Hey I didnt want to hijack another thread, I was reading the posts in the Steetz Thread. I dont understand the logic of buying the best stuff then worrying about getting it scrathed or the net weight of a HOOK HOLDER?
I take care of my stuff BUT I USE IT, some scars and scrathes are parts of memories of speical trips and specfic fish! I say take care of your equipment BUT USE ITY. I see guys where I fish just riding around showing off all their stuff but hardly see them A. Fishing or B actually catching a fish I DONT GET THAT!
My expensive lures are not going to catch anything stored in the Tbox, the worst thing that could happen is that I loose them, killed in action is a honor.
My reels & rods are tools, I like expensive ones not only beacuse they look good but also beacuse they perform, I don 't run a museum of expensive tackle.. Even though I consider scratches a character mark but I try to avoid as much as I can reels & rods from being scratched, but that 's how I am. My vehicle looks like out of the show room, my rods and reels look out of the box, I find as gratifying to see my stuff looking as new as fishing with it but I do use them.
yeah it goes across all different sports/hobbies- when I raced moto X, the guys that had all the aftermarket stuff and newest graphics and best gear- were never the "real" racers- they were there to be seen hardley ever raced. The real paid pros were usually the only real fast guys with the new gear because they did not have to pay for the expensive stuff. Fishing is a bit different (abviously) it is a lifetime sport- but I know a few guys with $50,000 boats rod a rod locker full of loomis' and they use the gear maybe 4 times a year! I do have a DSR852 spinning rod that I used all year long catching countless fish and consider it my "weapon of choice" if you will- I am not afraid to use it- I take care of it but I would not fish it any differently than I would $20.00 wal mart special- the same goes next year when I pull out my new BSR852 GLX with Fuego 3000 on it- I can't wait to use the hell outa that combo!
I'M WITH YOU MUDDY, I DON'T UNDERSTAND INVESTING ALL THAT MONEY JUST TO BRAG YOU HAVE THE BEST MADE REEL/LURE. IF IT'S THAT GREAT, USE IT!!!
AS YOU SAID, THOSE NICKS AND SCRATCHES ARE PERSONALITY. I'LL ADMIT I'M GUILTY OF WIPING DOWN ALL MY EQUIPMENT EVERY TIME I USE IT, BUT THAT'S WHY IT STILL LOOKS GOOD.
I GUESS IT TAKES ALL KINDS.
FALCON
I try to take care of my equipment also, but there are going to be scratches and nicks. There is no reason to buy higher quality equipment if you aren't going to make use of the advantages provided by that equipment.
Its like when i was growin up and playing drums. I had a beat to death Ludwig 4 piece kit. I kept it up and learned how to do my own repairs. There was one guy in the hood who had a 9 piece Ymaha Sudio kit complete with a big Chinese Gongs. Now I was never the best drummer in the world, but I was good enough to be playing most weekend. This guy was always at my gigs telling me what HE WOULD HAVE PLAYED. Then one night my friend Brad ( guitar player extodiniaire) said to him yea well it seems your always here watchignhim play when are we gonna get to one of your gigs! as they say in Brooklyn CASE CLOSED MOOK! ;D
I like to use my stuff, but keep it nice also. People say all the time that my stuff looks new, and I must not use it. That couldn't be further than the truth. Using rod wrap and reel covers will keep you rods and reels looking new no matter how hard you fish. I do a lot of little things that help as well, like when I hook and land a fish, I still have the mindset to lay my rod down with the reel facing up instead of just tossing it on the deck of the boat. I also use car wax on my rods and reels, but that may seem excessive to some (or most ).
I use'm but take care of them. My rods and reels all have scratches, dings, boat rash, and the TDX is chipped. Dont know how that one happened.
Wow look at all his fancy stuff, it all looks new. I bet he has 100k invested. Whoopede doo
Like Raul said its an honor for an expensive lure to be MIA.
I buy high end for performance not beauty. Its a tool use it for what it was made for.
I didnt buy that new shiny yellow dewalt drill to sit in the case to look at. ;D
Hmmmmmmm............... :-?
At 'work'
In use
Just one more
You should see those rods/reels stacked in the passenger area of my F150........

I fished with a guy who told me not to stand on the compartment lids of his 17'10" Ranger with a 150HP. I said "oh, is it broken" he said "no, but I dont like any extra weight on them". I told him I wasnt going to stand in the back corner of the boat all day.
He also backed his boat into the water. There were no docks out so I stood there holding the boat by a rope scared to pull it too close to the shore where it might "touch" the bottom of his boat. I did have to pull it in somewhat b/c other boats were launching. He finally gets down to the water and his boat is bobbing about 3' from the bank. He flipped out. "Dude, the boat keeps coming down on that rock, watch out for the side, its going to scrape". There was no way I was going to walk into the water up to my knees to prevent his boat from touching something. What was I to do? Horrible...
I maintain my equipment much like a soldier would care for his weapon. I doubt that anyone could tell the difference between my equipment new this year and my nine year old gear. I tend to everything that is exposed and rely on professional care for internal maintainance. My tackle is good to go at all times and I use it whenever possible. Right now would be fine by me!
QuoteI maintain my equipment much like a soldier would care for his weapon.
I believe amyone who had fished with me will tell you I use my equipment but I also take care of it. In the military we had a saying take of you weapon and it will take care of you
I take care of all my fishing equipment so I can use it for years with enjoyment 8-)
I take care of my equipment at all times and maintain all my rods and reels. I also use them and you can't help but get some battle scars but, you don't have to throw them around either.
I dont know, I could never understand seeing guys just drop their outfit on the deck to handled a dink of a bass. Why scratch it all up. Do you drop your kid too? I got to laugh when I watch those fly fishing shows and see the guy dunk his outfit to cuddle a trout thats all of 8" long. Why just suddenly forget your holding an outfit and drop it in frigid water and rocks. Especially when the fly reel has got to be several hundred dollars. Even if the guys sponsor gives it to them, it shows utter disrespect either for yourself or the sponsor.
My reels always stay in a reel cover when not used on the boat, Ive never gotten a scratch one a reel. Ive been able to resell dozens of reels for nearly new prices because they didnt have a scratch and I kept the box, papers and reciept.
Rods are a different matter for me, I wont spend much more than the cost of a St Croix Premier or a Shimano Compre anymore. I just dont see the difference in performance or feel. But I'll spend $200 or $300 for a reel in a heart beat. Did the other post really ponder the weight of the hook Holder??
this iss a good thread i also use it up im tired of hearing in every luckycraft thread theres always some one who says i own one but cant bear to use it buy it use it youll feel a whole lot better
I beat the crap put of my reels. Scratches all over, but open them up and they are sparkling clean inside. I have also been known to put $100+ hardbaits on the rocks at night when fishing a new moon. That unmistakable clack means I need to apply a little more thumb next time . I beat my gear up. To me it is like a hi performance 4X4, make sure all the performance stuff is in top order, but when it comes to cosmetics, who gives a rip? I too do not understand why people blow all kinds of cash on gear and spend more time coddling it than they do fishing it. I spend that money to catch fish, not win ramp pageants.

Oh man! That is good stuff right there! I couldn't agree more. My uncle is the opposite of me...he fishes the Stren Series, and has probably 16-20 Calais reels on Falcon rods. He is sponsored by Falcon, but is not sponsored by Shimano. His reels all have extreme boat rash, and he could care less about how they look; they are simply tools to him. It would be less stressful during tournaments to not care about scratching up my reels, but I will appreciate it when it comes time to resell them .
I beat the snot out of my boat. I fish a flooded reservoir with a ton of standing timber. I get my boat between them and have to push the tree's apart and scrape through them to get to a spot or even just a better cast. I see no reason to have a boat if you wont plow through the tree's, have to pole through some skinny water and bottom out from time to time and clang against the rocks when you have to. To stay out of spots b/c you may scrape your boat or get a ding in it is crazy.
My tackle, well, thats a different story, I do take care of them. My poles get beat up b/c of the rod locker. I bend a lot of "eyes" taking them in and out of the locker, but I simply bend them back, no big deal.
Bbipr8, I totally agree. I'll take my boat into any spot I can get to.
I never really understood these guys who have all the nice stuff, but will never use them, because they are scared of hurting their equipment.
I take care of my equipment, but I use it, use it hard. It may not look perfect, but it works perfect. I buy my equipment to use it and that is what I do "use "it. If it get a nick, or scratch or even broken I don't lose sleep over it.
I'm not rich, nor do I have a sponcer. I Live to fish
When I go fishing with some of my friends. we will get to a spot( probally heavy cover) and they will call it "expensive water" because you might lose a lure in it.
They will never fish it because they are scared. I'll pull up tp it and fish it. Then when I catch more fish than they do, they just don't understnd.
last year at a spring tournament. I pulled up to a point and was casting a Lucky Craft LV and caught 2 nice SM off the point. Then I lost the LV to a Musky. Tied another one on and caught a few more nice Sm. , But I also had about 3 or 4 more fallows by a few Muskies. Caught a nice limit off that point. They guy with me had the same Lv I did, but was scared to use it, because of the Musky. He din't want to lose a $15 lure he said.

Does anybody actually know anybody with expensive stuff that doesn't use it?! I've never even heard of that. BTW...I lost 3 WEC/Zoom crankbaits ($60), and about 12 Lucky Craft crankbaits ($180) last year. This is getting expensive!
Ya see the brush line in the back ground?
That's buck brush; the bank is another 15 to 20 yards beyond that, which is what the bass on Toledo Bend spawn in.
If you don't want your equipment scratched then go home!
The_Natural,
Good point...I have NEVER met anyone with highend equipment that didn't use it, and use it exclusively.
Oh god, I wish you guys can see where I camp and fish a lot. Mauch Chunk Park and Lake. In the summer, Ill give you a prime example. I usually camp in this corner right on the lake because the park rangers let me tie my boat up instead of having to take it back to my mooring. The sites are cleared, there are showers and bathrooms, so its not exactly ruffing it( It save 80 miles of driving if Im there for a few days)
This couple shhow up in an escalde and put up a CABELAS ALASKAN EXPEDTION TENT complet with a super kitchen set up. Then they go where ever in 2 trips come back with 2 very expensive kayaks the 2 equally expensive mountain bikes. Their friends show up with the Brie and Wine and THEY NEVER USED THE KAYAKS OR BIKES not to mention the flyrods
] Well not to be outdone I told Ron now Im gonna show off our stuff So I took our 9 dollar Hibachi , put it on top of my Jeep and rode around with it so all the other campers could *** our gear
This area is what we call 944; again you see the buck brush, along with another problem that can be hard on equipment. I don't worry about either!
Wow you can go fishing there and pick up some shoes and handbags for the missues Christmas Present at the same time. What an excuse to go fishing Im goin shopping for you honey
You want to talk about hard on equipment; you can't see it in the picture but that big dude has my spinner bug in his mouth!
Needless to say I don't think that is what Berkley had in mind when they named their line Big Game.

Well, that doesn 't look like a floating log to me.
