Late to the party lure 2024

fishing user avatarbassheel reply :

What lure/brand did you start using that most others had already used for a period of time? Hard to admit mine was the Rage line.

fishing user avatarroadwarrior reply :

Chatterbaits

:winter-146:

fishing user avatarscaleface reply :

I still havent used Chatterbaits , Rage lures , Wacky rigs , Alabama rigs , giant swim baits , drop shots , senkos  , cut worms, shakey heads , ned rigs ...  No doubt in my mind that I could fish them all well , I just dont have time to master every lure and technique .  I catch plenty of fish with my old stuff and dated techniques . I did buy some Ribbet Frogs to buzz because that looks like fun . Will try them next year . Still need to figure out which hook to use .

On the other hand there are things I do that others dont , so I dont consider myself behind the times at all .

fishing user avatarroadwarrior reply :

How 'bout indoor plumbing?

I carry dedicated tackle boxes just like everyone else . My most important one is the terminal tackle box . If I want a lure to do something , I make it happen .  Thinking outside the box and solving problems when they arise   bails me out more than offering what others are doing .

Well, I'm just saying on a given day some of the stuff you are not using are game changers. I don't like throwing The Rig, but if you are a tournament fisherman around her (and I am not), you cannot win without it in the early spring and fall. Senkos? No doubt the #1 lure for recreational and local tournament fishermen. The Cut-R can be "magic", too.

fishing user avatarPaul Roberts reply :

"Indoor plumbing" -that's funny! LOL

I really appreciate the creative out-of-the-box approach. It's not only fun but smart too.

That said, I've come to appreciate all the creativity other anglers have brought to the game. Wow, there are so many good tools out there and I've tried to become at least familiar with as many as I have time and $ to put there.

As to my own answer to the OP: Jigs. I believe they are something like 10,000 years old?

Like I said Road warrior . I dont get to fish as often as I'd like. If I could fish weekly that would be a different story .

Well, for the past 19 years I fished with friends that are hardcore live bait fishermen, especially below the Pickwick Dam. My MO was to fish artificials until they caught 10 smallmouth between them. Usually the score would be 10 - 0, but occasionally I picked up a nice fish or two. I'm not giving up live bait. One day last October was the ONLY time an artificial has EVER outfished live bait for me:

i've just never really been a fan of live bait i know it works. there is a friends cottage we go to once a year and all he liikes to do is drift for pike which is just a minnow on a #1 hook and a slip shot. so it's a little boring which i think it's why i like lures so much now

fishing user avatarscaleface reply :

Coincidentally , I just got an email for a heck of a deal on chatterbaits and umbrella rigs and so I have some coming .

I was late on the chatter bait.

fishing user avatarthe reel ess reply :

Craws. I was convinced there weren't any in my local lake because I hadn't seen any. I wouldn't even use craw pattern cranks. Only shad patterns and only worms for soft plastics. Imagine my surprise when I tied on a Bomber crank in craw pattern and caught one on the first day! I fish T-rigged craws now more than worms. I was late to wacky rigging because I thought it was gimmicky-also caught bass the first two times I tried this method. Throw flukes in there too, but I did catch some stripers on them. They're in my rotation now.

I'm late to the jig party and I haven't even gotten to the dropshot, A-rig, chatterbait and a whole host of others.

All of the above including Buzzbaits and Squarebills which I recently picked up and am going to try out this spring.

soft plastics.  5 years ago or so.  Don't ask me why cause I don't know.

fishing user avatarthe reel ess reply :

I also have a fly rod with floating line and an assortment of bass and panfish frogs and poppers that I NEVER use. That just feels to me like trying too hard to put yourself at a disadvantage to the fish.

Chatterbaits for me as well. Thank God I finally picked them up. They've produced so well for me.

fishing user avatarTurtle135 reply :

squarebill crankbaits, my catch rate with them has been poor and I'm pretty sure the problem is that I never actually tie them on, they do look pretty cool when I open up my hardbait plano

Use to think those pre-rigged ,plastic worms were for kids and people who didn't know any better. Guys on my lake kept telling me they work quite well but I would just smile kindly and nod my head. Saw some on clearance at K mart one day, you know the ones, purple with a white stripe, and decided ,what the heck, I'll try them. Good googly moogly, those darn things DO catch fish. Whodathunkit.

My neighborhood grocery store [ remember those ] had the prerigged   red Creme worms with the propeller .. I collected soda bottles { 2 cents each } and paid for one . It killed the bass at a small pond . Thats the worm that introduced me into soft plastic baits .

fishing user avatarcgolf reply :

Bass jigs, won some on Twitter and once I started using them I really liked them and of course now  have a box full. There are a lot of things out there I won't be getting to anytime soon. Tried wacky rig once, and have never gone back to it. To be honest I really think that not having every technique in the boat with me really helps out my fishing, I know the stuff I have well and don't end up tying on something new every 5 minutes hoping it will work

Next year my new I am late to the party baits will be chatter baits and Senkos and Senko like baits.

fishing user avatarPrimus reply :

I was behind the curve regarding the effectiveness of the Kietech Swing Impact as an example that comes to mind .

fishing user avatarHurricane reply :

Never have used a keitech swimbait.. bought a couple packs and can't wait to try them. .

fishing user avatarprimetime reply :

The Creme Midget crawler was my bait of choice as a kid...I never got into wacky rigging until maybe last year, although I always like the senko. I think a wacky rig vs. Texas rig makes it 2 different baits.

With that said, I know the MJ rig was gaining steam, and I like to fish moving baits, so I have started rigging senko's the same way as the Creme midget crawler and it has become very popular for me. It is almost like fishing a soft spy bait....

fishing user avatarRB 77 reply :

Another vote for Chatterbait. Love those things now.

fishing user avatarFishinthefish reply :

Still to this day haven't thrown a chatterbait, plan on doing it at least once this summer.

fishing user avatarhawgenvy reply :

I love the chatter bait! How it's all hairy like a jig, it has that cool fluttery blade, and you can stick on all different kinds of enticing trailers. And, man, you can feel that vibrating action just ajitterin' all the way up the line and through the rod.  I'd bet all that chatter can call over a fish that's a mile away. I always keep a dark blue one and a white/chart. on hand ready for the toss. Now, one of these days, maybe tomorrow, maybe next year, a fish is actually going to bite the darn thing!

I don't know why I quit using the slug-go? When I was a teenager it was my #1 bait and has caught me hundreds of fish.

Exactly . Sometimes there are more choices than needed . We forget great lures and techniques that are just as good now as then , trying to keep pace with everything new that comes along .

Yep, they work just as well then and even more so now...Who's throwing them on your waters now? For the fish, it's something new.

I have way too many hobbies and a summer home that takes up enough disposable income and time. My bass fishing time is limited as it is and if I'm taking the time to go fishing, its for total relaxation. The gear I have work quite nicely thank you very much...:D

There's nothing wrong with getting all the latest and greatest if this is your absolute passion, I have no shame in fishing with inferior gear than the next guy. My priorities are just a little different, no need to defend it, IMO. For me, catching fish on rods and lures I made, make for more satisfaction than any store bought item. I won't lie though, I would love some of the tackle out there now.

fishing user avatarSilas reply :

For me, Pointers and Visions. I found out by googling the "Best bass baits". The pointer was number ONE of about 50 so I bought some. First time I used them I caught about 15 bass while sitting in one place on a Pointer 100 in Sexy Shad.

Next was the chatterbait. Bought a couple of local made  Delta chatterbait in white chartreuse with Little Dipper in Sexy Shad and caught a bunch first try.  Had to acquire a more M/H Rod to cast them so bought a Dobyns DX 744 for them.

Lastly the jig. A local mom and pop tackle store owner said the bass were hitting on a 1/4 Bitsy Bug in Black/blue with a Sapphire Zoom Jr Chunk. Still learning how to pitch it. Bought a Loomis NRX 893 ( because on forums it was highly and rightly touted) to pitch it on.

Just NOW I'm looking at drop shot. Still too unsettled water and weather here to get out. Seems strange because "what's old is new again". I used to fish that rig for catfish and crappie maybe 60 years ago. Didn't realize that I was a GENIUS. We also used the NED RIG to catch bass under docks in False River,Louisiana.

One thing I will NEVER bring to the party is the A Rig. That's called. SEINING in this area.

Distasteful to me!  I know it catches fish. Why not get a Salt Water boat Rod and put 20 baits on what you could call tha AAAA RIG and troll around the lake.

Sorry:. Rant over. Been a tough weekend!LOL

fishing user avatarroadwarrior reply :

Hmm...

Over the years there have been several "game changing" lures. Here are a few off the top of my head: Lucky 13, Jitterbug, Gitzit, Creme Purple Worm, Rapala, Senko and most recently The Rig. You don't need to be the first on the block to buy the "newest & greatest", but once something becomes a recognized "magic lure", it's time to jump on board.

These are a few I would recommend RIGHT NOW: Rage Tail Menace, Cut-R, Structure Bug, Rage Craw, Rage Blade, Senko, Fat Ika, Kut Tail, Kreature, Red Eye Shad, Norman Fat Boy, BPS Tender Tube #71, Sworming Hornet/ LFT Live Magic Shad and of course, The Rig.

Stay with it! Just like any other technique, It can be the most productive technique in the entire lake at times. It is actually so productive out this way that I forced myself to stop fishing it for a hot minute because it became so much of a crutch for me that my other fishing started to suffer. My best advice is to think of fishing it as an exercise in patience. Channel your inner fishing zen. If you fish it, they will bite. Its not a matter of if, just when... I just picked up a new Stradic and some Sniper so its game on again!

hung it on a tree and broke off. And I didn't catch anything that day :P .

I was late to the party on this one too, but only have really fished it a lot by casting and retrieving it in shallow reeds. It does excell there keeping the bait off the bottom out of the gunk. Other then that in deeper water, cranks are just more efficient and I have zeroed on DS, maybe I should try it some more next year on some deeper structure and build some confidence in it by not getting zeroed lol.

Stick with them, they are great baits, have caught many bass on a 5" kalins and some other brands too. They have accounted for fish of all sizes, not just dinks. Great swim jig trailers too. I always carry a Plano guide series 3700 sized double decker box filled with just grubs and tubes wherever I go, the old baits still rule.

Drop shotting. I put a box together with everything I needed a couple of seasons ago, caught a nice bass under tough conditions the first time I tried it, but haven't opened the box since.

fishing user avatarJake the Cake reply :

Chalk another vote up for chatterbaits (still haven't bought/used one) and also learned drop shot this year (although I consider a bobber and minnow the same principle - suspended presentation - just different way to go about it).

More importantly, I just bought my first baitcaster a couple weeks ago (I'm 30) and officially used it for the first time this weekend.  Then I realized trying to learn a baitcaster in 30 degree weather with frozen hands is not the way to go about it.  That setup has been put away for spring time fishing, which is also the amount of time it will take me to undo this bird's nest.
