I bring around 12 rods with me on the boat when I go out. Sometimes I don't even pick up some of them if I hit a pattern that's working. Do you guys bring that many rods or do you bring less and tie diffrent baits? My thought is that I just need to pick up a diffrent rod to try a diffrent technique rather than changing baits. What do you guys do?
So far this year 2 rods
I carry 5 normally:
Sometimes I add a M casting.
If you have the room (and that many rods) and it works for you, I say stick with it. Personally, five rods suit my needs anytime I'm not zeroed in on a general pattern.
i got 8
1 shakey head
1 crankbait
1 chatterbait/spinnerbait
1 frog
1 wacky rig
and 3 for flipping usually only use 5 of them
4 rods. Three baitcaster's, one spinning rod. I tie on spinner, frog, jig, lipless crank. On the spinner, I usually have a t rig, or a drop shot.
1 for spinnerbait
2 for jigs/plastics
1 for jerkbait
1 for tube/shakey head
8 rods on deck and 5 or 6 in locker. On deck depends what pattern's. But at least 4 with jigs!
The more dialed in you are the fewer amount of tackle that is needed,
My rod boat locker contains;
Baitcasting:
3 Swimbait rods, 1 H and XH
4 jig and worm rods.
2 crankbait rods.
1 structure spoon and smaller crankbait rod.
2 all around rounds used for spinner baits and lighter weight jigs.
Spinning:
2 medium light finesse rod used for drop and slip shot.
1 medium finesse rod used for dart head jigs.
15 rid & reel combo's.
I don't keep anything pre rigged, rig as needed.
Generally settled down using 1 or 2 outfits any given day or night and that is all I keep on the deck.
When I fish out of someone else's boat I take 4 outfits and 1 tackle bag.

If I've fished a lake and have a good idea of what I'm going to need, then I have fewer rods. If I'm traveling to a new lake I've never fished and have no idea what I'll be fishing then that's another story. So my rod lockers might have 5-8 rods in it on a dialed in bite with 4-5 on deck or I may have 20+ rods in the locker and 10 on deck trying to figure out a new body of water.
This year I will have 7 total I only had 3 at the end of last year it was
1 crank
1 flipping
1 finesse
This year the 7 are
1 jerkbait/top water
1 flipping
1 casting jig
1 deep crank
1 lipless/other crank
1 big bait
1 finesse
The most I use is 5. Typically at any one time for me there are really only like 2-3 effective lures/presentations so I have more than I need. It would be nice to have more just to have stuff tied on to check things out and I do plan on getting another setup.
Baitcasting:
1 for texas/carolina
2 for jig/reaction baits
1 for big swimbaits
Spinning:
1 for finesse stuff like dropshot, shakyhead, slim senko, underspin etc.
I use two at a time. I own 4 total.
1 Hvy
1 Mhvy
1 Med
1 Light
I carry most of my rods with me in my locker, usually have about 10 on the deck.
Casting rods
3 swimbait rods from H to XH
3 cranking rods for squarebills to deep divers
jerkbait rod
popper rod
spinnerbait
bladed jig
frog
C-rig
toad/holly belly
punching rod
finesse jig
jig
T-rig
football jig
traps
spinning rods
shakyhead/tubes
light cranks/jerks
Ned rig
dropshot
wacky rig/senko
Keitech/grub
I do between 8 and 10 up front and usually 4 in the back.
If I had a bass boat and it could hold 20, then 20 is what I would carry. Since I don't, I rotate rod/reel combos so that most will see some kind of use during the year. One may or may not be a Medium spinning rod. I always try to carry a ML, a couple Mediums and a couple MHs with Fast, Extra Fast and Medium-Fast actions. I normally have each set up with different lures so all I need to do is grab a different rod. My time on the water is usually pretty limited and I would rather be casting than tying.
Most of the time I fish from shore and when by myself will carry 8-10 rods in the car.

HAHAHA..... 20, that's conservative for you i'd imagine. you sure that wasn't a typo and you mean 200?
When I used my boat I'd take all my setups just to soon realize I only ever ended up with about 5 on the deck. I've used my boat once in 2yrs now since buying a kayak. I take the 4 or 5 setups that always stayed on the deck of the boat. Seems to be working out alright for me so far.
I carry 46-50 rods in my boat at all times. I may take one or two out and replace them with one or two other rods, but most all of my rods and reels stay in the boat. Last thing I want is to be out on the lake wishing I had a rod I left at home. I can't tell you how many times I've went out expecting to have a good bite in "this" bait, only to find out they were biting "that" bait. Luckily, since I have all my stuff in the boat, I just dig out the rod I need and catch fish.

That's from a guy who has won a major tournament this year!
Cocked, locked, & ready to rock!

Now that is a boat I could use!

Basscat Puma FTD...I love it!
I usually have about 9 or 10 on deck if I am not on to a specific pattern or bite. Once I get it down or find a pattern I will use about 5 or 6. Now on new water where I am in the dark I will keep 10 on deck until I get comfortable with the lake
I carry almost all mine in the locker. So I've got 10-12 in the locker and there are times I'll have 7-8 on deck if I've got some junk fishing to do, and there's other times I'll get down to 2 if I'm really on something.
With my tiny 16 foot Tracker I can only do 4 rods in boat without stepping on them.
No Rod locker.
I like to rotate my stuff each trip: all round reels one time , all Daiwa, just to have fun. I'm limited to one waterway so I'm pretty sure how to fish them.
I usually have them all rigged but I may start leaving them with baits off. Won't tangle as much. Once I brushed my leg up against a rigged Vision 110 and had a rough time removing hooks!
I generally have about 10-14 rods in the boat with me.
2-3 different crankbait rods
2-3 different plastics rods
Swimbait rod
Buzzbait/spinnerbait
Dropshot
Frog
Topwater
Jig
Last time I checked I had 22 rods on board...I can't remember adding any or taking any out since then, so that's probably it for now
I typically have 5 - 6 on deck at any given time. More than that and I feel like they're in my way.
I bring 10 setups in the rod locker, but usually carry 7-9 on the deck. Sometimes, when a pattern is really dialed in, I may carry only 2-3 topside.
Usually, I prefer to have almost all of them out. A rod doesn't do you any good in the boat locker.
What has been ending up on deck but sometimes 1 or 2 spinning rods are up top as well.
1 Crankbait rod
1 Plastics rod
1 Spinnerbait rod
1 flip/pitch rod
6 on the deck at all times, the rest in the box 14, when one comes out one goes in. can't stand a cluttered deck. plus have tripped over them before when they were all on board……….hate going in the drink………more than once.
Night fishing tends to teach you quickly to keep only what you need out on the deck. I see pro's with a dozen rods out on the deck all the time, you can't with more than a few rods at one time, put them away it's a simple discipline to learn. Stepping on rods damages them and kicking overboard isn't any fun.
Tom
I usually bring 4 rigs. If I am fishing somewhere new, or if I know the conditions out on the water will be rough, I will bring 6 rigs.
I have about ten baitcasting rigs and four spinning rigs in my rod locker and usually keep four of the bait casters and two of the spinning rigs on deck, due to limited deck space (Tracker Pro170).
Tight lines,
Bob
