"Extremely" satisfied 2024

fishing user avatarThe Rooster reply :

Got my new Bass Pro Shops Extreme in today.  Was outside casting it around and it's so fluid with it's cast and retrieve that it's hard to imagine anything better to fish with.  Now I have two of these things and want two more also. :)

There might be one or two others that handle a little better.

fishing user avatarThe Rooster reply :

I heard that rumor too but I didn't believe it. ;D 8-)

Seriously though, I'm sure there are some nicer reels than the Extreme, but I'll never know about them as long as they keep making these!! :):(  What an awesome reel for way WAY under $100.

fishing user avatarBassboss reply :

Are these you favorite reels?

glad you found a keeper.

Make sure you give them a good Lube and oiling.....All reels should be done when new out of the box. So, I was told.

Especially the Extremes as I found out.  For some reason the main/pinion gears are lacking in sufficient lubricant from the factory.

fishing user avataradclem reply :

Isn't a BPS reel just a Pflueger anyways? Probably explains why I like them both so much. Still like my Shimano's but the BPS higher end reels are really starting to sway me away from the dark side. Especially the JM Elite that I got. ;D

Later, :)

fishing user avatarfish-fighting-illini reply :

I have not fished an Extreme I've only handled them at BPS. It was the smoothest reel I ever handled.

On the same day I tried everything; Revo's , Curado's, Diawas you name it. Either it was just a lucky pick or they are really nice. I will probably bye one ( maybe as a present for my dad ) when they are on sale.

Take the crank side plate off of a Revo STX, a Pflueger Patriarch and a Johnny Morris JMX 10HC and compare them.

Talk about things that make you go hmmmm......   :)

Actually, they are both made in the same factory that manufactures Pinnacle reels and a number of other branded reels. If you compare features, especially the braking systems, you will find a lot of similarities. Most reels made in Korea and China are manufactured under contract in only a few factories, the exceptions being Daiwa and Shimano who own their own facilities.

fishing user avatarhawgchaser reply :

I've been using Extreme gear for many years now. They are the best buy around and the durability has been amazing.

I like many different reels. I have used all of the high end Shimanos and they are fantastic! BUT too me the extreme offers all I need. I have a lakehouse so I get to fish more than most, take several trips to the gulf for specks and redfish every year, go to Lake Fork and Monticello for big bass action, and many other lakes in surrounding states.

The only reason I am writing all of this is bc too many people say it is a good reel for a beginner....or someone that doesn't fish very much. Simply not true....

I can't help but laugh when I see some folks without boats, that fish 10 times a year carrying around a $500+ rig.  Many of the pros use equipment that people on here claim is for beginners.. Absolutely hilarious.

Lastly, don't get me wrong. I am not bashing high dollar gear. There is a lot to be said for the good stuff. But too me, its all about catching fish and the extreme gear has been great to me!

fishing user avatarGrumpy413 reply :

Hawgchaser is so right I have spent some time with the Pro's and I was surprised to see one with a Zebco 33 on his boat, when I asked about it he showed me how he uses it to skip bait under a dock. I was also surprised to see that many of them don't use those high end reels all of the time.

I learned a long time ago that a pro will use what works.. Doubt me just take a look in any golf pros bag and you see that he may not be playing  the same club he is advertising on the bag esp on tournament days. :-/

fishing user avatarThe Rooster reply :

Yes the Extreme baitcaster is my favorite reel!!!! :)

fishing user avatarflechero reply :

Perceived quality and value are things that are different for different people. Most BPS reel reviews are good... but there seem to be very few people that claim positive experiences over several seasons. (at least compared to the other brands)

Since they are also very affordable, buying a replacement in a year or two wouldn't worry me either...  even if you had to buy 3 $80 reels over 5 years, you are no further back than buying a single $250 reel.

As with anything, use what you like and can afford...  because rarely will any nay sayer buy your next reel!  ...lol

fishing user avatarThe Rooster reply :

Well I gotta say after 2 seasons mine is holding up nicely.  I bagged a lot of fish on it in the last couple of years and it's still a solid feeling reel.  It's heading into season 3 coming up and with another one just like it to help share the load this time.  Maybe by time season 3 kicks off there will be a whole team of these things playing hard on my boat!!

fishing user avatarhawgchaser reply :

Ive got 5 or so that are 5 years or older. Not to mention one test that no others could survive. Durability is second to none.

might buy me an extreme this winter. take it out redfishing. i dont have to worry about seasons here. yay!

good testimony hawgchaser. and really nice red! 8-)

fishing user avatarThe Rooster reply :

Yeah I wouldn't have expected to find the Extreme in nearly new condition after that, even though I'm an Extreme fanatic.

That's a cool story!  And with no disrespect meant to any brand, reels aren't usually designed to be buried treasure.  ...lol  I thought when I posted that you are certainly the exception, not the rule... this just verifies it.

fishing user avatarCFFF 1.5 reply :

I have an extreme that is at least 4 years old probably more like 6 I can't remember, and it fishes like the day I bought it. I don't fish everyday, but I usually fish about 40 times a year. I currently have 4 extreme reels, one quantum, and one shimano. The extremes are my favorite reels.

fishing user avatarLong Mike reply :

I have two Extremes and one Pflueger President.  I like all three reels, but the one I pick up the most is the President.  That reel seems to like me better than the others.  Don't ask me why.

fishing user avatarMuddy reply :

I have 3 T Pflueger Trions and on Extreme 100HD, I love all 4 reels. I do prefer the Trions over everything

The Extreme gets a lot of use, over the last 2 years. I am sending it to BPS for a breakdown and Lube. Cost all of 13 bucks, they have a reel center FULL OF PARTS AND DO THE SAME WORK ANYOTHER REEL GUY WOULD DO AND YOU STILL HAVE TO SHIPS THEM

BPS backs the reels So unlike what a lot of the Shimano guys here say , the reel is well made, dependable and serviceable.

fishing user avatarcart7t reply :

After buying and selling used reels for the past 3 years, I can say the typical BPS reel in the Extreme price point and higher, holds together quite well and isn't any more prone to failure than any other reel.

Despite the fact you are forced to go to BPS for service or parts, I've found their parts department very friendly and will bend over backwards to not only get you the parts but make sure you have a reel schematic, for free, if you don't already have one.

Don't worry, as long as they make these Extremes, that's all you'll have to hear me talk about. :)

fishing user avatarflatbass reply :

Just about all my reels are BPS of one kind or another. I have four of the little round chrome reels they used to sell. I've had them at least eight years, no problems. I have two of the Rick Clunn reels that I really like. I have one extreme that I've had five or six years. Last year something broke inside it. I sent it back to BPS for repair. The parts were backordered and it took awhile to get it back but they didn't charge me a penny, even paid the shipping.

fishing user avataradclem reply :

BPS service is excellent.  Is there an Extreme reel Posse?lol

I love my JM Signatures and my Elite.  Especially the colors! ;D

Later, :)

fishing user avatarLand Surveyor13 reply :

Wrap your hand around a Calais DC. Then look at the price tag. But don't drop it. Gently set it down. Because remember if you break it you buy it. And if you find you really want one. Do yourself a favor and venture over to ebay and buy one at a discounted price.

responded to this thread. There aren't that many.

fishing user avatarbigbasshunter reply :

i dont know guys I have 3 reels used all the time one is the BPS extreme, one is a AG revo sx and one is a AG revo stx all on Shimano Cumaras 7'2" and I can out cast the extreme any day with the AG revos, and the 28lbs drag is untouchable by BPS extreme. Also the extremes spool friction knob is too unreliable it has to be adjusted to often for different baits and it is not as easy/user friendly as the revos. The extremes are good quality for their price though!!

Ive had the curados just dont like their braking system with heavy

5/8+oz  lures, to much adjusting!!

Huh?

I have a few Shimanos and I never adjust them. 5/8 oz does not equal "heavy".
