I considered myself not so newbie with casting reel. I have been casting abu 6500 c3 with no brake on, newell and many others.
Today went out for a quick, really quick fishing at the city park lake and come back home with this.
Stupid to cast my plopper hit and stuck on the tree above me. Pull the lure out of the tree branch, broke the line, drop into water about 10-15ft from me. The backlash is so huge and messy, I didnt even think will have time to finish untangle before my lure float away, so I reeled all the line in to tie on another lure to retrieve that expensive plopper back. All it took was just an hour but ruin my morning.??
We've all been there.
If it was braid most likely could have saved it
I use braid. Ive never had to cut a backlash
According to Bill Dance ' You might want to trade that one in!!"
And after
I think I lost more than 30yds out of this. Really stupid me.
@d-camarena and yes I was trying to untangle that while you texting me with your reel.
Soooooo did you get the plopper back? Or not?

Will you put new line on it first?

Fortunately yes. I didnt have any topwater with me so I used crankbait to hit the plopper back close enough for my rod lenght.

Great, so about putting new line on my new reel? Think that's gonna happen or not. Any chance you'd throw that plopper in the deal too?
It is really suck, It was a beautiful day today in Cali, cloudy overcast all morning and now start to rain. I was hoping toowater action which I have not done so successfully with whoppler plopper.

Wait for the next time, but Ill have you go retrieve the lure and untangle the reel yourself.?

I can't argue with ya on that one.

Never mind then. I don't know if I could have untangled that one. I probably would have traded that one in.

Maybe if you got JustJames to agree to untangle any future backlashes and maybe throw in a rod just for good measure. Postage paid of course.

I don't know why but I have a feeling that some time in the future you'll more than likely get a chance to brush up on your backlash untangling/cutting out skills again.
Hmmmmm. Looks familiar. Last time I caught the weeds behind me I had to cut line out too. What did you have on the reel?.....20# fluorocarbon? Looks like wire cutters were needed.

Not bad, I've had better ones, those where you have to cut the line all the way down to the spool.
@pawpaw if it happened again next time Ill leave Geocaching location for you.
@new2BC4bass no worry, it just a cheap #8 hybrid line. I still have a ton maybe I will do a couple more backlashes to entertain you guys again. ?

Hahaha! That was good. Bill Dance has always been a clown. Sorry to hear about what happened. Today when casting my weight and worm broke off behind me and did what your reel did, only worse. Ended my day. If it makes you feel any better I hear that even pro anglers still backlash to this day (I have'nt got to ask one...maybe one day), cause stuff happens.

Had one that was mighty close to that a month ago. I thought I'd be able to pick it out when I started on it. Been so long since I've had one that bad that I just didn't know better.
I had a backlash at least that bad back in August. I was fishing with a t-rigged senko with a 3/8 bullet weight, and the bait got caught in a bush behind me when I was casting out . I could feel the line tangle around my thumb on the cast. I didn't even mess with it. I just put the rig in the car and tied the senko on another rig.

I have the t-shirt!
Looks like you gave George Washington a haircut.
every baitcast user has been there
I always bring a second spare reel in event this happens. Less downtime, just swap reels and continue fishing.

Or just bring another rod? I know a lot of ppl do that so they dont have to re-tie, even my fishing friend, sometime he brings 3 rods with him. I, on the other hand dont like that since I just like to walk around and sometime forget the other one. Im looking into getting a rod holder where I can tie to my leg so it not in the way when fishing.
I managed to do something about as bad as that with some 20lb sniper. No choice but to cut it it was so bad. I made and underhand cast and the lure just barely caught the water.....

I fish from shore so I take 1 or 2 rods with me. I once made a 2 piece out of my Cumara casting rod when I step on it trying to land a fish. Next cast I set the hook on a 6" bass and snapped it in 2. So I cut down on the number of rods I take to the lake. Lesson learned.
A couple years ago I was up on Lac Seul with some friends. We stopped on an island for a break, and since I'd spotted a pikey looking cove as we were coming in, I grabbed a rod with a Doctor Spoon on it and headed up the shore.
I spotted a nice looking pike cruising the shallows - maybe a 30" fish, cruising the gin-clear water about 40 feet out...so I found a spot that bumped out from shore a bit, thumbed the release, and laser focused on the pike, went to make my cast.
I never noticed that the spoon had snagged a branch at the back of my backcast...
I gave it a nice snappy forward cast...it made that mess you've got up there look like a Sunday picnic.
...and it was braid.
probably coulda dug it out, but I wanted to fish, not spend the next three hours picking at a reel.
I cut it off, re-spooled and was back in action in 10 minutes.
