You have purchased lures that catch fisherman and not fish....what was it?
If your talking literally "catch fisherman" than it was a Rapala X-Rap... The twist is it caught a fisherman and a bass in the same cast....(the fisherman being myself)
It was a summer afternoon and I hadn't hooked a good bass in a few weeks. After fishing maybe 20 minutes I hooked into a solid 3 pounder. As it got closer to the boat I began to get more excited, as I heaved the fish into the conoe I dropped it and the lure proceeded to go directly in to my thigh. Not only that but the fish was also on the lure still and was flailing like crazy... As my 11 year old sister laughs at me I experience a terrible pain(LOL).
We finally got the fish off the lure and it swam off, we then swam off to the ER because I STILL had this lure in my leg. After waiting about 30 minutes in the hospital we are taken a room. After waiting another 15 minutes a doctor arrives holding a pair of pliers. He goes right ahead and rips it out of my leg...
Wasn't to bad but I wanted to share my story...
Swimming Senko. Can't buy a bite on them.
Spro Baby BBZ-1 I think it scares fish away.
All of them.
Yes, most of the lures I've purchased have failed to catch fish. I do a lot of fishing, but not much catching.
When I was a young lad I was hooked on the banjo minnow, didn't do much for me, that was when I was in a slugo craze and wanted something with more action, lol..

Back of a swim jig! They are killer for many lakes around me.
Takes me a minute to think of a stupid lure I've bought that didn't catch anything but my eye...
Probably the Strike King Sexy Swimmer. Never got a hit on it, but I also only fished it 3 or 4 times before my tackle box was stolen a couple years ago.
The rest of my baits I've caught fish on, but I do have a lot of them that I've found something else I like more and are just collecting dust in a drawer.
For me it's the Rage Tail Smokin' Rooster. When I saw a video of these flappin' and flutterin' underwater I just KNEW I'd catch a ton of bass on these. Well....I haven't gotten anything on them all year long. liked how they looked, but the fish clearly don't.
I have a bunch of lures that dont catch fish, but that is because i rarely fish them. There are 2 baits that i try often and never get bit. One is a good old 10 inch powerbait worm, or any worm for that matter. I could very well be the worst worm fisherman. If i had to choose 50 baits to choose for the rest of my life, a plastic worm wouldnt even be considered. The other bait is the Rage Hog. I catch fish on zoom hogs, but can never get bit on the Rage one. Hard baits id have to go with all prop baits, especially the Devil Horse.
I think that sometimes too much action is a bad thing.
Koppers Live target crankbaits, they look awesome but i can't catch a dam thing on them.
Ribbon tail worms, heard so much hype about them, picked up a couple packs and have yet to get a bite.

Same here.
Hootie
I bought a YoZuri jerkbait because it was a clear prismic reflective cool looking lure. I will never use it, but it looks cool to be on my boat keys, lol.

Yeah don't use it... It won't catch anything
But its soo pretty, lolOn 11/15/2012 at 9:01 AM, central.PA.bass said:Yeah don't use it... It won't catch anything
storm wildeye swimbaits....
Dancin eel
I once bought about 10 really pretty baits from a Wally World bargain bin because the price was cheap. I swear, they really were sexy and they seduced me. But their actions truly stank. I'm now using one as a key chain (hooks removed) and another is affixed to a USB memory stick. The rest were pawned off to friends as additional ballast in their tackle boxes.

One more vote for the swim'n senko. I even got the assortment box.
I even own a couple of Dancin eels. Like new, never been bit.

It drives me up the wall
Spro BBZ shad. Looks great in the water but other than wipers I can't hardly buy a fish on them.
Anything from Strike King
Like Ratherbefishing I was once seduced by the pretty, cheap, knock-off crankbaits at WallyWorld. A whole handful of baits for the price of a good one, how could I go wrong?! I did actually catch a dink or two on one of them. Why I still carry them (and even throw one occasionally) I don't know-just too cheap to throw them away and would feel guilty giving them to anyone else...
Mann's 10" hardnose worms.
Deep diving cranks.... I have everything from the original Normans in their cardboard boxes to Risto Raps to Bomber Flat A's and Crankin' Raps. Never caught a thing on them... I can work with Top Waters, Square Bills, Jerk Baits, Lip-less.... Just not deep divers...
Ive bought about 5 or 6 spinnerbaits since I started fishing this past summer. Got a couple homemade ones from the local bait shop and a couple dollar ones from Wal Mart. Never got a bite on any of them. Not sure if its the bait or just me.

Don't wanna go off topic here but dude, thats messed up. When I was in Boy Scouts they taught us to push the barb the rest of the way through the skin and then clip it off. That way you can pull the rest out without it tearing you up. But I dunno. Maybe yours was in deeper or at a weird angle or something.

Ribbon tail worms are dynamite for me. Have you tried swimming them with a really light weight barely off the bottom? Just enough to get the tail going. Gets me tons of bites.

X2 on that. Thought for sure that thing would catch something. Boy was I wrong. I was happy to lose from a snag.

LOL, my fishing buddy couldnt wait to get a dancing eel.
Sebile Magic swimmer and similar hard jointed swimbaits. I have caught a few fish on them but when I switch to something else I start catching 10x more.
Norman Flat Broke. Hard to keep tuned. I think I accidentally caught something on it once.

I probably shouldn't admit this in public but I bought 3, red, chartreuse, and Shad. Ugggh think they are still around here somewhere.

x2. I bought several in different colors and none of them swam true right out of the package. Never even got so much as a hit or a follow on them either.

Storm wildeye are killers. They probably are not swimming true because you may be reeling them in too fast. I reel them in pretty slowwwww and they work quite well. I catch not only bass with them but many snook and tarpon too. I always have a few packs around in 1/4 and 1/2 oz, the Berkley ones work good too, I see no real difference between the 2 brands.
Dancin Eel, can't buy a bite with them. Finnally took them out this spring on a lighting up my gear mission.
Zara Spook. I catch bass on other "walk the dog" type lures, but on the Spook? Nada.
Any bait in firetiger. Nothing. My "extras" box is full of them. i always thought they'd be good in murky water, but murky, stained, clear, doesn't seem to make a difference. I just don't catch anything on them.
Tom
Oh yeah on those storm swimbaits, they all swim horizontally for me too, not one fish caught, but on the contrary I bought some clearance swimabits called slurpies that swim like champs.
I bought one of those eels on clearance also for 1.79. Not one fish caught.
I never caught any fish on my green live target 65 frog, I did however catch a nice snag i some weeds and it popped off the braid trying to free it.
Storm swimbaits
You guys go ahead and send me your BBZ and BBZ shads. I'll take em.
Same for the swim Senko.
I think the only bait in recent memory I've purchased and done no good on is the Bevy Shad. I hate that thing.
I never had an artificial lure that I didn't catch fish on, given enough time. Good bet I may never have purchased some of the lures others considered to be losers.
I too was duped by the yum dancin eel. It ran sideways at speed and just plain didn't catch fish
For me it was, and always will, be beetle spins. If I had all of the money that I spent on these things over the years I could have bought a new curado. Every year I buy a new beetle spin thinking everyone else catches them, and I should be able too. Never happens.
The only lure that I actually caught a fisherman on was a jig, and I caught myself, lol
Ouch !!! Let me guess, it was snagged - you pulled it free - and it shot back at you, so you put your hand up to protect your face???
Again, Ouch!!!!

lol. You aint doing it right man. Maybe try golf...
Bill Dance is a very good tackle salesman and puts pro in promotional angler!
Bill got me on the sonic battery powered jig and weight kit, can't remember the name? I thought this concept could work for night bass tournaments, spend a lot of time trying it without success. Got me hook, line and sinker with that device!
I agree with you. How can you not catch anything on their baits? Especially the red eye shad?On 11/24/2012 at 6:39 AM, unionman said:lol. You aint doing it right man. Maybe try golf...

You know it!!! Worst of all the hook was pointed in toward the thumb, so it had to come out the way it went in.
power tackle lateral perch...... only thing i get is line twists
red eye shad... YICK Helicopter lure... bought the kit and never got a strike!!!
And the worst one... I'd give em all away if I didn't have to pay shipping on these are the dang discontinued Lucky Craft RC lures.. Haven't had a bite yet on em and paid thru the roof.....
:laugh5: heeeee just kidding on the lucky crafts....
Jigs. I own a thicket of them and bags and bags of grubs, lizards, tubes, and frogs, but other than Senkos, I've caught fewer than five smallies with them, which is weird and wrong, since soft baits are many fishers' best baits. I went fishing with another outdoor writer in September and I had him talk me through a couple bass in about five minutes. After the first few bottom bumps, it wasn't that hard to differentiate a hit and a hard spot, but it also wasn't that fun. I like the visuals of a surface bait and the range of spinners. Still, I'll keep buying soft baits. Sigh.
Crankbaits, even shallow runners don't do to well in the locations I fish. I bought 1 a few days ago, took 2 outings until I caught a fish on it, now I can toss it the garbage with no guilt feeling, keeping intact of never having a lure I didn't catch a fish on.

Don't toss your cranks in the garbage. Send em my way!
The quickest way for me to lose a bait is to tie on a "weedless" jig. I'm convinced they actively seek out every branch and crevace just to hear me swear.

When I get hung up I'll send down a lure knocker (torpedo), or a chain type lure retriever, very very seldom do I loose a hung jig. With the chain retriever the chains seldom snag the hook but it allows my to repeatedly ram the lure by pulling on the retrievers line. Try it, hopefully, you'll keep your jigs.
A few years ago when the Tru Tungsten came out with thier little hard bluegil swimbait, I got 2 of 'em (like $29 a piece), because they looked good, and I was playing around with cranks and trying some new stuff at the time. I couldn't catch a fish on that lure to save my life. One day, I gave one to my fishing partner to try out side by side with me, and he caught a few nice fish, but me..... nothin'. I went back to soft plastics and whooped him. Go figure. I gave both of 'em to my buddy.
Strike King King Shad and 10" power worms.
I must, and embarrassingly, confess I fell for the Banjo Minnow when it originally came out back in the early to mid-90s. I caught precisely one fish on it, a sucker. Still have the kit, sits forlorn on a shelf in a closet.
I had the negative impression of the swim senkos. Could never get them rigged straight enough. Tried 'em on scrounger head jigs, started to catch a few .
I can't think of anything. If I give a bait enough time I'll start catching fish on it. I use to tear it up with chartreuse colored banjo minnows when I was younger.

Well after having sucess lately with lizards and weighted texas rig, I went back and gave them a try this morning. tried a 10" got some taps but not enought to engulf the bait, switched to 6.5" and got one. I think I will keep giving them a try here and there and see what coms of it. looking forward to it.
