Just got my annual bps catalog in the mail and I get floored by the prices. I'm down to one mom and pop store with the normal online stores that get the majority of my business. I have a bps within an hour which I go maybe twice a year just to put my hands on some things and buy elsewhere. I just cant with bps, most everything is a $1 per bag of plastics more compared to online purchases. Even my mom and pop is cheaper. I was watching this guy buy things in there and I know he could have saved a $100 easy some place else. Any one else just use bps or cabelas just to touch and buy some place else? My pockets are not set up for those two.
The reality is, you're paying for more than just a bag of plastic worms. You have a huge selection of all kinds of outdoor gear/sports. You won't find that stuff in a mom and pop shop. I only physically go to a BPS when I'm buying more than just a couple bags of baits, I roll up with a list of things I know I can't get locally, and want to see in real life, rather than ordering online.
Choice is good, viva free commerce!
I do the exact same thing I go and find all the things I want and then go straight online and save some serious $$$. sometimes just for laughs say I get a new bag of soft plastics I’ll see how much it is at bps and it’s always a dollar or two more. But it’s great to see everything in person before ordering it. Some of their own brand stuff is decent and you can find for good price so sometimes I’ll get some of that.
Sometimes the local purchase is best - supporting the mom n' pop
stores keeps local economy going.
That said, I do go to BPS, but far less often than I used to. They were
always on the full-retail cost end of things, but with their rewards
program, gift cards, there's often a reason to go.
I guess I've refined what I look for over the years. Deals can be found
just not as often as in years past (IMO).
I don't go there unless i need something now and they have it in stock. I also have a BPS rewards card that I use for daycare expenses that gets paid off each month so I get to spend my rewards there as well. They also have some good deals in their spring sale where i load up on things like terminal tackle.
It is nice to put your hands on things that you normally only see online.
BPS lost my business a looonngg time ago.
I have 2 BPS stores about 90 minutes from me and I get to one of them about one time a year. I usually don't have anything specific to buy (though I usually buy something). I go because the sight of all that fishing stuff just makes me giggle like a kid on X-mas morning.
Every year I receive gift cards for BPS from relatives and freinds that know I like to bass fish. The problem is what to buy with them? The closest BPS is over 90 miles away and rarely go there. I usually find something in the catalog to use and invariably the item is back ordered and doesn't arrive for months after it's ordered.
The BPS business model isn't competitive with online competitors who nearly always deliver their produces on time.
Tom
Whenever companies continue to buyout their competition(Ranger,Triton,Cabelas, stratos) I continue to try and support other retailers. BPS has turned into a destination stop, kinda like a tourist trap for shoppers.
I haven't bought anything from basspro since the first year I started bass fishing. Tw, ffo, and another site get most all of my business. Except for some of Dicks flash sales, I'm always falling for those..
I go cuz I like to shop lol, but only buy new stuff mostly hard baits to see the colors. They r never true on most sites and I'm colorblind so I ask my gf what colors r on the bait lol. Stuff I always use gets ordered, but all in all they don't get much of my business. Do wish they carried more high end rods so I could floor bend em and check the action and feel them in hand b4 buying though
BPS is like Disneyland
We are fortunate in Richmond, Virginia as we have BPS, Green Top and Cabela's.
Green Top is less expensive than BPS.
Product selections vary from store to store, with the major manufacturers' products front and center. Green Top has some baits made by locals which are excellent and inexpensive.
For Zoom products, Castaways south of Richmond has an excellent selection. The best by far of any tackle shop in our geographical area.
BPS and all other retailers have the right to price their goods as they see fit, consumers have the right to purchase or not purchase goods and services anywhere they see fit. WHAT A COUNTRY!
Bps is a great place to go during the winter and get ideas and look at a lot of product. I do pick up Bps brand stuff there some worms tube etc. The kids like to go and look makes the trip a little easier
My wife remarks constantly that she is so happy that I will spend hours or even days (depending upon how much we are spending) to find the very best deal (notice I did not say "price"). I will spend a couple hours to save 5 bucks. I will spend weeks to save $1000. What I've noticed is that I have A LOT of friends that WILL NOT do this. They have no interest. They are willing to pay whatever the price is for an easy buying experience. If that makes them happy then good for them. I want the best deal.
I've never been to a bps to buy anything. The closest one is 100 boring miles away and is one of the worst ones I've ever been too. Usually we'd go if we had nothing to do in a Sunday afternoon and wanted some hot wings because there was a buffalo wild wings close by. But I like the scenery and atmosphere and the big fish tank.
I only go if there is a sale on a particular item I'm looking for. It's usually during their big Spring expo, but sometimes something in a flier will get my attention.
The last 3 or 4 times Ive went I dont think I even bought anything..The instore inventory has gotten to be slim pickens...A lot less reels, luckycraft aisle is now about 2' of space thats mainly pointers. Many lines have disappeared. I see no reason to go back honestly unless something in a flier catches my eye.
I can't rember the last time BPS had a sale on rods and reels not store brand. Every so often there might be a rod or reel in the flier, that's about it. I had a reel that wife had purchased from there, lost the receipt and she hadn't given the phone number. I forget the problem with the reel bearings I think. They wouldn't return it. I found the receipt they still wouldn't return it as it was now past 90 days. I had just purchased a large order on their six pay plan. That stuff all went back and I have not stepped in the place since. Now they own Cabelas which I loved to deal with. Their customer service was so good I didn't mind paying a few bucks more.
I broke a rod tip and took it into cabelas the CSR swapped it out for a new one no questions asked. I expected to have to send it off for warranty but they just handled it.
I have a Cabela's and a BPS within an hour's drive of me. I'm still waiting to see what they do with the Cabela's. I do check stuff out and occasionally they have a good deal but I don't go as much as I use to.
Only reason I buy anything at BPS is because I need it today. Otherwise, I go in there so my boys can look at the fish. Sometimes I find something on clearance for a good price, but it's pretty rare that happens.
I have a small local tackle store that is pretty good and he will order anything I want if he can get it. BPS isn't bad...usually out of what I want when I have the time to cruise through there though. My biggest complaint about our BPS is the lighting in the place....wish they would have spent a little more on light bulbs.
I went to BPS 3 times, bought something twice. Seems to be more of a destination attraction to me at best. If I need something specific or unique that I know my local tackle shop doesn't have I'll hop on TW. We have one of those small Cabela's "outposts" or whatever about 15 minutes from me, and aside from taking the kids in there to see the fish tank and mounted game I seem to always leave saying I didn't really find anything I need or that caught my eye.
I don’t think I have ever bought anything directly from a Bass Pro retail store.
When I do buy from BassPro it’s usually because I got a gift card to Bass Pro, I have rewards points or I got a gift card to Target. I will purchase a Bass Pro gift card from Target with my Target gift cards.
When I finally purchase from Bass Pro I do it online and I try to make my orders over and as close to $35 as possible and have it shipped to store. Sometimes I do multiple ~$35 orders at once. When I go pick the items up, I get a $10 Bass Pro gift card for each order.
There is a Bass Pro nearby and our local club meets there so it’s not much out of my way to pick my orders up.
Hmmmmmmmm......I see a pattern. Nobody buys from BPS or buys very little from BPS. Makes me wonder how Johnny is making all that $$??? SOMEBODY is obviously buying BPS merchandise. {{{{insert sarcasm}}}}
Let's face it, y'all are not his target demographic but whoever is, makes him a very wealthy man.
i get the BPS gift cards too and i save them for the March Madness (or the on-line Spring Fling) event where things like Zoom plastics are usually 20-25 % off, just a little bit cheaper than another site. i buy in bulk, on-line. if they pull the plug on this, i’m done. i used to buy my Gamakatsu hooks, in bulk, from them but they have now replaced them with “other” brands at the reduced price. no thanks. i kinda like the rod/reel trade in deals and like to play with the display fish finders when i actually go to the store.

Yup, where a cheeseburger costs you $7, same deal with BPS where a bag of plastics costs you $8 but you could have bought online for $5. It's good to go and see the stuff in person but save your money and purchase it cheaper elsewhere. Of course it helps that my nearest BP is a 2-1/2 hour drive for me plus it's in NH where they have a no lead law which means BPS bait selection is lobotomized by at least 1/3.
"in Richmond, Virginia as we have BPS, Green Top and Cabela's."
We're lucky, but Hopkins in Mechanicsville gets most of my business these days. It's just how it's worked out. Two brothers named Hopkins founded Green Top in 1947 and sold it in '93. Fwiw, it was sold again in 2008 when Charles Thalhimer died. I still like GT better than BP or Cabela's and I used to get hard bound catalogs from Cabela's long before they opened the store here. (My girlfriend buys gifts for me at Cabela's and BP. )
I bought a 1648 Grizzly from BP in '12 and got a 9.9 for $500 off plus 10% off a couple of grand worth of stuff for opening a charge card - got a Maxxum 70, Lowrance Elite 5 whatever it is, and everything I needed to rig the boat except carpet and a spare. It was my first boat and I needed everything. But their stuff is a little high, but that is the price for stocking a lot of stuff.
Oh yeah, Bass Pro and Green Top are both easily seen from I-95 and are close to each other. They stay busy.
John
For a long time BPS got most of my fishing budget each year that is until I discovered TW. Now they haven't gotten an order from me in over 5 years. I have used Cabela's for their bargain cave online for mostly stuff other than fishing though (rod combo I picked up recently is the exception), and the local store will have random markdowns on some stuff if you are patient enough to walk through all the aisles.
A couple of years ago when I priced out like baits between Cabela's, BPS, and TW the difference was eye popping. Cabela's and BPS overall were similar, but TW was much cheaper. These were the standard prices too. I do miss getting the BPS master catalog as it was nice to look through once in a while. I am starting to look at other online stores too, some can't be mentioned, and places like Sieberts for jigs.
I have got a BPS about 20 minutes from my house, go there to look and occasionally buy some things but I wouldn't be too sad if it ever closed.
I live 5 minutes from Cabelas, 15 minutes from Bass pro, 1/2 hour from academy, and 1/2 hour from scheels.
this time of year I spend quite a bit of time at all of them.
While I buy a lot of tackle online,it's still nice to go into a store to see what is new.
They all are similar in price, but carry different selections.

I'm in the same boat. I'll go there during the spring sale /rod and reel trade in. But I usually don't end up buying much because all the good brands and colors are limited or sold out. I'd say more than half the fishing tackle is their brand.
Cabelas is 10 mins from my house. I go once a week just to see whats in the bargain cave. Ever since BPS bought them, its a waste of time.
Before the BPS acquisition, I use to get 15-20% off coupons all the time. Now, nothing.
20+ yrs ago, BPS was the place to go. Prices were good and they had the selection. Now, its a money making operation off our dimes. I do still buy things there but very little.

IMO, his targeted population is the inexperienced fishermen who don't realize they are getting ripped off, people who buy clothing, and non-fishermen buying gifts for fishermen.
I usually get gift cards for my birthday and for Christmas. I’ll go to BPS to see what new merchandise they have but the only time I really buy anything from them is when I am looking for a new rod or reel. I like to hold them before I buy to see how they feel.

The mantra of successful sporting goods retailers is "The enthusiast is not your customer". T-shirts, huge cans of pop corn, house brand merchandise and the like s where the margins and sales are. Having to deal with the bass guys trading in the rusty Zebco 33 and coming in with his (much maligned) gift cards and CC points is just for show.
The 2 closest bps stores to me are 1.5 and 2 hours away, so that limits my trips there to maybe once a year.
The first time I ever went in one (Savannah) I literally could not leave. After 2-3 hours my wife finally asked if we could please leave.
When I go there, I usually get a hat or shirt , maybe a pack of plastics. It's fun to look at all the stuff but I don't buy much.
I'm old fashioned. I can't remember ever ordering anything on line except a pair of boots once.
My local wal mart has almost everything I normally fish with anyway.
If they don't, I treat myself to the great selection at Academy or dsg.
I’ll order bigger purchases from BPS sometimes only because of the 6 pay plan they have. Everything else I order elsewhere or buy local. My closest BPS is 20 minutes from my job and they don’t even stock my favorite fishing line.

The BPS I go to most often has the same problem. I go there to look at colors and the lighting is so poor I usually have to walk the baits over to a window to see the colors.
The BPS store here in MA, is right next door to the famous Fenway Park. Last time I took my son to BPS we shopped around for a bit and bought some stuff. But - on the way out, the game was getting out at the same time! Took me almost an hour to get out of the parking lot! Last time I ever went there.
I do frequent Cabelas (in CT) once or twice a year, usually around March or June, to use up all the gift cards I am given for Xmas, BD and Father's Day. But the prices there are just so much higher than you can get from other online retailers. I cringe when I have to pay over a buck more per bag of whatever there. It's a good place to visit to get a "hands-on" on some major items you are planning to buy; like a sonar, new outboard, or a gun you have in mind. But not a great place to buy unless you are pretty well "heeled".
When did they build a BPS in Boston? You mean I don't have to drive to Foxboro anymore? YAY!

All my bass came on BPS branded baits this past year
The closest BPS to me is an hour away, I go to it 1 or 2 times a year. Typically it will be for a higher end purchase that I want to get my hands on to feel or test. As long as the price is close, I have no problem paying a little more because BPS incurred the cost to have it there for me to do that. I personally would feel a little chintzy if I used their store to test out the goods and then went & purchased it elsewhere.
All other purchases are BPS online (using gift cards & CC points), Tackle Warehouse (for resupplying baits I have used before) or a couple of local stores (for something I want today or a very small purchase). Each of the local stores (Turners, The Longfin or Anglers Marine) are of course limited in their selection, but between the 3, they cover most of what I want.
I bought my first curado bsf 201 from bps online because back then, the closest one was 1000 miles and two states away. Now there is one that opened up a mere 20 minutes away and a Cabelas 40 minutes. I haven’t even visited the bps yet. I probably wouldn’t buy anything if I went into one anyway, because I too much stuff. When that urge comes, I think bottom line... bottom line... I might want it, but I don’t need it. Yeah, it ticks off the bait monkey but oh well. I’m free market so I have no problem what they sell products for, bps or anyone else. Some will buy and some will not and that’s how it should be.

Google Maps still doesn't show one closer than Foxboro.
There's an REI just west of Fenway.
I do 99% of my shopping online due to living in a more rural area. Well that and I’m uncomfortable around more than a handful of people. Honestly I don’t find their selection to be that great due to the fact that I can find anything I want online and still beat their price. I understand they are a major outdoor store but I prefer smaller local places if I’m going to shop in person.

Thanks. I live 10 miles from Fenway. I was Crestliner's chops... I believe he was thinking of Gillette Stadium where the Patriots play, not Fenway.
I live 10 min from BP and I use it for immediate refills on plastics, terminal, or any item I want to implement next trip. Online stores are used for specific/specialty items. I can put 90% of my needs in my hands as soon as I want them. Pair that with my rewards and it is just easier/better than an online order. I bet in the last 3 years I have used 3 or 4 hundred dollars in reward points. I was going to buy those items anyway so points back on it works for me. I have 20 some bucks right now in rewards just from restocking rage baits this winter. BP has double and triple points regularly as well. Sorry other people stores suck but mine is perfect for me. My 3yo daughter loves going with me too.

Theresa BOS not too far from where I live. Somehow I always get the idea that what I want they will have in stock. I somehow end up there once a month and almost always leave empty-handed. They just don't carry the brands I like. I could care less about price. That's probably why I'm broke however so. I remember as a kid or teenager going to tons of tackle shops. Seemed like every lake had a good tackle shop fully stocked. I'm no longer in the midwest so maybe those still exist IDk but in AZ and the west coast in general they few and far between.

I like em, and my 7 year old likes em. We don't have one nearby, but when we go on trips we always stop at the local BPS. Each one is different depending on their location (Dania Beach FL, Orlando FL, Bridgeport CT, Harrisburgh PA, Hanover MD). We usually just buy a couple of bags of plastics or a hat. We did spend over 200 bucks at the Harrisburg PA location for my son We went and outfitted him with his own baitcasting gear, and his own terminal gear and baits (so he doesn't use up all mine) ... He's a BPS fanatic loves it more than Disney World.

I buy casual clothes, hunting stuff, fishing stuff, whatever. If its hip to diss BPS then I sure as heck aint hip. I buy a lot in store, also will buy on line, and pickup in store.
All works for me

You must bank with a Credit Union since banks buy their competition multiple times a year. Its business.
I go to BPS and Cabelas Quite a bit. I buy my guns from them but hardly everany fishing. Their gun department is willing to negotiate prices unlike the rest of their store (BPS) and the Cabelas in my area (haven't looked at guns since merger) were normally low priced anyways. To avid anglers their prices seem high but those prices are what the market bares. As long as their are inexperienced casual fishermen willing to go into BPS and pay those price the prices will continually increase.
I have a Cabela's 30 miles and almost an hour closer than the nearest BPS due to traffic. And there's an Academy 20 miles closer than the Cabela's. Od course, Academy will ship most orders over $25 for free so they get most of my business. But wait! Amazon Prime ships free and usually quicker. So I usually check there first.

If you think about it, Amazon prime doesn't ship free... Don't you pay a yearly service fee? I'll just order from TW and anything over $50 is only $5 for 2 day shipping that still would be less than the Prime service fee for how often I order fishing gear. With Prime you do get weekend service which you don't with TW's 2 day shipping.

Amazon Prime does charge a yearly fee. But the wife already has it so if I don't use it, I'd be throwing money away on services that charge for delivery. We do most of our Christmas shopping with it. It saves us the hassle of the mall and running around before the holidays. Also, when birthdays roll around, we'll go find something we want and put in the cart. Then the other will order it. That way you get what you want. Also, we watch some streaming TV shows and movies on it. The downside to it is you can't find just any and all fishing equipment on it yet, but it's getting better. You also can't buy the store branded merchandise. When I can't find something there, I can usually come up with a $25 min Academy order.

I always think about getting it, and I do order from them several times a year but not where Prime would be worth it, and most sellers have free shipping anyway. I do own the Amazon Store Card though which I use for large orders and can pay it off with no interest.
Even if you make one purchase on amazon prime a month it pretty much pays for itself. 2 day shipping can be expensive. It’s included with prime. Sometimes they have same or next day shipping. You also get access to the music and video. For me it’s a no brainer. 12$ a month. But I rarely purchase fishing related stuff from amazon. I have a kid in college. I can buy her pretty much anything as well as textbooks and have it shipped to the school.

It's funny because even though we heve Prime, the wife, whose idea it was to get it, will say "I need to run (40 miles) to get (fill in the blank)" I'll say "Did you look on Amazon?" We live 20 miles min from the nearest WalMart, Lowes or Home Depot. We live 42 miles from a Target. We don't even have a big chain grocery store here in town. The beer selection sux here! We probably spend less paying the Prime fee. Even if we don't, it's better than running the road to shop.
We do buy regularly from Amazon, but most of the time we are in no particular hurry, so the 5-7 day free shipping option is how we order. I doubt that for the few things we buy from Amazon "associates" with no free shipping available total any more than the Prime fees, so we don't bother with it. Most of the time our Discover Card gets 5% back on Amazon purchases, so we make out okay.
BPS was a lot more fun when I had nothing. Now that I've acquired the majority of what I want and all of what I need, price has gotten to be a more critical factor. I'm after DEALS now and apart from a few sales, BPS just ain't "gettin' it" anymore. It's also why I didn't go to Gander Mountain (may it rest in peace).
For us, the big box outdoors stores are just destinations for entertainment (fish tanks, browsing). Even for more specialized items (e.g. mojo weights), the big guys often have a surprisingly sparse selection, and you are better off just reading up and buying online.
My first big shopping trip after deciding I was going to take up fishing more seriously in 2014 to one of the big outdoors retailers. My total was well north of $150 and I left feeling a bit worried that fishing might not be for me because of the very high cost.
In the years in between, I've learned to shop the sales at other non-specialized big stores for vastly lower prices, and to order online based on the input of others on this site to carefully evaluate which purchases are likely to be worthwhile.
OK... Maybe I am a total goober but I really like Bass Pro Shops and Cabelas. Nowhere else I go has their selection. I have read the folks comment talking about limited selection and I would just ask where are you hoping? I can put my hands on a wide variety of products, see how they feel, evaluate the quality and make an informed purchase decision. That counts for something and based on that I try to reward them with my business. I don't just then go home and then buy from the lowest bidder.
And if, cost is all that matters I do think some of their house brands are some of the best out there. The BPS Sassy Sally is one of my favorite swim baits and I just purchased an Arachnid bait caster from Cabeles that is really a Daiwa Tatula that was $50 cheaper than anywhere I looked.
Just my two cents but I think they all have their place in the market.

I feel the same way. Around here, the local shops are mostly dealing with trout fishing. In Colorado you are a second class fisherman if you don't use a fly rod. Cabela's and Bass Pro do a better job of catering to the rest of us.

So there ARE people who purchase BPS branded stuff! I figured there had to be or they'd pull it off their line.
I've gotten to be a "middle of the road" snob. I don't usually buy "cheap" (too many bad experiences with it) and I refuse to pay an hours wage on the high end stuff. (I hate to be that grown man who cries because he's hung up in 25 feet of water).
