Just curios how often you guys get new stuff I try to get a new combo when i can which is usually about every 5 years.I have quite a few and still use some of the older ones. But, with all the new technology that comes out ,I end up getting a more up to date combo about every 5 years. Unless one breaks down ,and needs to be replaced sooner.
There have been years where I have bought alot more than 1 most I think was 3 or 4
Anywhere from 2 to 4 times a year.
Not until I break a rod, or need a reel upgrade, which could be years.. ;D
Too often!
I picked up seven new rods and reels this year. So I probably won't buy another new one for a while unless theres a deal I can't pass up either on the flea market, or in a store.

me too
It's been about once every other year so far for me, but as much as I've been getting into fishing lately, that is definitely subject to change.
probally when ever i saved the money for that combo sometimes every month sometimes it takes 3 to 4 months
i get a 400$ monthly allowance from my wife to cover all my personal monthly spending, gas, smokes, snacks excetra... half goes to tackle ...always.... so when ever I have the money I buy a new reel or rod this year I have bought 7 reels and 5 rods
too ften...
I usally buy five or six rods and reels each year...but that has to stop soon...was buying mostly baitcasting gear because I was rather new to baitcasting...three or four years now, and I have been upgrading my gear.
Thus the question choices do not fit me.
I probably pick up 3-4 combos a year, this is only because I am new to fishing though. Once I aqcuire all setups I need (want) in a year or two that number will drop

Not likely

I thought the very same thing.
As of right now? Not nearly as often as I would like. I would say that I am averaging about one combo a year.
So far this year:
3 GLX rods
2 Zillion reels, 1 Steez reel
and I didn't 'need' any of it. It has stopped until I see the next 'must have' rod or reel :
I've already bought at least eight rods so far this year and about a dozen reels, and will be buying a couple more rods in the next few weeks.
I'm easily bored, so I don't keep gear very long.
Went out yesterday and realized that my fav. swimbait rod I know like for tossing jigs...Guess I must go buy some more gear!
I have bought 13 new reels and 7 new rods this year.
I plan to try and take advantage of St. Croix's trade up program each year. So, I get at least 2-3 new rods each season. My reels are good, but I couldn't pass up a deal on the Skeet Reese Revo from TW right before Father's day!
Once I'm on all top-end stuff, I guess I'll have to figure it out as I go.
Whets

I think you need to change the years to months in your poll. ;D

Burley, @ $400 a month I'd call it anything she wants to call it, as long as the perks go with it. 8-)

What is the trade up program? Apparently this is something that I have missed, but am rethinking my priorities.Hahahahaha

Iam guilty of this also!!!!!

yes an allowance, or call it pocket money.... don't ask me it's a korean thing
Usually not until I really NEED a replacement due to wear. I'd say every year or two I'm putting a new one in the rotation.

Oh yea, if you don't know about this, you are indeed missing out. http://www.stcroixrods.com/category/service_and_warranty
Basically, you can trade in one rod (let's say Avid) for a in the next category up (LTB or higher). You get credit for your rod towards the purchase of the new one. It's very cool. If you are anywhere close to the factory, I suggest just stopping in and taking care of the upgrade. I'm about 5 hours away and plan to drive up every spring before bass season opens here in Southern Wisconsin. Enjoy...

This year I have bought 5 rods and 3 or 4 reels. It's getting about time to sell some stuff for newer gear

X2
2 reels and 7 rods. I didn't know I needed them until I found this site. THANKS.
I replace my spinning combos at least once a year, sometimes more. As far as baitcasters the I buy rods under $100 and replace them as needed. I have my 2 ABU reels repaired as needed, but I did purchase 3 new reels this year 2 that are junk and will be selling at the garage sale and 1 ABU Revo Toro which I ordered from Cabelas and will be picking up tomorrow. 15 years ago $100 would buy a really nice reel. Today...Not so much.
I've only ever bought reels and rods when they needed replacing or if it's a type of reel I don't have (Started with a spincaster, then bought a baitcaster, etc.). I've currently got one spincaster, one spinner, two baitcasters, and five rods, and don't plan on getting anything else till something breaks.
I have been working on getting my 5 rod arsenal built up for about three years now. I have managed to build four custom baitcast rods paired with Revo S-L's except one has a black max, it will be a revo in two weeks though. I also have one spinning rig which is an american rodsmiths rod with an abu 801 cardinal. Once I get that last revo I wont be replacing anything until it gets broken.
I try to limit my purchases to major holidays like, Christmas, my birthday, fathers day, George Washington's birthday, Boxer Day, 4th of July, Canada Day, Victoria Day, Administrative Professionals Day, the release date of Avatar on DVD, and so on. I can't handle frivolous impulse buying.
2-3 a year....
At least one each (spinning, baitcaster) of the latest reel and a nice rod to match
I own Shimano reels which eliminates any need for replacement due to wear
Rods of all brands will on occasion break mostly due to operator error
I have considered adding a spinning setup to my arsenal but due to stubbornness I haven't

Sound advise. Self discipline is important.
Right now I will get a new reel once a year. Most of my reels are 10+ years old so I am slowly getting replacements for them.
