What frog should I buy? 2024

fishing user avatarEGbassing reply :

I've been frog fishing a lot recently, but the only frog I have is a booyah pad crasher Jr. I'm looking to upgrade soon, but I can't decide which one to get. Any suggestions? And are the LiveTarget frogs worth it? I fish a medium sized, shallow pond with a small amount of cover.

Yeah, I've heard it's one of the best. And I meant an upgrade in quality to, say, a Spro, or Livetarget.

fishing user avatarDens228 reply :

I have a few Spro, I don't have any Livetarget.  I can tell you in my preference is Booyah over Spro.  So I don't think it's an upgrade to Spro.  Just my opinion though.  I fish frogs  A LOT..........

fishing user avatarJ Francho reply :

The Live Target has more detail, softer rubber, easier to hook up on, but do not last very long.  I don't see any difference between the Spro and Pad Crasher, so save your scoots.  A completely different frog bait I love is a Deps Bassyrisky.  It's not cheap, you really have to swing on the strikes, but it's so weird looking, and works so well when others don't.  You'd have to see a video of their action.  Sort of a frog/jitterbug thing.

That might be true.  I don't notice, but I use a 7-6 XXH/mod fast flipping stick for frogs, not the typical h/x-fast frog rod.

fishing user avatarEGbassing reply :

Thanks for all the replies. :) By the way, has anyone used the River2Sea Spittin' Wa? I'm leaning towards either that, or the pad crasher.

Poppin pad crasher is great, it can be easily walked too.

Yep, the typical 7-03, H/Fast set up for me.

Most frog rods seem like they're designed for casting a frog, not setting the hook and extracting a large, hooked bass from the slop.  I also use a 7-3 H/F in more open water.

Probably why I don't think there's much difference in Spro or Pad Crashers, while others have reported hookup issues with the former.  Spro were my favorite until the Pad Crashers came out.

fishing user avatarsully420 reply :

Pad crasher all day every day and twice on sunday. I think hook up ratio with frogs has far more to do with timing of the Hooksett than it does with rods. I do use the traditional 7 ft 3 in heavy fast action rod I see no reason why a heavier rod wouldn't work just as well especially in heavy slop or padfields.

fishing user avatarJ Francho reply :

^^^That's a good point about timing.  I hear of people waiting to set the hook until they feel the fish.  I use brightly colored frogs, and sometimes put a pink sticker on the back, just so I can see it better.  I hear a slurp, and there's no more frog, I'm setting the hook.  Once in a while I goof up and a frog comes flying back, but mostly I pin the fish, and they stay buttoned.  I learned this through a lot of trial and error.

agreed i dont understand the waiting to set the hook, to me it sounds similar to the 3 tap rule with t-rigs and jigs

fishing user avatarRichF reply :

I'm a Spro guy 100% and I fish a frog A LOT.  I've used pad crashers and they work well.  They haven't lasted as long as my spros though.  Ish's phat frogs are super easy to walk but aren't great for hookups because of their super low profile and small hook gap.  I like my Live Targets too but I wouldn't recommend them over Spros or Booyahs.

fishing user avatarsully420 reply :

I definitely don't count to 3 or anything like that it's just a feeling gained from fishing frogs alot. I had the same problem with punching 1oz weights with strait shank hooks. I seem to do better if i give it a moment before i set.

I think maby the fish dosent have its weight on the bait at the moment of the strike. If that make any sense.

test out the jackall kaera too im a spro frog guy and there are a very close second. They're small but a nice frog for just outside the slop or getting into tight spaces

Thanks for the suggestion.  I've actually been pretty interested in those, just haven't pulled the trigger because I have a Spro stockpile that's gonna last me the next few years.  I had a lot of success last year on the bronzeye jrs early in the season so some smaller profile frogs are more and more intriguing.

The Pad Crasher is darn good and probably one of the best on the market, in this category of lures .

fishing user avatarMassYak85 reply :

I find the pad crashers a little light for their size, but if your rod can cast them well I would just stick with them. The spro's are tougher (thicker "walls") and more durable but IMO the hookups suffer as a result, they also a little heavier and easier to cast because of this.

Is this why I've seen videos of guys bending the hooks out a little so that the hook set isn't quite as dependent on collapsing the body?

Those things have a different walk than any other frog I've used.  It's super wide, almost like a spook. Do you bend the hooks out a little?  I feel like it's almost necessary in order to hook up.

I didn’t have any hook up issues. I didn’t bend the hooks, I just can’t walk it to well.

fishing user avatarboostr reply :

I'm on the Pad Crasher band wagon, but i'm telling you the BPS Kermy is a close second, It's body is soft and walks great just bend the hooks out a little so they don't poke holes in the body. Actually caught my PB on it (pre bent hooks).

Yeah pretty cool.

I have the black gill, green frog and red frog. With the red frog being more orange than what it appears in the TW photo. But I like that.

fishing user avatartcbass reply :

Never had great success with frogs, caught some but not consistently.

Made a homemade Teckel Sprinker frog from a Spro Bronzeye 65 and started killing them. I am making another homemade one this year because I gave that one to a friend but I will try the Booyah Toad Runner since it is a knockoff of the Teckel.

The homemade Teckel was far more consistent at catching fish than a regular frog ever was for me. The tail just does so much.

fishing user avatariceintheveins reply :

Of the regular style frogs, the Livetarget and the Pad Crasher are the best, by far. Go with a natural frog color, a white, and a black, and your set for all conditions.

fishing user avatarLandis Carrier reply :

I'm a big fan of the Bizzbait Pad Daddy. Not a hollow body but I love them!

fishing user avatarthe reel ess reply :

Buy a regular size Pad Crasher and a Popping pad Crasher. In fact, buy two of each. All frogs eventually tear up. You can buy all the brands, but you won't get better than Booyah.

I do that with all my frogs (mostly Booyah, of course). Just bend enough to get some daylight between the hooks and body. I have an older SPRO. It is pretty rigid material. I didn't know if they still were. The same can be said of the Academy H2O frogs. Those are also harder to walk. But they'd probably be fine in vegetation.

fishing user avatarJ Francho reply :

If you're setting the hook right, the frog rotates out of the way of the hook.  All you're doing by bending the hooks is weakening the steel.

My my two favorites are the Spro Bronseye and the Livetarget. Both seem to get great strikes! I'm not going on comment on hookups cause I suck at those and I'm still learning ????

The Lunkerhunt Lunker Frogs are pretty cool and get better hookups then some other frogs but they aren't that durable and I tend to get less strikes

I would not recommend the H2O Xpress frogs that Academy has. They're cheap and IMO they're not even worth the cheap price. They don't walk easy and they fill up with water often. The low price point can Ben tempting but just stick to a quality brand frog

Wondering what people would recommend doing - spending the $10+ on Livetarget frogs, or saving cash and just going with Pad Crashers. Or, going with another frog.

Would you go popping or walking-style? I'm set on color selection.

Thanks,

fishing user avatarBrett's_daddy reply :

I have both Booyah and Live Target. No doubt about it the Live Target frogs LOOK like real frogs...certainly much more than the Booyah. That being said I haven't noticed a terribly huge difference in them good or bad. It's all what you have confidence in, to me the more realistic you can get the better (or at least that's how i justify to myself...other people will think differently). I actually just got a couple of the Booyah Toadrunner's. It's still too cold up here in Vermont to go fishing for bass but i can't wait to try these out and at $10 each they are more economical than the Sprinker frog at $15 each. These will be my weedless Whopper Ploppers :D.

fishing user avatarbasswrangler83 reply :

I fish booyah frogs. The paint job on the top doesn't matter. What color is underneath on nearly every frog? White. That's all they see. Booyas are soft enough to get a good hook set and still very durable. I use poppers on windy days, and crashes on calm days.

My personal favorite is the Live Target in 2 1/4". They hold up well from my experience anyway and the size is perfect and Imo are worth the extra cost.

The Booyah Pad Crasher is definitely the best bang for the buck that I have found though. I usually buy a few LiveTargets and keep a few Pad Crashers and Spros around as backups for when I need them.

fishing user avatarRiazuli reply :

The first frog I really liked was the booyah poppin pad crasher... I moved on to the lunkerhunt popping frog because it looks more natural, but might still buy the booyah...I've tried the new lunkerhunt prop frog, and I'm a fan of that as well - that would be used more in places where you'd use a whopper plopper as it has a trailer hook that is likely to get hung up around vegetation.

fishing user avatarriverbasser reply :

Spro bronzey and pad crashers for me as well. Been checking into the new Stanford frog ad well though, not just because of the frog fur but because of the details on the bottom

Being that all the frog fishers are in this thread and rods have already been mentioned, what rod do y'all recommend for making accurate cast to cover. The average heavy frog rod just doesn't load well enough on a cast for me to pinpoint targets with a high enough percentage. Or is that just me?

I don’t use BBS, but I do throw bells in them. Two or three of the smallest sized bells they sell at craft stores. Doesn’t add anything noticeable to the weight, but it makes a unique sound.

Last summer I was at my local Fleet Farm, and I saw these frogs I haven't seen before. And they were only $3.99. Do I bought 3 of them.

These probably have the best hook-up ratio of all the frogs I've thrown over the years. For the price it's hard to beat. I happened to be at Fleet Farm today and picked up 5 more.
