Craziest Thing That Happened To You While Fishing. 2024

fishing user avatarlivetofish28 reply :

I was fishing in a tournament this past April and on the last cast of the day I got snagged in a tree after trying to free it I gave up and snapped the line. After about 3 seconds I get smacked in the head by my Texas rig that managed to fly the 30 yards back to the boat slip weight and all. What's the wildest thing that's happened to you on the water.

fishing user avatarjimmykm21 reply :

While night fishing with no moon , dark as all hell in a canoe heard a loud splash and could see something large in the water 30 or so feet in front of me.

It really scared the crap out of me so I grabbed the paddle and started back paddling. I couldn't help my self and had to see what it was.

So I hit the headlamp on my light and it turned out to be a horse that got out of it's stable up the road.

fishing user avatarTyfisher reply :

This happened to me yesterday evening while fishing a small local pond. Was casting a 3/8 spinner on my baitcaster from a small clearing surrounded by trees...enough room to cast sidearm. After 10 or so successful casts I brought the rod back to cast again, brought it forward and the spinner nicked a dangling branch, but didn't get hung up and the cast followed through fairly smoothly. My line and lure started to go out and everything seemed fine, but when the spinner pulled the line taught it just continued on..and on..and on. I'm guessing the branch nicked my knot pretty good and caused it to break when it reached full extension. Ultimately I watched my spinnerbait sail halfway across the little pond and land with a solid plunk. I couldn't do anything but smirk and tie something else on.

fishing user avatarTWMstr reply :

Went to Gander Mtn. a local outdoor sporting goods store here in NC earlier. Bought my self a nice $200 spinning rod and reel combo and refused the one year warranty and went on my way to a lake near home to try it out. Pitched a senko under a tree, got caught on a small branch in the water, went to jerk and snap my line.... snapped my pole in half. Craziest thing to this day. Just fantastic.

fishing user avatarRobert Riley reply :

Mines close to the first story. Friend and I were scouting out a golf course (for night fishing) late one night. We got to the water and I saw a weird shape in the water, about 20 ft away. Just assumed it was a goose or something. When we got closer, it decided to say what's up. It was a dude snorkeling for golf balls. We ran into a guy on a golf course, snorkeling, at 2 am. THE ODDS.

fishing user avatarrockchalk06 reply :

When I was 15, dad and I were night fishing for walleye on Pratt Co. Lake. We watched this pickup circling the lake about 20-30 times. It's about 3 miles around so this went on for some time. Dad was a cop, so of course this peaked his interest. No cell phones at the time so we just waited. Next thing we see is a large rolled up carpet being pulled out of the back of the pickup and being tossed into the lake.

My dad didn't even reel up our lines, just hauled tail over there. Truck took off but dad got the tag. We drug the carpet up thinking there had to be a body in there. Dad started laughing and said "son we hit the mother load" found a total of 9 rifles and shotguns all rolled up. We ended up packing them up and headed into town to call the Sheriffs office. Turns out the weapons were not stolen but a mad jealous wife that had been cheated on took revenge on her hubby!

We never went night fishing again after that one lol

I was fishing a large cove and working some pilings well out in the middle and deer swam within 2 feet of my boat to cross the cove.  I think it was checking to see if my boat license was current. Had some idiot shoot over my head with a 22 about 4 times three years ago. That was fun.

Was this recent? What was the rod brand? Most likely you are still covered by a warranty. Or at least email the maker and ask for a replacement based on manufacturing defect.

Same here.  They don't look like airplane of helicopter lights.  Sometimes I try and dismiss them as maybe on some kind of tower/antenna but when I drive by in the daylight there's nothing there that could explain it.

fishing user avatarLow_Budget_Hooker reply :

Yea, there's no doubting these.  They'll go from one side of the horizon to the other in a second.  CRAZY speed with direction changes that just aren't possible with the technology we have to date

It's Chickenman!.....He's EVERYWHERE, HE'S EVERYWHERE!

fishing user avatarTuckahoe Joe reply :

Right on...I've seen lights like that twice.  The one time I was delivering a pizza and actually pulled off onto the side of the road for a couple minutes to watch them.  Crazy stuff.  The stationary lights I've seen 2 or 3 times but like I said, there's never anything to explain them away when I go back in the daylight.

Not trying to hijack the thread though.  Don't want this to turn into a UFO debate.

Was fishing a St. Johns lake, Lake Dexter, just south of Lake George and had a pod of manatees go absolutely crazy about 30 yards away from the boat.  Everybody thinks manatees are slow and lethargic but they can MOVE and make a huge disturbance in the water if scared or threatened.  I guess we scared them.  My buddies and I thought it was a monster gator and got kinda nervous until the manatees came to say hi.  Didn't have any lettuce for them though.

This happened to me last weekend on lake Okeechobee. The manatee snuck under the boat and started scratching his back on the bottom of the boat.

Maybe not a month later but the same day?

I was fishing in Canada one time when a small water spout, like a dust devil on water, not big like a tornado, passed directly through the boat I was in. Just soaked me and my fishing partner.

Was fishing the lakefront in Chicago and I watched a homeless addict, unprovoked, reinact a crime scene I assume he was a part of. I saw a homeless guy once while fishing. He was mumbling something about George W. Bush and Texas A&M. Lol

fishing user avatarBadContrakt reply :

Hmmm I don't have anything too crazy... YET. But I was fishing with my parents a few years back on their boat. They had some shiners in the water for Northern and I fish Bass exclusively. So I had a spinner bait on, throwing it to the edge of the lily pads and sure enough. WHAM! Fish on!

I was reeling him in, adjusting my drag because he felt pretty big, and none of us got a good look at the fish, cause he was still deep, and out of nowhere my line went completely slack. Thinking that the line broke, I pulled my rod up and started reeling.

It went from a big fight instantly to silent still water with me reeling my rod in disappointed that I lost him. Not 2 seconds later the beast of a bass came DIRECTLY VERTICAL at full speed 2 feet away from the edge of the boat, mouth wiiide open and my mom was hanging off the side of the boat to get a good view of the fight. When he came up she screamed so loud. It was hilarious. I did end up getting him in the boat. My PB was also my best fishing story. Was a good night.

fishing user avatarBluebasser86 reply :

This past winter I was tossing a crankbait at some riprap when it got hung up. I tried to pop it loose once and it didn't work. Second time I tried to pop it loose it had moved to the side a few feet from where it was supposed to be. I reeled down again and when I leaned on it again (the first time I'd pulled when it was snagged it wasn't moving and was without a doubt a snag) it swam off pulling line slowly. I assumed a catfish or carp had gotten itself snagged on my bait while it was stuck and pulled it loose until a big head and massive mouth were on the top attempting to shake my bait loose. She was barely hooked but we still managed to get her in the net. The end results was the 7.76 pound bass in my avatar.

This happened to me and my dad one time near ft leonardwood down in an ozark mountain valley pond. Were outside fishing late at night and we were just watching these crazy lights all night and we were becoming believers real quick. Well next morning were telling all the guys around the area about it and they just started laughing hard. Turns out it was the strip club right outside the base that has crazy flashing lights all night.

This actually happened last night. Was fishing with my cousin in a local pond. We put our float tubes in the water on one end of the pond and started fishing down the bank to the other side of the pond. We fished for about 2 hours and started heading back to where we put in. We saw something swimming about a hundred yards away and couldn't really tell what is was. It went under water for a few minutes and resurfaced about 20 yards from our tubes and........wait for it.......WHAMO! It slaps it's tail on the water! It was of course, a beaver. Being scared out of my mind and not wanting to pee in my waders, I took off back toward the other side of the pond. No way was I messing with that thing. My cousin is a little harder headed than I am, he just kept right on going. He get's about 40 feet from the bank and......wait for it......WHAMO! Two very angry beavers! They were both around 40-50lbs.They circled around him within two feet of his tube slapping their tails over and over, so close they were splashing him. He went ahead and followed my lead and took off to the other side of the bank. It was a pretty scary experience, I can't stop laughing out it though! I heard beavers are pretty docile if not provoked, I really didn't want to take the chance.....

Today I was using a Square Bill Rapala that dives 2 to 5 feet and I snagged into a big alligator. By far the coolest experience of my life.

I cast out and was about to reel in and then the beast emerges from the water right in front of my lure. So I take out my iPhone and video it, if someone can tell me how to upload a video I would post it in a thread. There were 4 other gators all watching me and it was cool that I snagged the BIGGEN lost my lure though obviously.

Don't you have a 14 day return policy? then you can also purchase a extended warranty

also the manufacture has a 1 year warranty you can use if you still have the receipt.. so you should be still covered either way

my dad and i were on a hot stretch of grass where we caught about a dozen in 60yds.

fishing user avatarbigbill reply :

I lost my crawfish red crankbait. A week later fishing in the same spot the hook on my crankbait snagged it. I had twin cranks on the same line.

At dusk just before daybreak I seen two freshwater otters splashing two fawns near the waters edge while trying to get a drink of water while the doe looked on.

Another time while fishing off a low bridge at first light I had 3 or 4 otters swimming parallel right at me. I thought of the movie predator and froze. All of a sudden they stopped and poked up there heads.

I can imagine one of these otters feeding on a new state record bass.

I think it was 1984...I was fishing on Conesus Lake here in NY with my grandfather. There was a guy flying a biplane over the lake, and he was doing all kinds of loops and crazy rolls. On one of his loops my grandfather says "he's not gonna make it"! Well, he didn't! The guy crashed his plane head first into the lake. We were in his small fishing boat with a 9.9 Johnson on it, and were about a eighth mile away so we motored over to help. By the time we got there someone had already pulled him out of the water. Craziest thing I've ever seen while fishing!!!

fishing user avatarSmallmouth Hunter reply :

Well I don't have any great stories YET, or maybe I just can't remember them, but here Is an ok one.

So I have this small pond in my neighborhood an it has grass carp, bream, bass, minnows (mud minnows I'm guessing) and lots of turtles. I decided to go fishing here one day after buying some new equipment. I believe it was a red eye shad I was trying out. Anyways, I ended up getting a snag on a fallen tree and was forced to break the line. About 3 weeks later I was talking to a neighbor of mine who said he caught a big carp with his cast net and that it had a lure snagged on it. He isn't a big bass fisherman so he had no use for it. Well, it turned out to be the exact red eye shad that I snagged earlier that month. Hahaha i was shocked. I guess the big carp swam past the log and got hooked and pulled it off the log/tree.

fishing user avatarsenile1 reply :

About 7 years ago, I was fishing a pond in a jon boat.  At the time, the pond produced some solid fish and I had just gained permission to fish there.  The owner of the pond kept the jon boat on the bank.  I had been fishing for 30 or 45 minutes and had already caught two or three bass in the 3 lb range if memory serves me correctly.  I was sitting down in the boat and, at that point, I happened to notice some movement on my foot.  I looked down and there was a spider crawling onto my foot and its body was huge.  I swear, it looked like its body was an inch wide.  I jumped out of my skin for a second and shook my foot.  When I jumped I tipped the boat way over and water poured in.  The boat righted itself but there was too much water in it to really stay afloat, or so I thought.  I grabbed my rods and jumped out of the boat holding them high over my head.  The pond was a bit over 15 feet at its deepest spot, but fortunately for me, the water where I was standing was only up to my neck.  So walking with my rods over my head and with one hand on the bow of the boat I headed for shore.  My tackle box was still in the boat, underwater.  However, when I got to shore I had the task of pulling the boat through a few feet of thick cattails.  I picked the thinnest spot I could find to do this.  With the water in the boat, it was quite heavy, and after a couple of minutes of work I had the boat next to the shore.  Then I reached my next obstacle.  The shoreline was quite steep so I had to drag the boat up far enough to tip it and pour the water out.  I finally reached my destination, covered in muck and all manner of vegetative debris, thankful that I had not encountered a snake.  I started to tip the boat up to empty the water and as I was doing so I noticed the big spider was still in the boat, floating on top of the water, as if gloating over its conquest.  I gladly raised the boat and the spider was swept away into the pond with the water, though I suspect that didn't do him in.  After all, it was walking on water.

I poured the water out of my tackle box and straightened everything up as well as could be expected and then continued to fish.  I finished the day with 16 bass and a silly story to tell.

The lake has a healthy northern pike and largemouth population, so I almost stuck my hand in its mouth (thinking it was a bass) to pull it out of the net...luckily I noticed those sharp teeth before I stuck my thumb in there!

I was fishing with a buddy of mine in a local river where he hooked a nice smallmouth. We were fishing an area that is widely known for musky. While reeling in his smallmouth a musky came up and bit his fish and lure! The musky came up a few times and would eventually go back to the bottom. Unfortunately his line snapped and he lost both fish and lure. Yeah this is a fish tale but I actually have this on video!! I couldn't believe it happened!

A similar thing happened to me. I was on the Delta about a week ago and watched 3 jets do stunts, the jets were navy blue and red but I couldn't figure out who they were. Anyways they did barrel rolls, flips, let smoke out of the jet and all sorts of cool stuff for about 45 minutes. I was distracted from fishing the whole time and ended up missing a lot of bites

I decided to wade in my shorts to cover more water and about 30 min in I saw something large in the corner of my eye breaking the surface. I wasn't sure what I was thinking, but I freaked a little bit and ran back to shore the best I could. After that I was more curious than afraid and looked around. It turned out to be a large otter. It was big that at first I thought it was a seal. It was the very first time I saw one and never knew they lived in this state.

I got a crankbait hung up while fishing out of a buddies jon boat.  As we got directly over it I could see the outline of a windshield and a roof.  We were about 15 yards from the shoreline at a popular spot for the bucket brigade.  I called the office and they sent the dive team and a wrecker.  They pulled out a 1988 Oldsmobile.  Turned out it was owned by a Asian male who didn't know what to do with it when he decided to return overseas.   So he sunk it.  Almost 3 years to the date at the same spot I got hung up again.  Getting over the snag I could see a white roof!   Made another call to the office and we pulled up a new golf cart.  It had been stolen 3 nights before from a course about 2 miles away and sunk by kids.

About a month ago we were fishing a man made canal that stretches for miles.  We had cruised to the ramp to find a Florida Fish and Wildlife Officer waiting there to do a safety check.  We didn't flash our badges and obliged him as he checked the boat and cooler.  He then told me my license was expired and I had to point out it was only a month old.  He then told us we had violated the "no speed zone".  We asked him did he mean "no wake zone" since that's the term the state statute has always used.  He said no and he didn't know what we meant.  Nowhere on the canal system is there any Idle speed or no wake signs as required.  I was starting to feel a little squirrely as he said he'd let us go, so I said to him, Say hello to your supervisor Lt. so and so (who I'd known for 30 years).  He said I wasn't pronouncing his name right and threw my license at me.  A week later I saw my old FWC friend and asked him about this officer.  He told me he not only didn't know who the guy was but didn't even have a man of that ethnic race working in the district!  Hmmmm  Imposter?  Only if he had stolen a brand new F150 pickup totally rigged and marked with stripes, lights and FWC state license plate.   And what about the uniform and gun?

This year I had two hawks fighting each other about 100+ feet in the air. I watched them for a while, as they were really going at it with the screeching. I decided to get back to fishing and only minutes later I heard a giant splash only feet from my boat that scared me out of my skin. Turns out the hawks were fighting over a squirrel and that giant splash came from one of them dropping it. Dang thing almost landed in my boat. I don't want to imagine what a squirrel traveling around terminal velocity would do to my rig, much less my head.

Another time I was fishing from shore with a buddy when he told me he had lost a lure the day before in the area I was fishing. A few casts later, I snagged some line which I brought in by hand. On the other end of the line was his lure... and a bass.

Wow, I would have called it a day after that swim.  I'm glad you finished off the day on a good note!

Everytime I go to this pond I take Raid with me.  If I forget the Raid I give the boat a full inspection before sliding it into the water.  There are a lot of big field spiders at this place.  I know they aren't  poisonous but it's hard not to jump when you find one crawling on you.

I was fishing one day and this loon comes along under the water. I'm sitting there watching it go by about 5' underwater, and all of a sudden it does a fast u-turn and goes down further after something. I see it come up with a fish. I'm fishing with a crankbait right at that moment, but I hear my drag go off on my other rod. I had forgotten I had a live bluegill on it and the loon had just taken my bait. So I start wrapping the line around my hands and yank that gill right out of the loon's mouth underwater. Of course the loon starts chasing my gill and here I am frantically yanking line in as this loon is chasing this bluegill who is having one heck of a ride. I finally yank the fish out of the water and it gets stuck on something underneath the dock. Not that bluegill's day. After I got him untangled, the loon had swam off, and the poor fish was still alive so I decided he had earned his freedom. I chucked him back in and after recovering on his side for a while, he swam off.

Couple stories to share....

First, I was about ten or so fishing with my grandfather and dad at night on Cherokee Lake in TN. I was so young and excited I didn't know or care what we were fishing for! LOL. Anyway, we pulled up to a rock ledge and my grandfather had an OLD pump Coleman lantern. I can remember him pumping the thing at least twenty times and we had light.  He sat it on the rock ledge and the lamp caught fire!  He grabbed it and heaved it over into the water and sploosh! Mini explosion.  Well, fish started floating up to the top and we decided to high tail it out of there. Fished maybe ten minutes!

Secondly, a good friend of mine and myself were scout fishing a lake in preparation for an upcoming tourney.  We got to the far end of the lake and since it was his boat, I was in the back.  We started fishing and I asked if I should be hearing running water?  He said a little. I opened the battery compartments and we were taking on a massive amount of water!  He pulled his line in and we headed for the dock.  The boat was so heavy with water, I had to climb out on the bow to even be able to see where we were headed. He then informs me that he cant swim!  We get to the dock, he jumps out to get his trailer.  I spin around to get a running shot at the trailer and down goes the boat. Me, tackle and all!  We got the boat out. We missed the tourney!

A couple of times fishing at Truman Lake (which is kinda close to Whitman AFB) I had a stealth bomber go overhead.    Those are cool planes.  It is amazing how small they look coming at you, how large they are when they are directly overhead and then what a small profile they have when they are flying away.

About 10 years ago I had just gotten my first baitcaster. Nothing expensive and I had 15lb mono on it. Went to a large reservoir and was "fishing" with it off of some docks in about 20 feet of water, it was more practicing than fishing. I decided to put a 1oz spinnerbait on it and gave it one heckuva almighty cast. When I did, somehow a backlash formed (either before the cast or during it) and instantly stopped the line. Well, according to the laws of physics, that 1oz lure was enough weight to jerk the rod/reel right out of my hands and plunked it deep down in 20 feet of water.

That left a bad taste in my mouth, and I just now started using a BC, albeit with a tighter grip and better reel.  :)

I was out fishing at a pond in the winter for trout and we were catching them every cast...nothing big, but fun on ul tackle.

Before we got to the pond we noticed a red tail hawk perched in a tree. ..we started fishing and I hooked one, as I was reeling it in this hawk swoops down and grabs my trout. This happened 2 more times after another hawk decided to join the first one. Needless to say I Wasn't too upset, it was really cool to see.

ive also fed a heron a bluegill and have had a snake take a bluegill from the end of my line

Last night I was fishing a place called the Allenton boat ramp with friends. Around 10pm guy rolls in with a jet ski and asks us to help him back it up. After getting it in the water he asked how often police patrol the area. Well he gets on the jet ski and tries to start it. The thing wouldn't start. He says he really needs it to start since his buddy is having boat troubles and he needs to jump the boat for him. He finally gets the thing going, turns around, proceeds maybe 50 feet, and it dies. Gets it started again, goes a little further, and it dies. He couldn't get it to start again. He started floating down the river. He managed to get it going again and took off. He said it would take 15 minutes to get there and some time there, and 15 minutes back. 2 hours later he still isn't back. Police called, they didn't know where the Allenton Boat ramp was!!! Its a conservation ground how do they not know where it is!!! 20 minutes later a county cop finds us. We started to hear the guy yell. His jet ski drug bottom, and was stuck. He was towing his friends jet ski. The helicopter was called in, 2 ambulances, 2 fire trucks, a grand total of 4 police cars, and 3 fire boats were called in. The one guy actually swam up the river 200 yards to the ramp! His friend was apparently "stuck" somehow, and couldn't move. He was in the middle of the river and couldn't swim to shore. We never did find out what was preventing him from swimming. It was really odd. Guy asks how often police patrol the area, has a box of .40 s&w hollow points, empty beer cans, and his car smelt of illegal substances. Everybody went home, and the 2 jet ski guys said they were going back to the river around 6 today to try and get their jet skis...

I used to fish the Upper Potomac river near American Legion bridge, rock hopping my way downstream.  It was always productive, some days we caught 100+ Smallmouth on helgramites. Most were not of any great size, but there were some fatties in there. It was always a good, long day fishing.  That is, until a nudist began showing up rather regularly. At first he was easy to avoid, then he must have gotten his courage up and began coming in closer to talk, making no effort to cover himself up... creeped me way out, and I've since abandoned going down there to fish.

I was fishing up on sodus bay, lake ontario and i also had just bought a quantium spinning rod and reel combo  and Gander Mtn just to fill a place for wacky rig fishing that I didnt feel like doing with a baitcaster. The day after i had gotten the setup i was in a tournament in the bay, i was reeling in my senko and i heard something hit the floor of the boat. I wasn't really thinking so I looked over the reel briefly not to waste away time and then reeled again. This time pieces flew everywhere, on the boat and in the water and there was nothing I could do but rig up a baitcaster with a senko. It turns out that in a way I am glad that this reel fell apart and forced me to use my baitcaster for my wacky rig because I ended up hooking the tournaments lunker and there is no doubt in my mind that the spinning reel would have given out then and I would have been just short of the prize money. I went back to Gander with the spinning rod setup and I told customer service that half of my reel was in sodus bay, sure enough they gave me a full refund.

I was getting angry since I assumed someone on shore was messing with me, then finally realized it was 2 Beavers and I was pretty close to their lodge. When they were doing that tail slap thing, I though someone was throwing huge rocks in the lake or something. I had no idea up until that time there were Beavers in that area (Princeton NJ).  Managed to get a few pics of the event.

Not really that crazy, but when I thought it was a R/C Boat I thought I was going to go crazy.
