Revo Premier? 2024

fishing user avatarSkeet22 reply :

Picked one up in mint condition for $105

Are they better for Pitching or casting?

Where could I find some aftermarket eva handle grips?

fishing user avatarVinny Chase reply :

I only have a few revo's, but I like them more for casting. I prefer Curado's for pitching/flippin.

You can get reel grip handles just about anywhere now, but if you want to go right to the source here is the link.

http://www.reelgrip.com/

BTW I'm assuming the reel is an '09 correct?

Yes it is an 09. I have some revos as well and I prefer the sx for casting and the s for pitching.

Oh and I was actually talking about the eva foam handles not the reel grips. Thanks though

You can probably order the Carbonlite handle set from BPS. The reels have a same general design, but Im not positive it'll work, so check with someone with more experience first.

Both. I haven't had a problem using it for either one! Great buy!

Yep, makes a great dog whistle.

fishing user avatarSeanW reply :

I think Abu's are great for casting, pitching, and flipping. Use the Premier on whatever you want a nice light combo for. Match it to a nice light rod and you will wanna fish it all day.

fishing user avatarQuillback reply :

Yep Premiers are a great all-around reel.  If you see any more for $105 and you don't want to buy it yourself, please shoot me a PM! :)

fishing user avatarFishohio reply :

Premiers aren't any good. You would probably want to stick with a Curado.

I'll give ya 110$ for it just to take it off your hands. :) ;D

Like said earlier you can do anything with that reel...

fishing user avatarbwell reply :

Yeah I am jealous, you got an amazing reel for a awesome price.  Do anything you want with it, but I would probably use it for casting and use something else for pitching.

I have a old Revo silvermax that I use for pitching and it does a great job.

As you're probably aware, the 09 is not the same reel as the 2010 version which everyone is raving about. The 09 version had a weaker drag and only one braking system, for example. The drag can be updated, from what I understand, so might be worth looking into for a flipping/pitching reel. Should work fine for you and all, just might need a little work.

Yeah i'm aware they made some changes in 2010 but from everything ive read the 09 is still a great reel esp for $105. I beleive its drag is listed @ 12lbs but from what I read its actually closer to 20lbs. I will prob use the reel for pitching so the single mag brake should not be an issue.

By the way I'm not sure what drag is in the silvermax reels but I landed an 8# pig this past Fall on one of those and it did not hesitate so i'm sure the premier will do fine. :)

I just won a 2011 7.1:1 premier on ebay and can't wait to get it.  I haven't used one yet.(premier of any ratio)

Last year I used reels that include a 50mg,  50mg7,  revo sx,  curado e7,  citica 200e and a patriarch xt.  After using the premier I'm going to try and get to the point where I'm only using a couple of different reels types for my whole lineup.

Yeah I'm working towards all revos myself. Although I do have an Orra sx that is absolutley unbeleiveable for the price so its hard not to buy more of those...

Using the same series of reel makes sense. I use all Revos, but 3 different models. The Revo S is on my Flip/Punch rods, the STX for pitching and casting rods, and the Premier where I want the lightest and most sensitive set up(jigs and plastics).

I took your advice last week and ordered a 7'3" MH Veritas for pitching 1/4oz and up plastics and jigs. I think I will mount that Premier I just purchased on this rod. Should be a sweet set up. I have a revo S on my 7'6" veritas and using it for jigs/punching and carolina rigging.

Have an sx on a 7'2" Carrot and use it for lipless cranks and regular cranks. This set up casts a country mile and is so smooth. I want to switch to all Abu rods but I think this will be my only set up that I just cant part with so I will have one orange rod in the bunch.

Very good choice, thats the reel I use on that rod as well, I have 2 of that set up. I hae a few more Premiers still in box's waiting for the Verdicts to get here before I decide where I want em.

In a matter of 2 weeks I managed to sell all of my rods and most of my reels and have been replacing everything with Abu stuff. I actually consolidated some and will be down to 6 rods on the deck instead of the 10 I use to have. In the past I would have a seperate rod for a buzzbait and spinnerbait now I will use one. I combined my jerkbait top water (pop r style) and went from 3 crankbait rods to 2. Im using the norman speed clips on my spinnerbait and crankbait rod to help with changing lures. So far i'm happy with the extra deck space and Im only missisng my dedicated senko/fluke rod now that will be my next purchase and I also added a spinning set up to fish shaky heads with thats been alot of fun so far. I have less set ups rigged now but feel like I have better organization and utilization now. Kind of off topic I know...

fishing user avatarSeanW reply :

Sounds good to me. Your gonna have a nice set of combo's goin and I think you'll like that they are one or 2 brands. I usually have alot of rods in prefish, but come tournament day Im usually pretty dedicated to what I figured out. I prefer to only have 3 rods out, but thats rare. Im closer to 5 or 6.

fishing user avatarflippin and pitchin reply :

The 2010 Premier can fill any need except larger swimbaits due to spool size.  I found I use the two I bought for thowing lighter baits long distances, like flukes, lipless baits, jerkbaits and so on.  Don't get too worked up over EVA grip paddles.  There is nothing wrong with the materials used in the other Revo models.  Enjoy !

Actually the only reason im looking for new handles is b/c the previous owner removed one of the paddles for some reason so I figured I would replace with eva paddles but I have had no luck finding any online...

Must have been the older versions, not the 2010, 10 bearing models. Abu really hit one out of park with the new version.

Not trying to hi-jack this thread, but no use starting a new thread for my questions. I'm thinking about getting one of the new Premier's also and trying to switch to all Abu's as well. The reason for this is because right now I have BPS Extremes,Rick Clunns, and Quantum Accurist(2 of each one mentioned) and I have a Winch that I put on my crankbait rod......I thought before that the BPS were excellent reels until I used the Winch and fell in love with it!

So now to my question, whats the opinions on the new Revos? I have been looking at a lot of reviews on the internet and the consensus seems that the SX is not that great of a reel. Anybody else seem to think this or am I just reading too much into the reviews? I'm definately wanting to get a new Premier, but can't afford more than one or two because they are so expensive. What's everyones views on the S,SX, and STX's? Thanks in advance for any information.

I'm assuming you're joking as that was certainly not the only changes to the reel from the 09 to the current model.

Sure would've been nice if they'd have given then a different model name, like Shimano does when they update their reels. Like Premier X or something.

The hard part when reading online reviews of the Revo's is that it's hard to tell if folks are talking about the older models or the current ones. As I mentioned in the post right above this one, it would've been nice if Abu had put a different designator with the model name to help with that issue.

The older versions were not quite as good as the newer stuff in some of the reels, like the SX and the Premier. I had an older SX and I guess it was one of a batch of bad ones they put out. Some guys had great luck with the older SX, but mine was tough to control, which you read a lot about on the forums. I sent it to Abu recently and they sent me a current version for free. It's a great reel so far.

I've not owned any of the older Premier's, but the new ones are really great all around reels. Very smooth, light and versatile. Can't recommend them enough. And you can get them brand new for about $200 delivered to your door, if you look around enough.

fishing user avatarEvans reply :

Jeb, thanks for the info. I noticed that the new ones are better and it would be great to have something in the model number to identify the specific model. Hopefully I can find those Premiers for $200 like you're talking about. So far I've only found them for $220 but plan on at least getting one of them. Like I said, once I got my Winch....I was hooked on the Abu Garcias! I was really nervous about the centrifugal braking, but after a day on the lake with it, I loved it!

fishing user avatarFishinTN reply :

You can get a used '10 model premier for $150.00 range. As far as new, the stx is a great reel in the '10 or older models. I have a couple sx' and I'm weeding them out for stx's and premier's. There ok(sx), but I like the BPS Pro-Q better. I can't tell too much differance between the premier and stx('10 model), I never had a 09 or older premier.

Just a note and you are probably already aware of it, but the Premier has both mag and centrifgual brakes. You can use both, or either.

You have to be a little patient on the auction sites, but I've gotten 2 brand new ones to my door for under $200 now. I paid a little more than that at my local dealers for one, but he had them on sale at the time. These are all the 6.4:1, not the newer 7:1 version. Same reels otherwise, as far as I know. I just prefer the 6.4 for its versatility.

I think the STX is a Premier clone, just built on the heavier frame. So the Premier is at least 2 ounces lighter is the biggest difference, AFAIK. For some folks, weight is a critical part of the decision, but not for others.

fishing user avatarSkeet22 reply :

So I got out this weekend with the 09 Revo Premier I picked up paired with a 7'3" Veritas and what a dream to fish with! I read alot of bad reviews on the 09 but I cannot say anything bad about it. Super light, smooth, and was very easy to get dialed in. I mainly pitched with it and the distance I was getting with a 1/4 ox pegged weight was outstanding. I also put the drag to test on a 25" shoepick and it did not budge...

If anyone wants to get rid of their 09 premiers cheap let me know. :)

There really is nothing wrong with the SX, it just seems to be the odd reel out in the Revo line. Meaning for the little extra money you can get an STX. Personally I use Revo S models for pitching flippin and punching. STX and Premiers for everything else casting. I really like all of them, just no need for the light and more expensive models for flip/pitch and punch.

fishing user avatarL a r r y reply :

I have two Premiers and STX-HS.  I've got to say that the Premier in my hands feel so buttery smooth from the cast to the drag.  I have the 09 models  so I can only imagine how the '10s cast.  I learned how to go through them and clean out the assembly gunk and let me tell you, that made a HUGE difference.  They are a good  reel out of the box, and with a little TLC they can be better. You don't have to go overboard with a supertune, as the bearings are pretty darn good as they come.  Alot of people do not like them as they do not fit the palm of their hand, and that is just ones preference.   I have my STX-HS paired up with a 7'3 MH  Vendetta and my Premiers with a 7'0 MH and a 6'3 M.  Let me tell you, all of them can launch any lure I tie on a backwoods kuntry mile.  It does take a little getting used to and getting them dialed in, but once you do, you will be in lovefor what you paid for your setups

fishing user avatarSeanW reply :

My S is buttery smooth. When cleaned and serviced properly they are very nice. I just did mine this weekend and wow, what a difference. Id suggest having all the 09's serviced if you have not done so.

That's a very good point. I've always thought the price point on the SX was a little high, but never thought of it in comparison to the rest of the line. Looking at compared to the STX, it'd be a no brainer for me to spend the extra $30 or so. I got my 09 SX on a closeout from Dick's Sporting goods for like $70 around Xmas/09.

fishing user avatarEvans reply :

Well guys, I really appreciate all of the information. Just got my w-2's today and hopefully tax return pretty soon because I have a list of Abus to buy! I finally found me a new 2010 premier under $200(not much under but enough to buy it!). And after looking through a lot of different prices, I have found I can get a STX for only $19.90 more than a SX so I will definately be buying a few of them and a few of the S models as well. Thanks again for all the help and once I get them spooled up and on the water, I will let you know what I think of them. If they are on same level as a Winch, then I will definately not be disappointed!!!  ;D
