QUALITY RODS AND REELS YOU CAN GET FOR UNDER 100 BUCKS 2025

Hey Fellas: I buy and get donations of a lot of stuff for my give away program in the spring. I use this stuff to make sure the combos are balanced and because I am a Low Budget Mook myslef, cheap is more like it I would like to share some of my experience with people looking for such gear;
Reels;
BAITCASTING
Pflueger Trion right in at 99.99, the narrow spool low profile is my favorite. I have also bought thes , pretty regularly for around 45 used/in good mechanical condition on our flea market.Aluminum frame and they are smmoth! Drag is good and easy to set the centrifical brakes. BPS and Pflueger service them and parts are readily avaiable. Stay away from the Eschelon: way too many issues!
BPS EXTREME; all models are great, easy to adjust,aluminum frames. They are 80 bucks retail and frequently BPS puts them up for 60.They are easy to clean and lube yourself, and BPS services them and I have found them on the flea market in good mechanical condition for as little as 27 bucks, normally around 40.
BPS Fritts Cranking Reels; They have about the same review as the Extremes, JUST STICK WITH THE NEWER BLACK MODELS, The Gold ones are graphite framed.
Cabelas Prodigy,Tourny ZX and Tourny ZXFS, these can all be had for under 100 on their site, they frequently discount them and can be had for 45 on the flea market. My problem with these reels are they really can't be serviced and parts are hard to come by. If you are capable to clean and lube them yourself, then a good buy. Cabelas for their part are very free to replace a reel you are having problems with.
Okuma Alumina: Cureently on sale for 60bucks at Cabelas, the brakes are a pain to deal with.Reliable
DiawaRojo also on sale ( clearance) at Cabelas, and can be had for 40 on the flea markket if you keep an eye out and are patient.
ABU's The 5000's and the c 4's can be found frequently on the flea market for around 45 to 50 bucks.RellMech will clean em up and sevice parts at very reasonable prices. I got one with a broken pawl for 5 bucks, 30 bucks later Dave had it purring!
SPINNING REELS
Pflueger Trion and President" At 40 and 60 bucks new and many on flea market for less THESE ARE MY SINGLE FAVORITES for personal use and the giveaways and even thoguh they are graphite freames I have neve had an issue with either reel
Cabelas Prestige Great house reel for 50 bucks!
THE BPS EXTREME SPINNING REEL"The biggest piece of crap , many isssues STAY AWAY FROM THIS REEL. Line Twist,Line uner the rotor, and the drag sucks.
ABU Cardnial Series: Very reliable and I got a lot of them this year from the fellas here, the guys we gave them to loved them
MITCHELL AVOCET the gold ones; despite a lot of plastic outer parts for a weekend angler this reel is actually a good buy. Not reccomeded for every day ,hard use.
RODS; BAITCASTING AND SPINNING
Cabelas Fish Eagle II WOW greeat rods for 80 bucks. They do not have a lot of guides but I use them heavy and the guides are placed correctly on the rods, light and sensitive.
FENWICKS; THE EAGLE GT'S AND THE HMX'S
60 AND 85 RESPECTIVELY ; My other favorites for personal use. The HMX's can be found on Amazon DEEPLY DISCOUNTED at various times These rods are very reliable, have good constuction I neber have had to return a single rod. I wish they still made the Ventura line they were inexpensive and reliable.
Cabelas Pro Guides; 40 bucks, great now the they have added a 6'6" Med and Med Hvy /FAST to the line up really good rods for the price
SHIMANO Clarus and Convergance GReat value and great rods at the 45 to 80 range depending on sales and freqent availability on the flea market
BPS EXTREMES; alsoeadiloy found for 45 to 50 on the flea market. While not heavy these are not light rods, BPS is very liberal with replacing rods that get broken
NOTE HERE: GREAT VALUE WHEN THE BPS EXTREME ROD AND REEL COMBOS GO FOR 99.99!!!!! Caution: check the rod #'s on the combos, BPS has used cheaper rods in the past while showing pics of the better rods!
ST.CROIX TRIUMPHS: I found it to be cheaper and have better guide inserts than the Premiers.
ALLSTAR INSTINCTSAgain not a light weight rod but an excellent 60 buck rod

I like clarus rods baitcasting and spinning.
bought three of them, they have good tapers and have a nice feel for the price, when on sale for 41 bucks it is even better.

I just downloaded the Shimano catalog. I too thought the compre was < $99 with an MSRP of $89, but the price on them has gone up. :'( Some of the Compre models now exceed $99 at MSRP. It appears that the Crucial's price also got bumped up.

Glad to see you put the Triumph on your list. That rod seems to get a lot crap but I really like mine. It is a very good rod for the money.
The Daiwa Exceller is a great spinning reel for under $100. When I bought mine at Cabela's recently I looked at every reel in its price range and I think it is the best, and I'm a Shimano guy.

That's because many of the Triumphs were defective, at least initially.

Actually they were bad mouthed and bashed because the ST Croix fanatics thought this rod was beneath them. The Triumphs have had very few of the guide insert problems, than thier American Premier cousin s Built on the same blanks in China. If this is beneath you SSt Croix guys sell all your St Croix Products on the Flea MArket I am sure there will be people to appreciate it. ;D

The best under $100 rod that I have personally used, is the Shimano Clarus. I only own 1 right now, but I plan to fill out the rest of my arsenal with Clarus rods, they are built that well! Over the counter lifetime warranty on them, too.

Add symtre it is tough I know because my brother has had one from since I can remember read drag and im still fishing it today. Daiwa capricorn and daiwa ss700 the ss700 favourite reel of all time caught more fish on it that anything built touch first spinning reel ever for me for what? 5-6 years. If you can find fenwick hmg on sale i rave about these light balanced beautiful rod with the red carbon weave in fact have it in my hands right now. Primere sp? nice rod, but the reel seat slipped more than once while fishing. All based of my experience not much, but hey I'm credible ;D

Via E-bay Gander Mountain USED Pflueger Medalist knock offs for $25 or less
Pflueger Medalist $79 or way less new
Shimano Symetre $79 or less
Newer Cardinal series ( no experience with these but they look sweet )
PS based on past personal experience I'd avoid the Mitchel's completely. In their price range you can do much much better

I HEy FFI > The President is on sale, I think Pflueger is going to respond to the Revo profiles by discontinuing the Pres and Maybe the Trions, or they are going to redesign them. As for the Purist: I was very disapointed in this reel, wheter pflueger made or nOT THE TRUTH IS the truth. As far as the Citica; Less thAN 100 BUCKS IS THE CRITERIA, You want to start a thread for over 100, then do so

I first jumped from Mitchell to Pflueger years ago when the &(#$(#@ up my favotire reel the 300, and havent looked back I had recieved 3 Avocets from the fellas for my giveways, and I was surprised that tehy really would serve the casual weekend fisherman well.
As faR AS 60 TO 80 BUCK JUNK, i would think uyou are refering to the the BPS Extremes, ever use them , I have. I have also fished with a few guys from these forums that use them exclusively, one a tournament fisherman. HAVE YOU USED THESE REELS? Have you used the Prodgys or the FX's from Cabelas. If you have pray tell of your experience and why you consider them junk. I have used and tested everything on my list.

I hope they don't discontinue the President BC that was the reel I wanted but they put the Suppreme on sale for the Pres list price so I bought one.
As far as the Mitchell's I hear the older ones were great but I bought a nerwer black 308 a few years back and after 4 returns I finaly got a decent one ( a no receipt long story deal). The new ones look decent but for the price range I'd go with a President anyday.
As far as the $60-$80 reels quit putting words in people's mouth's. I just posted genericaly to cover say Rhino's or something. Actualy I agree with you 100% on the Extreme's. I handled one while in Chicago last week and I thought they were smooth as silk. For the price I thought they were awesome! I love the look they are a sharp looking reel as well!
I knew the Citica violated the $100. For $20 more brand new or less than $100 used or even on the Flea market for < $100 I think it needs to be considered.
In short with 2 kids in college, 2 young ones and the very sick older one I'm in the same budget as you for a long time to come.

I am lucky to have some really nice stuff, but one certainly does not need to spend $100 on rod or reel to effectively fish bass. I do, in fact, have and fish with some of the products mentioned here. My favorites...
Cabelas Prodigy baitcaster and spinning reels. Absolutely great stuff, watch for these on clearance in the fall/winter for some of the best deals.
Cabela's Tourney ZX spinning reel. This one took me by surprise, nice reel! Mine went for a swim early season yet continues to perform great.
Shimano Convergence rods. WAY under $100 and great performance.
I honestly can find a bunch of spinning reels under $100 I can live with (none of mine cost me over $70), but with baitcasters I do prefer to spend more (with the exception of Prodigy which I feel is incredible).

The Citica D regularly retails as low as $89. At that price it has to be at or very close to the top of the under-$100 list.

Iz my friend I did miss that. I put lol to be on the safe side because I knew you well enough to know you were funnin in some way or other.
I did miss a golden opportunity though. There are 2 BPS's in Chicago. One of them is right by a Cabela's. I've never been in a Cabela's. I should have made time to go. Oh well, going back to same place in about a month. I'll go then after saving up a little cash.
