Looking for the *perfect* jig 2024

fishing user avatarBeetlebz reply :

So I'm hoping you folks can help me out here. I'm looking for do-all jig. I know I know... arky! But it's not that simple. I have a lot of wood and a lot of rocky bottom on my reservoir. The problem is from now until November there's some amount of weeds growth literally everywhere, even if its only a little.

A football jig comes up weed wrapped literally every time. So that's out. I have some and use them for dragging sand and rock but not for flipping.

I tried a missile baits Ike flipout jig. it was ok at everything but it liked to get hung up frequently in brush piles. Less so in rocks but it still got bound up sometimes.

Swim jigs fished like a flipping jig work, come through grass amazing but snagged often on rock and didn't like brush piles.

My favorite jigs to date are the Jewel J-lock flipping jigs that i buy from tackle supply depot. They do grass ok, wood amazingly well, but I still get boxed up sometimes in old submerged rock walls.

Any recommendations for jigs that might fare a little better? I was looking at the siebert ptich'n jigs. Maybe I'll get some to try but I'm open to suggestions.

fishing user avatarNittyGrittyBoy reply :

Rig a creature bait t-rig, 4/0, punch skirt, with pegged round tungsten weight.

Go through grass and round weight will keep from getting hung in the rocks

Well I use the 6th Sense Divine Swim jig for swim jig applications.

get a jig that has the lead poured around the eye like BOSS swim jig or Gary Klein. I prefer a vertical eye b/c imo i comes over/thru weeds and timber better.

fishing user avatarLead Head reply :

Yes! I'm all in on the siebert brush jig. Grid iron version if you use braid, standard version if not. I throw them at everything without any major issue. They aren't perfect, but they are as close to it as I have found. Spend the extra change to get them wire tied.

fishing user avatarBeetlebz reply :

I've decided I'm going to get some siebert jigs to try, support the forum sponsor and all that. If they don't work for me I'll branch out some more.

I think I've figured out the nomenclature for the siebert jigs... the Mata is the thick hybrid skirt. All the other variants use different hooks. So the mustad hook is a lighter gauge I'm guessing and the owner round bend is a heavier gauge based on the braid comment above. I don't fish braid but I do fish heavy hybrid with a heavy rod. Hmm.

Maybe I'll grab a couple this payday to try out. Worst case I don't like them, I can always try other ones or the Oldham jigs.

Hmm. There is the milliken coupon code too. I guess I'm ordering a bunch of different jigs and I'll report back how they compare.

fishing user avatarKP Duty reply :

The Berkley power jig was the perfect jig IMO.  I was really sad when they discontinued it.  I havent seen a jig made since with the rattle built into the head.  And the powerbait skirt was the shizz as well.

fishing user avatarBeetlebz reply :

A decision has been made. I ordered a total of 6 brush jigs from Siebert Outdoors in various configurations. Since my salt water fishing aspirations have been put on hold for a couple weeks (work sucks) I might as well order some toys from 6th sense lures too. That divine jig looms juicy.

I definitely got a few to try, I'll add those to the list!

fishing user avatarJFlynn97 reply :

I've had good experiences with the siebert outdoors dredge dock rocker jig, fished it in rocks, weeds, pitching/flipping docks and cover, definitely worth checking out

fishing user avatarBoomstick reply :

The "perfect jig" is the one that catches bass on any given day. I've probably caught most on Strike King's Tour Grade swim jig or Booyah's Swim'n'jig with the rattle, simply because I can buy them in stores easily and they work. I also like the heavy cover swim jigs with a heavier weed guard, which can serve as grass jigs.

The next jigs I buy will be from Talon. I've heard good things.

fishing user avatarWRB reply :

The *perfect* jig does not exist.

You are better off looking for a jig that has the design Catt posted as it will do 90% of what you want. Jigs with the hook eye at the top of the nose end are all terrian, go through grass, wood and some types of rocks. Rock tend have crevices for the line to get inbetween and the jig head follows the line wedging it between a rock and a hard place. A football style head doesn't wedge inbetween rocks as easily but flips over wood snagging the hook and plows through grass covering it.

Keep in mind the most important feature any jig has is the hook and hooks are not equal.

You are the common denominator when it comes to preventing snagging a jig.

I designed what I believe is the perfect jig for my style of fishing in'71 and it works for me in rocky deep structure lakes with sparse vegetation grass or weeds. I use a more compact jig design similar to what Catt posted for grass and wood.

A 3/8 Arkie in Bluegill color is the closest I've found to perfect. Comes through rock and wood like a champ. Not too bad with grass, but I don't have much of that.

I switched to an arkie shaped head... the missile baits ike flip out jig specifically, doesnt much like the heavy wood brush. I was going to switch to those but they got hung up 5 of 5 flips into a brush pile. Great for grass and ledges, just bad for wood.

That would last about 2 seconds in brush.

fishing user avatarCatt reply :

When it comes to jigs everyone has their own personal repertoire of confusion!

What I look for in a jig is a smooth transition from the line to the eye & around the belly, which requires the eye to be slightly rolled forward. The reasoning is I want my jig to follow the line up to the cover & then slide over or through the cover smoothly. I want a quality brush/weed guard & a quality hook, both are more important to me than head design.

Also look at the gap from the eye to the hook point, the greater that distance the faster & more solid your hookups will be.

fishing user avatarBeetlebz reply :

@Catt so you're saying you would allow for the eye to protrude from the profile a bit to make for a smoother line to lure transition over cover... that's a clever observation that I dont think I would have made.

I'm not sure if I'll do it here or in a new thread but as the new jigs start coming in and I can get them on the water and do my best to compare them head to head.

Siebert's grass jigs are very similar Terry Oldham's Eye-Max.

Notice the smooth transition from the eye & around the bottom of the jig. A lot of jigs have a "bump", "hump", or whatever ya wanna call it right here. In brush it causes the jig to kick up catching anything above it. In grass it gives the grass a place to hang up.

Roadwarrior, how does this jig head fair in lots of vegetation compared to an arky style head?  I also have been looking for a great all around jig, but grass and other sorts of vegetation are probably what I encounter the most here.

fishing user avatarroadwarrior reply :

I think you will like the jig, but vegetation is still messy regardless of which head design you

choose.

fishing user avatarBeetlebz reply :

I just got my brush jigs in from siebert. Hopefully the weather clears up and I can go try them today, but either way I'm happy. The jigs look absolutely amazing. A tall stand up profile with a pointed head and vertical tie... they should come through grass like butter. As for wood and rock, we will find out.

All are 3/8, I ordered two black and blue with wire wraps, one with a rattleband then 2 pb&j with wire wraps and one in native craw with a rattle band. All of them look absolutely dynamite. I can't wait to get on the water with them.

I agree... Similar profile but no line tie or knot exposure.

If I had to pick a jig, the missile ike mini flip in 3/8oz is a nice compact size and usually pops free pretty easy for me if I do get hung up.  It will take a beating, too.

fishing user avatarJason Penn reply :

I have nothing but wood in my area, but the brush jig is what I keep coming back to. I've tried other styles, but the brush just works for me.

fishing user avatarBeetlebz reply :

So first, let me preface this post by saying that I absolutely do intend to order a few eye-max jigs from oldham. I don't mind going online ordering just one or two things but I would feel like a jerk calling up and talking to a live person and making a small order l. In due time lol

I got my siebert brush jigs out today for the first time. For starters, they look amazing. I got the regular old brush jigs in 3/8. They did pretty amazing in wood. I had one hang up but it was in the crotch of a branch, anything would have gotten jammed up. Paddled in and got it free pretty easily. Through grass and reeds I didn't have too many problems. A few times I had some scruff up around the line tie but nothing bad. A quick vertical dunk in the water usually is all it took to clean 'er off. In rock they did better than expected, I'm actually a little surprised. I did have the jig get wedged once and i got it back by paddling in and I got it wedged once bad enough to break off. Guess its a good thing I ordered 3 in that color! A bummer, but I'm certainly not disappointed. I would say all around they did every bit as well as my beloved jewel jigs. The one thing that separates them is the hook. I dont know what it is... the high profile angle when the jig stands up, the just right gap, the just right hook, whatever it is. These things just catch fish. Not once did I have a fish nip at it or grab it and swim off that didn't get a hook in the face. It was like shooting fish in a barrel. I didn't catch any hogs before the bite died off, but I performed some spectacular hooksets (sometimes on fish, sometimes on logs or rocks) but that hook didn't give a bit. I'll be buying more for sure.

I'm still going to play around with some other jigs, namely the eyemax and divine hybrid jig in the near future.

Personally, I have had terrible luck with the Siebert Brush jigs. In fact, I have snagged and lost all of mine that I have purchased. The “dock rocker” jig he makes on the other hand comes through brush like a Dream for me. I have been fishing it a ton in brush and rocks and have only lost one and caught hundreds of bass. The one I lost was because I got snagged on some brush on the way to the ramp at a tournament with only a few minutes remaining and we didn’t have time to drive the boat past where I had cast.

Anyone else experience that the dock rocker jig comes through brush better than the brush jig?
