I need a new worm rod!!! 2025

fishing user avatarDINK WHISPERER reply :

Hello all!

I have been in search for a worm rod to pitch t-rigged plastics for the last couple months now. I have bought 4 rods so far and none have met my expectations! I bought a Powell Max, St. Croix Mojo, All star Platinum and a Kistler worm rod. I sold the All Star and the Kistler and will be selling the Powell and Mojo also. I need a rod in at least 7' with Heavy or extra heavy power and a fast or ex fast tip. I pretty much want a fliipin' sticks characteristics in a 7' rod. I also want the split grip handles, no fore grip feature and fuji components. Every rod so far has been very over rated in there actions and power! Can anyone recommend a rod for me or do they not make one like this yet, LOL?

fishing user avatarburleytog reply :

Kistler Helium  II LTX He2HC70  7' Heavy Fast.  Like a board it is.

fishing user avatardmac14 reply :

Try a carrot stick, or Step up to the St Croix LT, they both have the split grips. As for a good rod, I love my avid and I am sure the LT is just a step up with split grip.

fishing user avatarlv2fish reply :

The Shimano Cumara is the best hands down rod for this purpose.  Now all these people will jump on the Lomis bandwagon but they have not fished a Cumara.  You will love it and so would they.

fishing user avatarDINK WHISPERER reply :

I will not use a Carrot due to my brother's crappin' out on him in the first month! I have used a Cumara and i liked it but the blank is just so thin it makes me nervous, LOL!!! The Kistler is a bit out of my price range! I need a broomstick with a reel seat i guess, LOL!

fishing user avatarHitch reply :

Powell 705c or a Falcon head turnner.

The Powell 705C is the rod i am selling now(mentioned in the original post)! I love the rod but it is too flimsy at the tip. Way over rated IMO!!

fishing user avatarThefishy1 reply :

Check out ALX rods. My partner uses them and he loves them, its a custom rod so you can get whatever you want. Also hes been experimenting with blanks from different types of rods (like Steelhead and other trout and musky blanks) to build his rods.

fishing user avatarJeff H reply :

Shimano Crucial CRCX72H.....exactly what you are looking for.  Maybe more than you want to spend though??

Not sure about Powell, but the Dobyns 705c has one hell of a tip. Great worm rod, if you're looking for something tough. I use 733 and 734 for all my worming needs, I leave the 5 powers for jigs.

Just a thought, hope you don't take this as an insult, but when I heard flimsy, I thought maybe you had the 705cb? Cause the Dobyns 705 is nothing flimsy at all.

Good luck.

Me to if you dont have any rods in your boat tomorrow it wasnt me...

I use a dobyns 705dx,dobyns gen 2 704 and a dobyns gen 2 765 for jigs.Dobyns 703 and 704 for some worms.

fishing user avatarThe_Natural reply :

Well...a Daiwa Zillion would cure your 'floppy tip' problems. Take your current fishing rod and feed it 9 *s....now you have a Zillion. Take your pick of length....they are all extremely fast. MH=H though...seriously.

I'm not on the bandwagon with split grips, but I do have a Dobyns

Champion Series 683C. Brokeju's advice is right on the money,

the 705C is exactly what you are looking for.

8-)

fishing user avatarCatt reply :

Shimano Crucial CRC-X610MH

Length: 6' 10

Line: 10-20 lb

Lure: 3/8-3/4

Power: Medium Heavy

Action: Extra Fast

fishing user avatarbigtimfish reply :

Falcon original.

fishing user avatarCaptain Obvious reply :

Hey Dink whisperer

What was it you didn't like about the All Star, I plan on buying one in the near future when I get the cash so I'm interested in what you thought, is it just you're personal preference or did you find it lacking in a specific area??

That is very weird man! I was under the impression that Powell and Dobyns where almost identical in power/action ratings? I just don't understand how the Powell 705C is rated Mag Heavy/Extra Fast when it has less action and power than my MH/F Mojo!?! It's a shame because i really like the rod too. I am at a loss for ideas right now! I have been through so many rods that claim Heavy/Fast that i am scared to order another guys!!!! >:)

Do you think that maybe i just expect/want too much from a rod? All my research shows that Powell and Dobyns are identical in power/action. If that is so and you find it to be very powerful and have a stiff tip than it's just me!

fishing user avatarJeff H reply :

Sounds like you should start looking at Musky rods.

I actually did but they where a little too much power for me, LOL!!!  ;D

fishing user avatarHammer 4 reply :

I know a guy that uses a Salmon rod for worms, although it's a 8' spinnin rod.

fishing user avatarflipinstick88 reply :

How about a St. Croix LTBC73XHF ?? :-?

fishing user avatarDINK WHISPERER reply :

Anyone try the Kistler Argon Flip n' Pitch 7'1" Heavy?

fishing user avatarChris at Tech reply :

I like my Gen 1 Dobyns 704C (H, XF) and my Daiwa Zillion 6'9" (MH, XF)

But like The_Natural said, the Zillions are underrated. MH does = H.  And they make a 7' MH that may better suit your needs.

fishing user avatarDINK WHISPERER reply :

I played with a Kistler Magnesium TS jig n toad rod at BPS today that was pretty sweet! I might get that one.

fishing user avatarbooneangler reply :

if you dont like the cumara you might want to think about the zillion or get a Loomis Mossyback. Also Fenwick makes a Pitchin Stick in around the size you are ooking for in the Elite rod's.

fishing user avatarDINK WHISPERER reply :

I tried the Elite series and did not like them! I am however in the process of either getting the MossyBack or a custom rod with Loomis blank. Just got to find a reputable builder!

fishing user avatarflechero reply :

I or a custom rod with Loomis blank.

Save your money...  if what you said earlier about a flimsy tip is really how you feel, you probably won't like Loomis blanks.  The tips are actually very light (we say delicate) for the power rods, and they are that way by design.  If you want the heavier feeling tip, go St. Croix.

REALLY, thanks for the heads up man! What St. Croix would you recommend that has a stout backbone and stiff tip in the 7' range? I like the Mojo rods power and action but i want Fuji guides!

fishing user avatarflechero reply :

DW,

I'm not up on the current lines components. (not sure which ones come with what guides) But for blanks- depending on how much backbone and tip you want... I use a 4C70HF blank as my t-rig rod. I built it for heavy t-rig and lakes with bigger fish and heavier cover but I've really grown fond of it for everyday use. It's a lot of backbone and tip- most here wouldn't like it for t-rigs.

I had been planning to build either a 4C70MHF or a 5C70MHF to use as a primary t-rig rod but I'm re-thinking that now. I don't mind being overpowered for Belton fish, and I like using one rod for any t-rig situation. If I ever needed it, this rod will easily double as a c-rig, jig or frog rod with no trouble at all.

You should contact Reel Mech to see if he has any 7' H blanks in stock... If he's taking internet orders these days, you'd be hard pressed to find a better builder or price. If he's not, maybe he'll build one as his next "rack rod" :)

I tried contacting him but he seemed to not want to work with me! He said i would be better off finding a local builder to work with me! I believe he is building rods right now though. Do you build them? If you find the 4C70HF to much than it would be perfect for me. That is what i have been looking for the last 6 months or so!

fishing user avatarflechero reply :

Local is usually better, when it's an option.  Have you looked at a 7' Heavy St. Croix at your local dealer and see if it feels right?  That's where you should start.

From there, you have the option of the factory rod or finding a builder...

I do build- but not taking any orders these days.  I'm hoping things will settle down and I can start again next year.  If you have no luck finding someone locally, PM me and I'll make an inquiry for you.  I know a guy that might be able to take on an additional client. (he builds part time)

fishing user avatarDINK WHISPERER reply :

PM sent

fishing user avatar.RM. reply :

DW, I am sorry if I came across like I didn't want to work with you.

I also don't do business through PM's, you said you read my site but you never e-mailed me through the site and page I sent you to......

You also didn't like the burl we use and wanted standard cork. The site stated we only built in burl...

Your PM's said you knew what you wanted (Loomis), I tried to explain that Loomis building blanks don't offer what you wanted (Mossy Back) to builders.

I also spotted a post of yours that stated you were probably going to pick up a Kistler Magnesium TS...

This is when we decided to get a list of reputable builders (from TackleWorks) in your state that you could contact for help deciding or building your worm rod for you.

It would save you a butt load of change in shipping insurance and handling.

Sorry.....  :)

fishing user avatarDINK WHISPERER reply :

No worries, i completely understand what you mean. I had no idea you didn't deal through PMs, sorry. I changed my mind on the Kistler as well. I am all over the place with my decisions right now, LOL! It's just that i am VERY picky and specific about my jig/worm rod. THANKS for all the help you provided though. I now know a little more about rod building.

:)

fishing user avatarHammer 4 reply :

So ..Dink, you gonna get a kustom rod, or one of them store bought ones..? :)

fishing user avatarDINK WHISPERER reply :

I am back and forth with ALX rods right now and i really like what i see! I am doing some research on the Rogue blanks he uses first. I really liked the sound of the Shimano Crucial CRC-X72H but i want split grip handle!    :)

fishing user avatarbobdogg17 reply :

I have a Shimano Crucial and Cumara. Crucial for spinning gear, cumara for casting. If you want the split handle, go for the cumara. I just got one recently, but love it! :)

fishing user avatarBig O Tires Angler reply :

I don't understand why you haven't picked up a Zillion rod yet...I'm pretty sure you'll be happy with it...

fishing user avatarCavfirst reply :

Have you tried the old Tom Mann Jr signature All Star classic Carolina Rig Rod you could pick them up at Sports Academy for like 50 Bucks "Broom Stick" but still fairly sensitve for the price.  They were also very durable I whooped snakes, wasps and all kinda of ugly creatures with mine back in the day flippn were I ought not be Flippn :)
