Help with a rod 2025

Hello
I have a question about a rod, my wife picked me up a Fenwick HMG 7'6" light-moderate/fast spinning rod. I don't want to return it because it's the first time she has bought me anything fishing related and she was pretty proud of herself for picking this one out. I read on one the threads that a moderate/fast would be to whippy for bass, then I read it's good for crankbaits/jerkbaits, then I read it wasn't. Would a rod like this be good for dropshot? What would a moderate/fast rod be useful for? I can't find much help without it confusing the crap out of me. Any help would be appreciated. I am new to all this and up until this point have only ever used med/fast rods.

As @Glaucussaid, a bit long - but workable for Ned Rigs and Drop-Shots.

When I started fishing, I used a fiberglass casting rod. I used it for everything. And I mean EVERYTHING. You have a rod that is lighter, more responsive, more sensitive and probably better all-around than that fiberglass rod was, even though it might not be as ultimately strong. You'll have to stay away from the slop. Otherwise, look at the recommended lure and line weights on it, and then you go ahead and use it for anything that your little ol' heart desires, and be happy. It'll catch fish just fine. jj

Good for a ned rig. The ned rig is awesome; make sure you get the real Z-man brand ones though.

It's not that I can't return it, it's just she was so proud of herself that she picked out a rod that I didn't have. Just trying to think of a way to use this, but I could return it if I wanted to.

I'm not recommending a return, just an exchange. Same line of rod, just 6 inches shorter and a power rating heavier. The 7' ML Fenwick HMG would be great for Ned Rig, grubs, drop shot, wacky rig, etc. The reason I asked if she would notice is because with it being the same line she would still think it was the rod she got you. Win win.

Great! I would actually recommend the 1/15th ounce heads. They sound light but heavier isn't better for the ned. Make sure you use the swim-shake-glide retrieve too. It's the best in most situations imo. Good luck!

Keep the rod. Don't take a chance with the relationship. Not worth it. Use it for neds and for light square lips cranks. Not too long for neds imho, and perfect for small cranks that are too light for BC.
One cannot have too many rods.

Thanks, I was basically just asking what this type of rod was used for, since I couldn't find a straight answer by searching online. My wife wouldn't be upset or mad if I did exchange it, she isn't that kind of person, I just liked how proud she was when she gave it to me that I wanted to keep it. I do have other rods but they are all med/fast or med/heavy/fast so this was the odd one out. I do like the feel of it, so I'm going to try it out with neds, this is the first time I have heard of this.

I think you may learn to like it. 2 of my Ned rods are HMGs only shorter than that because I am shorter and really old so I need shorter and lighter stuff.

I disagree. His rod will work for a Ned Rig, but technically and traditionally speaking a Ned Rig is fished utilizing short, accurate casts.

Hi!
My personnal drop shot rod is. 7'6" ML (tho extra fast) and absolutly LOVE the extra lentgh, DONT TRADE IT. As a finesse rod, casting out tiny hairjigs, drop shots or ned rigs, you will have a ton of fun. Its a rod that forces you to learn new techniques. Catch your next PB on it and then she will feel even happier

Keep the rod. I’d drop shot with it for sure. I’ve used the bed rig with my 7’ light rod (essentially it’s a UL) and I caught a bass on my first cast as soon as the jig hit the bottom. It was awesome.
I did did realize that the 7’ length moved the jig a heck of a lot more than I anticipated which I found surprising that I was able to realize first hand why a shorter rod might be preferred.
No worries, however. Just a slight and conscious adjustment on my part and all is well and workable.
It could also be your trout/pan fish rod and the rod for small treble lures like the smaller jerk and crank baits, in-line spinners and the like.
Personally, I love rods in this class, but I’m not prejudice... I love all types of rods, lol.
Btw, this rod is responsible for catching the most fish in my arsenal of rods.

Ned, neko, drop shot, in line spinners, light crankbaits, etc.
Use braid and it will make the rod a bit more useful. No stretch line and a leader with a moderate fast rod should work for all of the above techniques.
The fenwick hmg fishes about a power heavier than listed. So in reality you have a medium light in some other manufacturers lines.
Depends where you are too, are you pulling 10lb bass out of the moderate cover or more 1-4lb bass out of light cover.
Would also work well for trout, bluegill, sunfish, etc.
I think it was very nice of your wife to do that for you. It's tricky for a spouse to buy fishing stuff unless you give a specific list. My wife buys me lures because she likes the names of them

That rod sounds like it would be a blast to catch smaller fish on. Try small/light squarebills with it. I have a ml mf aetos casting rod and it might be my most fun rod.

Also wouldn't be too bad for throwing a shad rap, its a bit long but that extra length means you could really rip one of those out there, but yea a Ned rig and wacky rig would be good, as well as grubs and such, Might make even make a good crappie rod if you're gonna do some multi-species stuff.

Along with using it for ned rigs you might enjoy using it for jerkbaits, cranks & topwater. Try it with light braid with a mono or flouro leader for finesse style fishing. it would also work with live bait presentations.

Top water and light to medium weight crankbaits. Specifically, great rod for square bills, Bandit 200 and the original Rapala.
