Whether To Go Cheap Or Expensive 2025

fishing user avatarSlipknot_Fan666 reply :

Hoping to buy a new reel in the next few weeks, just have a few more important things to worry about first. Trying to decide to go with a Black Max, just so I can have the rest of my paycheck to buy some baits and line, amongst other things, or to buy something more expensive, like a Tatula, and have less of my paycheck for the other things. Anyone was to persuade me to one choice or the other? I wouldn't mind either decision, just not sure which would be the smarter decision.

fishing user avatarABW reply :

Get the more expensive reel, but make sure you don't pay retail for it. There's no need to.

fishing user avatarjbsoonerfan reply :

I would rather have a reel that was higher quality. You can always buy a few baits here and there. Not saying the black max is a bad reel, just saying I would opt for the higher quality one.

fishing user avatarJrob78 reply :

Get the better reel.  You can buy your misc. stuff next paycheck.

fishing user avatarMaxximus Redneckus reply :

buy a abu round reel c3c4c5 in the 4600 size lifetime reel and you can find them new all day for 80$

I've owned a Black Max. I know it isn't much, but I don't know if my boss will keep me around so I'm trying to manage money as if it'll be my last paycheck for a while. That's the only reason I'm considering a cheap reel.

Hate to sound rude, but if you don't even know if you will have a job, a reel would probably be the last thing on my mind.

If the "few more important things" are food, car payment and rent, you don't need any reels. Brian.

The few more important things are seeing my girlfriend and getting a new phone before mine goes completely out.

Yea get a reel that will last ya a while. When you get a reel that will last a good 5-10years. It will pay for itself. Ask for gift cards for cabelas bps gander mountain for bdays holidays for terminal tackle and baits

What's your budget?  I'd buy the best I could afford within reason.

Negative. I live with my parents and they take care of me. They used to hint pretty hard at me to get a job and get out, but since they found out about my anxiety and depression they backed off. I don't want to freeload off of them, just need help until I get a steady job and get everything sorted out.

I'm making $300+ a week. Not all too sure how much yet because I haven't done a full week of work. I'd like to keep it sub $200 range.

Not gonna get that much worth of tackle. Lol just thinking a decent amount worth and then putting some back since I plan to move to GA soon.

fishing user avatartnt2671 reply :

if i was in your budget area my choice would be a  new gen diawa exceler on a kistler carbon steel/ pro series you would be well under $200.00 and have a great setup that wouldn't break the bank

fishing user avatarjbsoonerfan reply :

Okay, not to get to far off topic here. But....at 20 I bought my first house and just fished with what I had. I would worry more about saving some money and getting out on your own.

My favorite reels all time! Have a couple 25yr old abu rounds that still work like they did when i bought them, as solid as they come and most of them can be upgraded with extra bearings for cheap if you go abec5 wich is all the bearing youll ever need in any reel...

fishing user avatarMontanaro reply :

Lews makes a good starter reel.

fishing user avatarChoporoz reply :

You've owned a Black Max?  In the past?  Did it fail you?  Or did you get rid of it?  Either way....if it didn't do the trick for you, then considering something of more lasting quality might be a good idea.

fishing user avatarCgrinder reply :

It's hard to argue with a $90 Tatula from Amazon. I think waiting for a second paycheck or a steadier job is sound advice though.
