round baitcasters 2024

fishing user avatarbasspimple reply :

ive boughtcountless flueger, qauntum and a couple of shimano low profiles over the years, but most of them either i dont like to use or break on me. ive had the same daiwa millionaire since 2002 and it just keeps on ticking. its just a tough little reel and does what i want it to the best. does anyone still use round baitcast reels? not bashing on low profiles, just courious.

fishing user avatarhmongkidBee reply :

I still use round reels.  I only use round reels for saltwater unless I"m fishing some soft plastics with my curado reel.  Anyways I have this really old Quantum Iron IR300 round reel that I just can't let go.  I know it's pretty cheap nowdays but man it still reels in the fish.

fishing user avatarbasspimple reply :

i know it must be somthing sentimental, but even with a 7 year old reel i seem to outcast my pflueger supreme. new reels are nice and i still use em, but i dont think all the new ones are all what they are hyped up to be.

fishing user avatarChrisAW reply :

I use an Abu Garcia round body for my pitch/flipping/frog stick. The bait monkey had me buy it, and I was thinking "Why did I buy this again?" when I walked out of the store. But it ended up working perfectly fine for what I got it.

fishing user avatarbassace reply :

I still use an Abu C3 5500 for crankbaits.

fishing user avatarhmongkidBee reply :

yea I agree with the fact that new reels are causing too much hype.  The main difference I see between old reels and new ones are that new ones can cast lighter lures better, but older reels can far outcast any new reel when using regular weights like 3/8 and up.

fishing user avatarCatt reply :

Shimano Calcutta & Cardiff ;)

fishing user avatarMaico1 reply :

Shimano Conquest, Conquest DC and Calcutta GT

(2) CTE200GT

8-)

fishing user avatarB-Dozer reply :

I have had good luck with Cabelas Prodigy round reel. Casts as good as anything I've used, even light lures, but the rod needs to be matched to lure weight just like any reel.

fishing user avatarcatchnm reply :

My deep diving crank and H20 Xpress swimbait setup is an Abu Garcia 5600 C3  with a Bass Pro 4 1/4" Power Handle added. It's matched with a 7' Bass Pro Tourney Special Med/Hvy rod, IM7 graphite with just the right amount of give in the tip. Casts a mile after I removed the brake shoes from the spool. These reels are easy to open up and clean, real basic build, easy to modify and tune up. I have two 5600C3's and a 4600UC that I use regularly. Got a bunch of LP reels too, but the round reels certainly have their place in the arsenal.

fishing user avatarHooked_On_Bass reply :

I love my Shimano Conquest's.

fishing user avatarsteezy reply :

Ive got a Daiwa Luna (great prices on ebay), haven't really fished with it yet but hope to at the BR Roadtrip.

Ive been reading about the Daiwa Pluton but not yet convinced its worth the price for a reel that would not get much use by me compared to my other reels.

The round reels are battle tanks compared to the low profile reels.

fishing user avatarCrestliner2008 reply :

I have 5 Abu Ambassadeur rounds. Started using them around the mid-60's. Still have the first one I started with too. I've cast many types of lures, along side a lot of folks using much more expensive equipment than I do. I am able to do just about everything they can do, so I guess I'm doing O.K.!  ;)

Best part is, I'll be able to pass these reels down to my grandkids; who will probably pass them down as well.

fishing user avatarSteve1357 reply :

Still using 1980s model 4500 and 5000 Abu Ambassadeurs. Changed out the spool bushings to bearings, huge performance difference. Also pure simplicity when it comes to disassembling them for maintenance.

200 yard spool line capacity on a 5000 the only complaint I have, but 100 yards of backing takes care of that.

Pick you a few more off eBay of the model you like, clean them up, order a few parts, enjoy fishing.

fishing user avatarbear7625 reply :

I have 4 Ambassadeurs. 6500c, 5500c, 2500c, and a 5000 that was my first, bought in 1965. They are all in great shape and I still use them on occasion. ;)

fishing user avatarbarroncooper reply :

I have 14 y/o calcuttas that just will not quit on me.  use the calcutta 200gtb for my frogs.  I dunno it just gives me more confidence yanking through pads with 70 lb samurai on the calcutta than a curado or any other lowprofile.

fishing user avatarOldbritguy reply :

I'm still using the old Abu Garcia 5501C my wife bought for me in 1978. Still casts smoothly and with less overruns than any of my more expensive modern reels. Came in a leather case with tools, manual, lubricant and spare washers, etc. They dont come like that any more. This old reel is built like a jewel, and after 32 years of service is still a joy to use . . . .

Shimano Calcutta & Cardiff Wink

Ditto.

Love the Calcutta and the Cardiff has been very dependable. The Cardiff 100 is really light for a roundy. Also use a 5000 regularly.

Have a couple 5500's, but they don't get out of the box much.

fishing user avatarBassin for Walleye reply :

I'm pretty sure Ike has one for cranking. I believe he almost lost it in the lake once...I have one that came as a $60 combo at walmart that I was skeptical about but seriously, $60 bucks? It actually turned out pretty nice. The rod is a little stiff for what I want it for but it gets the job done.

O RLY?

fishing user avatarNorcalBassin reply :

Still getting a lot of use out of my Cardiff.

fishing user avatarSteve1357 reply :

"Huh

O RLY?"

Yeah, read up on competitive distance casting and see what kind of reels are being used.

They ain't your latest low profile Byzantium poodle reel.

;)

Can your reel free spool for three minutes?

fishing user avatarJavelin200 reply :

2 - Abu's and 2 - old BPS Pro Qualifiers....love em.

fishing user avatarflippin and pitchin reply :

One Pflueger Trion round in the 5.2 to 1 ratio.  Everything else is low profile.  The old Abu 1500c and 2500c were the deal in the late 70's.

You do realize that those distance casting competition reels are far from stock and the weights being used are in excess of 1 oz.

It takes a lot of weight to get a big line-laden spool turning.

fishing user avatarSherlock 60 reply :

I have two Abu C4 Reels and love them.

The C4 5600 is on a 7' MH rod for jigs, frogs and swimbaits, and the C4 6600 is on a 7'6" Muskie MH rod used primarily for bucktails and larger bass swimbaits.

And they outcast my other baitcasting reels.

fishing user avatarkikstand454 reply :

i have one of those old quantum iron's too!!!

its my deep cranking reel. its great and casts forever.

im going to start throwing a quantum 1420 mgc classic, whichis kinda an "inbetween" reel.

also still have a cardiff 100a that is a freaking dream. dont use it that much though cause i dont have the right rod worthy of it yet. lol. its on an old allstar and i use it for "finess" redfishing. lol

fishing user avatarcarrothead reply :

I still use an Ambassadeur 5000 for crankbaits.

fishing user avatarSteve1357 reply :

I have Abu 5000s I changed out the bushings to bearings, I regularly throw 3" and 4" weightless Texas rigged Senko worms using BigGame 10 and 12lb line.

Granted, total weight is .20 ounces, but put a 1/8 jig with skirt on the scales and take a look....

At the least, I'd still throw a round reel because they are more comfortable, and I don't have to worry about the palm plate falling off.

;)

fishing user avatarSwimbaitDave reply :

My favorite reel is the Shimano Calcutta 250 with the 5:1 gear ratio. Its a strong reel to begin with, and with the bushing to bearing upgrade, it makes it even more solid. I have 2 and use them for heavy cover flipping/ pitching and frog fishing.

Dave

fishing user avataroldschoolbasser reply :

I love my "Round Reels"and I use them for everything I throw. For light line, and lures I use my 1500-2500C's,and my 45-4600C's for everything else.

fishing user avatarblackbass reply :

If it's about round reels, you won't get around a Calcutta Conquest or a Daiwa Millionaire. Currently I'm using an I'ze and a Grigio Titanio. They both work beautifully form 1/4 to 1 oz (they would handle even more, but then I prefer a Conquest 200 or a Ryoga 2020).

fishing user avatarChazfromVA reply :

Definitely hard to beat the calcutta!
