What Are Y'all Throwing The New-Ish Kvd 8.0 On? 2025

fishing user avatarCatch and Grease reply :

I was very close to buying a couple today with the sales on TW but didn't know if my rod could handle them... I was gonna try fishing them on a MH/F with 50lb braid that's rated for 1/4oz - 3/4oz baits. I know the 8.0 is 3/4oz so it'd be at the top weight range for my rod. I think it would be okay for fishing them but wasn't 100% confident... What are y'all throwing it on?

I'd try a 7'MH/F but with a mono or fluoro instead of braid. You'll already be pulling the bait away faster than with a regular crankbait rod because of the fast action, and I think the braid would just be too much. That's just me though. It's still up to you.

7' 6" MH/F flipping stick and 20lb Pline. It's a big, big squarebill that I could probably throw on my deep cranking rod but I don't want to fish it on 10lb test and like to fish it around heavier cover like any other squarebill so the big rod should help move fish.

fishing user avatarGrantman83 reply :

If I were gonna get them I'd probably use my champ 734 until i got the 706cb. You would need something with a lot of power

An Academy Ethos rod

fishing user avatarsmalljaw67 reply :

When you get into big cranks with big hooks, size 1 or bigger, a cranking rod is no longer needed as the big hooks penetrate and you actually need more backbone to drive the hooks into the fish's mouth. That said, don't be afraid to use a heavy power rod with the magnum square bill.

Very under rated rods but very nice rods at a really good price.

fishing user avatargulfcaptain reply :

I'd probably throw it on a 7'6"MH older BPS Bionic rod or would look into getting one of their graphite series IM6 7'6"H rods.  The IM6 is a bit softer then IM8 but still has the power needed with the larger bait.

Yup, my papa broke his MH/F so I bought him a ethos MH/F and he loves it for swim jigs...

fishing user avatargulfcaptain reply :

Have one at home.  It doesn't get used as much as it used to though. Still a good rod.

fishing user avatarJrob78 reply :

I bought a couple but haven't thrown one yet.  I plan to use my c-rig rod.  7'6" HF but with a soft tip.

Will it get down to 5ft on 20# line?

fishing user avatarGrantman83 reply :

I just listened to a podcast where hackney said it will dive 10ft on 20lb fluoro. That's part of what he won pickwick on. 20lb fluoro on a 300 sized reel and his flippin stick

Hmmm, to me that seems a little far fetched... I would hope it would run 5 feet or less on 20lb line.

Same Rod I fish all my other squarebills on, TBC78MHM w/ 15lb Tatsu.

Dobyns Champion 805cb w/16lb sunline sniper.

10' sounds about right to me.  That's about what the big Lucky Craft version runs.

They have a pretty big bill on them and will easily get down deeper than 5' on 20lb test. I'm using copolymer, but wouldn't be surprised if they do hit 10' with fluoro. You can kind of get an idea how big the bill is in this side by side picture of an 8.0 and 1.5 size squarebill

Welp, I guess I won't be buying them then... The whole reason I wanted them is because the TW website says it runs 3-7 feet. I would love a squarebill crank I could present in that 2-3 foot range that is giganormous...

fishing user avatarJ Francho reply :

I just got a rod in that could handle this bait pretty well: Pinnacle Perfecta DHC5 Micro Casting Rod 7'11" MH Crank.

I don't think your going to get more than around 20" out of that bait.  At least I can't, even burning it.

fishing user avatarJ Francho reply :

And a 3/4 oz. bait isn't really all that monstrous.  I throw that size all day long on my Avid AVC70MHM cranking stick.

Mine runs 3-4 ft on 16ob sniper.

I watched Hackney fish this tournament on Championship day and the spot he was fishing was 4-5 ft deep. He fished this spot the whole time so he must have tested the 8.0 on a different spot if he felt it hit 10ft on 20 lb fluoro. Every fish I saw him catch came on a jig but I'm sure he caught some on the 8.0 too. In my experience, throwing this bait on a 7'4" medium heavy glass crankin rod with 15 lb fluoro, it will go down to 6-7 ft. And that bait on the glass crankin rod casts a good 35 yards which is plenty for it to get down close to maximum depth. I haven't tried long-lining or dipping my rod tip under the water to get it deeper tho...

Edit: And I didn't mean that in a ***** kind of way Grantman83 lol didn't want you to think I was being like that.

fishing user avatarTrapperJ reply :

7'6" MH Duckett Ghost seemed to work fine for me and dang these 8.0 are huuuuuuuuge.
