Other Uses For A Crankbait Rod 2025

fishing user avatarFelix77 reply :

Just curious about those members who have a crankbait rod (parabolic bend, Medium-ish Flex) and if they use it for other things.   What are those other things?

Thanks in advance.

fishing user avatarnew2BC4bass reply :

Mark Perry's answer to me when I asked this about my new Tatula 7'2" MHR was this: "bladed jigs, buzz frogs, spinnerbaits, small swimbaits etc."

fishing user avatarRusty Shackleford reply :

i use my 765CB Glass as a spinnerbait rod, as well

fishing user avatarTrey Harpel reply :

spinnerbaits, cranks, topwater, chatterbaits, wakebaits

possibly jerkbaits depending on the rod..

fishing user avatarDelaware Valley Tackle reply :

Other kinds of treble hook baits, maybe some chunk bait like catfishing. I don't like med or slow action rods at all for spinner baits. I get better hook-sets on the heavy single hooks with a faster rod. I don't subscribe to the theory of needing a slow action of stretchy line to avoid pulling the bait away from a fish. If you're getting short strikes it's because the fish are not fully committed to the take, not because of your gun-fighter reflexes. lol

Your choices are only limited by preference.

Try it out for yourself. You just may find something you like; or not. Either way, you learned something.

fishing user avatarhatrix reply :

They work great in open water for basically any moving bait. I use them for hollow body swim baits as it really lets them inhale it. I also like them for moving top waters like buzz frogs or even a buzz bait sometimes. Personally I think I use to miss some fish because they hit so hard sometimes and there is not enough give to let them hang onto it before you get that jarring hit and they also feel that and by then it's far to late. Plus you can really launch baits way out there with them so that is also a plus at times.

fishing user avatarBasshunterJGH reply :

Depends on the rod. Some are more versatile than others. A 7'-7'3" mh mod-fast can be used for a lot more applications than an 8' moderate deep cranking. Spinnerbaits, jerkbaits, topwaters, chatterbaits, and about anything else with treble hooks within the lure weight rating of the rod.

fishing user avatarColdSVT reply :

I use one for jerkbaits all the time...an old blue loomis gl2 7'mh mod

fishing user avatarAlonerankin2 reply :

Used a old loomis CBR rated to one once. I would toss open hook tube rigs a lot with it.. Worked just fine.

fishing user avatariceintheveins reply :

Great for spinnerbaits and all topwaters except frogs.

fishing user avatargulfcaptain reply :

I use a Crankin rod for my castable umbrella rigs.  Like the softness and give to keep from having hooks pull.  Also one for blades and spinnerbaits, sometimes topwaters as well.

fishing user avatarOkobojiEagle reply :

I can't think why I wouldn't have a crankbait tied to it all of the time.

I use my crankbait rod for large jerkbaits , top water , spinnerbaits .

fishing user avatarMissourifishin reply :

I use mine for just about anything with treble hooks. I've never tried it with spinnerbaits, but the idea isn't too appealing to me.

fishing user avatarrangerjockey reply :

I use my wiggle wart rod which is a KisselKrafts 843cb for pointer 78's and the zara puppy.

fishing user avatarww2farmer reply :

I have used my deep cranking rod (7'6" MH Abu Veritas Winch) while doing a drift and drag with exposed hook tubes, and football jigs for smallmouth. Worked fine.

I can see why you would be hesitant , I am using a medium heavy 705cb so it can handle more weight a straight medium would not be the best suggestion .

As a co-angler I like to keep variety into the setup I bring.  I tend to begin with a crankbait but have also tried smaller swimbaits.  Was looking to uncover what other things I might be able to use it for.

fishing user avatarOkobojiEagle reply :

WWIIfarmer gave a suggestion I would agree with, the rest of the suggestions I wouldn't choose a +7' long rod with a soft parabolic action.  The crankbait category is so large and varied I would be choosing between crankbaits not whether a crankbait or some other type of bait.

fishing user avatarSonik reply :

I went on short notice with a friend and borrowed a 7' MH Moderate-Fast Cabela's Tourney Trail and had a blast with it on a swimbait bite. Was pretty versitile. I could feel it working well for spinnerbaits, topwaters, big cranks, lipless cranks, and if I stuck braid on it, I may even be ok to try worming. He said $35 for it new too. I should have offered him $40 and took it home.

fishing user avatarMaster Bait'r reply :

Cranks

Spinnerbaits

Jerkbaits

Certain topwaters

Smaller wakebaits

Small chatters and buzzbaits

Small swimbaits

fishing user avatarHogsticker reply :

It all depends on the rod.

fishing user avatarnew2BC4bass reply :

Deep diving crankbaits is something I almost never use in my area so my new Tatula 7'2" MHR is going to be tried with a bunch of different lures...................next year.  :teeth:
