lbers in under 15 minutes from the same spot. With his reputation I had no reason to doubt him.

I don't know if that is more amazing or humbling. for the fact here stateside we run around with our hummingbirds/lowrances and still stuggle on days.........while those guys are dink dropping 7#ers off a spot the size of a bathtub in 25fow.
love hearing the stories from trips like this.
I never got an email or Pm? my email is mattlures@yahoo.com please send info
Thanks
The time to catch DD bass from any trophy bass lake is during it's peak period. Anyone seriously interested in catching these special bass should contact Jeff and book a trip to Baccarac. Your odds are good, better if you focus your efforts on DD bass in lieu of catching those pesky 5 to 7 lber's.
Tom
PS, Matt are you attending the BAT this year?
The latest installment of Bass Resource members DD bass:
Dwight Hottle:(Welcome to the club sir)
A-Jay: (with his second Baccarac DD, and the biggest of BR members so far 11lb 11oz))
And myself: (5th)
I certainly look forward to updating this list at the end of March next year!

As promised, I'm back to update this thread. This last trip hurt the numbers of our "scientific study" as we hit the bass while they were spawning. While everyone caught fish in the 7-9lb+ range, there was only 1 DD caught on this trip. Anytime you were hung up close to the bank, you go get un-hung and see TONS of monsters up shallow, but getting them to bite is another story. So for the new numbers and averages:
1020 hours fished producing 11 DD bass - 1 DD Bass for every 92.73 hours fished.
As always, I will continue to keep this thread updated with our true statistics. I still say this is the best fishery for a DD bass anywhere in the world right now. If you are looking to make a trip down, contact me and I will be more than happy to help you with any or all of the details of your trip!

A 10# bass is ok but I personally have seen bigger swim by me. Again I lost two bigger bass too.
My point is to fish and fish hard. It's not easy but these dd bass are out there.

A 10# bass is more than ok, it's really fine fish. Unless a fish is landed it is very difficult to determine how big it was. The water clarity may not be ideal for a visual, even with in a designated species not all of the fish are going to fight the same.
I lost a fish last year, it was before dawn I did see it jump a few times and I knew it was a tarpon, but it was about 50 yds away. At first I thought the fish was maybe 75# which is quite possible. After losing it in heavy current the reality set it, I doubt it was near that big. Did make a nice Bullsheet story. I was telling people for weeks I had a 75 pounder on, lol.....I knew better.
Man a dd anywhere is a fish of a lifetime! Glad i,can here your guys stories , keeps me fishing for that hawg. When i get older im deff going on fishing trips where i can catch a 10 lb plus . Keep it up guys!
It' very difficult to catch big bed bass on artificial lures and a reason I don't target them. The big girls are very uncomfortable in shallow water during the day time. When they are up to spawn, not eat, it is frustrating!!
What type of lures did you try using?

Jimmy Houston caught I his first DD bass in candlewood lake in ct. He often visits relatives so he can fish too. The stumps in candlewood hold big DD bass.

I seen these bigger bass within a few feet from me at the drop off. The shore is three feet above the water. I can tell pretty close to the size of the fish I'm seeing. I'm saying bigger than 10# maybe a new state record of 12#14oz. Somewhere in that class. I didn't state 14#. But she's way bigger than my 10#er.
I'm trying to raise an awareness there are big DD bass in most of our bodies of water there not being caught. I wear polarized glasses 100% of the time and scan the water too.

Tom,
Dwight & I were fishing together the whole trip and we both agree with you here. So we didn't spend a more than an hour on the morning we first found the fish up shallow. It was easy to see right off that they were not willing to eat anything, so we moved on. Once we focusing our efforts on fish that had either already spawned or not moved up yet, we got bite. By this lakes standards, it was tough sledding.
I will not be rolling the dice again during the spawn and any return trips there I may be fortunate enough to take, will be planned considerably before or well after the fish are thinking about making babies . . . . .
