Quantum Reels 2024

fishing user avatarbassdocktor reply :

I have to ask. Why does doesn't anyone seem to be buyinng/asking about quantum. I have 6 of them and they are all great. I know there are a bunch of people on here with the accurist and the ones exclusive to DICKS. I just looked back through about the last 6 pages saw 1 post and finnally decided to find out why.

fishing user avatarvicdotcom reply :

A lot of people have a bad impression of Quantum.  From what I hear it was much deserved and they put out a lot of junk for a while.  That stigma sticks for a while.  The company changed hands since then but still unable to throw out the stigma.  I myself like the new quantums and I have purchased them at the suggestion of my rod and reel shop and I havent been dissappointed since.

fishing user avatarbassdocktor reply :

That atleast would make sense I love the new energies that I bought for this year. Very smooth couldn't be happier.

fishing user avatarvicdotcom reply :

Quantum isnt even listed on the poll one the homepage for best reels I noticed.  Not that it would have been my first vote... but still.

Vic

fishing user avatarswimz88 reply :

i love my accurist, it's a good price, and casts nice.

fishing user avatarlubina reply :

I have been using Quantums for a long time without any major problem and I currently have 2 Accurist and 2 Energy 861 that I love, one thing, they are heavier than most modern reels in the market, I have upgraded the ball bearing of mine, worth every penny of the $ 16.00 I invested.

That is why I will never buy another Quantum.  I bought my first and last Quantum about 14 years ago, it was the biggest piece of junk I have ever owned.

fishing user avatarG3 Fan reply :

I've wondered the same thing. I am amazed at how brand loyal some people are I don't think it is a bad thing it just surprises me. If I were making a living at fishing I would probably have everything from the same mfg. just for ease of use and parts swapping etc. But since I fish for fun I enjoy trying different companies products.

I have a bunch of Quantum products and I haven't been disappointed. I have had one Accurist that seems to break one way bearing sleeves on a regular basis, it is on it's third one now.

I think Quantum is trying hard to gain marketshare, I think their PT Club is a great idea. I haven't found another company that has a rewards program for buying their products. I also think their website is top notch for a fishing company, there is a lot of good information there and it is easy to navigate. Some companies really should put more effort into their online image. I can think of a few that the website is still lists the 2005 or 2006 catalogs or products.

With that being said, I did a little test over the winter. I sent an email to most of the major mfgs of tackle. I just asked a simple question to see if they would reply trying to get a feel for customer service and to help me decide what brand my next purchase would be. That idea backfired every email I sent was answered within two business days. So I guess the moral is buy what you like in the price range you can afford.

fishing user avatarbasser89 reply :

I've been using Quantum's for about 10 years now. I've only had a problem with one (an Accurist PT and the failure was one I caused). Love the Accurists (I have 6)! Have two Energy PT's as well! Great reels IMO and will buy Quantum again when I need another reel!  ;)

Quantum falls under the Zebco name, that's probably why it wasn't on the poll.

fishing user avatarfrogtog reply :

I have been useing Quantum for fifteen years and have had very few problems

with them. I just bought 15 new energys this year and they should last me atleast 5 years before I have to replace them. The 1310 MG was one of the best reels they made for C rigs. What few problems I have had, I would pack the reel up and seen it back and they would send it back to me in new shape or I would recieve a new reel. ( Mabe I'am just LUCKY ) 8-)

fishing user avatarbassdocktor reply :

Actually after using them side by side with my old curados I like the new energies better. Personally don't even notice the weight difference.

fishing user avatarDeuceu72 reply :

I love Quantum! I only have 1 reel that isnt a Quantum and its the Daiwa Viento. I will always have Quantum reels on my rods.

fishing user avatarroadwarrior reply :

Hmm...

I was thinking outdated technology, low quality components, loose tolerances, poor craftmanship, a reputation for unreliability and an indistinguished look.

I think David Green, ReelMech, services these reels. I would be interested in reading his review.

p.s. I couldn't tell if frogtog was joking, if he was making fun of them or if he was serious. If it was an endorsement, I missed the point. Buying fifteen reels hoping they (as a group) might last five years or just sending them in occasionally because they break is NOTHING I want to be using.

fishing user avatarlubina reply :

Hmm...

I was thinking outdated technology,

Are you thinking " Curado " ? ;D ;D ;D

fishing user avatarroadwarrior reply :

The Steez, Revo, Curado and Citica are "all new" this year.

fishing user avatarbassdocktor reply :

Yes those reels are new but the Energies and Tour series are relatiely new too. Don't get me wrong most of my reels are still the old curados but lately, I've picked up alot of Diawas and Shimanos that just haven't felt good. I've tried adjusting them and they haven't been just display models, some have been right out of the boxes. Also, I may be wrong but didn't the new curados increase in weight?

I'm not trying to see which is better because there are too many strong opinions to start that arguement and it  has kinda been done here multiple times. Plus some of it is just preference. I just wanted to see why people aren't really using Quantum. Thanks to some of the guys here I'm starting to see it is based on Quantums past.

Nada, Ohno, Nope, no reel reviews from me anymore I refuse to get sucked into any potentially loaded discussions anymore.

I have learned a very valuable lesson in the last few weeks. I will give freely any problem solving info that I can, but no more of my opinions on any reels.

I'll pass and just site back and watch..  8-)

Hmm...

RW I do some serious fishing. I probbly don't take the best care of my reels.

No I was'nt endorseing them I have to pay like every one else. I just like the reels. Wasn't trying to brag either just that sometimes I go way out on buying

stuff. Just like that secret bait that was mention on the forum. Well I order a pack and won money the first time I used them. So guess what I just ordered 100 packs of them. I have been blessed in life, I have a good wife and I got my

son grown and went into a landscaping business back when no one else was willing to do that hard work and I did well and I thank my Lord for that. Well I guess I telling you more than you want to know, so I'll quit for know.

fishing user avatarguest reply :

I have looked and seriously considered a few, but always found somethng I liked better.

I gotta admit that "hot sauce" thing really turns me off.  It just reeks of gimmick to me.

I want my hot sauce on my taco's not in my reels.

fishing user avatarswitz reply :

I'm with Avid--hot sauce and reels??....seems better suited for food.  I'm kinda skeptical too.

fishing user avatarFishTank reply :

Overall I like Quatuam reels.  I have to Energy Pti-a 20 spinning reels and I have had no problems.  They cast well, they're smooth, and so far they have taken a beating.

I have to admit, I am also skeptical of the hot sauce.  I use it strictly on these two reels and nothing else.  The oil seems to seperate from the red dye but all you have to do is wipe it away.  One other thing about hot sauce is, less is better.  One little drop and that's it.

fishing user avatarlubina reply :

--hot sauce and reels??....

No red dye in my reels either ;)

fishing user avatarRoLo reply :

I haven't purchased a Quantum reel in about 15 years, so I'm a far cry from updated information on Quantum reels.

Around 1990 I purchased two Quantum casting reels for pike fishing in Lake Huron, Ontario.

While pumping a good-sized pike to the boat, the thumb-bar lost communication with the reel handle,

as a result, the spool would not properly engage (I wound-up losing that pike).

Granted, the reel was still under warranty, but I wasn't interested in being the unproud owner

of slapdash workmanship (As a tool & die maker I know that failure of this nature is not excusable).

So instead of making one trip back to the manufacturer, that Quantum reel made two trips.

It made one short trip to the dumpster, and another trip to my Lifetime Blackball List.

As it happens, Quantum was the only reel to ever make that elite list  :;)

I with you ReelMech NO MORE openion on rods, reels, line or tackle

fishing user avatar.ghoti. reply :

I have a bunch of PT's, both spinning and casting models. I have a bunch of Daiwa reels, both spinning and casting. I also have some Shimano reels, both spinning and casting. The only thing I'll say is they all can, and do  make a clunker from time to time. And, they all make very good reels. If you buy on the low end of the price scale, you're gonna get what you pay for.

Out of all the reels I have, the ones I use the most are the Energy PT and Daiwa Millionaire casting reels and the Daiwa Capricorn spinning reels. If my wife had not decided that the PT spinning reels were "hers", I'd probably be using them instead of the Daiwa's.

The Quantum PT reels, both spinning and casting models, are very good values.

Cheers,

GK

fishing user avatarblade reply :

Quantums are heavy pieces of junk...  Shimano reels on kistler rods all the way.

fishing user avatarbassdocktor reply :

Blade,

Saying they are heavy pieces of junk really doesn't explain why Quantums aren't as popular as people giving past bad experiences.

As far as them being heavy check the specs. Except for the 100 series the Curados which are popular here are actually.2oz heaver than the Energy series. Actually if you want to look at the Citica again the Quantum is lighter.

I'm not defending Quantum because I like the Shimanos I have and have had but I'm just looking to see why they aren't as popular.

fishing user avatarbassnleo reply :

I own 8 Quantum Accursits, various models, always have been reliable for me.

fishing user avatar.ghoti. reply :

I'd speculate that Quantum's bad rap stems form their efforts to cover the entire market spectrum. They produce reels at all price points. The low end reels are made for the occasional fisherman, who doesn't see the need for expensive gear when he only fishes once or twice a year. They're also for kid's toys. I suspect that the people who claim Quantum makes junk had one of these low end reels once upon a time, treated it like it deserved, and got what they paid for. Some may also have had one those dreadful Hypercast spinning reels. Who knows. I'd hazard a guess that the folks who do most of the bad-mouthing haven't actually used one of the PT series reels. The Energy PT baitcaster compares quite favorably with the Daiwa Zillion and the Chronarch. If they were all the same price, I'd probably go for the Daiwa. But they're not. The PT is quite a bit less.

This is such a subjective topic, I'm about to agree with ReelMech, and stop responding to these things.

Cheers,

GK

fishing user avatarfish-fighting-illini reply :

I think they've made some marketing snafu's. The "hot sauce" thing makes me think they are more interested in making money off of oil than a good fishing reel.

The alignment of Zebco is a major mistake in my opinion. Fisherman ( bass ones in particular ) are a very proud bunch of their equipment. Thinking they "might" be fishing with a Zebco is a big no no even if the product was a good one.

All that said my first and only baitcaster is a Quantum Mantra,  has held up very well and has been great for me to learn on. I paid $80 for it several years ago and almost wish some would come up cheap on e-bay to sneak a good buy.

I am like one of the other posters though and like to try other brands in my price-range to compare ( within reason ).

fishing user avatarReplica. reply :

About 14 years ago I bought two cheap 40 dollar spinning reels. One was a quantum and one was a shimano. The quantum barely lasted two years and the shimano still works to this day. Which reel would you buy?. I figure if shimanos cheap reels are built better why wouldn't thier more expensive reels be better.

I have nothing against people who like quantum, but honestly which reel would you buy.

- this is additional information for my previous post, I am not trying to pile on the bashing of quantum.

fishing user avatarvicdotcom reply :

I see that many of the people who have qualms with quantum reels have tried them about 14-15 years ago.  At least that is what I have read here.  Honestly for me, 15 years is a long time and from that time a lot of changes can happen.  But I can also understand how people wouldnt want to be burned 2x by the same company.  But a lot of changes can be made in a decade and a half I would think.

Vic

fishing user avataredbassmaster reply :

I have always used Shimano, until about 5 years ago I bought an Okuma. I have picked up an accurist and some other Quantums and they just feel cheaper. The colors look awesome but I think that quality wise Shimano is better. As far as Okuma, I now own three of their reels and honestly, they give Shimano a run for their money. Shimano #1 Okuma #2

The Chrysler 300 looks real nice, but I would buy an Altima for whats under the hood.

I owned last year's Energy PT's.  I now own all Shimano's.  I have to disagree with you.  They are in a different class.  I will keep my Shimano's.

Just one man's humble opinion though... I've said it before... one man's junk is another man's treasure.   Only one person has to decide.

fishing user avatarrvrnr64 reply :

I also think Quantums relationship to Zebco is a big hinderance. I had a Zebco 33 many moons ago and it was ok for a kid to get started on but wouldn't buy one now. I will say though, I just got back from Dicks Sporting goods and looked at both the Quantum Inferno and the Shimano Sahara and couldn't decide on which to get so I came back home and got on here. The Quantum is smooth.  As far as getting into which product is better I think debate is not only informative but also healthy. So if you want to debate go to my post about Quantum vs Shimano and let's get it on. We can throw a few more brands in there if you like. I'd like to see what everyone thinks. BTW, I'm using the new Mitchell 300 X's right now.

fishing user avatarfishingchef80 reply :

I have the inferno spinning reel and it is real smooth i like it a lot and for 40 bucks you cant beat it IMO but whatever i dont have 10 combos to compare it to. Harley Davidson almost went out of business for putting out shotty bikes and found that they just needed to stick with what got em there so....

fishing user avatarbassdocktor reply :

Well guys I think I got my answer as far as why people stay away from Quantum. It seems to come down to past experiences, stigmas (Zebco), and some brand loyalty. It will be interesting to see if anymore opinions or ideas get added.

Thanks guys,

bassdocktor

fishing user avatarj-fox.4 reply :

hey all,

my post might be somewhat biased, but here goes nothing. the energy pt was the first "quality" baitcaster that i bought in my life (last summer). I purchased it after reading a few reviews and with the guidance of my local bait shop. The 6.3:1 pt is an amazing reel, i love it. It has earned my confidence. The reel, although somewhat heavy, feels strong and just like quality in my hand. Since then, i've purchased the "burner" gear ratio of the energy pt and my second energy is as amazing for me as the first. Like i said, the quantum baitcasters are really the only quality reel i have experience with, but i have no problem giving the quantum brand my full reccommendation for baitcasters.

I'm not quite sure of their spinning reels thus far. I purchased the energy pti this winter and bought my first g-loomis rod for it (the mossyback). I've heard that they redesigned the bail system for the 2007 reels. About one quarter of the time the line does not fall onto the bail roller after casting. several times early in the reels career, i've had a fish take my lure, i set the hook, and the bail flies open because the line was on the bail wire. i'm trying to fix the problem on my reel, i've filed down the roller and put some new line on and it has seemed to help. if anyone has had this problem or knows of a solution, i would love to know. the pti is a high quality reel, but i can't give it my full endorsement until i resolve this problem completely.

take it easy fellas.
