Goals for the 2016 Fishing Season 2024

fishing user avatarWI_Angler1989 reply :

Alright, guys and gals, let's take a poll. I wanna hear what everyone's biggest goal is for this coming season. We all have the obvious ones: catch fish, learn new techniques, etc but I wanna know the unique ones.

Mine is to explore my local river, the chippewa, in my canoe rig. I've lived here most of my life and feel like I've missed so much time and adventure in my own back yard!

Well that's mine, let's hear yours!

fishing user avatarBasspro3106 reply :

I know must guys don't want to hear this but I need to take it easy with buying tackle I think I only use 15% of the things I buy.

fishing user avatarBluebasser86 reply :

I want to figure out how to catch fish on a drop shot. It seems like such a simple rig and concept, yet I can almost never have any success with it.

I also would like to stick with my usual yearly goals of a largemouth over 6 and a smallmouth over 4. I haven't managed to do it two years in a row yet, so maybe this year will be that year.

I'd like to learn dropshot as well. I haven't tried it yet. Hopefully I can figure it out!

As for you're weight goals, good luck! I will definitely have a 4+ smallie here but 6 is a big largemouth in my neck of the woods.

The state record smallmouth in Kansas isn't even 7 pounds, so a 4 pounder is pretty huge, but I still seem to have better luck reaching that goal than I do the 6lb largemouth every year. I had a 4+ pound smallmouth in 2014 also, but fell just shy on the largemouth with a 5.89lb fish being my biggest. I'd love to hit the 7lb and 5lb mark in the same year. I haven't caught a 7lb largemouth in a few years and it's been several years since my last 5lb smallmouth.

Good luck to you! I finally have my own scale this year instead of using a friends, assuming they're with me. I'm looking forward to finally knowing the weight of those special fish that get the hands shaking.

fishing user avatarFishinthefish reply :

My goal is to find more people to fish with. I've lived in north west Illinois for four or five years now and hardly know anybody. I'm origionally from New York. So I might have to bite the bullet and join a bass club or something.

fishing user avatarscaleface reply :

My goal is to find some deep cover or subtle structure on some flats . There are these three flats I know of that always show lots of fish at the same location , on the depth finder for a reason I dont know . The fish are a mixed bag of crappie , channel cats , bluegill and bass . I cant help but think there is some  subtle structure or cover there with some monster bass . I just have to take the time to find it .

fishing user avatarNitrofreak reply :

Mine is to get a lot better at understanding structure, just took a trip to my home lake this past weekend and did not even wet a line, with the exception of dragging a heavy jig around some areas to get a feel for what I was seeing, just focused on where the fish were this time of year and tried my best to locate some productive areas, I learned where the fish were not at unfortunately but at the same time I learned a lot about what I did see.

I went through a period where I was losing almost all of my big fish. I was trying to horse the fish in like I seen the pros do on TV. Now I'm back to a more finesse approach at landing them and lip almost all of them .

This was a weird year.  Had it happen a number of years ago too.  A lot of them were on small 1/8 buzzbaits.  On prefish days they ATE it.  On tourney days they SPIT IT!!!!

That seems like that type of thing happens a lot during tournaments!

Two things I want to get better at are improving my deep game, and my other goal is to better pattern fish every day I'm on the water.

fishing user avatarRacerx reply :

I'm setting out to do more soft plastic techniques.  I suddenly realized that I tend to be more of a hard bait angler, primarily cranks and jerks, so I wanna change things up and hopefully, in the process, improve my catch percentage. Just bought a new Curado I in the past couple months, and just waiting on some cash flow to mate it up with a good sensitive rod for throwing plastics.

fishing user avatarbuzzed bait reply :

i "think" one goal is going to be to fish a tournament of some kind this year, either draw or a kayak tournament just to see if i like it.

my real goal is to dial in on my depth finder and really figure out how to use it to my benefit rather than just having a screen to look at!

fishing user avatarjunyer357 reply :

I have 3. First is to fish with some guys who really know and understand how to read the si/di equipment and really learn how to use it fully to my advantage.  Spent too much money on it not to be able to take advantage of it.

Second is to start fishing more places on my local lakes, rather than fishing same spots, same launch, etc.. i have used for years.  Really get out and learn the lake, not just my comfort areas.

Third is to learn to flip better. Really concentrate on being able to put a lure were i want and barely make a splash when it lands. I am fairly accurate with a baitcaster but normally not very subtle on the landings. I know this is probably costing me fish.

Yeah, they are, always changing. Especially if we get high water this year. Last year the water level was normal in the spring. I want to make a long trip down it and explore/fish the whole stretch.

To learn how to use my FF in the way it was meant to be used. What I mean is that I can use it to find structure and stuff, I just don't really use any of its real features like mapping and stuff. Heck I'm still trying to figure out what it is I'm looking at sometimes.

+1, I think we can agree on "learn more techniques."

fishing user avatarDerekbass02 reply :

Catch a 4.5 pound or bigger largemouth and a 4 or bigger smallmouth. Also would like to catch a big pike. Biggest one I've caught is only 29 inches.

fishing user avatarBaitMonkey1984 reply :

My goal is not to have the boat trailer come off the ball. No damage other than having the safety chains snap. Been trailering boots for 6+ years on an almost daily basis and that still gets to me almost 4 months later.

In all seriousness, my goal is to learn presentations I set out to learn last year and quickly abandoned. Specifically drop shot, carolina rig, and deep cranking. My small lake has one deep area 22-30 feet. I know it hold the big girls seeing the rest of the lake is avg 12 ft depth and there is a rock ledge and several points nearby. But I just love fishing docks and shallow cover. I want to beat my PB, caught 2 years ago at 6lbs even and up here I think I really need to move deep to have a shot at that.

fishing user avatarSteveo-1969 reply :

My goal for 2016 isn't to catch more fish or bigger fish or set a PB (although all of those would be nice!)  My goal is just to fish as much as possible.  For me the enjoyment is the act of fishing itself, and the catching is the icing on the cake.

Oh, and maybe I'll finally tie on a Ned rig this year and try that out...

I think that's a good goal for me too. And I know this is "bass" resource, but pike are one of my absolute favorite fish to catch. They put up a hell of a fight, hit your lure like a train, and just look sweet. My biggest is about 32 or so.

Agreed, actually commit to learning the techniques I plan to. That's a problem for me. I'll get all the tackle, start doing it and fall back to the familiar if it isn't a home run early. Time to change that.

fishing user avatarno39 reply :

Same as always, to crush my enemies, to see them driven before me, and to hear the lamentations of their women.  Realistically, improve on boating skills, improve casting accuracy, learn to read situations a bit better, and give New York state less money.

fishing user avatarA-Jay reply :

There's a strong possibility that some time come early summer, I'll be fishing from a new and more capable platform.  This will mean access to several new & bigger bodies of water.  Once this happens,  one of my immediate priorities will include becoming proficient with the new equipment.  And it's been a while since I've fished new (and especially larger lakes) and had the ability move from spot to spot & cover water, so  I'll need to hone my chart / graph reading skills in advance of getting on the water and then apply effective & solid bass holding habitat locating skills.     Should be fun.

However, well before any of that deal takes place, there's going to be a matter of getting out into the first open water available with the Old Town and finding my first Michigan 6 lb plus smallie . . . .

I sure would like to get better at jig fishing.  My years of ocean and trout fishing has my brain set on the nibble and yank for hook up and it seems with two years of bass fishing under my belt, I still have a problem with those soft bites.

My goal is to fish in some different spots.  I always make plans to fish this lake, or that lake, but I usually end up back at the same old water.

fishing user avatarBruce424 reply :

Get comfortable with more techniques. Starting with the jerkbait. Tidy up my football jigging. Been awhile since I used it. Then start drop shotting. Get confidence in that.

And also catch state record bass. Haha.

My goals are catch 10 lb'er on chickamagua in March. Win or place in Tuesday night buddy tourney with my daughter in blue marsh tourney. Catch musky during our annual kinzua trip (while avoiding bears around tent). Break 6 lbs on Lake Erie trip. Find new lake to fish. Learn to fish swimming jigs.

Yeah, I don't get out all that often maybe 40 outings last year in the spring/summer/fall.  I keep a small log of outings which includes temp, weather conditions, water clarity and number of fish and what lure worked.  If you're interested my club has a couple of outings in southern WI this year and we're doing an online tournament.  And it doesn't matter what kayak you have, whatever it takes to get you out on the water. :)

I should start keeping a small log too. Anything to help me learn, right. Not to mention going over it in the winter sounds pretty fun, like right now it would be nice haha.

Heck yeah, man! When/if I get a kayak Id love to make a trip. Fun but nerve wracking, I've never fished a tourney.

I want to set a new PB for LMB..and to finally catch a mermaid.

fishing user avatarJunk Fisherman reply :

It's surprising that I don't already have this list made up since this is something I do every year.  Now is as good a time as any.

1)  Fish a couple more new lakes.  During spring I plan on fishing Little Grassy in So IL and for my big June vacation I want to hit Lake Charlevoix for a day or two in addition to the other lakes I fish in the area.

2)  Learn, learn, learn about fishing Lake Michigan in the Chicagoland area.  I just ordered a new boat that is much better for the big water so it will allow me to go out more often.  Every time I go out I want to learn about a new spot and what it has to offer.  Use my electronics better.  Maybe even dust off the old Aqua View to check things out.

3)  Get back into club fishing.  After taking a 5 year break, I rejoined my old club and plan on fishing a few events.  I also want to become more involved in the Jr. Bassmaster club.

4)  Continue to improve on techniques and using my graphs.  This is kinda a given since every year I look to improve my arsenal and get better at different techniques.

fishing user avatarjignfule reply :

Have fun and enjoy  The only real fishing goal I've ever had.

fishing user avatarRiver Dave reply :

My main goal for the year, other than enjoying it, is to fish some new water. I swear I fish the same spots so many times each year the local fish know me by sight. This year I really want to fish some of the smaller local lakes which will also allow me to work on some new techniques.

#2 would be to learn how to fish deeper water.

#3 is to break 5lbs (green or brown). Almost impossible to do where I usually go but sounds very realistic for some of the new lakes I've been trying up. I've done it several times in the past but its probably been over ten years now because I always fish the same place.

fishing user avatarMosster47 reply :

I think we have 22 tourneys this year. I'd like to break even in my entry fees with my winnings.

Ooohh I like that idea, that's a great challenge. I throw an ultralight spooled with 6lb mono about half the time I'm fishing and catch a lot of 3 pounders with the occasional 4. I've never caught any bass over 6lb with it but my PB smallmouth is right at 6lbs and was caught on the ultralight and I once caught a 36" Northern with it. I absolutely love big fish on light tackle.

......I suppose I should also add that there are limits to my whole "big fish on light tackle" statement. I was having so much fun with the ultra a few years back that I decided to downsize to a micro. Worked great for a while and I landed some 1.5 - 2 pounders and even a few pickerel with it but it broke the first time I hooked a Northern. I guess there are limits

#2 Take my kids fishing as much as possible

#3 Have fun................it is just fishing

#4 Don't break anything expensive

#5 Spend the least amount of money as possible on crap I don't need

#6 Spend as much time on the water as I can, it's better than sitting around the house

I did that last year. I was actually crappie fishing with a kids transformers pole. Caught one just over 7lb on 6# test. It was a lot of fun. Good gosh was it a lot of reeling on that thing. It must only be a 2:1 ratio or something.

everyone has some great ideas for goals this season but what i want to focus on this year is not stressing out so much when im on the water. When i fish of course i look to have success but sometimes i think i stress myself out to the extent that im not taking enough in. Just having the opportunity to be out there and enjoying the sport is what im going to focus on this year.

A couple goals for 2016

1 Go shore fishing from the beach to catch southern flounder

2 Catch a bass over 5lbs

3 Find new Honey Holes

4 Spend more time on Bass Resource

I have a few new goals after hearing everyone elses:

-actually USE all the tackle I bought this winter to leanr. Things like dropshot (completely new to me), finesse jigs, etc.

-go on fishing trips. Whether it's a full blown 3 hr drive campout, or a day trip to a new lake.

-catch a 5# smallie

-get reacquainted with my small local lake. I grew up fishing it and have stopped canoeing it. You don't get the full effect from shore.

Try Farm & fleet in Chippewa ( I work there) , Fleet Farm or Dunham's in Menomonie, cheaper kayaks than Scheels or Gander.

I have an 8' sit in kayak that is rather small, but my store got it in by accident and sold it to me for $60. Far from an ideal yak, but it gets me from one end of the pond to the other.

Goals for this year are to fish more, fish for more species more often, and fish new waters. Simple, but rewarding if I break out of my comfort zone.

They're not monsters but I'm giving it an honest effort. I had several other bites and would have caught more I'm sure but I broke off the one and only hook I had because I only had about 30 minutes to fish.

Hey, they're fish after all. Plus doing it on the dropshot is a victory! Very nice start. I'm jealous of those power plant lakes......even my rivers are iced up for the most part.

These were cold water fish. Everything around here has been thawed for a couple weeks now.

Even more envious then. I'm tired of hibernating.

My goal this year will be the same as it's been the last several years....To get my 85yo Dad out fishing as much as I can.

After 2 years overseas, and coming back to the aftermath of catastrophic flooding that devastated and/or re-made most of my fishing waters, I need to get reacquainted. Some of my very best waters were nearly wiped out and won't reopen until next year. All were impacted. Got some hoofing to do. Wish me luck.

fishing user avatarlo n slo reply :

good luck. please keep us posted.

My goal is to be around come the end of the season, everything else that may happen is a bonus.
