Ok, I'm Done With The Rod&reel Monkey 2025

fishing user avatar.ghoti. reply :

For the last three years I've been buying, selling, swapping, building, tuning, upgrading, repairing, evaluating, and re-aligning my rod and reel combos. I've gotten it down to 15 casting and 5 spinning setups. I tried to get it pared down further, but just couldn't do it.

Now, I'm done. I am not buying any more rods and reels. For my kind of fishing, I have all the bases covered.

Now to work on that 500 pounds of tackle I've accumulated. I want to trim that down as well, but I may be doomed to fail.

Each and every time I say I'm not buying any more tackle - a cabelas or bass pro shops catalog shows up in the mail.....I have recently overhauled my fishing rods/reels as well - got rid of a lot of things I wasn't using, and upgraded equipment for the types of fishing I do the most of/want to focus on.

fishing user avatarDelaware Valley Tackle reply :

Maybe we need to start a 12 step program for tackle junkies.

fishing user avatarRaul reply :

Hey, I quitted smokin´ now I have more money to spend in my two hobbies, fishing ( and buying tackle ) and video games.

fishing user avatarWIGuide reply :

Every  I say that I end up finding something on sale that I just can't live without. Best of luck to you though!

fishing user avatarGoose52 reply :

Someday - I'd like to follow in your footsteps.  I've just about hit the saturation point in the amount of gear...now I'd like to thin the heard. BUT, as was just said, those pesky sales and eBay deals keep getting me in trouble.   Sales and bargains are two of the reasons why I not only have, for instance, a dedicated chatterbait combo...............but I've got a back-up chatterbait combo.....................

Now, how about those Daiwa T3 Ballistics that are still on sale at TW...............hmmmmmm

fishing user avatarSiebert Outdoors reply :

Last time I tried this Gary I ended up with a Lews tourney speed spool and a Legend Extreme rod.

i still wanna know how the "2 small bags" for the Roadtrip are coming along...  :)

2 years ago i swore i wasn't gonna buy another crankbait.....that was about 75 (or so) crankbaits ago..

fishing user avatarGaerith reply :

Fishing tackle are like Pringles, once you pop you can't stop. :)

fishing user avatarnowicki2005 reply :

I like free tackle....Go Illini? Go Bulls? Go Blackhawks? Go Pacers? Go Colts? Go cubs? Lol

fishing user avatarbass1980 reply :

I'm afraid I am going on the same path as you Ghoti. Last year I bought 6 new reels, used them less than 3 months, some only a few outings. I've sold them all since I want better reels, not that mine last year was bad either. Since winter I have bought 2 Daiwa T3 1016, Daiwa Steez, and 2 Chronarch Ci4+. What's worse now is I got a chance to play with a buddies Megabass reel and I already see a Zonda 68 hedgehog and T3 FX in my near future. JDM finesse will be the end of my marriage.

fishing user avatarbait__Monkey reply :

HAHA....youse guys have no chance!

fishing user avatarjtesch reply :

Just think about how much fun it is working on and tuning those reels. How can you possibly give that up.

I just may fail miserably on this one. I'm only fishing three days; Thursday, Friday and Saturday. SO, how much stuff do I actually need to fish three days? I've made a list of "must have" baits and rigging, and after several revisions, it still won't come close to fitting in those two small bags. Like I said; failure is looming on the immediate horizon.

I've tried for several years to trim down the amount of tackle I carry around. And every year the collection expands. I'm a bit encouraged by my relative success with the rods and reels. I went from 30 to 20. I'm calling that a success, so maybe I can do it with the tackle.

I have stopped buying crankbaits. Haven't bought one for a couple of years. I do not know how many I have; and don't want to know. I have a ridiculous number that have never been wet. That's the thought that prevents additional purchases. I tell myself I need to break off a hundred or so before I buy any more.

Plastics are my downfall. Every time Big-O comes out with a new bait, I seem unable to resist buying a hundred bucks worth. I have to have several packs of several colors; don't I?

You are right about that. I'm afraid tuning reels will be the last addiction I give up.

fishing user avatarMaxximus Redneckus reply :

I got all i need just collect abus now..fishing and doin is morr important then having the next big thing.BUT that dont mean if i see the best deal of all time at a yard i aint buyin 20 and under its all mine

fishing user avatarTeal reply :

I said that too Ghoti, and I rationalized to my self why I should up grade on my upgraded rods.. .. -_-

Good luck my friend.

Just stay away from the swimbaits. Addictive and expensive.

How much stuff you need for 3 days ? The same you need for an afternoon, " BETTER HAVE AND NOT NEED, THAN NEED AND NOT HAVE "
fishing user avatarBrian Needham reply :

I wish you luck sir!

Ghoti: Read my post on the tackle thread " How to defeat the bait monkey" I'm with you. Let's get this evil little son of a gun ( wow, that was hard to say with out cussin) out of our lives and just go fishing. Now, repeat after me, "I am a bass fisherman and I have a problem"

fishing user avatarHogsticker reply :

Um yeah, but Icast is just around the corner. The only way to stop is if they quit making more. Not gonna happen

fishing user avatarTywithay reply :

I ordered the final rod to complete my arsenal tonight as well. Now I am officially done buying things that I need. From here forward....I'll just be buying things that I want...

Sign me up!  I bought 2 used T3 1016 type reels and the next to last high speed LH T3 1016 TW was closing out....and considered one of the slower ratio reels.  Yeah.  Like I need more reels.  :wall3:

I feel like I am on a :mouse-28493:

Have at least another 4 more rods I simply have to have.  :dogdog:

fishing user avatarBilbotc2 reply :

yeah once the bug bites....it's tough....cause you have to have the entire spectrum of colours of each plastics. And somebody's recommendation of the three rod multicaster with dual back-up reels has to be tried out for ourselves. ghoti? from the batman episode?

fishing user avatarJeff H reply :

I won't be buying anymore new reels but I'm highly susceptible to good used models of those I like most.  I'm good on rods for now, even have some spares stashed away.  Tackle is a never ending pursuit though and one I've no desire to quash.
