JACK HAMMER SURPRISE 2024

fishing user avatarHarold Scoggins reply :

I was making a JDM order last night when I ran across these for $13.31, $4.68 cheaper than what they're being sold for here in the states. It's the same bait folks and I added a few to my order.

My shipping was $15, but my total savings on my order was just shy of $65, well worth it IMO. I very seldom purchase JDM tackle in the states, too much of a markup.

fishing user avatartander reply :

The way I figured it, if I buy 3 and pay for shipped, it comes out to $15.34 each. I will wait for 15 or 20% off sale and get them cheaper in US.

That's a great jig skirt color, something about it that they just seem to love.

So basically Z-man made a contract with a foreign maker to create their "chatterbait", then buys it, re-brands it with new packaging, and sells it for $20? Yep. That sounds about right...

Z-man used Evergreen to manufacture the new lure that they patent and Brett Hite helped design it.  There can be different reasons why a company uses an outside manufacturer to make their product and it's not uncommon.

I don't know why some say they are $20 when the retail price is $15.99 and can be found for less.

I was under the impression that Evergreen made the lure for years but it could not be sold in the US due to Z-Man’s patent.  Then in the last year or two Z-Man/Evergreen worked out the licensing so now they can be sold in the US.

This is correct. Evergreen and Brett created the Jackhammer and it was only available outside of the US. Brett won a few tournaments on it. Promoted the heck out of it to the point everybody wanted one and nobody could find them.  Zman paid Evergreen X amount of dollars to slap their name on it and sell in stateside. The only thing Zman about the Jackhammer is the label.

I picked up a pair of Jackhammers, a pair of Elites, and a pair of Project Z chatterbaits to try out.  With maybe a dozen casts on each I honeslty cannot tell the difference between the Jackhammers and the Elites.  The Jackhammer might start up a hair faster but unless they get bit a lot more then the Elites I will not be springing for more Jackhammers.

Just watching some random under water videos, from what I understand the difference is the sound it creates. You're right though about the feel. Most chatterbaits, generally, feel the same when retrieved. Some thump harder or start up quicker or slower. The Jackhammer is essentially the same bait with an upgraded hook, paint, and skirt colors as the old old Phenix Chatterbait and the original RAD ( i think that's what it was called) before Zman purchased the patent. You'll see these pop up from time to time but they're even more expensive than the Jackhammer. Probably more of a nostalgia price tag but it's usually around 25$ each.  I've tried most of the Zman, lots of homemade stuff, some local stuff and I don't know why but the Jackhammer just gets bit more and better. Has to be noise of the blade. They all catch fish though.  The tactical bassing guys did a pretty good video comparing a lot of them. The TW chatterbait custom is a very close replica , according to matt, to the jackhammer but it's just got a smaller hook.

fishing user avatarfishwizzard reply :

@iabass8, Interesting point about the noise, I hadn’t really considered that.  In addition to the 3Z man chatter baits I also tested out the two I’ve been using for the past season or so, the Picasso Shockblade and Sieberts Foggy. All three of the Zman ones started up faster than the other two.  Depending on how next season goes I’d like to try to narrow it down to only two models to keep in my rotation.  The Siebert ones, I assume due to the splitrig and football head, produce a lot more felt vibration and seem to hunt a lot more on even a very slow retreat, so I’m going to keep using them when I want maximum commotion and then settle on one of the others for my other option.

I have not used Mike's Fogy, though I do use his jigs religiously..top notch stuff, but just looking at it I'm going to assume it's identical to the Karu Vibrashock. Used those baits for years and years around here. Awesome bladed jigs. They do indeed hunt but the key to those baits, the ones /w the blade and football head/swivel, is to get them broke in. The blade contacting the head and that sound is why the get bit so well. You want the point where the blade hits the head to be so worn the lead is showing. Hunting is just a bi product (a good one though) of the swivel. It's a pretty unique sound but everything in the water gets hung in that darn connection. They do catch the heck out of em' though.

Yea, they are not ideal for grass, both the connection and the wide head grab so much vegetation but they are some of the best lures in general I have found for riprap dams, they seem to avoid wedging better then most anything else I have tried.  They also became my go-to "chocolate milk" lure, I didn't keep strict track but they seemed to outperform a big willow-bladed spinnerbait almost 2:1 for me in those sadly too common conditions.

Yes, I’m sure. Zman wasnt contracted to make the bait. Evergreen was(might still be) bretts title sponsor and he had his 700$  bladed jig rod and a new bladed jig. Yoy can look back a few years ago after an elite event  bretts bait was the “new thing”. Took him a while but he finally told the media it was his evergreen jackhammer that was only avaialble in japan. It was the same time the zako protype was shown. 6-7 months later evergreen and brett “parterned” with zman and the bait came stateside with the zman logo on the tag.

I've noticed several people talk about the blade hitting the head on chatterbaits/bladed jigs, but I've never seen a design where the blade actually hits the head. Look at these two animations. The one on top shows what would have to happen for the blade to hit the head. The one on the bottom is more like what really happens.

chatterbait-ani.gif.8ea206d64ad1b28ae392cc0c1318a882.gif

If the line eye was on the bottom front of the jig, something like "B" in the illustration below, then the blade could hit the head. I've never seen one like that.

Or maybe I'm missing something really obvious?

Not to be rude but the obvious thing you’re missing is actually using them rather than relying om animation.  blade attached to a split ring attached to a football head.  Blade hits each side of the head when moving.

That head appears to me like it was perhaps altered (filed) in some way rather than being 'worn' by the blade as there's NO  matching wear on the blade ?

No offense taken. The picture doesn't convince me the blade is beating the head when its being retrieved, but it is interesting. I guess what might be happening is the head is coming up and hitting blade if you're fishing it without a trailer.

And I don't doubt it's a great lure. Not at all. I'd love to have one. I love bladed jigs, and I love football jigs, and it looks well built.

Theres some youtube videos on it.  I also just posted a screen grab of a video what the bait looks like when it’s been used for a little while with a trailer .Look for “karu vibrashock” . Its been YEARS since i’ve watched it so I’m not sure if nate even has it uploaded anymore but there was at a time an under water video of the bait showing it as well as him deacribing it. Blade definitely hits the head.   I’m sure the bluebasset fella on here could shine some light on it as well. I’m not affiliated with the company I just know the guy.

Is he Buzbait88? All I saw was some gopro, no underwater. I saw this Jackhammer underwater video though, and in slo-mo, I think I can see what's happening - it's the side-to-side motion of the blade that is hitting the head. That would probably only happen with a football jig.

I'm not sure how you insert a video here, or if it's okay... https://youtu.be/IMCh6s05rj4

Yeah that's him.  I don't think it can happen on anything except a football head.

The ones I have made with a football head definitely make contact with the blade to the head during the retrieve, not to that degree but it happens.
