Question For Shimano Guys? Cumara Or Crucial? 2025

fishing user avatarDramer77 reply :

I'm thinking about picking up a new chronarch ci4 and a rod to go with it.. Looking at a 7'2" worm n jig rod... Is the cumara really worth the extra dough VS the crucial? Money isn't really an issue just looking for an honest opinion

fishing user avatarlmbfisherman reply :

Yes it is, although I don't own the newer Cumara.  The previous version Cumara was definitely worth the extra money over the Crucial, even against the newer Crucial.  If you can find the previous version it will be about the same price as a Crucial that is if you can find one.  I just am not ready to get rid of my old Cumaras for the newer ones just yet.   I do hear they are more sensitive than the previous versions, but I hear it's a love hate thing with the handle/seat.

Thanks, I've tried searching for info on this but can't seem to find much on the newer ones. Sensitive is really what I'm after.. I don't think anyone really stocks these around me that I could check them out..

I am sure Hooligan stated they are good rods, maybe shoot him a message.  (Pretty sure it was him)  Also if you go to the other forum (TT) they have some reviews there too.

fishing user avatarHogsticker reply :

The previous black Cumaras are much better balanced than the current Crucials, although some of the Crucial models balance better than others. I can't speak for the new Cumaras.

fishing user avatarDramer77 reply :

I have heard that.. But I'm not really looking to go used

fishing user avatarmjseverson24 reply :

I would definately get the new cumara if you dont mind the money increase, the HM1 blank is pretty sweet, the reel seat in my opinion is also very nice, I wish the crucial and compre had the same designed handle. That being said the crucial is an awesome rod as well.

fishing user avatardam0007 reply :

IMO the new crucials are last gen cumaras. Haven't tried the new cumaras but I bet like all shimanos they are probably tip heavy.

fishing user avatarWar Eagle 44 reply :

I have one new Cumara and one new Crucial, in my opinion they are definitely worth the difference in price. Sensitivity is very good with the Cumara A's, I believe they are approaching GLX level.

fishing user avatarCgrinder reply :

I have not noticed any real tip heaviness on my Cumara A. I have a Chronarch 51E on a 6'8" MF and it is a very nice combo. I would say for certain that the price increase is worth it.

However the Crucials are very good rods as well. Nothing against them; I just really like my Cumara. They fish a little heavier than the lure ratings I would say. My M is rated 1/8-1/4 oz and I don't have any problems with a 1/4 oz jig and plastic.

fishing user avatarDrewski73 reply :

I really liked the red cumaras Ive owned. Unfortunately I found DX's and have sold all my cumaras and bought Dobyns. At that price point I think there are better rods FOR ME. But I think the cumaras are nice rods.

The current cumaras are a better rod than current crucials. Ive owned both at the same time. Whether its $120 better is up to your wallet.

fishing user avatarKevO reply :

I have both and love both of them.  For jigs and worms the cumara wins hands down.  I like my 7' MH crucial for spinnerbaits, blades, and soft swimbaits.  I think its better for moving baits, but its plenty sensitive for jigs.

fishing user avatarBanned-99884 reply :

Get a dobyns champion or a DX. Personally I think the balance really well and are super sensitive. Maybe go and try one out at a local tackle shop.

fishing user avatarDramer77 reply :

I had a Dobyns savvy micro, it was ok... But I hear the champions are a lot nicer

fishing user avatarjimjonesey reply :

i have the 72mhxf Cumara A with a chronarch ci4+ and definitely do not regret it. the crucials get a little tip heavy so you may want a chronarch e to balance that out the crucial bit better. the crucials have more double foot guides so it weighs them more compared to the kr guides on the new cumara. if you were throwing spinnerbaits or other reactions baits i would tell you to go with the crucial it is lower modulus so would probably take that particular style of abuse better and you dont need as much feel for those techniques. the 72mhxf is plenty powerful and durable at the end of last season i didnt have any fluro and was using 50lb braid flipping and throwing frogs just to see what it could do. it is really sensitive and i actually like the reel seat it feels right with the ci4+. i have a glx 853 i use for lighter trigs and it isnt quite that but the cumara a is more sensitivity than most probably need the feel is fantastic. it definitely more sensitive than the st croix legend tournament which i would rate higher than the crucials.

You're 100% incorrect on both accounts.

The rods share the same strain of graphite, nothing else.  Different guides, different resins, different tapers.  Shimano rods tip heavy?  First time I've ever heard that in regards to any of the Crucial or Cumara series.

Is the upgrade worth it?  Yes, without a doubt.  There's a huge difference between the rods.

fishing user avatarDramer77 reply :

Well I ordered a chronarch ci4 HG today and a 7'2" cumara mh/f worm an jig rod from TW ... Should be here Monday

I said in my opinion. Regardless of components, to me the mh/f performed and felt identical on the NEW crucial and OLDER Cumara. And yes just about every shimano rod that has been on the market is tip heavy. My medium light Cumara drop shot rod is excessively tip heavy as we'll. It's something they are notorious for. As far as the new cumaras I have zero experience with them. Are they great rods, hell yeah! Just like everything in the world some things have flaws.

I'm jealous! Congrats bro, give us a review after you fish them. Haven't seen any reviews with the two of those paired together.
fishing user avatarDramer77 reply :

It's funny this is the combo I was thinking about, and yesterday I was watching facts of fishing with Dave mercer and the episode was on pond fishing ... He used that exact combo and actually caught most his fish on it lol

That's fine, but your opinion is wrong.  There's no ifs ands or buts about it.  The two are so significantly different that it would be considered a complete error to let that "opinion" be treated as truth.

In regards to the tip heavy comment, like I said, you're about the only person I've ever heard say that.  They're certainly not notorious for it.  If you've no experience with the new Cumara, how is it that they're still great rods?

significantly different? It's the same blank, reel seat is virtually the same, only difference is the guides. So you obviously haven't fished the new Crucial and old Cumara side by side. Another person in this thread stated they're tip heavy. And by great rods I meant all of Shimanos rods in general. So we can just agree to disagree.

I'll x3 that about the tip heavy. I have black 7'6" ML reaction cumara, 7' clarus MH F and yes to me their on the tip heavy side with 50E, Core, Helios reels.

Significantly different, yes.  Completely different resings.  They're not the same blank at all.  They have different tapers, as well.  The weight of the rods is vastly different, even if you take the guides off.  The strain rate of the graphite is the same, but that's where the similarity ends.  Reel seat is very different, as well.  Hidden Up locking versus a down locking exposed thread- huge difference in where it sits in hand, and where you contact the blank when palming the reel.

And yes, yes I have fished them side by side.  Too many times to count.

I agree with everything within this post.  I have the same experience, I own the newer Crucials and the old Cumara and there is a definite difference in weight, feel and overall quality.  The performance is also different.
