The Favorite 2025

fishing user avatarMobasser reply :

I've heard this from several fisherman over the years. " Man I wish I still had that rod". Or, " I should have never sold that one". Sometimes we develop a favorite. One rod that you always have on your fishing trips, that feels right, and seems perfect for your style of fishing. Mine is a 6ft spinning rod made by Lews. It's a simple, graphite spinning rod I bought probably 25yrs ago. It features a Tennessee handle, a solid tube of graphite, and you attatch your reel with electrical tape. At one point about 1" inch of the tip broke off, and I glued on a replacement tip. This one is perfect for a 1/8 oz Texas rig, and a Zoom finesse worm, which has caught a lot of bass for me over the years. It has a very fast action, and a good amount of power in the butt section. It probably would be hard to find a replacement for this one, especially with this handle style. Do you have an older rod that's a favorite? Any style, cast , spin, flip, etc. Over a lifetime of fishing, these are the ones that you remember. Do you have an old favorite?

fishing user avatarPourMyOwn reply :

I lost a 6' Fenwick in a fire two years ago, I hunt Ebay for that rod every week.

I did just find a 5'6" Lew's Speed stick from the early 80s that I also lost-it will be my Torpedo rod. I just really like the old pistol grip fiberglass feel.

fishing user avatarRB 77 reply :

Mine is pretty simple, its 7' MH/ F Shimano Crucial Worm Rod, full cork. Not the fanciest rod by any means, but it just fits my style of worm fishing so perfect. It just has that "mojo" for me. I would probably have to take a knee for a moment if I ever broke that thing.

All of my rods and reels are pretty much old favorites. I don't have anything that is not at least 40 years old. Most all the fishing I do these days is with ultra lite stuff.

So I usually have my trusty old Garcia Conolon 4 star 5 1/2' #B501-A rod with me and one of my Mitchell 408 or 308 reels.

I still have it. It's a unique rod. G Loomis SJR Mag Light action with an extra fast tip.

It's an amazing light action rod with a little extra beef, but it will still bend to protect 4-6lb line.

It's like 20 years old now. Loomis was ahead of the game with making extra fast action action rods.

It's still in beautiful condition for the thousands of fish it has caught. It's been on countless streams, rivers and lakes.

It's a beautiful smallie stream rod. Also my old G Loomis MBR rods. 6 1/2' and 7' rod that can do almost all of what I need to do.

These are definitely my favorite rods.

fishing user avatarJ._Bricker reply :

I guess my favorite is my Loomis GLX 743 which an 8.75lber in a tournament. I still have the first rod I ever bought, with paper route money, a Fenwick PLS65 spinning rod...

fishing user avatarWRB reply :

The only 90's vintage rods I use are a hold over 705 Lamiglas crankbait and Loomis 8'swimbait rods. My son still uses his Tennessee handle 6' 6" Phenix split shot rod.

I prefer using today's lighter weight rods over yesterday's heavier rods.

fishing user avatarRaul reply :

Berkley Lightning Rod LR15 and 16, MH, 5'6" casting, I still have them after more than 2 decades, have been "relegated" by other rods, in theory better, however, when it comes to drop a bait in an impossible place they do the trick so I always carry at least one with me.

fishing user avatarGReb reply :

Mine is a 6’6” MH BPS Extreme. Had it since about 2002 and have caught probably a thousand fish on it. I own newer rods that cost 3x the price but this one is still my favorite

Shimano Crucial gen2  6’11 casting M/F drop shot specific. Lost it last year and never been able to replace it. I use it for everything from weightless worm, dropshot to super Fluke. I’ve never been the same since ????????????????q

It's your lucky day. Just need to convince the seller to ship to you. He's been trying to sell this rod for quite some time so it might be worth a shot.

I broke my 6 '10 Mh Crucial worm rod 4 years ago and I'm still kicking myself for hauling it on the back of my truck. That was a nice rod.

Got that rod in a 6' or 6'6"(can't remember) for Christmas with a 300 when I was 16. Great memories. Tip guide would groove after a while. My dad taught me to smooth it out with some fine wet sandpaper.

fishing user avatarFishTank reply :

I had a Shimano Calais 201A.  It was the smoothest reel I have ever fished.  I bought it clearance out at a local tackle shop.  I fished it for about 2 years and a guy offered me a bit more than I paid for it.  I couldn't refuse and I needed the cash but I sure do miss it.  There was just something special about that reel.

I have a pair of loomis MagL/XFast rods and love them.  One I use all the time and the other I am hanging onto as a spare.

fishing user avatarNathanDLTH reply :

I don’t have a favorite rod, but I’ll tell you my favorite story of fishing of though. It involves a paddleboat, my dad, oldest brother, me in the middle of the lake. We were sitting low in the water and my oldest brother had a brand new Johnson n Johnson rod/reel combo. Red. He loved red. So we made our way in deepish water, my brother hands me the combo and says here you go Nate. In 30 minutes I had caught three big pike. Somewhere between 28-32inches, I was maybe 10 or 11 and we had been to the Cabela’s in Nebraska. So he got a new rod n reel and I was the first person to fish with it.

Now my favorite rod is either my Megabass Tour Versatile or Dobyns 755 Xtasy.

My least expensive rod I own is ironically my favorite rod. My Falcon Jason Christie squarebill/spinnerbait rod. 6’8 MH. Picked it up on sale for like $50.

Its just one of those rods that works great for everything, feels great in your hand and is shockingly well balanced for the price. It’s parabolic enough to keep topwater fish pinned, yet still drives small jig hooks home.

Yeah, I listed two of them earlier this year as a package deal on a local site, as I use my Calcutta's primarily for bigger reel needs and cherish all my 200 and 50 size E's. Everyone wanted me to split them and then when I was just about to, I thought better of it and decided to keep them both. I'm so glad I did! The E series just have that mojo.

I’ve recommended this rod several times in these forums.

It’s a fantastic jerk bait stick and it handles many other techniques equally as well.

I have two of them and paid 25 dollars each.

Have you by chance fished any other rods from the series? It’s crossed my mind a few times to try the 6’11 heavy.

I have one of those I got at BPS on a combo sale with another old favorite, a Bantam Curado 200. If I recall right you got both for 159.00, the rod alone was 100.00 and the reel was 120.00.

The rod is a spare now, but would like to unretire as a spinnerbait/underspin rod.

I love mine, a 5’4” Loomis SJR Mag light with the simple two sliding rings reel seat. I’ve got it paired with a Shimano Sahara 500. I’ve taken plenty of bass on that rod, including several 4+ pound LMBs. I love it for throwing small, weightless soft plastics.

I remember fishing quarries when I was 14/15. The fun I had then I will never forget. The gear I don’t remember at all. I only remember a Kmart ugly stick combo that I saved up for myself. And I didn’t have it then.
