Stupid Mistake Made Me Loose My New Huddleston Deluxe 68... 2024

fishing user avatarfreelancer27 reply :

First day where I can try out my new Huddleston Deluxe. Same day I lost it, due to a stupid mistake..

So, what happened?

I cast, the line on my reel jams for a second, I see the lure flying trough the air, splashing at an area where I could not rescue it. I was literally standing there for 5mins and fighting with myself to start cursing at myself or just letting the hard rain continue to fall on my jacket.

Well, it was totally my fault. I put 40# Gliss Supersmooth Monotex my Lew's and was 'hoping' that it would be enough for a 6" lure. How wrong I was!!! The line/knot could not stand the shock of the sudden stop and off it was. :( :( :(

How can I avoid this happening?  Should I put a leader on the main line? If yes, what type and pound weight? What do I need to watch out next time?

Thanks for your help!

fishing user avatarfisherrw reply :

ive had the same thing happen to me and i was using a full on phenix swimbait rod 7'7 and a big reel and 20 pound test i guess even i was using the right kind of equipment and it still happened... weird.

Don't feel bad - sometimes we just have to learn some of these hard lessons for ourselves.

The line selection advice most often provided by those anglers who fish the larger swimbait regularly (and who may or may not have learned this lesson the same way) is to use a quality 20 - 25 lb monofilament line.

Braid & a leader is not a system I would recommend for larger swimbaits.

Just use mono.

Thanks for your reply!

What would you recommend for such a line? I have ordered last week (since it was on sale):

P-Line CXX X-Tra Strong
Color: Hi-Vis
Line Size: 25 lb
Spool Size: 260 yard

I have not used any of the P-Line however CXX does have a faithful following both here on the BR forum and just about everywhere else.

I've had good results with Berkley Big Game and Maxima Ultragreen Line.

There are a few other decent lines out there as well.

btw - there are a decent number of swimbaiters who do use braided line very successfully.  However, they do usually use something other than the Gliss and often at least 50lb (or higher) test.

I agree with the suggestions to lose the Gliss for swimbaits. That Pline will work just fine but I normally opt for 20lb Big Game. Don't feel too bad though, I recently went through a similar experience, only I caught mine on my Virb. Mine was my fault as well for not checking my knot after just tying my brand new Shine Glide on.

fishing user avatarBig Bait Fishing reply :

use a good co-polymer line , 20 lb. line will be plenty for baits up to 5 oz. braid is not a good choice for swimbaits unless the bait is a top water moving bait like a rat bait , 50 lb. braid minimum but preferably 65 lb. or 80 lb. braid is recommended . some good choices for line are Gamma co-poly , Izorline XXX , maxima ultra green , berkley big game , p-line CXX , & triple fish camo-escent .

17 lb. line - up to 2 oz.

20 lb. line - up to 5 oz.

25 lb. line - up to 8 oz.

30 lb. line up to 12 oz.

fishing user avatardeep reply :

No bliss with gliss, eh?

5 power sb rod/ 300 size reel/ 15-20# (usdm) mono or copoly should serve you well.

fishing user avatargulfcaptain reply :

I fish all mine with 40lb braid and 20-25lb mono (CXX)....#1, learn how to lob the bait.  Snap casting like it is a smaller bait will send it far....unattached of course.  Let the baits weight work for you instead of against you.  Fortunately learning how to lob a live bait up to sometimes a pound helped me easily transition into casting bigger swimbaits.  Sometimes I cast them with a underhand side arm pitch/lob.  But if you try and cast larger baits like you would a 1/2oz crankbait it's not gonna work out too well with braid.  Best to go all mono if you do so you can have some line stretch.

Edit:  Also, look at getting that DVD of Southern Trout Eaters, good advice for swimbaits and btw, even they broke  off a Hudd on a cast on camera.  It happens, just make sure you have another one as a back up.

fishing user avatarPreytorien reply :

I have also had bad problems with large swimbaits and braid. No shock will equate to knot or line failure.

I use Gliss, but only for finesse applications and rarely use more than 5/8oz worth of hardware tied to it

fishing user avatarstkbassn reply :

I don't think you need 20# line for a 6 inch Hudd but you can use anything you feel comfortable with. I use 14#-17# . I've snapped off several Hudds in the past but it was due to me not doing a re-tie often enough. That doesn't sound like the problem you had of course, just bad luck.  I've been using 17# Shooter for Hudds this year and it's worked well, no issues at all. P-Line is another good choice and won't break the bank.

You standing there, after the brake off, looked familiar. But I am sure I stood there for whole 3mins, speechless.

I am gonna user the 25# P-Line CXX X-Tra Strong and see how it goes.  Might be a bit overkill, but lets see.  Really takes a while to figure out the right line (type, brand and weight) for the diffferent techniques out there.. ;)

fishing user avatarJ Francho reply :

P-Line CXX 25 lb.  Problem solved.

fishing user avatarKarsonclowers reply :

Just try lob casting the bait and not tryin to throw it real hard

fishing user avatarBass_Fanatic reply :

Earlier this year I took a hudd 68 out of the packaging. Cut off a c-rig and proceeded to tie on the Hudd. Threw it over the side of the boat and watched the tail kick as it sank. Thought to myself "man that thing looks good". Stood up, picked up my rod, and went to cast only there was no bait tied to it. I tied the Hudd to the leader of my Carolina rig that I had cut off. $25 mistake

fishing user avatarRaul reply :

It´s your problem for fishing with junk line, should have used ----->  Berkley Trilene Big Game 25 lb test.

fishing user avatarblckshirt98 reply :

20-25 mono or fluoro, Big Game or FC Sniper, direct with no leader.

fishing user avatarSam reply :

Been there. Done that. Twice.

fishing user avatarWRB reply :

Big Game is inexpensive line and all I used for decades, 20 lb is heavy enough for 68 Hudds. I use 25 lb Sunline Armilo Defeir Nylon the past few years for all my swimbaits without any issues, would use 30 lb if they made it!

Why use a high vis line?

Tom

Well, I went on a shopping frenzy on basstackledepot and bought the line 260 yard for 7 USD.  I wasnt clear that the high-vis was a bad one.

Should I get something else instead? I mean since Mono/ Copolymer is relatively cheap, I rather spend another 10 bucks and get the right line.

So this HERE would be the best choice?

fishing user avatarcorn-on-the-rob reply :

omg BB, I'm sorry but I laughed sooo hard. That look of defeat and disappointment... We have all been there.

fishing user avatarfreelancer27 reply :

Ok, I bought the Trilene Big Game 25# in 'clear' as well. I think this could be a good line for any top water applications like spooks, open water frogs, whopper plopper. Anythings that I need to be aware of with that type of line?

What knots do you use?

Palomar. I wouldn't use it for frogs but that doesn't mean you can't (I couldn't throw a frog on my swimbait rod anyways).

I was so pumped to get that bait man. I went straight to that spot because I've caught so many big fish on swimbaits before. 10 cast in, BAM! There she is! Moving her away from the rocks when she jumped and Snap! Maybe 5 minutes of on the water time with it before it was gone along with one of the biggest fish I've hooked this year. I only fished for a couple more hours because I just wasn't feeling it anymore after I lost the bait that I'd gone out there to fish with. That along with the fact that I tried to cut my finger off was just icing on the cake.

fishing user avatarWRB reply :

Palomar knot is good for hooks and clips, use the Trilene knot with mono for big lures like a swimbait.

Tom

fishing user avatarRaul reply :

I´ve tied the Trilene knot for so long that actually I can´t even remember when I started, that´s my lure knot, for single hooks it´s a Palomar.

I feel you!

What did you do? Did you order new ones? When I get into this kind of situations, I feel stupid, sad and angry for a while, but eventually end up order new stuff... Go figure.
