Tatula Grooving 2024

fishing user avatarbassdisaster reply :

I know the tatula grooving issue has been equated to being as realistic as Bigfoot on this forum, but that was a year ago. Do people still think it doesn't really happen? I put braid on my 10 month old Tatula just 2 weeks ago, and it already has 2 distinct grooves that shear the braid off every few casts. I can post pics if anybody wants to see. This is very unfortunate, it's still a great reel, just not for braid. Thanks

fishing user avatarEvan K reply :

On the reel? Don't you mean the rod guides?

fishing user avatarbassdisaster reply :

No, on the t wing part of the reel.

fishing user avatartater555 reply :

I would like to see pics of this. I have a tatula spooled with 50lb power pro and it has no grooves in the t wing after about 4 months of fishing.

fishing user avatara1712 reply :

I've seen it with Flouro also. Brian.

fishing user avatarRaul reply :

This is issue is not that big of a deal, write/call Daiwa and they will send you a new part for free, besides it a relatively simple repair.

fishing user avatartomustang reply :

I'd call losing lures by grooves cutting line a big deal

fishing user avatarbassdisaster reply :

50lb power pro is what caused it, I think I only caught about 5 before it happened. None over 5 pounds. I'll try to post a pic

fishing user avatarbassdisaster reply :

Sorry for the bad Iphone picture

fishing user avatarrippin-lips reply :

The issue is real. There's no rhyme or reason to it. Some experience it, and some don't. Call Daiwa as already mentioned and they'll send you the newer T wing that's found on the Zillion TWS. If you don't feel you can do it yourself then you can ship it to them for repair. I had 2 regular tatulas and 1 type r. All have been sold but 2 of them were to my buddy so I see them regularly. It's been 2yrs now without any grooves.

fishing user avatarbassdisaster reply :

I called Daiwa, she had no clue what I was talking about and said she would call me back. Maybe she will call back, if not I'll try again maybe I just got somebody not very knowledgeable.

Spending good money on a NEW reel..having that reel fail, having that failure cost you money in broken braid and lost lures..perhaps not a big deal to you...

fishing user avatarsmalljaw67 reply :

The issue is real, it seems to happen more to reels that have been used with fluorocarbon much more than any other line. Most have been taken care of but Daiwa will take care of it by sending you the part or you shipping it to them and make sure you tell them to send you a shipping label.

fishing user avatarbassdisaster reply :

It was used with 17 and 20lb fluorocarbon since new but I just noticed it after putting braid on it. The Fluoro could have caused it

Perhaps the worst iPhone photo...ever!

fishing user avatarNathanW reply :

From what I have read over the last couple years is that it is an issue that occasionally happens mostly on Tatulas spooled with 10-14lbs fluorocarbon and used primarily for cranking. Instances where the spool is overfilled has caused grooving to the top of the T-Wing. It is obviously not a critical problem as evidence from the popularity of the reel but I truly believe that it is occurring.

I have not seen this on my Tatulas/Type-R's but I never do any cranking or high resistant reeling with mine other than during a fish catch.

fishing user avatarrippin-lips reply :

From what I've learned it's actually 4 groves. 2 at the top and 2 at the bottom of the tws directly below the top grooves. You can't see the ones on the bottom until the tws is removed. I was always curious how 2 grooves could be so perfect on every reel in the same place. Especially on a part that moves side to side. That's when I was told about the other set of grooves. Then it made sense to me.

fishing user avatardam0007 reply :

This makes me think it's a bad design for no reason should line be forced to rub against metal cast after cast.

fishing user avatarDelaware Valley Tackle reply :

It's a material issue more than design IMO. No line should groove quality metal

fishing user avatarWRB reply :

You need to complain to Daiwa and give them a chance to reply and make it right for you, good companies support their products.

I had grooving on 5 out of my 7 Tatulas.  Contacted Daiwa and sent them in for repair.  They replaced the T-Wings on all of my 7 Tatulas to the thinner newer T-Wing.  Didn't have any communication with them to know why or what caused it.  They sent them back 3 days later so no complaints from me.

Did yours occur from use with braid or fluoro?  I have 5 of the reels and haven't had a problem (yet).  I use braid exclusively on 3 of them...  Have you heard if the HD model has been affected at all?  Just curious if I should send them in while I'm not using them as much.

Thanks in advance.

fishing user avatarDwight Hottle reply :

The simple solution to the problem is spelled S------.

fishing user avatarbassdisaster reply :

I feel like it should be designed to where the line should not be rubbing that piece, when you have a fish on that's a lot of pressure cutting on that little piece of cheap metal. The way that piece is designed when your reel is engaged the line stays in the exact same spot when reeling, for the person who was wondering about that. And I have lost about ten jigs that I know we're caused by that, the line would break right at the reel and I haven't ever had that happen repeatedly. Not a whole lot of money but still not happy about it.

Amen to that! Go Shimano...

fishing user avatarAlonerankin2 reply :

Email Daiwa, request a warranty claim, etc. send her in & get it repaired.. Problem solved.

fishing user avatarbassdisaster reply :

I have a few Shimano reels, absolutely love the Curado I, except for the whine it makes casting.

Yeah but then I will be stuck with a reel that I know is going to have problems again in the future. I'm thinking of seeing if they will let me switch to the new Fuego baitcaster since it doesn't have the tws. I want to give it a try anyways.

fishing user avatarAlonerankin2 reply :

I believe in a earlier post rippin-lips stated the part has been revamped as to not allow grooving in the future.. So... I know he builds & tweaks Daiwa reels, shoot him a PM about it.. There are other Daiwa modifiers on the board as well. Unless there is another problem you might anticipate.

Good luck though...

fishing user avatarCTGalloway21 reply :

The HD and Zillion and other newer model reels have the thinner T-Wing.  Only the Tatula has the wider one, so obviously they changed it to help prevent the grooving.  They told me it could be from pressure or from overspooling, which is strange responses.  I have combinations of mono, fluoro, and braid so no idea which ones did it.

fishing user avatarbassdisaster reply :

I may just put a drop of super glue over the grooves and only use it with mono as a top water reel lol

fishing user avatarsarcazmo reply :

Over @ TT there are a few threads on this.  Supposedly if you contact daiwa they'll send you a new upgraded t-wing that seems to eliminate the problem.

fishing user avatarhatrix reply :

I only own 2 tatulas but they are the originals since they first came out and I have never had issue yet. One I actually bought from a member on here and it has had flouro on it ever since with no issue. The other reel has had CXX on it for most of its life. I have put them though hell and they are still going good. I think it is just lick for draw really.

fishing user avatarGetJigginWithIt reply :

Surprised the usual suspects are are not around attacking this guy that it never happened and he is just brand bashing.

If you call for this issue, do they send you the part to replace yourself or do you have to ship the reel in? Looks like one screw on the side of the level wind holds it.

They will not send you the upgraded T-Wing.  For warranty, you have to send the entire reel into to Daiwa.  I know cause I tried to get them to send me the T-Wings.  lol

I did not ever have line break cause of the groove which was nice, but it sill left me worried about what would happen if big mama got hooked.

fishing user avatarBadBassWV reply :

So in the picture, your talking about the 2 grooves on thee back of the T Wing??  I own 3 Tats and have never had a problem, Just want to make sure what I think I'm seeing is What you are talking About.

fishing user avatarBadBassWV reply :

I'm just wondering, to the guys that do reel repair.  Is it possible to put a regular Line Guide on a Tatula, and get rid of the T Wing??

fishing user avatarbass raider reply :

No. I don't think you could. The t-wing rotates into the open position and when it does the worm shaft & guard rotate too so I imagine it would mess up casting. Sell the tats and get a fuego if you want a conventional line guide

Sorry about the double post

fishing user avatarBadBassWV reply :

Like I said I have 3 Tats.  The T Wing has never been a problem for me.  The 2 Grooves in the OP's Post look like they are on the back of the T Wing.  I just don't understand how that grooving would occur ?  I fish mine with 50lb power pro braid since I got them.  Never had a problem with the T Wing, Positive or Negative.
