If you had a budget of "only" $500 for a rod and complementing real what would you pick and why?
I just want to pose this question because I love to read the responses. I enjoy seeing all the different views and opinions from avid angler to weekend warrior. Who knows, maybe someone will see something that will just make them think or helps them make a decision.
Easy a Metanium MGL and a Shimano Zodias Medium Fast for an all around combo.
Wow, $500!?!? I don't even know where to start! Probably a lews team pro reel, I've only looked at them in passing due to the price. For the rod I don't know, I haven't even begun to research rods that will finish off that budget!
I already have that combo .... several times, GLoomis CR/MBR 723/4/783/4 IMX + Shimano Chronarch 50 Mg/Scorpion 1000 Mg/Daiwa Alphas Type F/Itö.

only 500 i can barely find a decent reel for that much. i would get a sv103 from tw and pair it with a Dobyns Sierra Series Casting Rod 7'3" Heavy and some 50 lb suffix 832.
Going by retail prices.
Chronarch MGL
St. Croix Avid
Going by what can be had with some searching
Metanium
Dobyns Champion

Man I thought I was really living with my lews lfs and fenwick hmg
A St.Croix Avid x and a Shimano or Daiwa reel under $300. Take your pic on the reel. If the rod was more important for like bottom baits, I would get a LTB and a Curado 70.
Dobyns Champ Extreme HP + Curado 200I HG
I would try something new and grab a 7ft something Irod Air and the new lews reel. It would be crazy light and so much fun to fish.
Can I keep the change? If yes I'd pick up another BPS carbonlite rod and reel (while on sale). If not, I have no idea.
Dave
Edited by dwardmbaI put much more importance on the rod than the reel.
I'd get a Loomis NRX and put a used Curado E on it.
Mike
a new chronarch mgl and a dobyns to fill the rest of the budget or a g loomis. If its an order from tw. If I can shop around then an Aldebaran since I ordered a metanium
Gloomis IMX MBR 6'6" or 7'0" MBR in medium heavy and curado 70 or chronarch MGL Paired with some tatsu.
Dobyns DX704C and a Team Lews LS reel.
Probably more than I will ever spend, but a nice daydream!
Best Option: Shakespeare Spiderman Rod/Reel Kit !
On the Serious Side:
St. Croix Legend Tournament Spin Rod 6'10" Medium ($260)
Shimano Stradic Ci4+ Spinning Reel (2500) ($229.99
Total: $489 <--- Paid by the Forum Members
I'd be torn between either going high end on both, or going for an even better rod. I fish a TON of "finesse" stuff for river smallies: 2.5" tubes, 4"-5" grubs, 4" wacky rigs, etc, so a sensitive rod is a must.
I'd have to think long and hard to decide between:
-610mlxf St Croix Legend Tournament Bass paired with a Shimano Stradic FK 2500. This is my best current setup actually. ($460)
Or....
-7mf St Croix Legend Xtreme paired with a new Shimano NASCI 2500. ($490)
It's a tough call for me haha
2017 scorpion dc and a kistler klx.
Id take a lews mach 2 combo and spend the rest on my kid
Extreme 742sf HP and Diawa Procyon 2500

Spinning or casting?
Sorry... thats just not enough $$$ for a really good rod and reel.
Try $700.00 and get ONE of the GOOD rods and reels instead of 2 or 3 cheapo's!!
Just about any of the latest ultralight weight casting reels that have 10+ bearings and the top of the line Loomis,Dobyns, Abu, Denali, PT, or some of the great Japanese rods.
Lol @5keepers
Wow

My grandson has outfished me 30 to 0 on that very combo on more than one occasion.
Used 1st gen Daiwa Steez
$200-250
Used Megabass Orochi XX
$200-250
Steez xt mh/f with scorpion xt1000. You won't find a sexier combo regardless of price.
St. Croix LTB + Lew's TP.
7'1 MF St.Croix LTB
7.3:1 Tatula SV/30# PP
A really nice all around setup that comes in at mere 11.2 oz.
Lots of love for the LTB on here. Gotta love it!
St Croix Legend Elite 68MXF Spinning and a 30 sized Pflueger Supreme.
Phenix UMBX 707ML with a Lew's Team Lite 7.1:1.
I would build myself a 7 foot casting rod, either a MHX,Phenix,Rainshadow blank.with a new Morrum 1600. that way I get the rod just right for me.
My current best combo cost me 470$ , new Favorite Rods Big Sexy 7' H and a used 08 Metanium Mg D7
A few months ago I happened to have a $510 mileage reimbursement check from work buring a hole in my pocket, I picked up a Loomis CR723 and a Zillion SV 9.1:1. I hike a lot and wanted a general purpose rod short enough to carry through brush that would handle heavier lures then my usual finesse stuff.
6'9" Heavy Hammer. Read smalljaw67's post here for why.
Plus I recently read an older post reviewing Hammer rods by a member on TT that fishes NRX rods. He was impressed.
I've read many good reviews of the Daiwas SV103. Total under $400. Or the Chronarch MGL. TT gave it an Editor's Choice Award. Still under $500.
The rod will eventually be added to my arsenal. Probably not either reel. Unless the OP would like to make our wishes a reality.
My newest combo is a Abu Garcia Revo SX on a 7' MHF Veritas 2.0 and I really like it so far.
My most used combo is a Pflueger President on a 7' MHF Lightning Rod Shock that has broken tip and is now more like 6'6".

But what would you pick if given $500 that had to be spent on one rod and reel?

$500? Wow. I couldn't imagine spending that much on a combo. I honestly don't have any experience with high end stuff so I don't know what the best is. I think I'd go get a custom rod made for me. For the reel I think I'd put a Shimano Curado E series.

how do you like the favorite rod? Thinking about getting either the big sexy or phantom
Pick your favorite $200 reel and $300 rod.
I don't have a dog in the production reel fight. For rods at $300 you get a lot of versatility and value from the Orochi XX line up.

Honestly love it i cant say i have experience in what most 200$+ rods are like as my best rod before this was a *** *** black, but i love the big sexy rod the 7' heavy is a good all use rod. Tosses a senko a mile and also has the back bone for some bigger spinnerbaits and such, might try some smaller swimbaits with it. I just love the feel of it all around and you cant beat the colors on it either. Definitely worth giving a chance seem like a great company so far

I change my answer the 103 is on sale and now you will have the cash to get a champion with that same budget!!!! Or a XX perfect pitch
Zillion SV TW 7:3:1 / Hammer 7 ' Heavy / 18 lb sunline sniper- worm/jig rod.
Point blank 73 mh rod blank size 6 guides and a daiwa tatula sv.
St Croix Legend Tournament Bass
7'1 MH-Fast
Daiwa Tatula SV
7.3:1
This my opinion at $500. I'm a traveling man and 2 piece rods is what I have use.
I have a Daiwa Tatula CT Type R on St Croix Premier MF 6'6
I have a Pflueger President Special Edition on BPS Bionic Blade 6'6
So both for $500
So happy with both rigs.
I know it's not in your parameters...guess I'm just proud of my combos that have served me beyond expectations
