New Reel Help? 2025

fishing user avatarzwhiten12 reply :

Hey y'all, I have saved up some money for a new reel, like most teens, I'm broke. I have been looking at 2 reels and they are very different. I have been looking at the revo s and the Abu Garcia 5500c3. My buddy has the c3 and I loved the feel of it and also loved the feel of the S. It takes me a while to save up so I can only afford one right now.

I want a work horse of a reel that I can afford to use it for a little surf fishing for the 1 or 2 weeks that I'm at the beach in a year. A concern with the 5500c3 is difficulty in flipping and pitching and a concern with S is that it will not last as long as the 5500c3 from the salt. I take good care of te reels that I have with proper maintenance. I'm really torn and could use some help. Thanks y'all!

Decide what you'll be using it the most for. That will help you decide. Do you fish salt water extensively?  Is line recovery,IPT an important factor? What about weight? Senkos or hard baits?  Also, look into purchasing used equipment. Your dollar will go further and you may be able to afford a good used combo for what you have to spend.  Some shops will have last year's models well into the following season.  I picked up my Sol from a guy that had two of them on his shelf for longer than he cared and got a great deal on it.

I fish mostly freshwater and fish all different types of baits but mostly hard.

fishing user avatarlivetofish28 reply :

forgot to add I would go revo s over the  5500c3 its lighter and you can throw lighter baits with it

Very. Look down a few threads and there is a 5 year Pro Qualifer challenge. Very durable.

fishing user avatarLgMouthGambler reply :

PQ is a very durable reel. You cant go wrong with either, you will have to see how each feels in your hand. The PQ is gonna be a dual brake reel, and the Revo S is Cent. brake only. I personally would go for the Revo S (yes RC I said that) over the PQ.

I have one and love it, but I've never fished saltwater. This link should help:

Duh, I just didnt want to be the one to say it this time. LOL

fishing user avatarrockchalk06 reply :

I have both. I prefer the S. She is a sweet sexy little hunny of a reel. That said, I love my PQ. It will be easier for a beginner to learn on.

Stop by a BP and check them all out.

I definitely will! Thanks!

Wait for Bass Pro Shops Spring Classic sale.  PQ's go on sale for $80 on a regular basis but,  especially during the Classic.  The new BPS Extreme is supposed to be pretty nice as well. I have two PQ's and really like them.

Find and read the 5 year challenge,  you'll be sold.

Not to highjack the thread, but glad you found a new Sol at a great price.  I picked up a 2nd one 2 weeks ago.  Plan on posting a picture of it eventually.  Previous owner upgraded internal and external, and I installed a Presso spool in it.

What rod do you have on your s?

My S is on a medium fast Veritas micro guide 7' rod. It's mainly my jerk bait set up.

My PQ is on a 7'6" MH Winch Veritas. My dedicated cranking set up.

I wish. Got over $2000 in rods and reels from them, would be nice to get a kickback.

fishing user avatarBig Bassman reply :

IMHO if you plan on using your reel for salt water I would go with the 5500C as it is a beefier reel. However, it is bigger than a palm reel (PQ) and may not be comfortable for you? They are basically two different reels so as someone suggested in a previous post, probably should go with the reel that you like the best for what you will fish the most. Unless of course you can afford to buy both?
