Just wanted some opinions on which company you think is better
I'm a big fan of Lews. I have 5 of their reels. My buddy is a die hard Abu guy and he's starting to want a Lews reel after fishing with mine.
They're both built in same factory. Pick the one that feels the best in your hands. Quality shouldn't be a concern with either.
i used to use nothing but Revo reels , made the change to Lew's and am quite happy !! Lew's reels are built with more exact tolerances , they feel more smooth , have a better braking system , and have a LOT less slop between the handle and body of the reel , Lew's are hands down a lot better reel though both have excellent customer service ...
I got 5 revo sx. I love them. I like having the same reels though all of my setups. I think they are the better all around reel. But seriously it's preference. Flip a coin. Both companies build a great product.
i really like the lews reels i have owned and do own. in fact, i have 2 more en route....
I have 4 Lews and 2 Garcias, both are smooth and hard to tell a difference. I'm very satisfied with both. My preference is determined by sale prices.
I own them both but lean more towards lews ,They fit my hands better and seem a little smoother.
I own 10 revos and like them a lot,but I bought a Lew's last year and really like how it palms. I will be buying another Lew's this spring.
I got a speed spool for $100 at Dick's a few years ago and it is by far the worst reel I have ever owned. A lot of slop, lost the smoothness after a few weeks and the drag is terrible. The smoothness comes back after a good cleaning but is short lived. Must have got a lemon or their lower end models aren't very good. Because of that experience I am reluctant to go with Lew's again, despite the great reviews that they have. I have never owned an Abu reel but have several of their rods. Their customer service has been excellent. It's just hard for me to turn away from Daiwa and Shimano when it comes to reels as I have had zero issues.

you must have got a bad one , should of called Lew's and they would of sent you a new reel , they have great reels and awesome customer service
Never owned a newer style Abu but I have 5 Lew's that I love. I don't believe you can go wrong with a Lew's.
I purchased a Lew's baitcaster to try out earlier this year. I was so impressed, I immediately sold off all of my Shimano's and replaced them with Lew's. Up to that point, all I used was Shimano. I couldn't be happier with the Lew's. I highly recommend them.
I fish Abu Garcia baitcasters and my dad fishes Lew's. We have both tried out each other's reels and both perform very well. It really just comes down to preference and which you like better. Both are historically make well made products so you really cannot go wrong with either. In all honesty they perform very similarly
Like everyone says its preference. I personally like Abu Garcia, I have 2 revo sx's and 1 orra winch. I have to say I'm very pleased with them.
Billy goats urinate on their own heads to smell more attractive to females
I prefer Lew's and have five of the Tournament Pro reels and love them. Nothing wrong with going with Abu though.

Sounds like you are an Abu Garcia man. Or maybe Lew's.

Urinating on his own head... sounds like a shimano fan to me.
I've had issues with both companies reels so both aren't perfect. That being said both were out of warranty so I had to fix them myself. My first gen 2 stx had an issue with the tension control nob and casting brakes. I lost a screw trying to fix the gen 2 in the field so I basically ruined it. I wasn't able to fix it but I was able to trade a gen 2 for a gen 3 at the dealer it was purchased from. The gen 3 stx had some casting issues after a season but cleaning fixed the issues. After further use the cast control nob no longer had the audible click and did not engage until it was about 85% screwed down so casting anything below 1/2 is a task and now the thumb bar does not engage 100% of the time. It is gritty and worn out, a new thumb bar and spacers may fix it. I'm debating fixing it but might just get a new reel. As for the lews tournament pro the issue arose from a bad bearing. Replaced it and its good as new. I have another gen 2 stx and winch that are bullet proof. I would buy a gen 2 revo over a gen 3 any day. That being said I am strictly sticking to lews as none of my other reels had issues.

that doesn't make sense, but no.
I believe that fun fact went over both of your heads.
Same parts, choose between the color options
Pick what you like best but to me lews is the best I own three lews reels at the moment an have two more in a ups truck on the way to the house. I absolutely love them. With that being said my partner ( I fish high school tourbament) is a abu guy. An I use his reels pretty regularly. But I think that lews is a better product for the money by a long shot. But go to the store an pick up both an play with them. Pick whatever you think is best.
First, allow me to say how refreshing it is to see so many members say that both companies make an excellent product and stand behind their products. I have several Abus and several Lew's. My favorite reel is the Lew's Tournament Pro. It was purchased new last spring. I also have several Abu round reels, an STX that I absolutely have NO issues with, a new BB1 Pro, and several Lew's from 15-20 years ago. Either decision you make will be a good one, as long as you are looking at reels $150 and up. I don't have any over the $200 price point, because I don't fish for a living. Pick one and enjoy yourself. Tight lines
I've felt they are mechanically very similar, but I like the feel and aesthetics of the Lew's,
They're made in the same factory. The reel "brand" takes a pre-existing template of one of the chinese brands' reels and orders a model to be made to their specifications, like a certain handle or printed name on the side plate. Lots of other brands, like Kastking and Favorite, do the exact same thing. Really, both companies price their reels similarly, so between the two, it's really a toss-up.

Wow, this thread was from 2015 that you dug up...
Get a abu 4600c3 u wont regret it ...
I have several abus. They can hold up to hard fishing with no maintenance. The corrosion resistant bearings need no maintenance. Lews reels are variations on abus. I have no idea what the insides of Lews look like, but if it’s anything like the better abus, they have to be good.

What he said.. I love my lews tournament mb i bought 3 in 2011 when they first came out i can remember there was only 4 lews reels to choose from 79.99-99.99-149.99- and a higher end one I went with the middle of the road at 149.99 which is the tournament mb. They are GREAT reels never had a problem with them and honestly never had to clean em i just like to clean them every year or so depends how much i fish a year. From there i bought some super duty reels one is a 5:1 gear ratio and I don’t believe they make it anymore and the other is a 7:1 i got for braided line. I also have more I acquired over the years but your not gonna find a bad lews product at least I haven’t yet

That's ok I had a $350 Abu MGX which became a coffee grinder on retrieves. It was a great reel prior to that. The gears just sucked. No dirt or grit in the reel either.Abu fixed it them I dumped it and bought lews.
Lew's. That is all. ABU Garcia might be quality, but they would not answer an email or answer the phone when I needed a part.
Did you account for any time zone difference? I always get right through and the staff is helpful.
I use a Lews Speed Spool on an Abu Garcia Veritas for my swimbaits. Love them both. Can't go wrong with either

Same here. I order a lot of parts from them and never had a call go unanswered. They've even been helpful enough to the point I was able to procure some parts they don't normally sell, like the stud for the anti-reverse pawl for instance. I usually add the anti-reverse pawl to reels with the IAR bearing as a backup in case the IAR gives up the ghost. The hole is already in the brake plate to accommodate it.

Yeah, email had nothing to do with time zone. I believe they had just been merged into one of the big parent companies.
