What percentage of your fishing tackle purchases are made online? 2024

fishing user avataraustinF reply :

I'm curious what everyone's general purchase preference when buying fishing tackle.

For me, about 70% online. Not only for fishing tackle, i buy most things online.

fishing user avatarKDW96 reply :

90%, because there are no local tackle shops.

fishing user avatardesmobob reply :

95%

I live in a rural area.  It's 25 miles to the nearest places that have tackle, and they are almost all big chain stores I prefer not to do business with.

Tight lines,

Bob

fishing user avatarGundog reply :

Only about 10% for me. Most of my tackle comes from a nearby Walmart. I do have a BPS and Cabela's within an hours drive of me. Its 2 hrs to the nearest small bait and tackle shop but its worth the travel.

fishing user avatarA-Jay reply :

I've got to be close to 90 % anyway.

Maybe even 95%.

A-Jay

fishing user avatarZach Winn reply :

About 25%. I’m in Canada so it’s $27 shipping for a tacklewarehouse order and we get dinged with customs.

fishing user avatarBluebasser86 reply :

90-95%. Prices are cheaper and shipping is free, doesn't make any sense to drive an hour to Bass pro or Cabelas. I do buy some stuff at Academy or the local shop once in a while though.

fishing user avatar2tall79 reply :

99%, the other 1% is the occasional find at Wal-Mart

fishing user avatarburrows reply :

75% mainly tackle warehouse

and target /Walmart on line.

fishing user avatarthinkingredneck reply :

30+%

fishing user avatarDeeare reply :

90% for me.   The other 10% is from a local tackle shop that I try to support as much as I can.

fishing user avatarThe Fisher reply :

95% and usually exclusive to when they have sales. Sometimes my local Academy has some Sales I  take advantage of but the big box stores are just too expensive compared to the many online stores. Many of the fishing companies, especially like Keitech, Jig Companies, Rapala  etc.  have their own online stores too and you can find items, colors, sizes, etc. you can’t find either in a store or at TW.

fishing user avatarJoshFromBolo reply :

About 50/50 for me, a lot of my stuff comes from the good ol walmart down the street or mystery tackle box/TW :D

fishing user avatarFish the Mitt reply :

Roughly 50%

I work to support two main local businesses. One considersbly larger (with 2 locations) and the other being a real small bait & tackle.

Both places are more expensive than what I can find online, but between convenience and the fact their both family owned and local, it makes it easier.

fishing user avatarburrows reply :

I know some ppl order groceries now on line! I haven’t went that far yet but that’s just crazy man crazy !

fishing user avatarAngry John reply :

95% tackle warehouse

4% used swim baits

1% bps down the road only in an emergency.  Yeah I know but there is such a thing.

fishing user avatarscaleface reply :

Most of my purchases are online simply because its the only way to get what I want . I did get two jigs and a pack of worms today at the Farm store .

fishing user avatarMumbly reply :

About 95% online for me also. Not much available locally or I would support them.

fishing user avatarHoosierFisher reply :

Probably 75% of my purchases are online. American Legacy Fishing is local for me and I've bought things there. The rest of my purchases are a mix of Academy/Wal-Mart/Dick's. I actually was in Dick's today and left with a few things.

fishing user avatarFishin Dad reply :

Around 80% for me.   I used to order a bunch from the Cabelas bargain Cave, but lately, that gas been a mess.   Probably spend less money this way.   I tend to shop around for deals.   Tackle Warehouse, Dicks, etc.   I usually only buy on sale items.   The other 20% is giving the business to a storefront like Cabelas, Fleet Farm, or Bass Pro, or local tackle shop.    It's fun to be able to look around and handle some stuff.   I figure I owe them some business to offer me that opportunity.

fishing user avatarRaul reply :

Thank God it’s like 95% ...... I can think and rethink, add to the cart and three days later remove stuff I don’t need, sure, nothing beats the allure of being at the store but in store purchases turn out catastrophic, guess you fellas have never seen the purty lady in American Express card being beat the living schnitz out of her, not a purty sight, had to put her in the ER after my last visit to BPS.

fishing user avatarBurke reply :

90% : tacklewarehouse and fishing forums.

10% is the occasional emergency at BPS

fishing user avatarCatt reply :

Zero %  ????

fishing user avatarTodd2 reply :

Rough guess..

20% - Walmart

60% - Academy

20% - Online

fishing user avatarOregon Native reply :

I'm almost like Catt.....prefer going into a local tackle store like I did in the good ol days.  Like to BS with others and support a place where if I need something quick it's usually there.  Pretty rare for me to order.

fishing user avatarcrypt reply :

I'm with Catt nothing. tried it but would rather go to my favorite tackle shop and shop. I have 3 favorite tackle shops by the way.

I'm ole school ????

I wanna look you in the eyes so you'll understand if I have a problem with a purchase you'll have a problem!

fishing user avatarscaleface reply :

Other than Wal Mart and the Farm Store there is no tackle store here . I have to order on-line or drive 100 miles .

fishing user avatarMNGeorge reply :

Except emergencies or really good sale prices, I buy everything on line.

fishing user avatarTroy85 reply :

Maybe 5% online.  I only buy something online if I can't find it in the store.

fishing user avatarjunyer357 reply :

About 80% online. Mosty tackle wharehouse, ebay,  and siebert. Occasionally from acadamy if they dont have it in store. Bass pro is too high on anything but their brand stuff.

Around here its mostly acadamy and a local tackle shop with a smidgen of walmart.

fishing user avatarbwillis reply :

Probably about 50/50 for me these days.  Various places online, or Wal-Mart/Dick's/Bass Pro locally

fishing user avatarDwight Hottle reply :

95% for me.

fishing user avatarnascar2428 reply :

With one tackle store in the area that caters to walleye and pan fishermen. It's been 100% online so far for this year. That may change slightly once Gander Outdoors reopens later this year.

fishing user avatardgkasper58 reply :

I have gone to about 95% online.  Too many good sales out there.  Many stores price match as well :D to avoid shipping costs and get great promotions.

I found the Curado K for $109 deal shopping.

Where did you find that deal???

fishing user avatarColumbia Craw reply :

50%   I attempt to purchase as much as I can from my local family owned business.  I am lucky to be on a first name basis with the owner and they take great care of me. We also have Sportsman's Warehouse in town with a surprisingly good selection.  Having Cabelas and BPS in the area means nothing. They don't have anything I want.

fishing user avatarfishwizzard reply :

I am close to 100% online, with maybe 1-2 trips a year to SFT when I go smallie fishing in PA.  There is a Bass Pro I hit up occasionally when I am in the area, but I never buy much.

I would prefer to have more inperson options, but I live in a very salt-focused area, so most local shops don't have much for me.

I wish we still had a Sportsman's Warehouse. They were always a good place to pick up baits and rods cheap. Got a good flipping rod from them for only $40 out the door.

fishing user avatarKsam1234 reply :

About 75% bc sometimes I like to see what I'm buying in person (weird habit ) acruslly just got hit by he bait monkey and bought 125$ in lures from tacklewarehosue today ????

fishing user avatarHawkeye21 reply :

I'm probably 95% online.  There are not many options very close to me to buy tackle and those options don't have a great selection or prices.  Every time I go to Cabela's I act like I'm going to buy a bunch of stuff but rarely end up getting anything because everything is full price.  I can get almost any lure for a $1 less from TW than at Cabela's.  I still will buy stuff from Cabela's but even then it's online when I find stuff on sale.

The only time I buy in store is if I see some discounted stuff or I'm on a fishing trip and need something now.

Dicks- Got a price match from another site.  Then was able to apply another code.

fishing user avatarJohnbt reply :

I'm pushing 75% or 90% or something. We have good shops around here: Greentop, Hopkins, etc, as well as a Bass Pro and a smaller Cabelas and multiple Dick's, but they don't carry the rods and reels I want at this point - the $250 or $300 and up ones. Sure, they'll special order a Legend Tournament Bass or a Conquest, but why should I drive across town to order it and then go back when it comes in, when I can sit at home and wait on the delivery truck?

So when I'm ordering on line I go ahead and get line and lures and such too. I love sales. And free shipping.

Of course, now that I'm on so many mailing lists I get good offers from time to time. Last week a boating goods outfit in NC emailed me a 30% off coupon good for ONE day on any ONE item. Not needing anything :) I prowled around the site and discovered they had Tatula LT 2500. What the heck, it's very nice.

fishing user avatarohboyitsrobby reply :

50/50 or close to it. Tackle warehouse mainly online occasionally ebay. Dicks and academy in store. I'm a bargain hunter to a fault.

fishing user avatarlo n slo reply :

i live 10 minutes from the lake.

years ago we had local tackle/bait stores but those days are gone. i can still drive 20 minutes to get minnows, crappie hooks, and bobbers but thats the extent of it. i could drive 45 minutes to BPS, or an hour thru Charlotte traffic to Cabelas in SC, to overpay for stuff that i can buy (in bulk) online at a much better price. nope. the local Walmart and Dicks offers some limited tackle. i buy from them on occasion.

90% online for me.

fishing user avatarblckshirt98 reply :

I'm probably at 60% online 40% in store for tackle/lures/reels, and 25% online and 75% in store for rods.  Something about rods where I need to feel them in person before I buy.  The tackle/lures/reels will probably lean towards online in the future as a few local tackle shops have closed shop the past few years.

fishing user avatarLxVE Bassin reply :

I would say 30% is bought on line. I buy more online during the off-season but when I need something ASAP I got Gander or Cabela’s since my Walmart is as cool as most the guys on here.

fishing user avatarBankbeater reply :

Probably about 80% online. I have a BPS and a Cabela’s near me but they never seem to have what I am looking for.

fishing user avatarObi_Wan reply :

75%

fishing user avatarMinnowzNuttin reply :

For me probably around 85% TW, amazon, and ebay. Local I'll hit up academy, cabelas, and a few local tackle shops.

fishing user avatarbowhunter22 reply :

probably 95% online. The only stores around here are walmart and an outdoor store that is mostly geared towards panfish, catfish, and walleye. They have one bait caster in store and its a discontinued revo winch. Pretty much the only time I do shop in store is if I'm out of town and I need to stock up a thing or two or forget something or I'm around the scheels close. I get most everything on tackle ware house cheaper

I didn’t read the post rite I thought it meant percentage of all purchases online not just tackle.

   Tackle 90%

fishing user avatarratherbfishin1 reply :

Probably like 90% in store.  I have a scheels, a tackle shop, and a Walmart all near my house so I do most of my shopping there.  Scheels has pretty much anything I need and they will price match so that’s nice. The tackle shop has other not as popular “new” baits that you don’t generally find in other stores so if scheels doesn’t have a certain lure there’s a pretty good chance I can find it at the tackle shop.  I like seeing the stuff before I buy it to make sure it’s the right thing and I get it right away so I don’t have to wait for shipping.

fishing user avatarburrows reply :

My Walmart always got the same ol crap!

fishing user avatarFishDewd reply :

Less than 1% for me. Maybe like .3%. I love to shop online, but I also hate to wait for stuff to arrive. I try to go out on the water at least once a week weather permitting, and when I find something new that I think could work, and know a local store has it, it kills me to wait a week or more for it to arrive via mail to use it. It's distracting when I go fishing cause all I think about is the thing I could be using but can't cause it's arriving via snail mail sometime the next week. I find that usually when I factor in shipping and everything, it's about the same to buy it somewhere physical- BPS, Cabela's, Dick's, or my local private store Serious Tackle. I'm also the type to look at something in person before I buy it, I've had too many bad experiences buying something online and when it arrived didn't meet my expectations. I don't really buy stuff cause it looks good, I buy them cause I think it can actually work. I watch videos, read reviews, all sorts of stuff. And when I see something I think could really help me out I buy it. Plus I don't mind helping out local stores. The internet is cool and all but it really does put a hurt on local and big box stores. I don't want to evolve to a purely online world, and this is coming from an early millennial!

fishing user avatarBuffdaddy54 reply :

95% . I live 10 min away from a BassPro but they have gotten to be a bunch of bull_hitters as far as I'm concerned. Dicks 10 min away stopped selling fishing gear, and the Walmart 5 min away never has anything I want.

I used to love going to BassPro. Guys were nice and knowledgeable but that has changed, it's gotten to the point where I feel like I'm bothering them when I ask for advice. Shame, you would think local guys would be a wealth of info and willing to help.

fishing user avatarthe reel ess reply :

About 90%. I go to Amazon Prime first and if it's no there, I look to Academy next, both due to the free shipping. Then I look to other sources like TW.

I used to buy a ton of stuff from Amazon, fishing-related and otherwise, but I feel like in the last year or two the prices have been rising so much that even with "free" shipping with Prime, I can usually get the exact same thing off of eBay for less even when I have to pay a separate shipping charge.

I also got sold some very obvious bootleg batteries via Amazon last year, and when I looked around for information about it it seems like a ton of people are having problems like that now that most stuff on Amazon is actually sold and shipped by third-party companies.

Yeah, nothing's really free. But to make it worthwhile to pay shipping to a site like TW, I'd need to order a lot and I rarely do. I haven't gotten anything that seemed counterfeit yet though.

fishing user avatarLonnieP reply :

I buy most of my lures local, I buy all rods and reels online because I get reels a lot cheaper online and nobody around here sells decent rods.

I find it funny that guys admit too doing 75 plus % off there shopping online.  And the. Complain that there “Local” Stores don’t stock anything !!!    We are ruining small business or local business in this country.   Have I bought on-line.   Yes    Do I make a constant practice of it.   No.    I try and support local.   Even if it is Cabela’s , BPS

fishing user avatarMobasser reply :

Only about 20% online. I live about 25 min from a good sporting goods store, and like getting things there. If they don't have it I order online
