I had a friend that had a broken compre rod it broke about the third eye from the tip. We have no idea how it broke. He took it back to BPS where he got it from and it was replaced free no questions no receipt. The lifetime over the counter warranty sure paid off.He got the rod last year for $85 during the rod trade in.

Some will argue that it is dependent on the BPS you go to whether or not the Shimano warranty will be honored. It was explained to me at both the Richmond and Hampton, VA BPS stores that Shimano warranties will be no-questions-asked replacements. Fortunately for me I've not had to test the warranty yet.
And frankly, I don't want to now. I have the previous-gen Compres with the awesome cork handles and notched out place for your finger above the reel. So I hope they last forever... or maybe BPS will let me replace + upgrade to a Crucial. But that, I haven't asked.
I had a Crucial spinner bait rod that broke while I was hung up and trying to get unhung last year. Well I took it to the OKC BPS and was given a hard time by the CS clerk. Of course I didn't have my receipt because if I kept every receipt from everything I ever bought, I would have to rent a storage room. So she calls the "fishing manager" who I am certain probably sold shoes a month earlier. He also gave me some grief and told me that the only way he would replace it was if the had the same model on the shelf. Luckily for me they did. However, I explained to him that he was going to get his replacement or money from Shimano and it was a lifetime warranty. I also informed him that I would no longer be buying anything from the OKC BPS.
I think that was as much a BPS warranty as a shimano. I had a similar issue with two veritas rods and walked in and they said go get a new one off the rack.
As far as upgrading goes, they offered me to get a credit of what i paid on the rod in store credit so i could get whatever i wanted so i don't see why they wouldn't do it on a shimano too.

You think incorrectly. The agreement is that Shimano warranty will be honored over the counter, it's supposed to be that way with all Shimano dealers, it's an OVER THE COUNTER warranty. The warranty is the sole responsibility of Shimano, not Bass Pro Shops. Unfortunately, there are some poorly educated folks in the stores that don't realized, or understand, the corporate policy.

Here is the shimano warranty from their website....
THIS LIMITED LIFETIME WARRANTY DOES NOT EXTEND TO OR COVER ANY DAMAGE TO THE ROD NOT RESULTING FROM A NON-CONFORMITY IN MATERIAL OR WORKMANSHIP; ANY DAMAGE CAUSED BY MISUSE, ABUSE OR TAMPERING WITH THE ROD BY OTHER THAN NORMAL USE OF THE ROD; OR ANY NON-CONFORMITY OR DAMAGE RESULTING FROM REPAIRS PERFORMED OTHER THAN BY SHIMANO OR AN AUTHORIZED SHIMANO SERVICE PROVIDER.
Shimano will warranty the following rods. However, if they come to us appearing to be broken in a car door, look like they have been used excessively, or we were informed by the customer that it was broken in an accident, then Shimano will NOT warranty them.
Looks to me they did you a favor because trying to get a bait unhung is a classic way to abuse/break a rod.

Care to show me where it says that on their warranty?

"Shimano Rod - Limited Lifetime Warranty
As used herein, “Shimano” will mean “Shimano American Corporation” with respect to United States warranty claims and “Shimano Canada Ltd. / LTÉE” with respect to Canadian warranty claims. Shimano and Shimano Canada Ltd. / LTÉE warrant to the original retail purchaser that this rod will be free from non-conformities in materials and workmanship. Shimano's sole obligation under this Limited Lifetime Warranty is to repair or replace, at Shimano's option, a non-conforming rod at no cost to the original retail purchaser other than the cost of packing, insuring, and shipping the rod to Shimano. This Limited Lifetime Warranty will be considered VOID if the rod is found to have been subjected to repairs not authorized by Shimano, or if it has been modified, neglected, improperly maintained, misused, abused, or the appearance of the product reveals damage by your failure to provide proper maintenance."
I don't see anything about over the counter warranty mentioned....

They had no idea how it broke. I'm sure there is no one in the world that could tell how it broke. In fact, I was hung up and holding the rod in my left hand while trying to get it unhung with my right hand. I could see the spinner bait. I let out plenty of line, but I assume it wrapped around the end and snapped. I have been hung up hundreds of times and that is the only time I have ever had a rod break.

gotcha...that is a strange scenario for sure.
It says it under the warranty section when you look at a rod.
interesting they have it there but not in their fine print.....I stand corrected. All the talk about the shimano over the counter warranty has made me want to get one as my next rod to try them out It also doesn't hurt that the local shop down the street from me is a dealer too.
My local retailer says if I ever bust one, just come in and get another, or if they don't have it in the rack they will get it for me. No hassle guaranteed replacement is nice, especially "on the spot". I'd guess half of my rods, or more, are Shimano Crucials so I do like that.
"I can get a good look at a T-bone steak by sticking my head up a bulls ass but I'd rather take the butchers word for it." That's a line in regards to warranties from one of the funniest movies of all time.
I'm not buying rods based on warranties. I buy them because I feel they can serve a purpose and they have a power/taper I find desirable for a tecnique I like to fish.
If a rod is defective it's going to break pretty early in its useful life. Maybe I'm rougher then some on my rods; banging them off the Celling, laying them on rocks, dropping them etc. I don't know.
I don't think there is a definitive time period you can go by to judge a rods useful life but if I know I have put it through its paces actually catching fish and it breaks. Then I did something to cause that break.
On that note I've only broke 1 rod by testing it's durability after a few cold ones. The shimano warranty and many others are nice but they are not a deciding factor in my purchases.
Current brands in rod rack(abu garcia, shimano, daiwa, gloomis, powell and st.croix)
I seem to recall having to also pay $20 for shipping the old rod back on those over the counter replacement warranties. Not trying to take a stab at it or anything, just thought it ought to be mentioned since it seems some folks don't know all that much about the warranty from reading the posts. I, myself, own two Shimano Compre rods from the previous series, with full cork grips, and I bought them based on how well I believed they would fish (and they fish excellently), but the warranty was an attraction also since that was the first time I ever paid $100 for a rod. I didn't want to snap it and be out the money. Now, like another said, I never want to find out about the warranty, or the $20 to be paid, because I consider these to be irreplaceable due to their handles. I absolutely hate what Shimano has done to their rods using split grips and no foregrips. The EVA, I don't mind.

Wouldn't own a rod without a foregrip, not wild about the spilt grip either unless it's an 8' rod with a long butt.
I saw where Loomis is now doing a 100 buck replacement no questions asked. I like that much more for a high dollar rod like that. No arguing whether it was defect or not.
The other problem is it seems the line betewen warranty and replacement has become uncotrollably blurred. Very rarely are rods broken under warranty conditions. I think that is why St Croix moved to their gold & silver plans instead. You are basically paying for a replacement rod not getting a warranty.
These replacement scenarios are "Free to me" not free. Everyone who buys one of their rods is paying for the ones that use, and few that abuse the program. Replacing items "no questions asked" is a customer retention tool. By keeping their brand in the consumers hand they keep a competitor from possibly getting a foot in the door. A rod with a true defect will fail the first few times a good bend is put in it.

It's stated at various places, including in Bass Pro Shops warranty information from the corporate standpoint, as well as from several other stores, and in the Shimano dealer agreement. Just like the dealer agreement with EVERY Pure Fishing full line dealer states that within one Year of P.O.P they are to handle the exchange in store, beyond that all rods would go back to Pure- there are a couple of exclusions here, though.

THat's why St Croix has an actual Warranty- if the rod is broken under normal circumstances, they'll fix or replace it. BUT- the caveat is you have to send the rod to them. Like DVT stated the replacement is more of a retention tool than anything.

Actually you are mistaken on the St Croix warranty. Their warranty covers only faulty workmanship....
2. If your rod was damaged due to faulty workmanship, then of course we will cover the cost of the repair or replacement during the warranty period.
3. However, if evidence indicates that the damage is due to an accident, normal wear or neglect, then we’ll advise you of the additional cost to repair or replace your rod.
basically 20 dollars to cove shipping back and whatever it costs to ship to them, 15 if you use their fed ex shipping option....their gold star plan covers any type of break regardless of fault and is 50 or 75 depending on the rod line plus shipping back to st croix.

Same here. My local outfitter sent back a faulty Shimano and I was charged $20 as well, though in my case they sent the rod back for repair (faulty reel seat) and Shimano sent back a brand new rod.

I'm mistaken of nothing. During normal use is an indicator of materials and workmanship.
After nearly thirty years of involvement in the industry and with a couple of the companies you've mentioned, as well as experience at the corporate and retail level with others I speak from experience. I'll leave it at that you're not really understanding what it is that you're professing. You're reading the warranty alone, have no background of information or of the processes involved therein.
Is "normal use" catching a 2lb bass and having your drag set correctly and the rod breaking considered normal? Or is catching a 5lb bass from the bank and trying to drag him through the slop and your rod breaking considered normal? To me, they are both fishing conditions, yet quite different in comparison.
I guess I misunderstood it saying normal wear and tear as meaning normal wear and tear not something made up and read into more than what it says. I guess I take warranties at what is written not implied as my background is in dealing with legal type language. On 2/25/2014 at 11:31 AM, Hooligan said:I'm mistaken of nothing. Will they probably replace it no matter what, yeah but that is taking advantage of a company and more importantly not being honest. If a rod has a manufacturing defect it will fail early on not 6 months down the road. As someone with your self proclaimed mastery and knowledge of all things fishing related apparently I would think that you would know many factors contribute to a rod breaking or failing and the majority are not manufacturing related, but like I said you probably already knew that.
When a rod fails, usually, yes it will be in the first few times. However, it isn't just about the blanks. Reel seats, for instance, can break a year into owning a rod for no known reason. There are instances, as well, that a rod will redistribute the resin within the blank causing a weak point- that falls out of wear and tear. Guides- if a ring pops or a tip top breaks away from the frame. Not all warranty issues deal with blank failure- that's also part of what you look at.
Regardless, it is far more than what the warranty states, going back to the initial post. The companies in question have the expectation that their retailers are going to deal wih these returns. It isn't the retailer making the implication or doing a service. It's the expectation of the dealer agreement.
If you are applying undue pressure to the rod, it isn't normal. Dragging a five pound fish through slop isn't going to be the issue- taking that rod blank beyond 90 degrees is what is going to do it.On 2/25/2014 at 11:51 AM, jbsoonerfan said:Is "normal use" catching a 2lb bass and having your drag set correctly and the rod breaking considered normal? And, if you think they can't tell from the blank what occurred, you'd be wrong.
