How Many Combo's Do You Use? 2024

fishing user avatarclayton86 reply :

How many Combo's do you guys use? not how many that you have but how many would you say you use every outing. Iv been working out a list of combo's I'm gonna set up and I got done and looked at it and was like holy crap that's a lot of set ups lol. So now Im scaling it back and thinking of what I throw the most and what lures I have because I had 2 cranking set ups on my list and I NEVER throw a crank I have maybe 15 and 10 of which are small shallow divers I use in the river on spinning tackle. So how many combos do you all use on average right now I have 4 "good" reels sitting at home 3 of which need a rod 2 Revo S's and a Citica then I already have my Veritas and Revo SX that was/is my jig/Trig combo. So how many combo's do you use and what are there uses.

fishing user avatarLgMouthGambler reply :

I had a bunch too, but I scaled back to just my trusty Shimanos.

1)Chronarch 200E7, Sellus MH, 20# Yozuri- Big Soft Plastics

2)Curado 200E7, Sellus H, 65# Braid-Frog

3)Curado 50E, Vendetta M, 12# Yozuri-Spinnerbaits during tourneys, and all around town rig

4)Citica G6, Lightning Shock MH, 17# Mono-Topwater Spooks

5)Citica E, Sellus MH, 40# Braid, Soft Plastics Heavy Cover

6)(Soon to get)Chronarch 50E, Veritas M, 12# Yozuri, Crainkbaits

fishing user avatarclayton86 reply :

Right now I'm thinking

Revo SX 7'6" Veritas MHF 50# PP-Texas rigged plastics(have already)

Revo S 7' Veritas MM Winch 12# flouro of some kind- Cranking

Revo S 6'9" MHF micro- Spinners

Citica 7' MHF Lightning 50# pp- Frogs/buzzbaits(have already)

them are the reels I have so far just need 2 rods I remember I had that lightning with a Pflueger Echlon on it im gonna move to back up or maybe put on a jerkbait/topwater rod some thing 6'6" Medium action

then I'm 99% certain I'm gonna pre order a Gen 3 Revo S and mount it on the 7'11 H-MF Veritas flipping stick and that will be my jig rod and that will be it for my casting set ups and I think I have all my bases covered.

then my spinning set ups I think im gonna go with the new Revo sx on the 6'9" vendetta ML-XF for weightless plastics and lighter plastics like tubes and grubs. Then a skipping/ river wadding set up that will be a new Revo S on a 6'6" Veritas MH-F.

All I gotta do after that is get a boat to haul it haul with lol. I already bank fish with 4-6 rods as it is im just going to all new higher quality stuff instead of crappy POS combos picked up at DSG on clearance.

fishing user avatartomustang reply :

I use two combos, the one in my sig I use for just about everything, and a 7' MHM avid crankbait rod for every crankbait I have except the tiny ones.

fishing user avatarMike__D reply :

I tend to use anywhere between 7 to 10 combos per outing (on a boat), and if I am shore fishing 3 to 3. Here is what I normally use to make my rotation out of:

Shimano Cumara CUCX711MH 1/2 1 1/2 Soft Swimbait Team Daiwa Fuego

Dobyn's Extreme DX795 Flip Flip/Punch Team Daiwa Zillion 100SHA

Dobyn's Champion Casting 736 3/8 2 Frog Abu Garcia Revo Premier 7:1

Dobyn's Extreme DX745C Pitching Stick / Jig Pflueger Patriarch XT

St. Croix Legend Elite 7'0' MH F 3/8 1 Texas Rig Pflueger Patriarch XT

St. Croix Legend Elite 7'0' M F 1/4 5/8 Texas Rig Pflueger Patriarch XT

Shimano Cumulus 7'1' MH XF 1/4 3/4 Senko Shimano Curado 100D

Shimano Cumara 6'8' MH F 1/4 3/4 Soft Jerkbait Audrey/Pflueger Patriarch XT

Dobyns Extreme 743 3/16 5/8 Tubes Pflueger Patriarch 9535

St. Croix Avid 6'8' M XF 3/16 5/8 Wacky rig Senko Shimano Sustain 2500FE

I have 2 crankbait rods, but just like the OP I almost never throw a crankbait. I will only bring the rod out if i know 100% that I need to use it.

fishing user avatarclayton86 reply :

See I think once I get a boat I will really expand like how you have 2 rods for Texas rigged plastics depending on weight and one for tubes. Right now im stuck in a canoe or on the shore. The wife is all for getting a boat even a bass boat she says when shes not fishing she can lay down on the deck and tan fine by me! lol I think for this up coming season im gonna go with the combo's listed then next season add on top of that ad so on and so forth.

fishing user avatarKevO reply :

Yeah it took a while to acquire all of my gear. You don't really need 3 of this or that. I can get by with 1 but its nice to be able to tie on 3 different baits and switch between them when one isn't working. I was lucky enough to have a good job and be single for a while so I could pay for the boat and combos. LOL! :respect-059:

fishing user avatarSirSnookalot reply :

I fish for a variety of species in totally different environments using both bait and artificial lures, kinda tough to narrow it down.

Pond fishing freshwater................med 6/12 spinning rod 30 size reel, 10# braid

Canal freshwater...........................med 8/17 inshore spinning 35 size reel 15# braid

Inshore salt, waters edge..............med 8/17 inshore spinning 4000 reel 15# braid

Inshore salt, jettie..........................mh 10/20 spinning 4000 reel 20# braid

Inshore barracuda.........................mh 12/25 spinning 5000 reel 14# mono

Offshore salt..................................40# spin boat rod, 7000 reel 30# braid

Offshore salt..................................25# boat rod 25 size conventional 20# mono

With the exception of offshore I usually have only 1 rod with a couple of lures, always have back up gear in my car in case of mechanical failure. Offshore I take 2 or 3 rods and use them all at the same time.

I have about 25 combos, all I really need is what's mentioned, the rest is just for a change of pace, but I do like to use them all, seldom do I take the same combo 2 days in a row.

Yeah that's my biggest thing is I want to be able to just switch fast and not have to rig some thing up and all this and that to find out its not what they want and have to re do it all again more combos means more time with lures in the water and not in my hands getting tied on.

Powell Max 733 spinning/ Symetre 2500: small jigs

Powell Max 753 casting/ Citica 201D: big jigs

(I don't really fish anything other than jigs and swimbaits..)

fishing user avatarChiCityBasser reply :

I've gone from bank fishing to tourny fishing and have a number of combos that probably overlap out of the 14 combos I have right now but I'll list the ones I take out when I'm on the boat.

Cabelas XMLTi 7' M/F / Quantum Energy PT - Carolina Rig/

Cabelas Prodigy 7' MH/MF / Quantum Energy PTxm(PBS PQ 5.2:1 replacement reel) - Deep Cranking

Field & Stream Tec Spec 7'6" MH/XF / Daiwa Exceler 7.1:1 - Heavy jigs/T rigs

Cabelas Prodigy 7' M/F / Quantum Catalyst PTi-B20 - Shallow 1' to 8' Cranks

Field & Stream Tec Spec 7' MH/F / Quantum PTi-20B - Lighter Jigs/T-rigs/Shakey Head

Cabelas XMLTi 6'8" M/XF / Pflueger Supreme XT - Drop Shot

These are the 6 combos that have made every tourney trip so far this season with the top three being casting and the bottom 3 spinning combos. I have other combos that have made one or two trips but these cover all but the really heavy cover situations. In those situaltions I have on standby:

Quantum Superlite PT 7'11" H/XF / Quantum Accurist / 50# Braid - Heavy cover

Cabelas XML 7' H/F / Quantum Accurist 501 / 50# Braid - Heavy cover

fishing user avatarHighhawk1948 reply :

One Flipping 3/8 oz. pegged slip sinker

Two Pitching 3/16 and 1/8 oz slip sinkers

One Drop Shot

One Charlie Brewers Slider 1/4 oz.or for Mojo Worm rig

One Charlie Brewers Slider 1/8 oz

One for Crankbaits/Spinner Baits

One ultra light with Beetle Spin

So..... 2 Spinning and 6 Casting Outfits. I use about half on them in a morning of fishing. Hardly ever throw cranks or spinner baits. I like lead and plastic.

fishing user avatar38 Super Fan reply :

I mostly beat the banks, so while I have about half a dozen different combos, I usually just bring one casting combo and one spinning combo. The two that get the most work are my Falcon Cara finese jig rod and lews tourney pro, and my 6'10" Med/F spinning Cara with President XT.

fishing user avatarBASSclary reply :

Hitting banks, I carry at most, three. I bring what I think i'll need for that water at the time of year and conditions.

However, If I had a boat.... We'll you can bet i'll throw the kitchen sink.

4-5 all depending where I am going and what species lives there.

fishing user avatarBassinMD reply :

I take 6 but I only really use 4 a spinning rod for senkos And random sissy stickin, a frog / punch rod for heavy slop and pads with braid, and 2 jig rods one for pitching with 20 # flouro and one for casting with 15# flouro, te other 2 almost never get used

fishing user avatarww2farmer reply :

I carry ten in the boat, on a good day, I will use two or three rods all day, on an average day I will have 5-7 out, on a tough day all of them will be out. I tend to be a "junk" fisherman even when fishing is good, I just can't sit in one spot and do one thing all day long, but I can do one thing all over the lake, or I like to switch up in one spot aftre a while and show them a few different things.

fishing user avatarNorcalBassin reply :

Used to have about 10 with me and then I started realizing I was only using 3-4 each trip and it was quite a bit of wasted space and time getting them all rigged up. Now I try to limit myself to 5 (3 casting, 2 spinning).

fishing user avatarHooligan reply :

IT really depends on what I'm doing. If I'm crankin' even on a good day I may have five rods on the deck. On a bad day in general, I may have six or eight out. If It's a jig bite, I'll generally have three rods out with three weights of jig.

How many do I carry in the boat? Usually 36.

7' M Carbonlite/Revo S

6'10" MH Falcon LowRider/Revo S

7' MH Carbonlite/Pro Qualifier

7' ML All Star/Pro Qualifier

Typically four. Two baitcasters and two spinning.

Shimano Citica 200E/Vendetta 6'6"

Revo Orra High Speed/Team All Star 6'10"

Shimano Sahara 2500/All Star G40X 6'6"

Shimano Stradic/St. Croix 6'

fishing user avatarrockchalk06 reply :

I typically bring all 4 bait casters and my only spinning combo so 5. I shore fish, so I haven't invested in several more combos yet as lugging 5 with two boxes, fish basket and plastics bag is enough.

Basically my spinnging set up is for senkos. I have two jig rods. One 1/2 oz and higher and one for lighter jigs. A crank rod and a top water rod.

20'. My port rod locker is empty for the most part. When I'm fishing, whether a tournament or fun fishing, I want to make darn certain that I have ALL my tools. You never know what you're going to run into. Yesterday, for instance, turned into a swim jig bite, and I was throwing four different swimjigs in two colors and two sizes to get the job done. I can't do that effectively with four or five rods, along with having a Trig, a creature, a flip stick, and... I have multiples of rods so that I may capitalize on the effective pattern. You think any pro out there doesn't have at least three of their primary, let's use a jig rod as an example? The only rods that I generally don't carry multiples of are my drop shot rods and my finesse spinning and finesse casting. I carry one jerkbait rod year round. Depending on the lake I change out what I'm going to have the most of. For instance on Table Rock, I'm going to have at least 4 7-2 MHXF rods in Summer. Spring will usually find me with just two, and instead I'll have four 6-8 MXF for jerkbaits. On a crank pattern, I'll have four 7-10 crank sticks, and usually three 7-11 Crank sticks, at a minimum. You tailor your gear to what you will generally run into, and have all the extras as back up rods because you never know what will come up.

My standards that are ALWAYS in the boat:

6-8 MXF Spinning

6-8MHXF Spinning

7-2 MXF Dropshot

7-2MHF Spinning

6-8 MXF Casting x2

6-8 MHXF Castingx2

6-6 MH Casting

6-6 M Casting

7-2 MF Casting

7-2MHF Casting

7-2 MXF Casting-3

7-2MHXF Casting-3

7-5 Casting- 3

7-6 Flip

7-9 Flip

7-11 Flip Swim-3

7-0 H Crank-2

7-8 MH Crank-2

7-11 Crank-2

I fill and trade out rods like Senko and variable TX rig rods based on where I'm going and what time of year.

fishing user avatarBluebasser86 reply :

I'll usually have between 5-12 rods in the boat. If I have 12 my starting lineup is usually:

6' 2" M/XF Avid/50E popper/jerkbait rod

6' 6" M/F Mojo/Revo S spinnerbait/buzzbait rod

7' M/F Mojo/200e7 T-rig/light jig rod

7' M/M Pro Glass/200e5 cranking rod

7' M/F Premier/200BSF trap rod

7' H/F Mojo/Record 50 swimbait rod

7' 3" MH/F LTB/200e7 C-rig/jig rod

7' 6" MH/F LTB/200e7 pitching/flipping rod

7' 8" MH/M Mojo/PQ deep cranking rod

6' 8" ML/F Crucial/Symetre 1000 light shaky/dropshot rod

6' 10" ML/F Rage/Supreme 30 dropshot/grub rod

6' 10" LTB/Supreme 35 shakyhead rod

Luckily my wife won't touch a computer! :)

Always take at least one spinning rod. Usually one with 8# mono, but since getting my River Runner it will be 2...RR with 1500CU/10# 832, and Villain ML with 8# mono. I usually take at least 8 combos...the rest being B/C. If fishing from shore that day, only 2 at a time will get carried with me, and I would prefer only one, but........ If from my small boat, 4 or 5 go with me. I switch outfits as the mood strikes me. Fishing around here pretty much sucks so it doesn't make much difference what I carry.

Two rods that have made every trip this year are the Fenwick ET Smallmouth 6'10" MF with Curado 51E and 8# mono and the Cumara 7'2" MHF with Fuego and 10# fluoro. I like to switch combos so that all get used occasionally.

fishing user avatarfishking247 reply :

for bass fishing i've basically narrowed it down to 4 rods.

1. finesse (senkos, jerkbaits, rapalas, grubs, light texas rigs)

2. topwater/spinnerbaits

3. frog/HEAvy texas rigs

4. crankbaits

fishing user avatarQUIENYO reply :

I've kept it at three;

1/ 7ft spinning set up for finesse and most plastics and some treble hook lures

2/ 6ft casting for cranks and light top waters

3/ 7ft casting for jigs and frogs

I would like to pick up a HS casting reel to match to a 7-6h rod I have and make that my dedicated jig set up.

For me, this is all I need. Down the road, I may grow the collection some, but I don't think I'll get to the point of ten plus on the boat with me. You never know though.

I'm not sure about that. I mean..what is one more rod in a room full of rods. He doesn't have to tell her he bought a new one, and I doubt his wife would notice a couple more new ones amongst the vast collection already crowding the room. :eyebrows:

fishing user avatarFontana Finesse Man reply :

I carry about 15-20 combos with me at all times in my boat, however, most of these never make it out of the rod box unless I need one of them for something different or break something. My main combos that are used:

2 Quantum Tour KVD MH 6'10 in spinnerbait rods, both with Shimano DC Calais reels 7-1, one has 3/8 spinnerbaits and the other 1/2 oz.

1 Abu Garcia Veritas 7' MH with a Quantum Tour Edition KVD reel 7.3-1 for buzzbaits. (strangely, for me that is the best rod I have ever used for a buzzbait, action is perfect for me)

1 Duckett Micro Magic rod 7' M with a Shimano Sahara FE reel specifically for flukes.

1 Old model Team Daiwa LT 7'6 H with a Quantum PT Energy reel for flipping.

1 G Loomis Crankbait Rod 783 with a Shimano Core 50 MG for square bills and medium divers.

1 Shimano cumara 7' Rod with a Shimano Stradic CI-4 for shakey head fishing.

These rods are out pretty much all the time when I go to the lake, but if I need to go in the box there is everything from BPS extremes to custom deep cranking rods.

My wife knows what I have. I don't even try to sneak one past her. We have a deal. I say nothing about clothes and shoes; and she says nothing about fishing gear. Works out nicely.

I do have more combos than I need. Some of them have not hit the water in quite some time. i really need to liquidate some of that stash.
