Saw these on TW today. They sure look sleek but I hated the Skeet Reese rods they offer. They have a good selection of square bill rods in this series which is cool. I guess I missed the video of these at ICAST. Anyone going to try one of these?
Wright & McGill Rick Clunn S-Glass Reaction Rods
LOL @ The great quality control on these rods. The reel seat hood is upside down!
OMG, that is hilarious!!!
I got my first good look at a Skeet Reese rod the other day. The rod felt OK, but it sure didn't feel like $90 to me. I guess it's designed to feel that way, but it hardly had any backbone at all. The line guides were rough on it also. I was not impressed. If this is what I can expect from Wright and McGill then I won't be trying one of these either.
hahaha thats pretty funny

So does that mean in your thought that Clunn may have took a step backwards from the BPS RCX or still to early to tell? and thanks for the input Rooster! Can you make a comparison to the Clunn version to the Skeet Reese itself?
In my thoughts, very definitely yes, he took a step backwards. BPS rods are quality. They may not be in line with a G-Loomis, but they are good rods, none the less.
BUT it should be noted that I have not handled one of these so I'm only speculating based on what the Skeet Reese rod was like. Being made by the same outfit though I can't imagine much better quality on the Clunn rod. I looked at Skeet's rod and the lineguides on it were awful. The spinning rod had double footed guides, which I do not like for spinning rods. Seems it would make the rod too stiff in places and also it keeps the line guide ring too close to the blank and that lets line slap the blank as it comes off the reel. That would effect cast distance. AND, the line guides were rough too. There were places in them that would have damaged line as it passed up the blank and out. For $90, I would have expected a LOT more. I didn't like the blank either. It was WAY too limber. No backbone. That might be fine for some things but not much that I'd do with it. Then that horrid yellow color isn't helping it either. At least the Clunn rod won't have that. I read where it said it has rubber grips though. What's up with that??

HAHA I didn't even notice that!
Wait until you see the reel that Rick designed to fit on that reel seat !!! He is such an innovator.
Clunn is one of the most successful tournament fishermen of all time. I somehow acquired one of his BassPro signature rods a few years ago and was dismayed at its weight and lack of sensitivity. I think my wife uses it as a tomato stake in the backyard nowadays and it does a fine job in that role. So color me skeptical about any other RC signature rod. Fool me once.....etc
All I'll say is that they're far more pleasant in hand than the Reese rods.
The whippy action of the Reese W&M (which I don't care for at all) must be by design, but just because it works for Reese (VanDam.....) doesn't mean it's for everyone. Bass Pros are like NASCAR drivers in that they really work in advertising. A lot of them don't use sponsor's products exclusively, or I suspect at all in some cases. A reel seat mis-aligned by 180* getting through QC is bad enough, but to post the pic in advertising? Gotta make you wonder what's going on over there.
Yeah, it does worry me about the quality aspect when they put a picture of a rod that isn't put together correctly. I do like a limber crankbait rod but I can't let go of my 4 older model BPS crankin sticks. Very forgiving to let the fish take the crankbait and they have never failed me yet.
That isn't a picture by their marketing/ad division, *** takes it's own pictures. I bet you can over tighten the hood without a reel, and spin it 180*.
I'm not commenting on the quality or lack of on the rod, but this is only a picture, akin to a typing typo that somehow was overlooked. I would not buy any rod based solely on a picture, if i can't see it in person I'm not interested.
It wouldn't matter if the hood was in the correct position, the rod would still look like a bag of ***.
This pic reminds me of MiniTruckin magazine back in the mid 80's.
Hideous.

Yea I didn't notice this either till you posted it. That is ugly.

LOL I remember those "MiniTruckin" mags and true it does look just like one of those cover trucks.
I kinda like the cracked affect on the blank. It also looks like the inserts on the guides are the quantum energy colors.
I will say one good thing about it's looks, the translucent thread wraps are kinda cool, just not on that blank with those guide inserts. Yuck. Where is your taste RC?
Everyone will know who's using them on the water.
I like the way the colors look but I'm not sure I like it on a rod. Would look good on a "mini truck" though.
Dare I say it....looks like a "girl's rod".
That is one fulgy rod.
they are 49.99 now on tw
I'm thinking about buying one for deep divers since it won't be used much but I've not heard much good from this rod. But at $50 I may try it.
I don't really like the W&M Reese rods other than the 7' and 7'10" crankbait rods. If you fish in current (rivers) they are great for medium and deep cranks and can double up for trolling #9 shad raps for 'eyes. For 50 bucks I'm half tempted to try one of the RC squarebill rods.
Appears to be pretty much the same rod as the Blair Wiggins s-curved signature series rods. I am seeing this rod all over the place, 100% (that's everyone I've talked to) just loves this rod. I have not heard a negative comment yet, my only apprehension is split grip and no foregrip, but I may succumb, very tempting as I've seen the rod in action catching snook and crevelles. Built with t-glass, carbon yarn, graphite and PBO fiber, whatever that is. Not a recommendation, merely an observation.
I've checked out their flats rods too and at face value seemed too bulky to me, but on the water it may be no issue.
Not knowing this before I discovered W/M owns trokar, eagle claw and some other brands.
X2 on the 7' and 7'10" crankbait rods of Skeets--I have found them to be pretty good rods for my crankbait fishing---only 2 iI have though can not commrnt on the other rods in his lineOn 12/21/2012 at 1:37 PM, BradH said:I don't really like the W&M Reese rods other than the 7' and 7'10" crankbait rods. Yeah that buggy whip action on the front half of the rod really saves your butt when a smallmouth jumps unloading the rod or rushes into or out of heavy current. I've got other crankbait rods but those 2 are in the boat when I fish rivers. I think the rest of the rods in the line are a little heavy for the action they produce. The house brand BPS rods in the same price range seem more sensitive to me for the jig and worm type rods.
I bit the bullet and ordered the RC jerkbait rod for my Dad for Christmas. I'll report back what I think of it.

Yeah............I'm going to say BIG thumbs down on the RC W&M jerkbait rod. Way too lazy in the action department. It would however be a great rod for medium squarebills & shallow divers around rocks or light cover. I'll remain neutral on the looks. It's not what I call pretty but for $50 I won't complain. If you have neon lights under your Honda Civic with a giant wing on the back you will love it . After playing with this thing I'd say the squarebill and deep crank rods should be winners at $50 but the jerkbait rod is a dud unless you want to fish squarebills with it. I'd say too slow for lipless too.

In his wallet
I have never fished with the Rick Clunn rods, and at 50 bucks it would be hard to go wrong. I have handled a few of the crankbait rods, and they are extremely heavy. Noticeably heavy. Did I mention that they felt really heavy in hand???
Like I said, I have never fished with one, and they may fish like a dream.
I have not fished or owned a glass rod in a long long time, but just as a casual bystander, I have picked up and handled the current glass rod offerings, including the Clunn rod talked about in this thread, as well as the Skeet Reese W&M glass rods, and the St Croix Mojo glass rods. The Croix's, just based on "in store, off the rack feel" are WAY better rods IMHO. The clunn and reese rods are very VERY heavy, and look and feel "cheap" to me. In fact I don't know that if they were giving them away if I would take one. I would rather have the BPS brand cranking sticks or any of the newer Shimano crankbait rods (Sellus, Convergance, Clarus) for a sub $100 cranking rod than either of them.

I will give a big X2 on this one. I was actually thinking of gettin one before I handled it in the store. I swear it felt like they filled the inside with lead. After handling it there was no way I was spending money on it.
