Fluke Colors........ 2024

fishing user avatarBass Junkie reply :

What do you guys prefer in the way of fluke colors? I have heard just about every color works, but I don't know. I'll be using' them in clear water for the most part, so I was thinkin' baby bass, but would like to know what you guys prefer........... I'll be tossin' them weightless for the most part, maybe with a nail weight for a little deeper waters. But Anyway, what should I get???

fishing user avatarnickw234 reply :

Smokin Shad

fishing user avatarskillet reply :

One of the lakes I fish is REALLY clear (especially for the Mid-South). Have used baby bass and green pumpkin with equal success. Tried some pink (I mean bubblegum) trick worms fished weightless on top. Did real well. Wondered how flukes would do in that color :-/...

Smokin Shad

X2 on smokin shad, or watermelon red or candy

fishing user avatarHammer 4 reply :

Pearl white, and shad works well for so cal....hmmm, that rymed.. ;D

fishing user avatarShimmer reply :

Baby Bass does well for me.

fishing user avatartnhiker44 reply :

I catch 80% of my fluke fish on pearl white. Arkansas shad works well as does watermelon seed. The way I work a fluke I doubt color makes a big difference. I use pearl white so I can see the bait disappear during those brief moments when there is slack in the line.

fishing user avatarspotaholic reply :

White Ice and Pearl are the only 2 colors I fish. Fish them 12 months out of the year.

I agree, those two colors will get it done.

The other exception for me at least is when I am carolina rigging. I use water melon in clearer water and junebug for stained water.

fishing user avatarBankbeater reply :

I've had the most luck with baby bass.

fishing user avatarGangley reply :

Arkansas Shiner

fishing user avatarriverfisher reply :

Bubble Gum and White are the two colors I throw. I have a couple other colors but I always seem to pass them by.

fishing user avatarI.rar reply :

baby bass and watermelon with char. tail.

i do have a pack of white with a char. tail and i havnt cought anything on those. same for the DOA jerk shads (white w/ red tail).  :-?

In my opinion, that's good advice.

"Bubblegum" looks like a flashlight under the water, making it easy to observe every dart and glide of a subsurface lure.

The dubious difference between any two colors will pale by comparsion

to a sloppy presentation versus a well-presented lure.

fishing user avatarRaul reply :

For my Fluke type baits I prefer bright colors that I can see easily. Colors like Baby Bass, White Ice, Glimmer Blue, White Pearl and such is what I use most of the time.

fishing user avatarbroncoboxer reply :

Watermelon seed is my favorite, but I don't put as much stock into color as some.  Presentation is more important IMHO.

fishing user avatarsenko_77 reply :

I fish flukes all year in water with 6-10ft visibility and I like the alternate between smokey joe and baby bass.  I know most people think color doesn't make a difference, but when you have every part of your presentation correct, color can make a huge difference.

Good luck man

fishing user avatar.ghoti. reply :

Baby Bass is #1 for me

fishing user avatarMottfia reply :

I like colors that match the baitfish in that area. Which happens to be alot of the colors already spoken of: shad colors, Watermelon, and baby bass are really good to me.

fishing user avatarBass Junkie reply :

Thanks guys!!! Looks Like I'm gonna pick up around three packages, Baby Bass, Smoky Joe, and Watermelon. I'll go from there. Nice to have plastics as cheap as zooms available so you can get three or for colors no sweat.

You might have a little trouble finding a "smokey joe" fluke

fishing user avatarMovarus reply :

Pearl and Watermelon Seed are my colors.  I keep a bottle of chartreuse dye near bye and add a little color to the tails in murkier waters.

My girlfriend uses bubble gum and has caught plenty of fish.  The dye makes the tail a bright orange.

fishing user avatarjamarkwe reply :

White, albino, white Ice with some JJ's when needed.... You can't beat a White Fluke dipped in JJ's, on a drop shot hooked side ways... 8-)

fishing user avatarmoby bass reply :

Never tried a bubblegum colored fluke.  Who'd athought. Guess I'll give that one a try.

fishing user avatarDan: reply :

I buy three colors: a white or silver, arkansas shiner, and green pumpkin. I pick which one to use based on water clarity.

fishing user avatarDINK WHISPERER reply :

My favorites are White/White Ice, Baby Bass and Albino.

fishing user avatarBenoBreath reply :

Baby Bass all the way !

fishing user avatargrinder reply :

Arkansas Shiner

X2

I fish that color and that color only year round here in S. Florida.

fishing user avatariceintheveins reply :

Pearl White, Baby Bass, Lemon Shad, Watermelon Seed, Arkansas Shiner, and bubblegum.

fishing user avatariceintheveins reply :

Lemon Shad is overlooked and is a great imitator of a small bass.

fishing user avatarMike 12345 reply :

I really like the pearl white color.  Seems quite good on a Carolina Rig.

I've been experimenting with these type baits a lot, and I'm strongly considering leaning more heavily on the fluke, just because you can use it so many different ways, and they are pretty inexpensive as well.

fishing user avatarSWH reply :

how do you retrieve and move the fluke when your fishing it weightless? i have some baby bass but never fished them so i was curious on what you think works best.

"Unweighted" is the only way I'll fish the zoom fluke

Rig the fluke on a 4/0 Gamakatsu Superline hook, and if you're in heavy cover be sure to bury the hook-point in plastic.

An unweighted fluke can be fished numerous ways, but I prefer to keep the fluke between the surface and two feet deep.

This is done by waiting about 3 seconds after splashdown, then imparting a short double-twitch.

A single twitch is okay, but a double-twitch exhibits a side-to-side darting action like a live fish.

Simply repeat the double-twitch and 3-second pause to keep the fluke in the subsurface strike zone.

fishing user avatarSWH reply :

sweet thanks for the advice

fishing user avatarI.rar reply :

ive never fished them weightless. always with a 1/8-3/8 unpegged weight. same method as rolo stated though.

fishing user avatarDanny1991 reply :

I fish stained lakes and really like the watermelon seed color! :(

fishing user avatarBenoBreath reply :

Baby bass & Bait fish work for me !

      BB   :(

fishing user avatarPrimus reply :

I like the Super Fluke in Baby Bass, Baitfish, Smokin Shad, Watermelon & Pearl colors. In addition to fishing weightless and fishing it deadstick with the occasional twitch I also like to use the " Petey rig", which I fish with a 1/16 oz sinker followed by a 10-12" leader making it a short C-rig. This is the method that Peter T used to win a major tournament a couple of years back and it's put a lot of fish in the boat for me.

we've learned that color is pretty much irevelent when it comes to lure selection.  Any post like this, "What's the best color" will turn out 50 different answers.  What does it mean?  Just pick a color and go with it.  The people that sit there and try 100 different colors in a day are just wasting their time.

fishing user avatarBass Junkie reply :

Thanks guys!!! As for the last post (RoLo's), I'm beginning to beleive that more and more. But why do some colors work better than others? Example: pond, both of us throwing torpedos, one gold black, one baby bass. Gold black caught some bluegill and missed a 17" bass. Baby bass killed bluegills, and caught a 21" largemouth and a 17" largemouth, plus a couple smaller. Many of these were spotted and cast to. Fish came up to the gold/ black and turned away. Baby Bass, nadda. Bights 99% of the time. Same line. Why did this happen?

could have been many things.  the first thing I want to point out is that both caught fish.  But could have been presentation, or just the bait looking the right way, or being in the right place at the right time.

99% of soft plastics in my box are the same color.  Majority of the time I outfish the people i'm with.  Why?  Because my biggest concern is presentation, and location of my bait, not the color.  Ever throw the exact same bait, in the same spot, and have someone catch more fish than the other person?  Same example.  Fish are weird.  Just because a fish is there, and you put bait in front of it doesn't mean it will bite.

fishing user avatarBass Junkie reply :

Yeah, fish do tend to be weird. Thanks for the reply. The more I fish, the more I concentrate on the presentation. I think back to when I began fishing and can't believe I caught fish....... My casts/ presentations were AWFULL!!! Ahh, but those are precious ( if you'll excuse the expression) days......

This is the best way I can explain it:

The only color that can possibly catch a bass, is the color that's on the end of your line.

Conversely, every color that is not on the end of your line has zero chance of catching a bass.

As a result, we have more to do with the color that bass are striking than we might imagine...not the bass.

If one angler is catching bass and the other is not, the wise angler will not waste mental energy thinking about color,

but focus on far more important matters such as Lure Depth, Lure Speed, Lure Action, Lure Size, and Line of Retrieve.

I fish only "bubblegum" flukes because it is highly visible, which gives me an edge on presentation.

agree 110%.  people will say "You HAVE to use xxxxx color here, it's killer".  Why is it killer?   Because that's the color that spends the most time in the water.  Most people will get so caught up in color, that they'll try a color for a few minutes, and if they don't get anything, now that color "sucks".  If they DO catch a fish, now that color works and is amazing.  Any time I hear people talk about what color works and what doesn't, I giggle to myself when I go to my box that has maybe 3 colors of soft plastics out of 100's of baits.
