Which Gear Ratio for 10' plus cranking - 5.2:1 or 4.7:1?? 2024

fishing user avatarSherlock 60 reply :

I am going to get a BPS Pro Qualifier reel for medium and deep cranking. Should I get the 4.7:1 gear ratio model or the 5.2:1?

It will be for a MH 7' cranking rod and crankbaits that run 10+ feet (such as the Strike King Series 5 and 6, Norman DD22, Fat Free Shad BD7, etc).

fishing user avatarhmongkidBee reply :

get the 4.7:1 reel.

fishing user avatarSherlock 60 reply :

The Revo Winch has a 5.4:1 ratio, so shouldn't the 5.2:1 PQ be adequate?

fishing user avatarKYntucky Warmouth reply :

5.2 should be fine, I would go for the lower only if you are throwing 16+ for extended periods of time.

fishing user avatarBucketBuster reply :

Honestly, I don't think the 2" in line recovery between the 4.7:1 and 5.2:1 will make a huge difference. I use the Winch all of the time for my deep divers and if I need to slow the lure down, I slow my retrieve. The 5.4:1 gear ratio has been more than adequate for me for every crankbait presentation.

? :-?

again.... the reason for using a lower ratio reel for deep cranking is for torque... not really for speed. you can speed up and slow down a retreive with any reel.

you are going to hate life at the end of the day if you throw a 15'+ crank on a 7.1 reel.

From what I have read in many places on this site the PQ is a fine reel for the money.

My reels are mostly in the $85-$110 range, with the Daiwa Exceler being the cheapest reel I use ($65 range). So far my Shimano(4), ABU Garcia (8), and Daiwa (2) reels have served me very well.

Considering that I will be using the PQ for maybe 10-15% of my fishing, it would be foolish of me to spend much more on a reel for deep cranking.

fishing user avatarK_Mac reply :

In every thread where BPS has come up NewKidInTown has been very clear in his disdain for all things Basspro. Everyone is entitled to their opinion, but you asked about reel speed. The 5.2:1 at 21 IPT would be my choice.

x2, so cast another vote for the 4.7:1

Why is that? I have all BPS Pro lite and PQ after selling my shimanos and quantums and a diawa! I have had them for a long while and have had no problems with any of the reels! They cast just as far as my brand name reels. So maybe you can come down off your high horse and join the rest of us!

Seriously, Ive bought 2 of the BPS PQ reels, still have 1 and they are good reels.  Not anything like my Steez reels but I think they are good value for the $$$.

Yeah, cause they are junk. They are not going to cast a light crankbait. Doesn't pay to buy something that is not going to do what you need it to do. You guys should know better.

The fact that you can compare a BPS reel to a Shimano or Daiwa tells me you don't know much about reels.

What I do know is that the two Pro Qualifier reels I have, and use regularly, are excellent reels, both casting and retrieving.

I also know that you seem to have missed learning how to disagree without be disagreeable. There is no need to be insulting.

One last thing: The original poster asked a specific question about reel speed. He did not ask for your opinion of Basspro reels.

fishing user avatarKoop reply :

PQ's are solid reels, I used them for several years before I upgraded. I still have 1 and it serves its purpose well.

A 5.x:1 ratio reel is fine for deep cranking.

Since we kind of got off track I thought I would re-post the original question. Which should it be for medium to deep divers: 4.7:1 or 5.2:1? :)

fishing user avatarKoop reply :

Get the 5.2:1

fishing user avatarJ Francho reply :

When comparing reels, use inches per turn (IPT), not gear ratios.  Personally, I don't like really slow reels, or super fast reels.  I think my cranking reels are 23 IPT, and that seems to work fine.

Exactly.

Mine is also in the low 20s.

I will be buying a 5.2:1 PQ for deep cranking (hopefully they will go on sale for $80 during the Spring Classic).

Funny, Ive been using baitcasters for around 10 years! I have had a wide variety of curados, few different types of quantums. I had a diawa tda. I like my pq and pro lites better. My pro lites cast 1/4oz cranks just fine! I have never had any problems with them ever! Your ignorance astounds me!

Yeah, but you know what's worse? Drooling so much over that page in the catalog that you can't see the photo of it anymore! Now you can go next month and buy something else you've been dying to get.

You did the right thing.  :)

fishing user avatar5bass reply :

Alright fellas, take a deep breath. We're talking ratio here, not brands.

I separate mid depth crank set-ups and deep crank set-ups. A 5.?:1 ratio is fine for mid depth cranks. If you're really serious about pulling deep divers all day, get the 4.?:1, you wont regret it.

fishing user avatarSherlock 60 reply :

Thanks, everybody.

I didn't mean to get anybody all riled up, but it has been lots of fun following the conversation. Kind of like getting the Ford guys and the Chevy guys going at each other when I was a kid.

Chances are I will not be pulling deep divers all day, so unless somebody else comes up with an extremely compelling argument otherwise I am going to get the 5.2:1 reel.

If you have intentions of throwing a DD22 you may very well appreciate that 4.7. I use a Zillion Crazy Cranker which is 4.9:1 and it is worth every penny when it comes to that type of crank.
