Rod and Reel $$$$ 2024

fishing user avatarTopwaterdude reply :

If you had a $1,000 to spend on rod and reel for Texas rigged baits what would you get?

fishing user avatarkenmitch reply :

If it was me I'd spend less on a combo and hire some hot looking hoty to go fishing with me a couple times.

fishing user avatarTopwaterdude reply :

I'm new to the forum and been reading alot of post about $100 range rods and reels I was curious what the $500 rods and reels people like.

Personally I have a 3-daiwa tatula 3 CT ,3-Lew's,speed spools, 1-pfleuger president,1-Kast king speed demon with Dobyns fury rods.

My jig rod is a st croix legend 70mhf with a steez 100.  If you pay retail that's a grand.  If I wanted a different rod I would get one.  Works wonderful

fishing user avatarbasseditor reply :

Steez and Kistler Zbone rod. I have several set ups now, 7’ and 7’3”  and 3 of the 7’6” Rods and all have Steez reels. $5,000 plus retail. Luckily, I didn’t pay that much, but almost.

Kistler's Zbone is a good rod but not in the class of an NRX, Conquest, or K2 in my opinion. I own all and sold my Zbones. I would likely get an NRX and Metanium DC or Steez, whichever you prefer.

fishing user avatarNHBull reply :

Conquest rod with a Met DC or Conquest 100

I guess some of you get a discount on gear which is awesome I pay what tackle warehouse sells it for ????

fishing user avatarScrapiron reply :

Megabass Destroyer FMJ or Javelin (could use either depending on lure weight, cover, etc.) with a Steez SV TW. Actually, a Steez A TWS balances a little better on the Javelin.

Under a grand! So, I'd add a ZPI PG spool to the SV, maybe a Steez SV 1016 spool to the A.

Custom rod built with a Rainshadow Eternity blank/ Shimano  Conquest 100/ #12 Tatsu

I have $1,000.00 to spend every time I buy a rod and reel. The combo is usually $600.00 or less. I never felt any benefit to a very expensive rod and because of that, a very expensive rod does not make me feel better about fishing the same way an overpriced reel does. I’ll feel better keeping the other $400.00.

That's interesting. I would rather spend more on the rod. The performance difference from a rod around $200-$300 such as an Expride or Dobyns Champion to a Conquest, NRX, GLX, Destroyer, K2 is significant. I always recommend spending more on the rods. There are a lot of great reels that are phenomenal in the $179.99-$299.99 range that provide great value whereas I can't say the same about rods but there are a few.

I went with an FMJ with a sv103 on it.  I have tried a few spools and I think the ZPI PG is next on the list.

I like the 105 spool requires no backing and holds just the right amount of 12 lb flourocarbon

I get some used gear and look for great Ebay deals.  Got a nib steez for 350 which really reduced the cost of my setup.  TW is my primary store but when I do I buy big during the sales.  LABOR DAY was 15% off.

Everyone’s different. Not knocking anyone. But when I go through the store and bounce every rod in the store around, I never find myself leaning towards the more expensive ones. In most cases, I find rods under $200 better than those over $200. I don’t like needle thin rods that feel like a 7 foot long hollow pencil. I’m happier with a 7’ BPS Crankin Stick than a super thin, super light and stiff expensive rod with tiny guides.

I tend to spend more on my rods than reels but man can I tell a difference when I throw some of the higher dollar stuff. I am a G-Loomis guy and I’ve had and loved IMX and GLX spinning and baitcasting Rods. My most expensive reels are Shimano Curados and Quantum Vapor PTs. ($150-$175 range)

fishing user avatarYumeya reply :

NRX and a Metanium from japan.

I love the Christmas Sale at Tackle Warehouse. You can get some really good deals for cheap.

Daiwa Steez TW SV from the SLP works shop.  Megabass Destroyer Full Metal Jacket.  Gold color parts on the Steez to match the gold trim on the FMJ.

I would also consider a Megabass IP68 with a faster gear set swapped in if I felt I needed a heaver reel or wanted that slick black and gold of the IP68.

I have a Steez tw sv and I’m going to give this combo a try this weekend.  The sv103 gives the rod a slight butt-heavy feel, which I like, but the Steez makes it super light in hand.

How do you like the Steez TW SV?  Does it palm as well as an Alphas?

Eh, it is a good reel but I would not pay anywhere close to MSRP for a second one.  Not that it's bad, but it's not $200 better then an sv103.  Right now it is rodless as it was uncomfortable to me on the rod I bought it for, an MBR 783 GLX.  It feels comfortable on the FMJ casting around the yard, so I have some hopes that it will work out. The Steez TW SV has a bump-out on the rear-bottom on the handle side that my ring finger rubs on a few rods I have tried. The Alphas series has been comfortable on every rod I have put one on.

I bought it looking for a middle ground between the Alphas and sv103, but if I could go back in time I would have spent the money on an TD-Z Ito and a ZPI spool.  It's a bummer but I don't think there is a single current production Dawia reel that I am really interested in.

fishing user avatarTroxBox reply :

For me, It's NRX and Aldebaran. Like fishing with a feather and crazy sensitive... Another good reel for that rod is like everyone is saying, da STEEZ! NRX+Ald=$920 , NRX+Steez=2 pennys off a grand (both before taxes, better buy from TW!)

Thanks for the insight.  The TWS does make the newer Daiwa reels goofy shaped compared to the pre TWS reels.  The Steez is supposed to be the one they got right and a turning point in TWS reel design but I'm waiting until they are $300 reels used in mint condition before going after one.

It's really just the bump that kills for me.  The reel with a RCS 1012 SV spool in it casts amazingly smoothly, just effortless distance and control, but that bump is just the worst.  Also, while I don't hate the TW, it is very easy to see how much more trim and streamlined the Steez SV TW could have been without it and I don't think the TW system brings enough to the table to be worth the design restraints it seems to cause.

In any case, the Steez is on the FMJ, spooled with 16lb tatsu.  I am going to hit the lake tomorrow afternoon with a 1/2oz jig tied on and see what kinda trouble I can get in to.

Have you tried the Steez TW SV with a Fuji ACS reel seat yet?  That reel seat might nestle your fingers into a position that will not allow the ring finger to find the bump.  That reel seat does have problems with reels with larger gearboxes but that shouldn't be a problem for the Steez.

fishing user avatarbunz559 reply :

For texas rigged baits on the lighter range I'd go with a Dobyns 743 HP paired with a 8:1 Shimano Metanium. For heavier texas rigged baits I'd go with a Dobyns 745 HP paired with a 8:1 Metanium as well. That should set you at about a grand after taxes and shipping. Maybe a little less so you can also throw in some Power Pro 30lb braid and some SF Sniper 14lb line.

I am one of the weirdos who likes the  ACS seat, but I don’t have one in my collection anymore.

I fished the Steeze SV TW on the FMJ for a solid 7hours the other day.  It was super comfortable and while a jig bite never happened, I got a few on a Cover Craw pitched around some pads.  The combo feels super light in hand and the rod has far more power then it initaly feels like.

This reminds me that I need to get some cover craws to glide under docks next spring.  They may not last long but they can tempt picky fish that have seen a lot of other baits

I have the Cover Craws and some Fat Ikas in a 3500 box and switch between them when the current one gets destroyed.  They seem to work about the same.

Same here. I'm not a big an of the ECS and like the ACS. Actually I prefer the Megabass spiral seat or the Loomis (GLX) one.

fishing user avatarDaveT63 reply :

I would buy a couple combos, used, for that money.  If you are patient, you can find a like-new St Croix Legend Elite, an NRX, a Steez, and an SV 103, all for under $1000.  I think I spent about $925 total on the ones I have.

fishing user avatarDanTheFireman reply :

After reading thru, I've really got to try an NRX. The He3 LMH is one of my favorite rods so far and have three M Exprides and one ML which IMO are great, the NRX must be something special.

Also, the Metanium HG came up several times, I switched two to the brass gears and Carbontex drag and left one

stock, an easy swap and it really does make the reel even better.

Regarded as one of the best rods ever made. You'll be extremely happy as it excels at bottom contact presentations!
