How many tons of the Red Eye Shad bait do you think Cabelas and BPS are shoveling out the door after KVD's win?
Probably a kin ton of em since this bait won on the classic it MUST be some new kind of "magic bait" or technique. The new idiot bait. :
A lot... I had plans to buy some anyways, and when I ordered yesterday morning, they were only out of one (the one KVD used).. and then yesterday evening I checked again and well over half are sold out
I was actually buying these before KVD won this classic. But to answer the original question yes i think more people will be buying these cranks. Also his poles and the quantum reels. I would too if i didnt know anything about fishing or just starting out. Anyways I was at Gander the other day and was looking through the selection of red eye shad and a guy came up to me and told me that this was the bait KVD used to win the classic lol. I thought it was just funny because he thought i was dumb and didn't know.
yep guys are going crazy over this red eye shad. I really don't see much difference between these lipless crankbaits. I use my red eye shads and my excalibur lipless crankbaits and they both produce a good amount of fish for me. I think like you guys do that these people are idiots for trying to buy so much. Lipless cranks have their time and place.
I've had a tray in my lipless box full of them for a few years. KVD's been winning on them every so often for 4 years or so. I think it's funny he still calls them red eye rattlers,
The problem is some people (not here) just buy any bait that the pros win with so they have tackles boxes full of this stuff... but they toss it for a few weeks or months and don't catch anything... then they think it is junk and toss it aside to replace it with whatever the newest winner was using... I see these people all the time. I have had a few give me their lures before they leave (Bill dance topwater popper was a recent one, various worms and swimbaits).
They never learn to better read the water, the weather, the location, the time of year... and learn that the weather and such matters more than the lures do.

Exactly the point I was making but in a more sarcastic way. I know someone very close to me that is just like that.Got money to burn but don't want to learn how to use the stuff. I've gotten a whole lot of nice stuff that was "junk". ;D
I work for Academy and have been monitering our sales on these hourly.....its unbelievable! Thing is we've had these baits for well over a year or two with fairly moderate sales....but now since KVD mentioned them everyones got to have one. They are good baits and I have caught some nice fish on them, but they are nothing but just another lipless crank. Nothing but pure buisness marketing right there.....they are catching fisherman by the boatloads ;D
I think its funny that everyones making a big deal of this "new hot bait." I had a younger kid 18-20 telling how KVD won the classic on a gold Red Eye and how hes gonna buy some because its a new thing and all. I remember 20 years ago when i was 7, that my dad finally let me use one of his lures in a river that was full of snags. I picked up a gold rattle trap. I caught hundreds of cats, smallies, white bass, and stripers on that bait. I still use it to this day and I still get wierd "you're throwing a gold rattle trap" type looks.
So what color pattern and size Redeye Shad did KVD win the classic on? Gotta get me some of them!!

man i dont know if is me or my lakes i have never caught a fish with any kind of lipless crank ia'm a crank bait casting fool would rather cast a crank than anything else i really have not given them a lot of time but enough to catch a bass i need a lesson
Fact is, KVD is sponsored by Strike King so it's not too likely
that he'll ever tout a Bill Lewis or Aruku Shad ;D
During a typical tournament day, KVD changes rods and lures
more often than three average fishermen. By his own admission,
Kevin said in a recent tournament that nearly every bass
came on a different lure. At the end of the day, it's must be difficult
to say which one lure was responsible for the win.
One thing is for sure, Kevin is peerless...I believe he's part fish.
That reminds me of his win in the 2005 Classic.
He credited his win to the Smithwick RB1200 Rattlin Rogue,
a lure that had been discontinued for several years.
Suddenly the Rattlin Rogue enjoyed a resurgence in popularity but it was short-lived.

I've used Red Eye Shads for about 2-3 months, and I will continue to do so until my stash of 20 (1 buck apiece on clearance runs out). My next hot bait will be whatever winds up on clearance ;D ;D ;D
I was at a KVD seminar today, and was told BPS is moving 8,000 Red Eye Shads per day since last weekend.
He told us how it was fished and the hook modifications that were made.
He is a very nice guy.
QuoteSo what color pattern and size Redeye Shad did KVD win the classic on? Gotta get me some of them!!
Gold Sexy Shad for one, won't be available for at least a month, probably closer to 2-3 months.

I was at BPS yesterday for the start of their sale and it was like a mad rush to the Redeye shads. BPS had them set-up at two different spots, they were selling like hotcakes. A BPS guy was trying to re-stock them out of a plastic bin and guys were reaching in the bin grabbing one, quite a scene. Many was asking about the gold colored one KVD won on. Strike king will make big $$$ off KVD's win.

Companies love sheep , they can be fleeced very easily.
Check out the stock for them at TW, most are backordered
I picked up a few at BPS because I needed a few different colors for sprint fishing. And also BPS has them on sale. Decent crank for a decent price.
Was in the local shop yesterday and he had a bunch of the RedEyes in stock. Picked up a couple more as I only have one and it's getting pretty beat. Trouble is that he's a bit "proud" of his tackle. I normally shop elsewhere, but he was handy, so................
There is one color Red Eye Burley sent me last year, I don't know if it was a limit edition color or what but it was the typical Sexy Shad pattern and it faded out to orange and then white. Sick color that I have caught a lot of fish on. I have never seen it anywhere else.

Don't remember what it was, send me a pic and I can see if I have more of them. Sounds like sunrise Sexy Shad, if so, it's specific to one particular dealer.

Yup, now that you say it, that was it. Love it, it is a great perch/sunfish imitation.

I did, though, recently pick up the 18 karat tennessee shad which is pretty similar, only with a black back instead of blue.
So, I already had quite a few lipless cranks (Spots, Traps, some BPS) but on my last Cabela's order I think of this thread and add a couple genuine Strike King Red Eye Shads (Cabela's web site stated: The bait that won the Bassmaster Classic).
We had snow here last week and some ice on the lake but have a warm spell right now and water temps have come up from 42 degrees a few days ago to 50 degrees today. Time to go fishing. I had a Husky Jerk tied on one of my rods and grab that...then think about it, cut it off and tie on the Red Eye. Hit the lake, 4th cast, bam - nice little 2 pounder - my first fish of 2010.
Magic bait...or coincidence ....................................... probably coincidence ! ;D

I love ya'lls h20 express lipless cranks
All your shad are belong to us.
ya i dont understand what makes this bait sell more then others besides that he won with it. tbh though ive never had much luck with a lipless crank so i just dont use them.
Saturday, three rednecks in a jon boat creep into the small cut I'm fishing. I'm throwing a spot and catching fish in front of them. They start casting all around talking about how they were throwing the Kevin Van Dam bait and were gonna catch the fish :

It amazes me how people actually believe because of one man's success with a product...they actually believe their success rate will sky rocket if they use the very same product. (face palm)

Why is confidence a bad thing?
I have have the red-eyed shad but I still like throwing the Rat-L-Traps.
I have confidence in those old Rats.
There are people who believe that by having a "magic bait" they will all of a sudden become good fisherman without considering the most important part being location, depth and presentation. That said some baits will give you an edge with the Red Eye Sad being one of the best lipless baits available. I've been fishing this bait for a few years and I didn't need to see KVD winning the classic to tell me what I already knew.
QuoteI was at a KVD seminar today, and was told BPS is moving 8,000 Red Eye Shads per day since last weekend. He told us how it was fished and the hook modifications that were made.
What did he say about how he fished it? That's got me curious.

I agree--like the red eye shad but have been throwing "traps" a long time and I think it is the confidence thing
Dang it if I can't catch a thing on those red eye shad. Been throwin' em under appropriate conditions for a couple years now without a fish to show for it.
I've caught the fire out of fish on a half dozen other brands of lipless baits during that time period.
Like my ol' grand daddy use to say, "I must not be holding my mouth right!"

I'm confused. First off, it's not "One Man" it's the guy who's widely known as the single best tourney bass fisherman in the universe.
Secondly, why are you so amazed that people buy a product and have confidence in it, when they see it actually doing something real, like winning the biggest bass fishing tourney there is?
What amazes me is that people buy things like cars because they see some pro driver on a closed track in a commercial, making amazing turns and slides and spins. That's not REAL. These people are never going to get in their new car and do what the pro driver did in the comercial.
Conversely, KVD winning the Bassmasters Classic is REAL. It happened. He beat other guys who were using different lures the "other" companies make and weekend anglers everywhere will be doing the same thing KVD did in the Classic. Fishing.
Not only that, some people got to, and get to fish Bees Wax Creek the day after KVD. I'd say that's incentive enough to go out and buy a couple red eyed Shad. (even though I'm not buying any)
If Skeete Reese had won the BMC on a Lucky Craft lure, and kicked KVD's butt while KVD was using the Red Eyed Shad, why isn't it logical for me, or any other bass fishermen to go out and buy some Lucky Craft lures and throw them with confidence, all the while thinking my success rate will skyrocket?

the enthusiasts will, and do.
For the 2nd highlighted part, I see no problem with confidence, this is more about gullibility, and people put too much thought into their bait selections, and not enough into location. Why did KVD go to the same spot? Because it was a dang good spot. I don't care what bait you're throwing, if there's no fish, you won't catch them. That puts the priority on location. Then you have to factor in what the fish are doing, and pick the appropriate presentation. That's the next big priority. Location, presentation, THEN choose the bait.
I don't care who wins what, who throws what, or anything else. But people that went out and spent a ton of money on a bait that has been out for a long time, because they saw the best angler in the world win a tournament (do you think if he used a different bait he would of lost? Doubt it.) when conditions made the bait selection perfect is plain out gullibility. Certain baits are great in certain locations, and bad in others. But anyone that thinks that KVD wouldn't have done just as well with a rat-l-trap or other similar bait is putting too much importance on the type of bait, instead of simply understanding that he's the best, and would have most likely won anyway.
Although I generally agree with the premise,
"location, location ,location"; we have all had
days when it was about choosing the "right"
lure.
Occasionally, the exact shade of a color
comes into play. To say lure selection was not
an important factor in KVD's win seems preposterous
to me!
:-?

if you're responding to me, what I simply meant was that if he was not in a location that held fish, it wouldn't matter what he tied on, because there was no fish to catch. If there's no fish, you can't catch them, regardless of bait. I don't think anyone can argue that statement in any way, shape or form... That's why location is more important than bait selection in my eyes. If you're scouring the bottom in 20 feet of water, and the fish are suspended 5 feet down, you're again not going to catch them. That's why presentation follows location. You pick the location, you pick the presentation based on what the fish are doing, and THEN you pick the appropriate bait.
KVD was sitting on a bass "hunting trail," or a submerged channel in a creek arm, with a flats area adjacent to it containing stumps. Flats + Stumps + warming water says vibe bait all day to me. He had a spot that was refilling as he caught, and he knew it. Note that he was trying to deflect that bait off the stump, while mentioning the "yo yo" technique, and the flutter of the bait on the fall. The more I watch this on the DVR, the more I think it had to do with location, and specifically, the exact location of each cast.

My Brother-in-law and I have been calling the gold Rattle Trap "Ol' Reliable" since fishing the Lake Champlain Derby years ago. I still keep a couple.

I'm sure we all know a few anglers out there who bought into the season's "hot" new lure and ended the season disappointed in their catch ratio.
It's those types of anglers who doesn't understand location and presentation who gets suckered into the hype. I've fished with some anglers who went crazed with the whole Sexy Shad ordeal and finished the season disappointed in the lure, because they expected to be hauling bass after bass simply because they've seen KVD prove that it was a bass catching lure.
Like someone stated...there's nothing wrong with confidence, we all got confidence in certain lures...but to be chucking around one lure everywhere you go in any type of condition isn't the best way to approach the game. A successful angler knows when to hold/fold'em.
