Shimano or Abu Garcia Bait Caster 2024

Hey Gang,

I am new to the bait caster world, and need some advice.

I am a "Shimano Guy," if you will. I have a couple of Shimano spinning reels (favorite being my Stradic 4000FG). But for some time now I have debating a bait caster. I have spoken to quite a few different people and decided that it would be a good investment.

Now comes the grueling task of picking the proper reel for me. I am almost sold on the Shimano Curado 201E7, but the Abu Garcia REVO has caught my eye as well.

Does anyone have any words of wisdom for the young wipper-snapper? I am open to other ideas, suggestions or feedback that you may feel necessary to aid me in my cause. I am willing to spend $200, so anything under that, perhaps a little over if you are that much more confident in a particular reel.

Theres really only 2 manufacturers you should consider...Daiwa & Shimano. Which one all depends on what you expect the reel to do. A Curado is not going to do well with light stuff,you will need a baitcaster with a light spool for that type of work. Shimano has a few choices.,unfortunately the prices get up there. The Chronarch and the Core will throw light stuff well.,especially the Core. Daiwa has the Sol. If you don't intend to throw small light stuff, a Curado is fine.

I like them both, I have 2-STX's & 1 E7 and several past generation Curado's. That being said the Curado is the one I would choose if I had the choice of only one.

You are going to get a lot of opinions on this one.

I have tried the curado line from Shimano and did not like it one bit. I tried and started with the Abu garcia revo s models and fell in love with them. I now only fish the stx line of revos. I also enjoy the BPS johnny morris sig series, not as nice as stx but less expensive and still a good reel.

Its all about preference, Im sure the shimano purists will hang me!

I like both and fish and own both. So it doesn't matter. Get what you like and can fit in your budget. Or get one of each and find out for yourself.

I had the Curado 201E7 with orange seals and I just picked up a new 2010 Revo STX. They are both nice reels but I think I like the Revo just a tad more. What also is nice is the wileyX sunglasses they are offering with the abu's. Either one would be a good choice.

yes the curado is a great choice for a reel. And what do you mean by pikesnogle that the curado can't cast light weight baits. I use it especially for fishing weightless plastics. In my opinion it is a very good reel.

I have two revo's, they run smooth and cast well. I can only give my input on abu, but I'm almost positive both are good reels, and you can't really go wrong either way. It's more the fisherman than the reel anyways when youre talking quality reels

I've been on a Shimano-bot binge lately. Just got an 201e7 via trade. Used it the last 3 fishing trips and I love it. Also have an '09 Revo PRM, love it as well. Both are easy to palm, smooth, and casts great. Don't overlook the Fuego or Sol. Good luck and have fun with your choice.

I own both and there really is no wrong answer. In my hand the revo sx can outcast the curado by a good 20'+ with 5/8 spinnerbait , but lighter baits go to the curado (the revo is no slouch).

The curado is much lighter and sits lower on the rod, which is a factor for some.

The only thing that stands out for me is the dual brakeing available on some of the revos, being a beginner I would advise you to consider that. It is the most user friendly braking system in existence.

One thing to consider with all the recommendations are these reels being compared equally? Rods, line, lures and reels that are equivalent to each other? Lets give a good comparison There is no way you can compare a Core51 to a Revo SX. Each of these brands of reels are EXCELLENT, it's all in what you want, and ultimately how much you want to spend. Either you can go with NIB or you can get a slightly used one and be just as happy if the reel was maintained properly.

Snogle, get the Shimano. That way, when you get frustrated so bad, you feel like throwing it away, you won't be telling yourself you should have gotten the Shimano since all of your other reels are Shimano.

Your first baitcaster will be tough, keep at it, get someone to help, you'll figure it out.

Well I'll tell you what he did, as he's my fishing buddy. He went out and bought a Curado, I went out and bought a Revo S. So, we now have both sides. I'm sure many hours of arguing will go on over which one is better.

lots of good quality reels in that price range. @ the 200 dollar price point... all the manufacturers have a great reel.

I am convinced this argument is based on personal preference, and I think you get used to what you learn on. I learned how to use a baitcasting reel on an stx, and my father learned on a citica. nowadays, he cannot use anything but a citica or a curado, and I prefer the abu garcia reels over the shimano ones, even though I swear by shimano rods. go figure

IMO Ilike ABU, but Shimano makes great stuff! It,s all about personal preferences. (But puttin a revo on a Shimano rod just seems wrong. The Abu Winch is my personal favorite reel I've ever owned paired it with a kistler(E-Bay) and WOW I love that combo! Just my 2cent.

Shimano Curado 200e7 (201e7 for lefty's). These retail for $179.

Won't cast light baits??? HA! I'd like to see someone put a Curado against any of the beefy, sluggish Revo's and try to cast a 4" worm and 1/8oz weight.

Oops, sorry. Revo's are great reels also, just can't cast light stuff well. If you were just going to use your reel for heavy jigs and fishing the grass than I'd recommend a Revo. But for all-around? Curado E7 all the way.

go with the curado... ive always been a shimano guy but recently bought a revo s and a revo sx.. let me say that the revos are great reels but they dont compare to my cores and curados

I'd go w/ Shimano. I purchased a couple of Revo STX's and love the drag power on their guys but they felt bulky and heavy.

I have both and love both. Granted I did not like the older Revos but the new 2010 Revos are very nice. You can't go wrong with either one. Both are exellent reels.

I have the Curado E series reel and also the revo STX.I even have the Daiwa Fuego.

I have nothing bad to say about any of those reels.They are all great reels.However i will say this...the Curado E has a slight advanage for people new in the baitcasting world.It's just a tad bit easier to use IMO. The Revo line is coming out with the duel braking system...which I'd bet is going to help alot.

I'm not brand loyal at all $200 is going to get anybody a great reel in those brands..... ;D

Thank you to everyone. I really appreciate everyone's input.

I ended up with the Shimano Curado 201E7, and I love it. It took me a full day of casting to get used to it. But no more backlashes ;D. It is sooo smooth, I will never buy another spinning reel again.

I think that the next reel is the Abu REVO!

Congrats on your purchase. Baitcaster's are addicting. I just started with a Revo SX. Its all I want to throw but I still break out the spinning gear when the time calls for it.
