I currently have a shakespeare intrepid spinning reel, which I got around 5 years ago and was probably very cheap. I was looking to upgrade and want to go with a baitcaster. Which would be a good one to go with? I mainly fish lakes rivers and ponds for bass and trout, but I don't want to be limited to that. Dicks has a Citica 200e by Shimano and a Accurist SW baitcaster by Quantum and they both look good for $120 and 100$ respectively. Are these any good or should I order something else offline?
Thanks for all of the help
The Citica is the best available reel for less than $150.
IMO, the Abu Garcia Revo S cannot be beat for the $! It can be had new for under $100 online!

thanks guys. is it worth upgrading from my spinning reel? im not sure if i should get that or waders first hah...or save for a kayak
or buy other gear

Citica over the Accurist.
revo stx at $120. At regular price the citica can't be beat.
Revo S or Ctica. The revo can be found for under $80 new online. The Citica is great too.

so is it worth spending the money on the citica or should i stick with my intrepid? im not sure exactly how crappy the intrepid is, but i have pulled in a few decent sized fish (15-20") on it
or should i spend the money or other gear or waders or something

I must agree this is my first bait caster and its absolutely wonderful. It's easy to learn on and casts very far. Additionally if you read up on everyone who has owned a citica they last forever.
I would highly recommend it if you can afford it as a fantastic starting reel.

the citca is worth the money for sure... but what you need most is for you to decide
I would go with the revo s. They are great, and you can get them new off of ebay from tackle wholesalers for under 100. There was a couple in the lea market forum on here.
Quotethe citca is worth the money for sure... but what you need most is for you to decide
my thought process is...a new reel wouldn't cause me to start catching fish...but i feel perhaps waders would help since i could access more water. hmm
i havent caught any bass over the last several days fishing different spots using spinners, worms, topwater bait and chatterbait. its discouraging but it doesnt stop me from trying. i need to find a better spot! sorry for ranting..
no need to apologize ... ranting is what forums are for... i was just stating that what you need most man is up to you but if you want an opinion on gear this is the place to go... I'm a gear head... I like collecting new gear as much or maybe more as much as fishing lol so... the reel would be an easy choice for me.. but you could be different..
I would pinch pennies for a while to save up for the new curado which is a green citica, or the revo stx that is a dressed up sx model. Go to a national chain that offers a return policy and try everything.
Quotethe new curado which is a green citica,
Boy, you never fail to amuse.

Whoops I forgot it might be more comfy on the hands, a couple of bearings, and it has the same six pin brake the citica has. ;D SOS.
So if I get this reel what line should I get? Remember I only really fish bass trout and panfish, and I might go cat fishing every once in a while.
AND should I keep using my 6.5' shakespeare intrepid rod?
Revo s or stx($120 at TW) or a citica would all be nice. Whatever fits your budget really. I personally can't wait for the Abu Garcia Orra sx to hit stores. Next month I think

you also mention in your post upgrading. In reality you are not upgrading. You are adding to your arsenal. ;D No get the citica and be done with it.

I'm a Shimano guy and I would recommend the Citica, too.

thank you, I trust you more than anyone haha. I'm planning on using your guaranteed bass catching strategy later tonight, I can't wait.
as for my other questions - what type of line and test should I pick up for it, and should I keep my 6.5' shakespeare intrepid rod?
Quotewhat should i get!?!?! for less than 120
In that price range this board is pretty evenly split between the Citica and the Revo S. The Shimano guys are probably a bit more vocal since they had to listen to the pro Revo guys for sometime now. One has a few more bearings than the other and they both have centrifugal brakes. If you can go to a place that has both, check them out and get whichever one you think feels/looks better.
Ignore the retail pricing as they are noticeably cheaper online.

im with muddy on this one...i love my citica but if your not tore between brands and loyal to one then there are quite a few great choices out there, you can hit ebay and find the pflueger summit for cheap and is a badarse reel, any revo is a mint choice, and the daiwa advantage or tierra bc are great as well.but id choose the quantum....KIDDING!!!! unless you want a heavy reel with a flipping switch.
The New Accurist isn't bad and is 8.1oz and only $99.99 on Cabelas site but probably not in yet since its a new model
Hey if you act fast there is a used CURADO on the flea market for 60 bucks!!
It's a She man O , but thats a good deal in your price range

hey burce, what rod you going to use? or are you going to try to use your spinning reels rod?? or do you have another rod for the baitcaster??
i myself just got into baitcaster and my first one is the bps pro qualifier. it is 99.99 and 189.99 for the combo. i have yet had any problems with it rod or reel.
if you get a bait-caster you are going to need a casting rod.your spinning rod will work but i have broken a few spinning rods with bait-casters on them.they are designed different.

Heck no buddy. You can get a brand new in the box daiwa sol or fuego for around $145-155 shipped. Tons of no reserve auctions for these all the time. These are $250 reels we're talkin bout. The sol is all aluminum, not just the frame and the fuego is magnesium!! A new fuego just went for $147 on there, I was at the lake and got home about a half hour late and someone beat my bid by 3 bux to win it > These are even nicer then the curados that sell for 200 bux and blow away the citica for just 30 bux more! My buddy has nothing but curados and I have thrown them, they dont even compare to the sol or the fuego, it's not even fair to compare them infact. If you feel like waiting a week for an auction to complete then be patient and get a pro level reel for cheap. But whatever you do don't waste a dime at any store like dicks or bass pro, they sell everything for retail or right under retail. Been there done that. Just my 2 cents, good luck.

No question Shimanos are great reels but they aren't the only ones.
I got 2 Accurist PT's on sale at BPS earlier this year ($47.00) and they are among my favorites. Seek and ye shall find. I tend to pay attention to what the pros use. Sure they are sponsored but they can choose their sponsors. None of the top 5 finishers at the Classic this year used Shimano. Skeet used Abu, Ike used Daiwa, Snowden and Evers used BPS and McClelland used Quantum. Maybe Shimano doesn't offer sponsorships but if it was me and there was that much money on the line, I'd use my preferred reel, sponsorship or not.

BPS sells a couple different versions of the PQ rods and reels. There's the silver version of the reel that retails for about $100 and the matching PQ rod that goes for about $140, and then there's the "Pro Qualifier LTD" which is a completely different animal. They're typically offered as a combo around the holidays, and imho, is really just a classic case of bait-and-switch.
They know people will recognize the PQ name, see the low price, and jump on the "deal" thinking they're getting a $200+ combo for <$100, but that's not the case. This has been discussed many, many times on the BPS forum.
